EP 2 (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: GOSU 007. Rel: 03 Apr 18
  1. Shret (6:36)
  2. RJam (6:48)
Review: While there's some debate about the "Michigan-based" status of "long time producer" Thomas Rooge - it's almost certainly an alias of Frankfurt-based Gosu co-owner Phil Evans - you'll find plenty of audible references to the music of Detroit in his productions. Check, for example, "Shret", the opening track from this fourth Rooge EP on Gosu. While the bold analogue bassline and sparse, clanging analogue bassline sound more British in origin, the beats, chords and sonic textures come straight from the Motor City playbook. You'll find more deep space chords, sci-fi electronics and snappy machine drums inside the snappy tech-house roll of excellent flipside "RJam".

  1. FTR (6:34)
  2. PHouz (5:26)
  3. I Ce (7:10)
  4. Lucyd (5:17)
Review: Frankfurt-based Phil Evans first appeared on our radar back in 2015 via a series of collaborations and solo EPs on the Pager Records label he co-founded. Last year he donned a new alias, Thomas Rooge, delivering a fine pair of EPs on GOSU. Here his rise through the ranks continues via another rock-solid four-tracker that tiptoes the fine line between house and techno. We're particularly enjoying opener "FTR", bouncy affair full of Terrence Parker style stretched-out organ chords, crispy percussion and a repeated vocal refrain ("I'm from the future!"), though there's plenty more to enjoy elsewhere. Check, for example, the thrusting, bass-heavy late night pump of "PHouz" and the deliciously dreamy, intergalactic brilliance of Motor City techno-influenced deep house numbers "I Ce" and "Lucyd".

  5. Prey (5:37)
  6. Ink (feat Ouri) (3:29)
Review: Rosewater CTZ finaly comes through with his own 12" single, after a triumphant first appearance as a remixer for CRi's "Why I Love You", back in 2016. Dropping on the young Aarkern, this iconic EP opens with the docile waves of "Elys", a new age stunner with a post-modern feel, which paves the way for the 90s-leaning broken beat stomper "Dead 2 Me", and flows beautifully into the title track "Crushed", another magnificent slice of pulsating euphoria. On the B-side, "Cleanse" heads back to the sea, calming the air with placid swarms od subtle distortion, while "Prey" staggers beats and vocal chops like nothing else we've heard, and "Ink" leaves us with a blurry, almost out of focus twang. Powerful material.

  1. Will I Make The Turn? (7:21)
  2. Sorry...I Can't (6:35)
Review: Roshan Chauhan aka R.O.S.H. is a British producer and studio engineer that has released previously on his eponymous and Drumz For Eternity imprints, but now inaugurates the Negative Spaces label. The team behind the label held their first event in the intimate confines of London's Waiting Room back in March with Tasha, Object Blue and here is the first release. The A side features the rather hypnotic "Will I Make The Turn?" awash in spectacular layers of melody and all round futurist aesthetic. On the flip, it's a more straight-ahead affair with the bass driven "Sorry...I Can't" aimed squarely at A.M. dance floors with its strobe-lit/heads down aesthetic.

Omnitronic (12")
Cat: OMD 014. Rel: 15 Dec 17
  1. Omnitronic (6:52)
  2. GE (Miami edit) (8:32)
Review: When we first dropped the needle on this latest EP from long-serving German producer Anthony Rother - someone with an impressive track record of producing both high quality electro and throbbing club techno - we couldn't help but fall in love with what we heard. "Omnitronic" is little less than a blissful, glassy-eyed romp through hybrid electro/techno pastures, with Rother cleverly contrasting the shimmering beauty of his cyclical, life-enhancing melody lines with notably crusty, hiss-laden drum machine hits. Flip to the B-side and he opts for an altogether more robust and mind-altering concoction: the redlined, bass-heavy electro beats, minimal wave attitude and industrial grit of "GE (Miami Edit)". It's almost the perfect foil for the breezy and positive A-side.

Review: At the third release on their deep house division Basic Channel keeps introducing new singers. Paul St Hilaire brings in a refreshing reggae flavour to the rather classic deep house set-up. The main vocal mix one A-side is allied with an instrumental on the B-side that reminiscent of Maurizio or Basic Channel releases.

Cat: ISEE 003. Rel: 17 Jun 16
  1. God Dreng (9:12)
  2. Ofos (5:22)
  3. 0908 (8:59)
  4. Canis (5:39)
Review: International Sun-Earth Explorer have been in a category of their own throughout 2016, coming through four smoking techno joints including this latest 12" by debutant Route. Very much in the spirit of the legendary Basic Channel duo, "God Dreng" takes a beatless sway of dub infusions and creates a solid movement out of thin air, a hollow drone of sonic that develops further on "Ofos". "0908" on the flip is less moody and the synths pick up more freedom and momentum, while "Canis" glazes the sounds over with a chilly layer of FX. Quality.

  4. King County Metro Transit (S Olbricht remix)
Review: Madrid's Go! Finger takes the vinyl path again launching some selected tracks from one of their most notable cassette releases to date: Route 8 and S. Olbricht's "Ste Pwri Tmod - Selected Works", Budapest's Farbwechsel duo's early efforts together on Go! Finger. Well known by their most recent releases on Lobster Theremin, Nous, Opal Tapes, Delsin, Gang of Ducks and This Is Our Time, "Selected Works" is finally pressed to please all the hard sick heads eager to play and mix a copy on wax loud! Enjoy this preview of a piece that includes S.P.T. Ballacid's original live recorded tracks "Don't Miss Us Florida" & "King County Metro Transit" plus their respective Route 8 & S. Olbricht remixes. Amazing raw analog deep jam cuts. Stunningly strong stuff. Floorkiller!

  1. 9_27 (edit 1)
  2. 8_27 (edit 1)
  3. Nite Houss (Second Try)
  4. Hanging Lake
  5. Rain Sketch
Review: There's only been one other release to date on the aptly titled Night Sea Journey, whose M.O. is, "focused on simplicity." The Chicago label started life with label heads Garrett David and Colin Johnson, and now Adam Rowe has come to join in with his own take on simple approaches in ambient and deep house. "9_27 (edit 1)" may have a lovely sub bass propelling it, but the languorous quality of the keys makes it feel almost static in the best possible way. "8_27 (edit 1)" welcomes some needlepoint drum machine rhythms into the mix, preferring a broken beat over anything too straight. "Nite Houss" has a similar mysterious charm you might hear on a Real Soon record, while "Hanging Lake" swerve into more ambient territory again, with spectacular results.

  3. Time 2 Jack (3:18)
  4. En Trance 10 (15:46)
Review: Take care out there, Roy Of The Ravers is back with another round of boisterous hardware hack-outs on Acid Waxa. You can tell he means business on opening track "Supremacy Royale", a fast and mean-tempered slice of bleepy techno with brains to match its brawn. "Ambergris 9" is a more playful jam with wonderfully dated melodic lines lifted from the pantheon of BBC library music, and then "Time 2 Jack" spins off into strange, abrasive realms of experimental acid. The epic "En Trance 10" wheels its way through more than 15 minutes on the B-side, employing trancey bassline strategies to keep your brain locked on course for the full trip.

  4. Lilli's Dream (5:43)
Review: Melbournian producer Katie Campbell has turned a few heads since donning the Roza Terenzi alias last year. She's yet to put out a duff release and this latest excursion - her first for Aussie label Voyage - is every bit as alluring as its predecessors. Check, for example, the rubbery deep house funk of opener "Weakest Link", where far-sighted bleep melodies and alien synths dance gently above an elastic groove, or the far-out late night hustle of analogue-rich workout "Seminyak Dream", which sounds like the Mood Hut crew making 1990 bleep techno. The EP also boasts a luscious slab of dusty deepness (the wonderfully spacey "Lill's Dream") and a bustling, sub-bass heavy tweak of "Weakest Link" by regular Campbell collaborator D. Tiffany.

  1. The Smallest Footprints (7:40)
  2. The Ends Of Weather (6:42)
  3. Nest Of Queens (7:08)
Review: Probably for good reason, techno deviant Rrose isn't as active as he was a few years back. However, we see this as a winning strategy - building and maintain momentum up until the very moment the bombs drop. Back on his own EAUX label, we have three new, blurry technoid structures made for the more finessed ears. "The Smallest Footprints" dazzles and confuses with its constantly shape-shifting groove, guided and supported by an ocean of deep-water sonics and atmospheric harmonies, whereas "The Ends Of Weather" itself sounds like the beginning of the perfect storm, gliding with tenebrous might across its six minutes and 42 seconds of instability and beatless sway. On the B-side, "Nest Of Queens" manages to do very much with very little, launching a minimalistic percussion flex that evolves at its own pace, twisting and convulsing more and more with each new bang of the beat. What a stunner. Be quick, these will go!

  3. Switching Rails (6:52)
  4. One More Sometime (3:57)
Review: For their latest release, Pittsburgh Tracks has turned to Shawn Rudiman, an experienced producer arguably best known for previous releases on Applied Rhythmic Technology, Matrix and Detroit Techno Militia. There are four quality cuts to choose from, of which the muted Detroit futurism of "Works On Paper" - classic sounding riffs and spacey electronics over a rolling techno groove - and the acid-fired deep space thrust of "Switching Rails" are our picks for peak-time plays. That said, ultra-deep, daydreaming IDM closer "One More Sometime" is also superb, while "Last Light On" is a deep and driving techno box jam. In other words, it's an excellent EP.

  2. Rudolf C - "Granite State" (6:17)
  3. Shedbug - "Unwavering" (4:45)
  4. Shedbug - "Dust Off" (6:14)
Review: Following up DJ Barbo$$a's absolutely awesome Mystical Teachings EP, Melbourne's Salt Mines are back with yet more lo-fi house shenanigans courtesy of the label bosses: Shedbug and Rudolph C (Neo Violence/X-Kalay/Lost Palms). The latter serves up the tribal raindance of "Indian Rope"and the saturated acid house of "Granite State". On the flip, Shedbug (who had a great track on Polish imprint PLAY !T LOUD earlier this year) serves up some dirty rave breaks on "Unwavering" featuring a massive Reese bassline and... panpipes! It's not altogether unpleasant though, believe us. Less introspective and more dancefloor oriented on the hi-NRG antics of "Dust Off" though - a right epic and featuring some euphoric arpeggios, cosmic synth leads plus the best of vintage drum machines. This will truly elevate the crowd and just begs to be played somewhere like their local festival Rainbow Serpent this year!

Review: Rumah has made steady progress since debuting in 2012, releasing a succession of solid releases via such labels as CHURCH, Nineteen89 and Blueprint. Here he makes his full debut for Dutch outfit Wolfskuil Music, serving up a quartet of club tracks. With its drifting, dubbed-out melody motifs, foreboding air and rock-solid kick-drums, title track "A View To The Sea" sounds like a tooled-up take on Orbital classic "Semi-Detached". "Tobsha" is a darker and more atmospheric techno box-jam, while "Dor" impresses by layering undulating, acid-fired motifs on top of a no-nonsense rhythm track. Finally, closer "Brief Reel" heads into deep space via alien electronics and the kind of trippy motifs that reminded us of Paul Woolford classic "Erotic Discourse".
