Notes: This basic building block of a modular system is indispensable. The Hungry Robot VCA provides 2 independent, high quality VCAs. These VCAs are DC coupled which means you can patch in audio sources as well as CV sources (though its primary function is for audio). As with all Hungry Robot "Modular Boxes" the VCA can be powered with a simple 9V DC, Negative Center power supply.

Notes: The ADE-50 provides 3 all-analogue voltage controlled amplifiers based on a modern operational transconductance amplifier design.

The VCA's are designed to provide a good balance between the performance and specification of modern 'on-chip' VCA's and the character and musicality of classic analogue designs.

The OTA core of each VCA is fully discrete - it is built from only resistors, capacitors and transistors - however, the CV conditioning, audio input and output stages are built using high-quality op-amps giving the best balance between musicality, character and performance.

Following the ADDAC103 T-Networks, this new module is inspired by it's simplicity. This is a 4 voice Square Oscillator with VCA, FM switch and a slew decay for the incoming Trigger IN. All voices are then sent through a Multimode Filter.

Each voice has it's own VCA input where any input is accepted (Trigger, Gate, CV) The [DECAY] controls the slew decay applied to the incoming signal, if [DECAY] is fully anti-clockwise then it works as a Mute. The [FM ON] switches activate/deactivate the FM input coming from the previous voice: Voice 1 FM comes from voice 4, voice 2 FM comes from voice 1, and so on, so you can FM all of them in a FM loop.

All 4 voices are summed and sent through a filter with controls over [CUTOFF] with an Attenuverter for the CV input and [RESO- NANCE]. Three filter outputs are provided [LOWPASS], [BANDPASS] and [HIGHPASS]

The [EXTERNAL IN] input can be routed through a jumper on the back of the module allowing the incoming signal to go to:
the filter input for processing an external audio source.
all of the 4 voices Frequency control allowing for some experi- mental CV control over pitch of all 4 voices at the same time (due to the specificities of the circuit and to keep the module at a low price these inputs are not callibrated to 1v/octave).

Mixer section

Each channel has the following:

Stereo or mono - Each channel can be treated as a stereo channel or a mono channel with two summed inputs.

CV inputs for both panning and level control

Two send buses - You can route each channel to one of two send buses. Each send bus is stereo. You can choose if you want the send to come before or after the level/panning controls.

Mute - The mute has both latching mute (up) and a momentary mute (down). The mute uses a capacitor to slow the turn off and on of the mute action. So it is mostly click-less, but you may find an occasional pop.

Cue bus - You can route each channel to the cue bus.

Expandable Mixer Series

Bartenders can be cascaded to create 8ch, 12ch, or 16ch mixer. The main level is what is sent the main level control can act as a group control.

Barbacks can be added to add 2ch to your mix. Barbacks can also be cascaded enabling up to a 16ch mixer configuration.

Send-VCA can be added for CV control of the level of the send.

DVCA, Cast Iron, Mingles, and USB-2CH can all be connected with Dupont cables (aka female to female breadboard cables) via pin headers on the back of the modules. Connecting the in and out pins will send/receive the audio into the next module.

The min and max sections do not attempt to be precision min/max measurements. They will be within two diode drops of the actual min or max voltage.

VCA Sections:

There are two VCA sections that are also have a mix output. The CV input for each VCA is normalled to the output of a CV section. The VCA circuits are LM13700 based so they will slightly color the sound. The response curve is nearly linear but offers a slight exponential curve.

Notes: DVCA is a dual VCA based on the Mutable Instruments Veils. It features two separate voltage controlled amplifiers, both with a gain and a response curve potentiometer, that is variable from linear to exponential. The outputs are normaled, so when no patch cable is present on output 1, output 2 will contain both signals, allowing the module to be used as a mixer.

The DVCA can be chained together with other DVCAs to make a multi-channel mixer. On the back there are 2 single pins (one on the left side and one on the right) that will say IN and OUT on the PCB. If the DVCAs are side by side you can use a jumper to connect them, or you can use a female-female dupont cable with 2 female ends to connect them if you'd like to spread them out throughout your case.

Comes with jack lights that can be disabled via a jumper on the back.

It features two separate voltage-controlled amplifiers, both with a gain and a response curve potentiometer, that is variable from linear to exponential. The outputs are normalized, so when no patch cable is present on output 1, output 2 will contain both signals, allowing the module to be used as a mixer. Several DVCAs can be daisy-chained for voltage-controlled mixer operation. It comes with jack lights that can be disabled via a jumper on the back.

These modules use tall bushing potentiometers to offer a more stable feel.

The module is fully assembled and tested. Eurorack power cable included.

Eurorack recreation of classic sampler filter with added resonance & voltage control
Notes: 'MUM M8' is an 8hp Eurorack low pass filter building on the filter design used in the classic Akai S950 12 bit sampler with the addition of resonance, voltage control, clipped saturation and a dedicated VCA.

The low pass filter gives the recognisable super smooth vacuum like tone sucking sound which works magic on complex sources. The addition of clipped overdrive and intentionally aggressive self-oscillating resonance compliment the smooth filter core by juxtaposing it into more wasp like territory with acidic squeals and a more gritty sound.
Mum M8 features dual voltage control with attenuation (and inversion) of filter cut off and voltage control of resonance together with dual audio inputs - one of which includes a VCA to with the capability to aid overdriving signals into the filter core.

The filter core is a 6th Order Butterworth switched capacitor type design featuring an analog core but controlled by a high speed digital clock. This produces the characteristic smooth sounding filter but, as with the original S950, has a relatively high minimum cut off as to avoid 'clock bleed' into the filter output from the digital control. This minimum cut of point (and introduction of bleed if required) can be controlled via trimmers on the rear of the module (see calibration chapter). It is not unusual for there still to be some low-level artefacts from the clock present, particularly during filter sweeps - these add to the filters character.

The motivation for the module came from discussing filters in classic samplers with the artist Jack Adams - aka Mumdance. Jack suggested investigating the S950's filter well known as for it use in classic use in early jungle and hardcore. From that point onward Jack provided inspiration, help and feedback in the development of the filter. Big up Mumdance.

Zzzorb's filter core comprises a cascade of four VCA-based integrators with a feedback path for resonance control. The integrators are mixed together in different combinations to provide five simultaneous filter outputs:

- Highpass
- Bandpass
- Notch
- Two-pole lowpass
- Four-pole lowpass

Zzzorb's built-in VCA is a handy way to apply a volume envelope or tremolo to your filtered signal. You can even use it as a feedback or self-modulation control by passing one of the filter outputs through it!

Zzzorb provides CV inputs and attenuverters for controlling the VCA level, filter resonance, and filter frequency. Additionally, it has a filter pitch CV input with a unipolar attenuator. When the attenuator is turned fully clockwise, the filter frequency tracks the pitch CV input at one volt per octave.

The output of Zzzorb's VCA is normally added to its filter input, providing a quick way to manually or electrically control your signal's level. You can break that connection and detach the VCA from the filter by connecting a patch cable to the VCA output.

The VCA's CV input is normally connected to the filter's frequency CV input so you can easily modulate the filter cutoff and the VCA level with the same signal. You can break that connection by connecting a patch cable to the VCA CV input.

Each channel has two audio inputs with dedicated gain controls and one output volume control.
Thanks to clever routing, a wide variety of sounds can be created. The two channels can be connected in parallel or in series (Parallel / Series). In series connection, the output of channel 1 is still active, good for parallel signals (note: each channel output is phase-inverted in relation to the opposite input). This way, feedback can be generated by feeding back the signal from output 1 to e.g. a control voltage input.

The screen control voltage input determines the gain and the sound characteristics. Additionally, the input is normalized to INPUT 1 of the respective channel.

Orobas is a dual tube amplifier that is composed of two identical units.

Each channel has two audio inputs with dedicated gain controls and one output volume control.
Thanks to clever routing, a wide variety of sounds can be created. The two channels can be connected in parallel or in series (Parallel / Series). In series connection, the output of channel 1 is still active, good for parallel signals (note: each channel output is phase-inverted in relation to the opposite input). This way, feedback can be generated by feeding back the signal from output 1 to e.g. a control voltage input.

The screen control voltage input determines the gain and the sound characteristics. Additionally, the input is normalized to INPUT 1 of the respective channel.

The heart and soul of all synthesizers is the filter. And the most important one is the low-pass filter. And the Lowpass VCF & VCA is a modern, linear, 100% analogue filter. It works perfectly in any circumstances, and reacts "musically" within the most extreme set-ups as well.

It's very important to make the filter capable of receiving multiple audio signals, since the creation of a timbre often requires a few oscillators, noise generators, external sources perhaps. For this reason, AS built into the module a three channel mixer, and you can find here the post-filter VCA as well.

All the same applies on the reception of the CV signs. Besides the V/OCT input, there are two more adjustable CV inputs for the frequency modulation, and separate input for controlling the resonance, and one for the VCA level.

The filter reacts "musically". For example: if you turn up the resonance knob, you'll hear a soft sinus resonance. The sound won't fall apart, the filter won't start to "scream". Besides of all, a Resonance Boost circuit was built into the filter, which makes sure that lifting the resonance won't let fade the range of deeper frequency.

And guess what! You can overload the filter! Give it a try, you'll hear a very pleasant drive effect. This effect is based on the attribute of the filter's own circuit, not by a built-in distortion.

For the sake of comfortable application, the input of the Freq CV2 can be assigned to the VCA CV input by using its own switch. In this case the same generator is capable of modulating the frequency of the filter, and the amplitude of the VCA as well.

All through the project of developing this module, created all those circuits one by one, which are an absolute necessity to create a sound. The purpose was to fit them all into one module. That's how this composite and compact module was born, and got named MODULATION TOOLS.

All the parts of this module have their own in- and output, but it also has several internal connections as well. These connections can be disconnected too, you just have to plug a cable into an input. So all the parts of this module are capable of working altogether or separately as well.

How is this possible? Let's see!

The NOISE GENERATOR output connects to the SAMPLE & HOLD input. The SAMPLE & HOLD output connects into the GLIDE. The SYNC LFO triggers the SAMPLE & HOLD, so we get a synchable random generator.

Using a switch you can select the waveform you wish to have on the input of the VCA & INVERTER. In addition, the VCA & INVERTER has its own level control potentiometer, own CV input, also has normal and inverse output as well.

The SYNC LFO is capable of working in two different modes. Using the NORMAL mode the frequency can be controlled by the RATE potentiometer between 0,05Hz and 50Hz. In MATH mode the Rate potentiometer works as a divider, so the incoming sync pulse, or TAP can be divided or multiplied too. x1,5; x2; x3; x4; /1,5; /2; /3; /4

Besides all of these features, the SYNC LFO has SYNC, RESET and CV inputs too, also has individual SQUARE and TRIANGLE outputs. You can adjust the CV input level, and select if you want it to affect either the RATE or the SHAPE. Using the SHAPE potentiometer, you can set the pulse width of the square wave, also the triangle wave can be adjusted either to saw and ramp form as well.

With the CV input selected on RATE in MATH mode, you can switch between the DIVIDER settings from the keyboard of your synthesizer or sequencer. It gives you the possibility of changing or modifying the beats of the LFO, to the rhythm of your music. This gives you very exciting possibilities to compose rhythmic modulation.
