Akira Arasawa - "Panorama New Touch" (6:33)
OR - "Hammock Beats" (4:15)
Ground & MAYUKo - "Liquidanz" (9:21)
Hutte Sound System - "Fire Fly" (4:54)
Review: Akira Arasawa opens up with psychedelic Balearic house on 'Panorama New Touch' while OR's 'Hammock Beats' is glitchy and low-slung downtempo. On the flip is the nine-minute head melter 'Liquidanz' with its rippling synth modulations and Hutte Sound System close down with the dreamy end of the night soother 'Fire Fly'. Thsi mproject sees Especial Specials joining forces ed up with Chillmountain Recordings - a label from Osaka, Japan - on a series of new EPs, this being the first of hopefully many. The idea is to show the world the talents the label has at its disposal. It's definitely a case of mission accomplished on this evidence.

We Call Love (DJ Harvey remix)
Review: Art Department and Crosstown Rebels seem to have taken the house world by storm in the last two years. Kenny Glasgow and Jonny White's "We Call Love" has been picked apart carefully put back together again by the legendary Balearic beardo DJ Harvey for a limited one sided, hand stamped, hand numbered white label. Slow burning and downtempo, "We Call Love" plays with the original's raw electric guitar melodies, piercing key sequences and chopped vocal snippets. Sensual and lethargically bouncy, it's a late night house track made in typical modern and blase style from the CR camp. Be quick!

I Believe In Miracles (3:30)
No Nos Pararan (6:48)
Review: In 2011, Banda Achilifunk & OJO served up Gitano Real, one of the year's most essential albums. It was caned far and wide by funk lovers, in particular Craig Charles on his 6 Music show. Now, two cover versions taken from the essential album have been pressed to limited edition translucent yellow vinyl. First up, 'I Believe in Miracles' is an overwhelming take on the Jackson Sisters classic with plenty of happy Latin vibes and rumba funk rhythms. Flip it over for a more abstract version of McFadden and Whitehead's seminal 'Ain't No Stoping Us Now' which is a soulful disco number packed with sunshine.

Berobreo - "White Rabbit" (5:19)
The Magic Track - "Jamming With Mom" (5:34)
Oldchap - "I Want To Show You" (5:16)
Alexny - "Not Bad" (5:36)
Review: The Moiss Music label seems to like to drop their EPs two at a time. They did it in February and they're doing it again in May. This eighth outing collects four more lively disco cuts, each with their own subtle influences. Berobreo's 'White Rabbit' for instance has funky undertones with loopy guitar riffs and nice breaks. The Magic Track's 'Jamming With Mom' meanwhile is more sensuous and deep, with late-night synth work and seductive vocals. Oldchap's 'I Want To Show You' has an expressive soul vocal with more low-slung grooves and Alexny's 'Not Bad' then gets quick, clipped and loopy for its lip-pouting disco thrills.

Maurice McGee - "Styx" (DJ Rocca 808 edit) (6:24)
Orlando Johnson - "Turn The Music On" (Re Tide remix) (6:53)
Review: More from re-launched Italo-disco era label Full Time Records, who here present four fresh reworks of tracks from the vaults. G.A.M.M-signed scalpel hero Moplen steps up first to deliver a fine dubbed-out re-edit of Boeing's slap bass-propelled electrofunk classic "Dance To The Beat", before Massimo Beradi adds a little subtle, mid-tempo house flavour to Electric Mind's lesser-celebrated 1982 Italo-disco jam "Summing Up". DJ Rocca opens side B in some style, hammering away at a TR-808 drum machine while giving Maurice McGee's 1984 cut "Styx" an altogether deeper vibe. Meanwhile, Re-Tide turn Orlando Johnson's Paradise Garage favourite "Turn The Music On" into a muscular chunk of bass-propelled boogie-house badness.

It's Hot (reissue)
Cat: AFS 034. Rel: 02 Dec 19
Burnin' Beat (It's Hot) (11:00)
Searchin' (10:21)
Review: It would be fair to say that the Afro Synth label has dug deep for this latest reissue. Little is known about Burnin Beat, an obscure South African disco outfit who released their sole 12", It's Hot, on RPM way back in 1979. They're a great example of an outfit that, for whatever reason, fell through the cracks. The title track, a lolloping, 11-minute disco workout rich in fluid synth lines, rubbery slap bass, sparring instrument solos and the powerful vocals of Olive Masigna, is something of a long-lost gem. Original flipside "Searchin" is almost as good, with Masigna adding a touching vocal to a backing track that pushes the band's favourite Moog synthesizer to the fore.

By Design - "Stir It Together"
Osmose - "Al Knows What's Up"
Osmose - "Slomo Tattoo Dubbed"
Review: Cruising nice and easy into earshot on the Smokecloud imprint, byDesign and Osmose take a side each in chopping up some choice old classics with a tender touch to work in modern contexts. byDesign gets the whole A-side to roam over with a version of Diana King's cover of the Bob Marley classic, "Stir It Up", working on a 90s flavoured hip hop groove and dubby cuts of King's vocal. On the flip, Osmose is having a lot of fun working on Alexander O'Neal's "Fake", keeping the tough beat intact and instead letting the effects bring in the changes. While the origin of the last track on the 12" is undetectable at this point, "Slomo Tattoo Dubbed" comes on like a prime slice of Balearic goodness, packing easy horn blasts, funky guitar licks and a whole lot of filter action.

Review: Z Recordings chief Dave Lee has teamed up on this one with Omar, a prolific multi-instrumentalist who was awarded an MBE in 2012 for services to music. The result is 'Starlight', a serving of emotive soul funk with a nod to legend Stevie Wonder. Over on the flip, we have the late night boogie-down vibe of Destiny II's 'I'm Here For This' featuring Aria Lyric's powerful vocal delivery, underpinned by an uplifting arrangement that has summertime vibes abound. A new project by Lee, it debuted earlier this year with the excellent 'Play 2 Win'

Dr Packer - "Your Big Chance" (5:47)
Hotmood - "Raw Dance" (6:08)
Review: Masterworks Music mastermind 80's Child unleashes the third volume of his Masterworks compilations. This is a two-part vinyl release with the first part featuring The Funk District hailing from Cancun, who kicks off the A side with "The Funky Joint". He gets a good ol' time shuffle going before handing it over to Parisian Oldchap for a proper low-slung boogie in the form of "To The Top". On the flip, Godfather of the western Australian dance scene Dr. Packer gets down with a wicked edit on the late night sexiness of "Your Big Chance" and fellow Mexican Hotmood goes out on a high note with smokin' hot vocal number "Raw Dance".

Orlando Riva Sound - "Body To Body Boogie" (Late Nite Tuff Guy edit) (5:30)
The Salsoul Orchestra - "Ooh I Love It (Love Break)" (Late Nite Tuff Guy Muscle edit) (6:42)
Review: Salsoul has always been good at getting contemporary producers to reinterpret classics from its bulging catalogue, with recent years bringing fresh edits and reworks by The Reflex, Moplen, DJ Pope, Dimitri From Paris and Late Nite Tuff Guy. Here the latter returns with a second helping of tastefully tooled-up revisions. The Australian producer kicks things off with a warm and woozy hybrid disco/house take on Instant Funk's "I Got My Mind Made Up" that's quite a departure from the original mix. Over on side B, he turns in a languid and groovy, mid-tempo house version of Orlando Riva Sound's overlooked "Body To Body Boogie" before successfully revising Salsoul Orchestra's much-loved "Ooh, I Love It (Love Break)" whilst retaining most of the original vocals and instrumentation.

Review: The third multi-artist EP from Hot Digits' occasional vinyl series, Wax Digits, is packed to the rafters with dancefloor-focused re-edits and reworks. Labor Of Love leads the way with "Move That Thang", a fine chunk of warm and bass heavy deep house/disco fusion, before Osmose steals the show with the loopy mid-tempo disco-funk bump of "Let Harry Rock". Over on Side B, The Silver Rider impresses via the swirling disco-house hypnotism of 'Groove On Down", before experienced re-editor P-Sol pairs locked-in grooves with sun-kissed disco instrumentation and heady vocal snippets on "Sturdy Disco".

Review: Having set out their stall via a fine first collaborative release on Bordello a Parigi a couple of months back, Mytron and Ofofo pitch up on Multi-Culti. As you'd expect from a label with such a strong track record of multi-cultural musical fusion, much of the EP defies easy categorization. Sure, you'll find a chunk of Italo-influenced electro ("Non-Binary Joys on the Venus Holodeck") and a couple of slabs of madcap disco-funk fusion ("Si Jambo" and "2Tac Onana"), but also a heavyweight slab of low-slung punk-funk/post disco ("Czary Mary"). Oh, and the skewed electro-funk-meets-intergalactic synth pop insanity of "Something for Your Mind", which also boasts some notably brain-melting vocoder action. More, please!

Review: Following on from the bumper compilation on Z Records of all the label's greatest hist, boss man Joey Negro offers up a third volume of 12"s. He goes first with a nice loose mix of 'Love Hangover' that bumps in all the right places. Opolopo's 'Get On Up' is a dazzling cut with cosmic chords and long legged drums that move you to your core, then Joey is back with a slick dubwise version of the classic TW Funkmasters cut 'Love Money.' Last of all, 'Far Beyond' is a reflective closer with far-sighted chords and a late night glow.

The Noodleman - "That Word Again"
Sleazy McQueen - "Take It Ez"
Osmose - "I Was"
Review: Slo-mo, steamy and sexy... Those three words could sum up pretty much every excellent Smokecloud release, but these three tracks are purpose built for the more sensual sessions you might wish to soundtrack. Each one purrs with low-end sultriness while shimmering with all the disco motifs we've come to expect from such a discerning label. Noodleman's "That Word Again" finds inspiration in the German quarters, Sleazy McQueen devilishly teases us with vocal fractures buried deep under a throbbing bass groove and finally Osmose brings us to the most hypnotic close possible with a bed of dubbed out percussion and otherworldly loops that build and twist. Ready for bed yet?

Double Exposure - "Everyman" (Joey Negro's Salsoul Strut) (7:18)
Review: The latest volume in Z Records' essential "Attack The Dancefloor" 12" series draws together some killer recent rubs by Dave Lee AKA Joey Negro. He first delivers a "Re-Organised Master Mix" of the O'Jays' 80s electrofunk sing-along "Put Our Heads Together", wisely emphasizing the vocals and killer synthesizer motifs, before offering up an "extended rebuild" of his classic Doug Willis cut "Dancin' 2020" that smothers a soaring disco track with spacey synth solos and jaunty pianos. Side B sports an organ-heavy "In Full Swing" remix of Sunkids and Chance's U.S garage classic "Rescue Me", as well a scene-stealing rework of Double Exposure's Salsoul classic "Everyman". While the whole EP is impressive, the latter is particularly inspired.

Barely letting us clock for a second that these are in any way electronically programmed or sequenced, this fresh Compost Records 12" hears its two new cuts, 'Faith' and 'San Diago', abound in the ambered, sandy interim of a clear-skied evening, in which cocktails flow and smiles widen. Review: Obscure & Obsolete have pulled together a collection of dazzling disco tunes from various vital artists. The a-side features two visions of big hearted and triumphant tunes from British-Nigerian singer, actress and artist Patti Boulaye. Full of celebratory horns and big vocals, it's a real gem. Juan Torres's "El Arbusto (In The Bush)" is a more strident and cosmic affair with plenty of retro-future flourishes and the lost dub of Kikrokos's "Jungle DJ" sinks into a funk-licked groove with skyward pads taking your mind into the cosmos. Methusalem's mid tempo, hip swinging "Robotism" closes out in deep cut fashion.

Before now, no one has quite known the proper title of these tracks as they were on white label only, but now that is cleared up once and for all. "Bad Guy Good Guy" opens with a killer bit of early '80s jazz funk with boogie bass vibes while the infectious guitars and summery leads also colour the flipside - "Synth Good Guy " is still as glorious and full of radiant sunshine as it was back when first put out.

Sitting somewhere between Banco De Gaia, Prins Thomas and Henrik Schwarz, each cut deftly fuses faraway eastern instrumentation with the headier, cyclic loopy signatures of late night tech. Review: French disco funk revivalists Boogie Times continue their earnest endeavours to officially reissue those lesser known gems from the 1980s archives of labels of days gone by - swiftly gaining a rep as the transatlantic brothers in arms for Juno favourites Peoples Potential Unlimited. The latest drop sees the Boogie Times spotlight fall on the undeniably heavy sounds of Ocie III, whose "What's My Return On Love" comes across like a funked up Luther Vandross dosed up on Viagra. The flip brings a remix from Tony Massera that tightens up the groove, lays down some added percussion and lets that the low end growl lead the way.

This Private Disco Show 12" should be seen less as Odessa cover version of Lime and more a homage to the husband-wife partnership with the same style of impossible-to-forget neon synth hook and sultry vocals. Loaded with '80s energy and hooky simplicity, it comes complete with an instrumental for those not brave enough to go all-out diva.

Little Boxes (feat Guavatron - 40 Thieves version) (10:27)
Review: Cole Odin debuted on Leng in 2020 when he served up the super 'Numbers Game' tune as part of the label's 10th anniversary compilation. He now makes a welcome return, this time with the go-slow king that is Eddie C. Between them they cook up a perfectly low-slung tune in 'Little Boxes.' It has effects-laden guitars and kaleidoscopic electronics that lock you into a chugging yet cosmic groove and take you on a real trip to the stars. On the flip is an epic 10 minute-plus version from 40 Thieves that really ups the starry eyed vibes and expansive chords.

Use It Up & Wear It Out (Mike Maurro mix) (8:14)
Review: Originally released back in 1977, 'Native New Yorker' is considered by some as one of the greatest disco productions ever. Odyssey was originally formed in 1968 by Virgin Islands born sisters Carmen, Lillian and Louise Lopez. Lillian and Louise later teamed up with Filipino producer Tony Reynolds where they explored a more pop-oriented sound as heard here. Brookside Records dug through the Sony vaults and came up with a pair of remixes by NYC 'mixmaster ' Mike Maurro. The A-side's Extended version has a long extended intro, break and extended instrumental sections. On the flip, 'Use It Up and Wear It Out' boosts the rhythm section and adds subtle changes while staying respectful to the original sound
