Review: Swiss duo Savage Grounds released their first three records on Lux Rec: of which one of the members (Daniele Cosmo) is the label boss. Their new EP is the first release to come out externally - in this instance it's for Dutch retroverts Enfant Terrible who have unleashed works by Stattseinde, Europ Europ and LCN of late. Cosmo and partner in crime CCO have created a sound of their own: a style which combines elements of techno, electro, EBM, acid and industrial. The duo have been known to record their jams in one take using only the bare essentials of quality analogue gear, mainly by Roland. It starts off on the A side with the slow burning and guttural analogue punk of "Concrete Tunnels" which you could imagine Helena Hauff playing. Speaking of which, the B side cut "Wall Of Rubber" is is a gritty acid epic which wouldn't sound out of place on her Return To Disorder imprint. Finally, the haunting electro goth of "Negative Spaces" will appeal to fans of legendary labels like Viewlexx or Kommando 6.

Review: Katsunori Sawa is no stranger to the Weevil Neighbourhood, first appearing on the experimental Berlin outpost as Steven Porter with confidant Yuji Kondo. Having subsequently walked on the Weevil side sans his Steven Porter compadre for The Two Legs 12" late last year, Sawa's relationship with the Neighbourhood is emboldened further with a new 12" entitled The Holy Ground. If you have a rudimentary grasp of the avant garde drum and bass and musique concrete that Weevil Neighbourhood specialise in, you'll love what Sawa gets up to on these four tracks as walls of rhythmic noise, undulating bottom end rave and terrifying soundscapes are explored with thrilling results.

  4. NGM
Review: One half of the Steven Porter duo, Katsunori Sawa, debuts solo on the Weevil Neighbourhood, a mysterious Berlin label borne out of the equally enigmatic, and now defunct, Weevil Series. Here Sawa delivers four tracks of industrial and experimental sound design, minus the ear shattering sonics and overbearing drone that other producers of a similar creed may employ. Windswept waves of white noise blow across "Augur" while its drums create a syncopated groove like that of injured beetle limping to safety. Piston pumping sound effects and factory ambience soundtrack "Black Sugar", while "Phenomenon" is the EP's most rhythmically coherent production. Sawa then ends on "NGM" which sounds like the night time hustle of New York city night heard from the empty viewing deck of the Empire State Building.

Hofta EP (12")
Cat: KAFTA 004. Rel: 26 Jun 18
  1. Horres (3:14)
  2. Tsalimia (8:41)
  3. Lefkes (6:14)
  4. Hofta (5:30)
Review: After a lengthy stint, and what resulted in a healthy working relationship for several years, Athens-based SAWF has decided to stick close to home as of late. He returns to the Kafta imprint with a fiery disposition in his sight, engulfing the airwaves with his signature swarm of sci-fi atmospherics. We're down with that. "Horres" is a swarm of noxious bass, lethal if heard at a high volume, whereas "Tsalimia" trods along at a mid tempo lull, driven forwards by a gritty, grime-centric whirlpool of hazy electronics. The B-side kicks off with the dubby minimalism of "Lefkes", a tribal abstraction that swirls effortlessly into the ether, and ends on the pouncing stomp-techno of "Hofta" - surely a big room techno tool - TIP!

  1. Test Tubes (Hammer remix V8) (6:55)
  2. Fishbowl (Mor Elian remix) (5:59)
Review: Some six months after Paul "Scuba" Rose delivered a fine first album from his vowel-free SCB project, Hammer and Mor Elian step up to remix two of that set's most celebrated tracks. Bicep associate Hammer handles "Test Tubes", rolling out a mix bristling with crispy percussion, mind-mangling electronic riffs, foreboding electronic bass and chiming melodies. In contrast, LA producer and Hypercolour regular Mor Elian opts for a more loose-limbed and broken rhythmic approach, cannily showcasing her love of alien electronics and fuzzy ambient textures over stabbing analogue bass and sweaty, jazz-wise machine drums.

  2. Freedom For The Fifty (6:05)
  3. Oration (7:26)
  4. Laboratory Conditions (3:16)
Review: Hotflush head honcho Scuba returns to his esteemed imprint, following up hot releases by Liverpudlian newcomer Or:la, scene stalwart/acid freak LA-4A and the experimental electronics of Munich's Pyur. Under his SCB alias, he is probably best known for 'heads-down' style grooves and definitely more on the aggressive side. The dusty and dank "Test Tubes" is warm-up music for clandestine warehouse raves, while "Freedom For The Fifty" sees him offer up an impressive perspective of old school, Detroit style electro. From here, you start to see that it's a really diverse yet cohesive offering: with the hypnotic dancefloor drama of "Oration" showing something more consistent with his label's overall sound, while the evocative and life affirming retro electronica of "Laboratory Conditions" closes out the EP in style - something you would have heard at one of those legendary raves under the M25 back in the early '90s.

Review: Guy Tavares makes a rare appearance on his own Bunker outlet under the Schmerzlabor alias. We're pretty excited to say the least given the fact that Tavares releases music once in a blue moon, and instead prefers to use the label as a platform for other sewer dwellers to excel. Four tracks of bitterly uncompromising steel funk, noise-fuelled techno driller-thrillers. Sounding like the inside of one of Tavares' famous bunker raves, the air is humid and drenched with fuzzy distortion, where beats collide and contort into sweltering bundles of dancefloor noise. A bloody bunch of chest-bursters, hawk-nosed and machine-licked. Viciously recommended and ludicrously unmissable. Bunker wins again.

Review: Oh yes, calling all freaks and warehouse dwellers! Another Bunker 12" is here and it's by none other than Guy Tavares, the imprint's eccentric boss and The Hague's most enigmatic party figure. Running his label out of his bunker, literally and physically, Tavares returns for the second edition of his Juggernaut series under the Schmerzlabor moniker. Untitled track names as per usual and a whole load of fury, so no surprises there. However, if you're haven't heard his stuff or the output on Bunker as a whole, and you're into distorted basslines, gnarly beats and general apocalyptic sounds then look no further. This is the real s*** and you're not going to get anything else as pure and direct from the source. Another massive and utterly essential techno monster from one of Europe's elite labels. Solid.

Cat: VIVOD 017. Rel: 03 Jul 17
  1. Higher
  2. Glass Walls
  3. Pink Milk
  4. Play People
Review: Ali Renault's ever on-point Vivod label welcomes UK techno stalwart Tobias Schmidt to the table for a return to a time when techno could be slamming, witty and downright fun at the same time. "Higher" is loaded with funk, riding some kind of bassy lick with tightly wound drums and off-kilter synth warbles, but then "Glass Walls" ramps up the madness with a lead line that will stop people in their tracks before making them freak out with gusto. "Pink Milk" shows no let up in the energy, although the parping trumpet lines that lead the track give everything a jaunty, upbeat feel compared to the darkness of the A side. "Play People" is a true tribute to the wonky techno scene Schmidt came up with, all skronky swing and lopsided synths for all the true techno freaks out there.

  1. Invitation To Love
  2. Remember When
  3. Into The Night
Review: Dub techno doesn't come deeper than DeepChord, and Mike Schommer is one of those responsible for launching the legendary project. Making his return after 15 long years, Steve O'Sullivan's re-energised Mosaic Records is the perfect place to get reacquainted with the chap. "Invitation To Love" is as romantic as the title would suggest, letting gorgeous chords and pad washes ooze out over a steady ticking beat. The rhythm gets chopped up a little on "Remember When", while "Into The Night" heads into head-nodding dubstep territory with mammoth bass replaced by elegant Motor City synth shimmers.

Review: Berlin's Aufnahme + Wiedergabe return with more modern industrial perspectives, courtesy of local duo Schwefelgelb on the Aus Den Falten EP. Forget the 'Deutscheschule', you'll get a good enough German lesson after listening to this EP - not to mention a full body music workout from by the German outfit. From the frantic aggrotech of "Obwohl Es So Aussieht" calling to mind classic Leather Strip, the slow-burning sleaze of "Der Pool Schweigt" that will appeal to fans of Skinny Puppy or Front Line Assembly and "In Dem Laken" which crosses over into techno in impressive fashion - much like label mates Phase Fatale and Blush Response have been known to do in recent times.

  1. Schwefelgelb - "Fokus" (Sarin remix) (5:45)
  2. Blind Delon - "Fuzz" (HIV + vocal mix) (5:07)
Review: This typically forthright and mind-mangling release marks the fourth and final instalment in Khemia's Magnum Opus series. It delivers two unheard versions of tracks from aufnahme + wiedergarbe and Maniaque's growing back catalogue. First up on side A is SARIN's pulsating revision of Schwelfelgelb's "Fokus", which combines the throbbing drums and mind-altering bass of Front 242 or Nitzer Ebb style EBM with the kind of sharp, restless stabs more often found on basement or warehouse-friendly old house anthems. Meanwhile on the flip, vocalist HIV+ adds his drowsy, stylish voice to Blind Delon's dirt-encrusted, eyeliner-clad gothic synth-pop number "Fuzz". It's something of a chugger, all told, powered by an undulating, arpeggio style bassline and clandestine, foreboding synthesizer lines.

  4. Emblema
Review: Ilian Tape continues to be code for "absolutely killing it mate" with the Zenker brothers introducing us and you to the production talents of Sciahri with the Mysterious Love 12". Spend some time with the sound clips here and you'll be hard pushed to believe this is Sciahriar Tavakoli's debut 12" as Sciahri, such is the standard of productions. Tavakoli's stated interest in the loop techno pioneered in 90s era Birmingham is very much evident on a cut like "The Dream Is True" but there's some nice little touches slipped in that give it some true personality such as the spin back in the breakdown. The title cut is a stern faced dubby number that just tunnels and tunnels away, whilst there's a cheeky strut to the way Tavakoli implements the filters on "Mind". The final track "Emblema" is the kind of techno number you want to drop right when everyone has forgotten their names.

Review: Illian Tape was responsible for releasing Sciahri's debut EP a couple of years back, so it's fitting that he's returned following a brief flirtation with Black Opal. The Florence-based producer is in a feisty mood, too, as can be heard on sparkling opener "Atonement", which sounds like the mutant offspring of West London broken beat, Detroit futurism and abstract techno. Its' pleasing positivity is removed on the accompanying Pessimist Remix, which brilliantly turns it into a grouchy, moody, bass-heavy shuffler. Flip for the tantalizing creepiness of clandestine ambient shuffler "Enemy Sound", and the deeper, heads-down broken techno grooves of "Departure".

Review: Kenneth Scott has been a frequent guest DJ at Vakant parties over the years, so it's hardly a surprise to find him finally releasing a record on the storied German label. It's also not a surprise that the title track, "Let's Go Program Thomas", is something of a throbbing electro floor-filler. With its ragged analogue bass, punchy rhythm track and intergalactic electronics, it not only ticks all the boxes but signs and sends back the form. The Exaltics brilliantly flip the script on their remix, which re-casts the track as a surging but spacey, Rotterdam style modern Italo-disco throb-job. Turn to the flipside for the fizzing, broken beat influenced futurism of "Pranic Lift 777", not to mention a blissfully intergalactic revision of the same cut from Evigt Morker.

Review: Georgia-born, Brooklyn-based Sophia Saze set up Dusk & Haze to release 'genre-free' experimental music, exhibited in the label's debut release entitled 'Solace' EP featuring four versatile cuts from Sophia herself and twisted electro and techno remixes from Umwelt and Benjamin Damage. The second release comes from the enigmatic SDX, a masked artist who's fiercely championed left-of-centre dance music for decades. Crunchy drums and a thumping bassline kick things off in 'MS 04' before Los Angeles duo 138 provide an outstanding remix incorporating a cacophony of raw breaks. Modulated flutters, warped blips and white noise create 'MS 08', leading into the organic drums and off-kilter arpeggios of '007' until New York's SC- 164 reworks '007' delivering a pulsating sub and distorted vocal chops.
