Abstract Grooves Vol 2
Cat: AVG 002. Rel: 04 Dec 24
Day 2 Night
Feet Amongst The Clouds
AM Bubbles
Review: ??? is behind Abstract Grooves Vol 2 and delivers a very solid follow-up to their debut on Tackle Audio, showcasing a perfect fusion of tech house and dub reggae influences. 'Day 2 Night' opens the release with a vibrant and upbeat tech house groove. It's full of energy, with a funky rhythm that makes it an instant dancefloor mover, highlighting the producer's ability to blend dub vibes into the house sound. 'Feet Amongst The Clouds' introduces a smoother, more atmospheric feel, driven by a strong reggae vocal sample and heavy dub influence. The fusion of reggae with house adds depth and a soulful edge to the groove, making it equally suited for both relaxed listening and dancefloor sessions. On the flip side, 'AM Bubbles' slows things down with a laid-back dub jam, perfect for winding down while maintaining the dub house vibe. Perhaps, our favourite of the three songs. Abstract Grooves Vol 2 is an impressive, genre-blurring release from Tackle Audio, blending funk, dub, and house seamlessly.

&ME & Black Coffee - "The Rapture Pt III" (8:06)
&ME - "LIFE" (7:35)
Review: &Me and Black Coffee make for something of an Afro house dream team here. The latter has long been this sound's pin-up and has gone from playing in South African townships to producing with Beyonce and winning Grammy Awards over the last decade. Now deep in his latest Ibiza season, he unveils collaborative track 'The Rapture' (Pt III), a deep rolling cut with spine-tingling chords and a rich atmosphere. &ME then goes solo for 'LIFE', a shuffling percussive groove with spoken words and enchanting chords to make for a classy two-tracker.

Machines Of May (7:25)
Gadget (7:21)
Dark As Night (7:43)
Swiss (6:26)
Review: Since returning to action in 2016 after a seven-year break, 1990s techno survivor Lee Renacre AKA 100 Hz has released some of the best music of his career. This fine four-tracker marks the long-serving Londoner's first outing on Romanian imprint Amphia, who are best known for serving up sparse, minimalistic tech-house. As you'd expect, there's a slightly fuller sound here, though sonically it's as pleasingly druggy and mind-mangling as much of the imprint's output. Renacre brilliantly flits between trippy, arpeggio-driven, house-tempo techno (the otherworldly 'Machines of May'), dubstep-influenced UK bass/techno fusion ('Gadget', which echoes the ethos of his early 100 Hz releases with James Chapman), intergalactic tech-house ('Dark as Night'), and frankly filthy low-end wobblers ('Swiss').

Lick My Chain (4:44)
Lick My Chain (PSL remix) (5:56)
Review: A solid four track EP on Step Ball Chain records blending minimal and tech house with a splash of techno. offering a diverse range of sounds for late-night dancefloors. Side-1 starts with 'Do U Want Me', a playful peak-time house track filled with nostalgic old-school samples and a serious grooveiperfect for keeping the energy up during those late-night sets. It's followed by 'Make Me', which shifts gears into a dubby mix of dubstep and liquid drum 'n' bass, offering a bass-heavy, laid-back vibe. On Side-2, 'Bassy Bits' drives things forward with its fast-paced tech house beats and dirty bassline, making it a DJ-friendly gem designed to shake the dancefloor. Then there's 'Lick My Chain', a deeper, moodier track with a wall-shaking bassline and a futuristic, sensual atmosphereia slick, immersive cut for those looking to bring the energy down but keep the intensity up. Rounding off the EP is the 'Lick My Chain' (PSL remix), which adds a techy edge and a sexy vocal, transforming the track into a late-night anthem. Overall, Step Ball Chain Holland is a versatile release for tech house and electro fans alike.

Feel A Little Strange

Feel A Little Strange (5:33)
Micro (6:09)
Dwelling (4:56)
Review: 2Phargon is an alias from Lee Mortimer, aka Friend Within, Sawtooth Sucka and many more names. Mortimer's prolific output speaks to his skill in the studio, which is of course why he was picked up by the mighty Dirtybird for this 12" of appropriately quirky groovers catering to the vibe Claude Vonstroke et al have been championing all these years. 'Feel A Little Strange' is a big, bashy rave monster with buzzing rave synths upfront and chunky tech house backbone to the beat, while the vocal sample waves the freak flag high. 'Micro' harks back to the mid 00s minimal sound Dirtybird emerged from, with plenty of playful and heady melodic flourishes to send the vibe skywards.

Stupidity (6:15)
Quantum Theory (6:46)
World In Our Head (7:08)
Sowie Lockers (5:46)
Review: Humanoid Recordings co-founder 4d lays down another four-track 12" for the label, scouring the weightier and scrapier ends of minimal and acid house, all while teasing out a retro-robotic edge. Only an artist with a real sense of humour can invoke ideas of 'Stupidity' and 'Quantum Theory' in the same breath; both tracks betray the unified whimsy and intelligence that a successful acid house and techno artist must portray in order to win hearts. The latter uses a particularly sticky, hard-to-pin-down 4x4 kick style; contrast to B1 'World In Our Head', which portrays a psychic model of the outside world through trilling trance lines, and the meek glissandos of 'Sowie Lockers', securing an indeterminate but funky mood.

8Kays & Juan Hansen - "Falling Down" (Chris Avantgarde remix) (6:52)
8Kays - "Lyra" (5:23)
Review: Watergate, the cult Berlin club known for its riverside location and legendary LED ceiling above the dancefloor, is also a reputable tech house label that deals in fresh names only. Here it is 8Kays that makes a debut with Falling Down, a selection of superb collaborations including 'Matematica' with Glowal which is tense and electric tech with indie vocals and with Juan Hansen he cooks up the medically hopeful 'Falling Down' which then gets two remixes. Colyn & Beswerda make it into a moody and deep groove, Chris Avantgarde brings some peak time prog energy and solo cut 'Lyra' has a warm, paddy broken beat to cruise on through the stars.

Let Me Hear Ya (5:34)
Delta (6:32)
Review: A For Alpha makes a brilliant release debut here on the hardline label and showcases a superb take on sexy, effective tech house. 'Dee Lite' has a slinky garage feel to the drums while molten acid-laced synths unfurl up top to keep things loose. 'Dark Bongos (I Believe)' is darker and more direct but with plenty of playfulness in the trippy and well-treated vocal stabs. 'Let Me Hear Ya' keeps it deep and mid-tempo with more killer bass and 'Delta' shuts down with gloppy sounds, shuffling beats and a cosmic edge.

About Time (6:57)

Receiver (14:37)
Review: There is no shortage of top labels to come out of Romania that deal in futuristic tech and minimal house fusions. Draganenii is one of the newer ones but one that is already making its own name. A R steps up with the imprint's fourth EP here and it kicks off with the clipped, punchy house of 'About Time' complete with late-night chords and prickly percussion. After that heavy stomper comes the more floating acid modulations and cosmic house of 'About Time', then 'Receiver' shuts down with wonky lines, gurgling bass and a trippy energy.

Let It Go (6:00)
New Doors (7:17)
Review: Norwegian tech house alchemist A:G has been busy in his lab conception more sonic concoctions for your dance floor delectation. His first spell is the magnificent 'Catching Up', pulsing and driving cut with astral melodies smeared across the airwaves as the scintillating drums shimmer down low. 'That's Not The Moon' comes on strong with its cyborg energy, twinkling melodic stars and leggy bassline all ramping up the vibes. There is a more stripped-back and marching militant feel to 'Impulses' where the busy melodic bassline rides up and down the scale. 'Let It Go' gets your head amongst the starts thanks to its air and fluttering lines and 'New Doors' is the most blissed out cosmic voyage of the lot.

Slow Disco Smoke Machine (7:10)
Deep Thought (7:34)
Train Meditation (7:37)
Review: A&A aka Anton Kubikov and Artem Rudakov, share a groovy, Detroit-influenced casualiser of an EP, bouncing between slipstreams of rubbery bass and slick, soulful chord voicings. Whatever said "blue transfer box" is, we're unsure whether it's wise to ask what exactly said box is transferring, or simply leave the mystery be. After all, it sounds great. And besides, we've also a 'Slow Disco Smoke Machine' to marvel at, one which wafts effortlessly between dreamboats of blue pad smoke and acidic stabs, facilitating the necessary headspace for 'Deep Thought'.

A² - "Glider" (6:58)
A² - "Let's Get It Together" (8:02)
Stopouts - "Sin City" (8:46)
Stopouts - "Kartwheel" (5:22)
Review: Planet Orange Records' fifth release is a four-tracker from the legendary minds behind Alien Recordings, aka A2 and Stopouts, who take one side each. From the opening moments, the Beyonders EP weaves a thread between the halcyon days of tech and minimal from the 90s but with forward-thinking energy. A²'s 'Glider' is a happy, piano-laced celebration to start with ,then 'Let's Get It Together' cuts loose with lithe pads and more mid-tempo drums. Stopouts steep up for the flip and soon melts the mind with some tightly woven acid and cosmic tech on 'Sin City' and 'Kartwheel' then brings a more freewheeling and loopy groove with some neon colours dripping down its face.

Review: What's that, a new year means a new label from Burnski? We'd expect nothing else. The man has more imprints than a beach has grains of sand, but importantly they all serve a purpose and all kick out killer jams. Mikasa starts with this lush and lithe prog house EP from Abdul Raeva. Stylish opener 'Cream' is a bouncy, feel-good and sleek electronic house sound for peak time fun. 'Helico' is laced with acid and 'Tex Mex' has psyched-out lines rising through the uplifting drums while 'Vanguard' shuts down with a percussive edge and a killer bassline.

Review: Marking the label's first release of this year, Passion de la Passion is a four-track excursion into wiggly cosmic craic from Physical Education. Packed with weird names like 'Ooga Booga Acid Time' and 'Karima's Duff Duff', it's evident that humour is central to the practice of releasing duo Abdul Raeva (real names Joonas Arro, Steffan Todorovic) who've been releasing since 2020 but not defined themselves quite so intently just yet. That changes with this EP, which charts four warp-driven space jams of sidereal proportions.

Spazza (5:41)
Eurotech (5:29)
Phaselock (6:13)
Crystal Palace (6:06)
Review: Abdul Raeva's 'No Risk No Reward' EP captures the spirit of minimal and tech house with four dynamic, dance-ready tracks. Side-1 kicks off with 'Spazza', a lively, upbeat tech house track primed for the dancefloor with an infectious groove. It's followed by 'Eurotech', which brings in a high-tech, acid-tinged vibe, nodding to the ravey energy of the 90s with an irresistible, driving beat. Side-2 transitions to a more introspective energy with 'Phaselock', a melodic and flighty piece that leans into late-night techno territory, with a hypnotic, trance-adjacent sound perfect for deeper, immersive moments. Closing the EP, 'Crystal Palace' dives into heavy acid rhythms, blending elements of acid trance to create a powerful, pulsing finish.

It kick off with a various artists affair packed with full flavour cosmic tech. Abdul Raeva opens up with the twinkling melodies and sleek tech drum work of 'Invasive Overdrive Track' then Aldonna's 'Inner Elation' gets more deep with a steamy whispered vocal and shimmering drums. Review: It's time to take your first steps into the Kulture Galerie, a new label that kicks off with a various artists offering which lays out is sonic mission in clear and compelling terms. This new venture from Metropolitan Soul Museum kicks off with the super fluid and liquid house sounds of Abdul Raeva's 'Grace' before Gene Tellem's 'Nervous Planet' gets all misty eyed and downtempo with a lush deep thinker. Nesa Azadikhah's 'Fleeting Emotions' then sets off a nice minimal vibe that is super warm and fuzzy and Alien D's 'Heavy Cream' is a float, breakbeat driven post-rave comedown.

Review: La Menace is a shadowy collective hailing from France committed to the craft of minimal tech house, with the focus squarely on the tunes on a series of various artist releases. This time around, the proceedings get going in fizzy, freakout style with Abdul Raeva's proggy stormer 'Concorde', while Ginko locks into a slender beat construction on 'Jungle Palazzo'. Takadoum creates an emotive strain of acid on 'Boulevard Hofmann' and MLM & Max Cohle get one of those groovesome, subby basslines rolling on the guaranteed floor worker 'Contraste (Anjou Mix)'. Ginko returns to close the EP out with the sparkling, shimmering splendour of lightly breakbeat-powered joint 'Hors Serie'.

His debut for the Parisian label Griffe records - 'Destination Unknown', which came out last year - now sees a few more copies hit our shelves. We're bowled over by the Todd Terry-like swing on the A, 'Abduction', while the techier, bell-chimingly charming tones of 'Wireless Talk' and 'Xtra D' zap us with surplus energy, leaving us with a boundless motivation to dance by the time the EP's coldwavey sci-fi closer, 'Pattern Recognition', rolls around.

Review: Acapulco Heat is a new duo from Acapulco made up of Felipe Valenzuela and new comer Ossios. They share a love of colourful shirts and making "sensual moves in the shade of palm trees" and here offer up a set of cuts designed to encourage dancefloor mindfulness. 'Intellectuelle' is a crispy tech house groove with thudding kicks and enough detail to keep the mind as locked as the heels. 'Gonna Do & Do It More Now' is a highlight on the flip - a trippy synth line buzzes about over flappy drum programming that suspends you in the groove. The one and only Titonton Duvante offers a remix that has a darker heart.

Review: Accented Measures is Kofi Agyeman, an Afro-German producer from Berlin now based in the UK. He started his own self titled label back in 2021 and now its third release - second on vinyl - drops with a real splash. His particular brand of club music is fulsome minimal, with fleshy basslines and smeared cosmic synths on 'Tension' making for a warm opener. The Harry Wills Ataraxia mix is much more direct and punchy, with freaky stabs and acid prickles in a busy arrangement. 'Upfront' (Like U 2 mix) is a bouncy one with feel-good and funky bass and 'PPDB' has a rotator feel with a turbocharged bassline. Serious tackle.

Review: Accented Measures Series (AMS) is a still relatively new series that has been compiled and arranged by Accented Measures and is designed to deal in unreleased and new music from some of the scene's key names. The Space Drift Remixes EP is next up the series with a combination of 90s vibes and modern grooves. '97NY' (TC80 remix) is heads down and raw as you like tech. 'Aeons' (Pedro Goya remix) rather spins you out on more silky cosmic pads and the Miles Ellis remix of 'Bad Sector' is thudding tech with rigid drums and washes of sugary synth. 'Space Draft' (Karaba remix) begins some serenity and smoothness to the final cut.

Review: Our latest favourite musical non-terrestrial intelligence, Acid For The Grandma, lays down a four-track sonic analysis of what it means to be human. Firstly, we're met with a serene 'Space Pass Over', as this geriatric grey-ette scans our biosphere for signs of life, unintimidated by the threat of interplanetary warfare, governmental misrepresentation or mass panic. Some conflicts break out - documented sonically on twin acid electro expressions, 'Clock Moods' and '/humans', both of which would be worthy of a new Voyager Golden Record - while the descending arpeggiations of 'Symptomystery' evoke the landing of the Grandma's spacecraft and the ultimate coming-back-down-to-Earth, a radical unity of alien and citizen.

Review: Alex Wolfenden and Negghead are back everyone: look out! Known together as the Acid Mondays, these lads throw down yet another session of dirty and adrenalised tech house for long sweaty nights on the island's super clubs. First track "Tacos Per Minute" features a booming bass backed by a sleek and sturdy rhythm and trippy chords. "Mezcalid" is a deeper and more organic sounding house cut with druggy horns, trippy vocal samples and as always: a lot bass driving the groove. It's reminiscent of old stuff by Andomat 3000 & Jan or Michel Cleis. Finally "Techno Wellys" is the peak time weapon on here and it's sure to work. A signal run through a heavy delay provides the track's driving and trippy melody above a furious tom drum work out and intermittent druggy vocal samples.

The title cut opens up with some lazy, wavy, dubby grooves with heady pads and then a dub version makes it even more fleshy and horizontal. 'Strolling' keeps things classy and deep cut with pillowy kicks toped with starry-eyed melodies and some glitchy perc. An cappella closes out the EP for DJ use. This is a quietly excellent 12" that oozes quality.

Last seen on the label's last compilation, the duo returns with a bunch of stunners which the label itself best describes as 'low slung, infectious cuts blurring the lines between house and techno' and truly showcase the signature sounds of these Harbour City heroes. The original version of "Flower Of Cane" sees the duo follow their darkest route into the abyss yet with this dark, druggy and heaving man room groove that follows in the tradition of classic Ruede Hagelstein or even local legends like Stephan Bodzin. "Ortus" is an adrenalised exercise in mood lighting; which is perfect to make a transition with its elevating EBM style bassline. The third offering "Relentless" (feat Jeppe Kjellberg of Danish electro-poppers Whomadewho) offers yet more quality but if you ask us: it's all about Andre Lodemann's vocal mix, which is so incredibly dreamy and evocative as always.

Sabb & Black Circle - "Vega" (6:29)
JAMIIE & Niko Schwind - "Suwedi" (7:24)
Emanuel Satie & Nanghiti - "Forever More" (4:59)
Review: Watergate welcomes back a crew of regular artists for an EP taken from the 27th instalment of its long running mix series. The Adana Twins kick off with a dark and bubbling minimal house number to set a late night mood then Sabb & Black Circle combine to great effect on the more uplifting, piano laced 'Vega', no doubt inspired by the house icon of the same name. Flip it over for 'Suwedi', a tech house track that traps you in a trance with computer melodies and last of all Emanuel Satie & Nanghiti get all spiritual and joyous with the warm house surges of 'Forever More.'

Vibrations (6:55)
Infinite Function (7:25)
Original Sin (8:12)
Vibrations (Malin Genie remix) (5:06)
Review: Fuse is one of those labels and parties that has a very distinctive sound and hardcore following for it. Spearheaded by Enzo Siracusa and now a real institution of the underground, here it looks to Admnti for three fresh new sounds. 'Vibrations' is kinetic future music that twists together wiry synths and tight tech drums into something irresistible. 'Infinite Function' is another brilliantly infectious mix of tech and dub that makes for high-speed groove-thrills and 'Original Sin' then takes a more spaced-out approach with warped acid lines. Malin Genie remixes the opener with a cool sense of deep house smoothness.

ADMNTi - "Liquor Locker" (7:55)
ADMNTi - "BetaSpace" (8:02)
Laidlaw - "Open To Receive" (5:07)
Laidlaw - "Repeated Patterns" (5:54)
Review: Sonder is a new London-based label dealing in sprightly tech house with plenty of wiggle. Cutting the ribbon is ADMNTi, who has been on superlative form via releases for Dansu Discs, 4Plae and Yamanu amongst others. His 'Liquor Locker' and 'BetaSpace' cuts are splashed with a little sunshine, some garage bump and subtle trance touches, all the better to grease up the dancefloor. Laidlaw takes up position on the flip, offering his own strain of shuffling funky stuff for the peak time crowd. 'Open To Receive' has a subtly spiritual slant to it, while 'Repeated Patterns' gets into a snaking house trip with cheeky hooks and snappy basslines for days.

Review: Haws comes of age with a superb 21st record, this time from Admo who offers up mature and muscular sounds from the tech house underground. 'Distance' mixes up leggy and rubbery drums with cute cosmic melodies and a coy sense of drum funk while 'Club Cabane' is more twitchy and punchy at heart, though the melodies remain playful. 'Synchronising' is brilliantly balmy and bubbly cosmic tech that is warm and wide open, and 'One Twenty' closes with more masterful drum programming.

A Visible Spectrum (5:24)

The Brawl (6:08)
Review: Quite the multi-national talent, German-based DJ Admo makes music that pulls from all manner of regional genre variations that cover the breadth of the house spectrum. From the groovier French cuts to his love of UK vocal samples, 'A Visible Specturm' seems apropos to Admo's mission. An instant favourite for us was track three, 'Spiders', a somewhat sinister tech house jam that would be the perfect soundtrack for sneaking, complete with nostalgic distorted vocal samples that sound like they are coming out of a Wiimote and goofy percussion stings. 'The Brawl' is another great cut from this four-track, a downtempo groove for the end of the night that wouldn't feel out of place in both a dirty Amsterdam hole-in-the-wall and an early 2000s cooking show - there's something deeply nostalgic about these sounds

Review: ADMO is making waves in the trance-house scene, having most recently released on respected labels like Automatic Writing and Ordinateuf. Now he's sidling up to Limousine Dream for a pleasure ride through the fizzes and pings of true roller 'Sasha's Spacehsip' and the snaking acid bounce of 'A Fish With Two Heads'. Keeping the sharp dancefloor instinct up on the flip, he showers down a cascade of brain-tickling sonics on 'Eyedrops' and lets the synths shimmer and swoop through 'Bathtub Rendezvous'. If it's pristine, crafty trance-tech-house you're after, this record is everything you've ever dreamt of.

Infinity808 (5:53)
Review: We are real fans of the PIV label out of the Netherlands for the way they have bright plenty of new thinking to house and tech. Their Limited label off-shoot is even more forward-thinking and this time welcomes ADR for some of their signature sounds. 'Daft Excluder' gets underway with flappy snares and a nice nebulous ecosystem of neon synth details and snappy drums. The Casey Spillman remix gets more punch with wet clicks and a garage tinge to the drums. 'Professor Magnet' sinks you into a bulbous bass line that is warped and fluid under snappy claps and 'Infinity808' brings nice and trippy electro vibes and a kinetic rhythm to close. It might be the best of the lot.

Bumpin (8:28)
Hugh Mungus (7:05)
Review: It's been a big breakthrough year for Aerofunk, who follows up recent releases for Silias, Fraise, Party Tricks and Subsequent to bring his snappy neo-rave gear to Humanoid. There's an almost big beat quality to some of the production flair here, as gnarly hardcore ingredients collide with some serious production chops in pursuit of serotonin-mashing thrills. 'Call Me' is rubbery acid techno with a playful demeanour and plenty of bleeps, while 'FOU' keeps the breakbeats up with a fierce intention which brings Plump DJs in their prime to mind. 'Bumpin' is rough and ready techno, but it's also sporting a plethora of snappy edits to keep things crafty.

Deadbeat & The Mole - "All Creepy No Sleepy" (5:45)
Review: It is no mean feat to last 10 years no matter your business, but to do so as a record label in this day and age is worthy of maximum respect. Fair play to Det Gode Selskab then for marking the occasion with a tidy new 12" that showcases just what the label is all about. There is chunky tech with grinding bass but lush old school melodies on 'Can't Cure Curiosity' while Alex Jangle & Matztam's 'Glowbones' cuts totally loose on dreamy synth daubs, painterly lines and rubbery house loops. Faer takes a more dark, heads-down path for his spooky 'Serious Repetions' and as you would expect of Deadbeat & The Mole they bring off-kilter loops, unbalanced drums and a ramshackle rhythm that will have you shaking your bones.
