Review: The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band has become the latest jewel in the Big Crown. Lead by Bjorn Wagner, they have stopped several essential recordings not he label, all defined by their famous steel pan sound. Often they turn to covers of the classics such as they did back in March and this time around they take aim at the much loved and low slung hip-hop classic 'Nuthin' But A G Thang' by Dr Dre. In their hands it becomes something else entirely but still delightfully low slung and sleazy. This one is backed with 'How We Do' which is another loveably fresh sound.

Review: These previously unreleased tracks from Revelations member Phillip Balou were offered to Super Disco Edits by one-time British soul journalist David Nathan, who worked alongside the musician and band mate John Simmons at the tail end of the 1970s. A-side "Ain't Nothing Like The Love", a gospel inspired slice of sumptuous soul complete with jazzy guitar solos and an evocative lead vocal from Ballou, is undoubtedly the pick of the two tracks and well worth anyone's hard-earned cash. That said, deep and sugary flipside "For Real" - a thrillingly evocative slow jam full of gospel style choral backing vocals, sumptuous electric piano and sweeping, synthesized strings - is almost as good.

Review: The BA label is back with more super essential, late-60s rocksteady goodness here. this one finds the one and only Bobby Aitken & The Carib Beats doing their thing on a mega rework of Curtis Mayfield's classic 'Keep On Pushing' which features Lloyd Robinson and Glen Brown on vocals. The beats are raw and the guitars earthy with falsetto vocals soaring up top. On the flip is 'Soul Special' which is more laidback and chilled with spoken word musings and whimsical flute.

Review: High Note and Dub Store Japan delve into the 1977 album "One Essence" by Cedric "Im" Brooks for their next tasty 7". The saxophonist, composer and musical arranger who fused reggae with jazz, sometimes under the watchful eye of the legendary Coxsone Dodd, was a pioneering force in the evolution of reggae away from its more traditional roots. A-side "Blackness Of Darkness" is a gorgeous cut with a sombre lead trumpet line hanging above bubbly, earthy drums and embellished with golden chords and funky bass that will surely find favour with fans of parties like You're A Melody. "Africa Calling" is a slower, deeper lament with more recognisable reggae rhythms.

Review: During the 1970s, Cornell Campbell made some fantastic records with producer Bunny Lee. 'My Baby Just Care For Me', a favourite amongst the lovers rock-powered 1970s blues party scene in London, is undoubtedly one of their best joint efforts. The riddim is loose and languid, the added piano solos pleasingly expressive and jangling, and Campbell soulful lead vocal tterly beguiling. Chunkier, more dancefloor-friendly roots reggae vibes are the order of the day on flipside cut 'Jah Jah He Morn Ya', where Campbell's vocal improvisation between verses add even more energy to an already heavyweight jam. In a word: essential.

Review: Soul Junction's latest release brings together two sought-after heavy soul cuts from the studio of the Poindexter Brothers: their own 1969 heater "What I Did In The Street (I Should Have Done At Home)" - a sweet, Vibraphone-sporting slab of rasping, full-throated, horn-heavy sixties soul just dripping with emotion - and a killer cut they produced a year earlier for singer Vivian Copeland. You'll find that song, "Chaos In My Heart", on the A-side. Originally released on Bell, it's an attractive and additive mid-tempo number in which Copeland's fine vocals come supported by low-register horns, shuffling soul grooves and some suitably heavenly backing vocals.

Review: Whether or not it is a coincidence that we are fast approaching 420 and ever more weed-related 7"s are dropping we do not know, but nor do we care. Culture's 'Callie Weed Song' is going to bang whatever day of the year you drop it, so long as you play it loud. It's got carefree keys and ganglier guitars accompanying the traditional reggae groove and some super stoned-sounding vocal musings on top. Joe Gibbs & The Professionals then appear on the flip with something just as summer, laid back and seductive in the form of the great 'Golden River.' Let's not get into what that title may or may not refer to.

Review: This sizzling new 7" from Super Disco Edits serves up Dayton's 'Sky's The Limit' which is a red hot slice of previously unissued 1982 soul.Hall of fun famers Dayton were a well established and popular group with a lush sound that was couched in soul but with funky grooves, boogie basslines and hints of disco shimmer and shine. This gorgeous single has all that and more including a big, buttery vocal. It is an epic, guaranteed floor filler which on the flip side has 'Sky's The Limit (long version)' for extra devastation.

Review: Some seriously classic soul vibes shine bright on this new 45 rpm from Dayton Grey. It's one that will have Northern Soul fans in a spin too, literally and emotionally, with its gorgeously sweet and smooth vocals. They soar over nimble drums and swooping strings that add the lushness on A-side 'Love Is On The Line.' On the flip, 'He Won't Love You (Like I Do)' slows things down and wallows in more mournful vocals and sombre melodies over heavier-hearted drums. Both tunes are life-enriching for different reasons.

Review: Not since Wet Leg has a duo appeared on the UK indie scene with such hype. Disgusting Sisters have had a dream start playing Reading and Leeds, Left of the Dial, Pitchfork Paris and The Great Escape First 50 before even releasing their debut single. 'Killing It' comes out via The Speedy Wunderground 7" single series. The series has been a launch pad for the likes of Black Country, New Road, Squid and Black Midi, who have all gone on to great things. We can expect nothing less for Anglo-French sibling duo Disgusting Sisters - they will be a much bigger band within a few months of this single being released. And this irreverent, funny single will become a collector's item.

Review: Calgary's DJ Cosm, scar-faced veteran of hip-hop, has been immersed in the culture since toddlerhood. Longtime host of The Main Ingredient mix show on CJSW 90.9, he's furthermore half of the celebrated rap duo Dragon Fli Empire. On his latest 7", Cosm merges golden era influences with modern boom bap production, drawing from his digital album Natural Within; kicking off with the hard-hitting 'Rome', which corrals fellow rappers Daniel Son and Saipher Soze, then moving on to the funky boom-bapper 'Leave The Bells' with Halfcut and Ghettosocks, we're in good company with Cosm's signature scratches. On the B, 'All Or Nothing' brings a fierce break, with Adam Bomb, Mercules, Fortified Mind, and Halfcut laying down sharpened verses.

Review: UK favourites Dub Pistols are back with the second release in their Version excursion series. The original is a great cover an Edie Brickell classic which brings this outfit's usual blend of ska, 2-tone and dub to the fore. The drums are mid-tempo and have a real swagger while the sub-bass adds serious weight, gentle wood block hits and rim shots pepper the mix and the lovely vocal from Prince Fatty regular Shniece brings seductive and smoky soul. On their 'What I Am Manasseh Dub' things get more laden with echo and reverb and mixing desk effects twist the low ends into perfect stoner territory.

Review: First released way back in 1982 on Greensleeves, Eek-A-Mouse's 'Ganja Smuggling' is a towering example of early 80s "singjaying", a style of reggae vocal improv made popular by its combination of toasting and singing. Here we open with an asphyxial, spitballing steppers sound, as 'Mouse is heard scatting and bidi-bonging in his signature opening style, shortly before launching into a cautionary tale about working as a border lines marijuana smuggler. The track deals in a stoic, forborne whimsy, comically scatting and riff-licking through what is implicitly portrayed as an otherwise thankless and unforgiving task. This 7" reissue marks an important milestone in Greensleeves' release catalogue, harking back to one of Eek's earliest cuts laid down with kingpin producer Henry "Junjo" Lawes, the association with whom helped fuel Eek's early celebrity.

Review: Bobby Ellis is behind 'Ska Baby', which was produced and directed by the Upsetter and now comes backed with a lush dub and a custom bag. It's actually one of the more subtle instrumentals to come from the famous Black Ark studio founded by Lee "Scratch" Perry and epitomises a warm day, beer in hand, dusty dry earth beneath your feet as you saunter though downtown Jamaica. Well, we assume this is how it must feel, never having been there during the 70s or 80s ourselves. Whatever, it's a perfectly organic and authentic vibe that is perfectly transportative.

Review: A new school roots tune from Bruges, Belgium that draws on a rich heritage of reggae and dub and adds some fresh modern twists. The vocalist Emma delivers a nice and airy, breezy vocal that floats up top over the rumbling rhythm and fine production by Dub Traveller. It's got plenty of natty chords, organic percussive textures and neat melodies and on the flipside, Dub Traveller & Roots Explosion hook up for 'Free Dub' which is a cavernous dub with lots of room for you to get lost in as you marvel at the studio desk magic unfolding around you.

Review: Newcomers Energy MC2 are exactly the sort of ensemble needed by the supremely funky Soul Junction imprint. The label have done a great job in continuously finding new, raw talent in the soul game, and these dudes know the score. "If You Break It" features the voice of Vincent Bonham, and it's a veritable lovers tune, made for dance floor antics and Saturday night romance, whereas "Other Side Of The Mirror" is more of a soulful abstraction, a gorgeous little ballad led by the delicate, majestic vocals of Arnell Carmichael. Review: First released in 2007 and here reissued for the first time since, Jennifer Lara's inspired reggae cover of Marlena Shaw's 1968 soul classic "Woman Of The Ghetto" was reportedly one of the last recordings made by both Lara and producer Clement Seymour "Sir Coxsone" Dodd. It remains a stunning version, with Lara's weary, heartfelt vocal working perfectly with the chunky, dub-wise riddim provided by the Jackie Mittoo-fronted Sound Dimension backing band. The trippy, flipside "Side Walk Doctor Version" revision is arguably even better, with snippets of Lara's vocal echoing across Dodd's formidably dubbed-out soundscape.

'Midnight' is a louche, smooth-as-sin nocturne punctuated by hammond wobbles, whispered nothings and surely one of the most in-the-pocket basslines in reggae history and the legendary Lloyd Charmers gives it a sparse, small hours dubbing on the B-side, removing all fat and showcasing the unparalleled rhythm section. Review: Minimal Wave presents an exquisite 7" EP release by Martin Lloyd entitled "L'Amant Electronique". Martin is mainly known for his Oppenheimer Analysis (Minimal Wave) and Analysis (Survival Records) projects, yet through the years he recorded over two dozen tracks on his own, most of which never saw the light of day. The four selected tracks were recorded between 1980 and 1984 in his own "Feedback Studios" in Battersea , London. Martin Lloyd delivers vocals via the vocoder and carefully layers synth melodies which range from upbeat and danceable, to what could be the soundtrack to a 1981 post-apocalyptic science fiction film. The record is pressed on white vinyl with a heavy black jacket (spot gloss) and is limited to 999 hand-numbered copies.

Review: Just a month after dropping their first 7" in the form of a sweet and funky version of classic hip-hop joint from the 90s, Alloy Cuts is back. Once again, Booty Hall is involved this time facing off against Carla Marshall, a known talent from the roots and reggae world. The resulting sounds start with 'All Night Champion', which has raw and dusty breaks, old school stabs and funky drums topped off with a mix of early hip-hop vocals and soulful coos. 'Champinstrumental' on the flip cuts back the vocals to a more direct dance floor instrumental.

Review: There is no rest for the good people at Super Disco Edits - they ended 2021 in fine fashion and kick off 2022 on just as strong a footing. This time out they serve up a superb slice of soul originally recorded in 1971 by The Michicgans, who crafted it in the Don Davis studios and had it engineered by the late great Ed Wolfdrum. 'Look At My Back Wheels' has drums to die for - they're dumpy and well defined yet loose, with unique vocals up top with a raw blue eyed funk. Flip it over and you will find the slower, more romantic soul sounds of 'It's All Coming Back to Me.'

Emerging in the late 1970s from Kingston, he rose to prominence working with legendary producer Yabby You, delivering hits that addressed social injustice, spirituality and inner strength. 'Know The Right' by Michael Prophet is one of those roots reggae gems that blends signature conscious lyrics with a smooth, hypnotic groove. Review: Stop us if you've heard this one before. Lee "Scratch" Perry walks into a Quasi Dub Development recording session somewhere in New York. He begins to freestyle in that surrealist, escapist, hallucinogenic kind of way we still love him for, and the results eventually make their way onto 2014's record, Little Twister. The rest, as they say, is history. Or maybe not quite. Four years after the world lost Perry's enigmatic poetry and pioneering contributions to dub, Pingipung, the label that carried that aforementioned LP, unearths the tape of one track from the collection the bosses clearly feel deserves more attention. 'Let's Communicate' is as intoxicating now as it was back then. Then contemporary UK dub don Elijah Minnelli steps up to deliver an alternative version that stands up on its own. No mean feat.
