Review: Here's the huge US release of Bah Samba's "Calma" on Louie Vega's own Vega Records imprint. This one is an absolute must for the fans of deep and Latin flavored organic house, with Louie doing it lovely on his remix. The perfect end of summer record, "Calma" is a lush Latin groover with loads of keyboards and a fantastic female vocal from Isabel Fructuoso riding on top.

Required Listening Vol 2 (Sampler 2)
Cat: DR 028. Rel: 31 Oct 07
Cobblestone - "Creator"
I Luv - "Starz"
Review: When Toronto-based and ever versatile label Do Right! released 'Required Listening' - a raw, diverse and stunning compilation of sounds by artists from Toronto
- critics and music lovers around the globe took notice. 'Required Listening Volume 2' promises to keep up that standard of quality by featuring fresh tracks from
the West Coast, to the East Coast, with some stops in between. Vancouver's Cobblestone Jazz, a band comprised of world-renowned techno producer Mathew
Johnson, programmer Tyger Dhula and keyboardist Danuel Dante who are known for their hype live shows and their jazzy, minimal techno sound heard on the
track 'Creator'. Johnson's own tracks have received critical acclaim and have been caned by Laurent Garnier, Richie Hawtin and Tiga. Cobblestone Jazz have
been steadily creating a buzz around Europe, and were recently featured on Gilles Peterson on BBC Radio 1. Also representing the West Coast is 8-member band
1 Luv along with vocalists Amaila Townsend, Deanna Teeple and Dawn Pemberton. Their groovy, soulful, jazzy house track 'Starz' explains why this band was
discovered by uber-crew Jazzanova and was featured on their 'Secret Love 2 Folk' compilation and how their music has been finding its way into the crates of
people like Phil Asher, Osunlade and Benji B. 'Starz' is taken from 1 Luv's debut album 'Neophilia' on Sonar Kollektiv.

She Can't Love You

She Can't Love You (original mix) (6:37)
She Can't Love You (Egyptian Lover mix) (6:28)
Maxx E (6:38)
Review: Under the Danced Til Midnight alias, DJ Andy Anderson has always produced music that eschews easy categorization. His two previous 12" singles successfully blended elements of funk, soul, disco, hip-hop, house and Afrobeat. This madcap, all-that-counts-is-the-dancefloor feel is continued on "She Can't Love You", which laces Ijeoma's soulful, R&B style vocal over a backing track that variously doffs a cap to fuzzy funk, boogie, breakbeat and disco-house. Similar could be said about the more breakbeat-minded "Maxx E", which feels like a reworked instrumental dub of the title track. Speaking of reworks, the EPs's highlight is arguably Egyptian Lover's punchy electro remake of "She Can't Love You".

Freheit Fur Die Oma
Applaus
Review: Sloppy drums that sound as cool as a skilled, but stoned funky drummer, lay the foundation to "Tanz In Theo's Beat Bar", the first track on this summery EP by an emerging collaboration between Glenn Astro and IMYRMiND. This latest record is the duo's third release, which this time lands on German label Box Aus Holz, and helps maintain the projects one-record-a-year output. Fans of Al Dobson Jr will enjoy the sounds on "Stimming Ne!?" - same goes with Hermine" (interlude II) - although the drums are much heavier this time, while hip hop themes and many-a woozy synth nestle their way into this generous seven-track EP.

Glenn Underground - "Spiritually Captured"
Isoul8 - "How I Feel" (feat Kaidi Tatham)
Isoul8 & Ricardo Miranda - "P Boogie"
Review: Heralding a quarter century of service for one of Italy's best-loved record stores, three certifiable house troubadours join forces to offer up tracks of the finest calibre, not least if you love old-school flavoured Chicago house music. Glenn Underground is up first with the Latino-tinged roller "Spiritually Captured", all charming chords and lightly drummed percussion. Isoul8 brings a more gutsy kind of acid house that both punches in the bottom end and bubbles delightfully on top before joining up with Ricardo Miranda for the sublime "P Boogie". Combining heartbreaking arpeggiated twinkles with expressive bass and luxuriant pads, a truly spellbinding track is crafted, and it's certainly not one to miss out on.

Review: Second vinyl single release from the 'Eleven' album, with two stunning remixes released commercially on vinyl for the first time. Lead cut 'Show Me Love', featuring Carleen Anderson on vocals, is restyled for the dancefloor, as is the driving, percussive 'Come Away With Me', featuring Maysa, on The Caves' 'A Greater Joy mix'. Both these cuts are already in-demand items. Completing the trio of tracks is one of the radio favourites from the album, the mellow 'It's Just One Of Those Things'.

Review: Relative newcomers Infradisco blend a Balearic sound of disco and house for the Italian label Archeo Recordings. Aqua Cheta is a blend of proper electronic examples of Balearic and chill out influences. 'Caduca' (Hear & Now remix) is ideal for the late-night scene with a blend a perfect blend of 80s and 90s but still sounding futuristic. Manu Archeo's remix of 'Dulcis' is a beautiful laid back downtempo jam that shimmers like a hazy day on the beach. We think you will like the organic and mystical 'Fluminea' as well. This EP couldn't finish any better than on the ambient tip with a soul warming float on the marina remix by Ocean Moon. Fans of Balearic, Cafe Del Mar and chill out music will treasure this EP no doubt. This 12" comes with a CD as well.

High All Time!
Salada Estrelar
The SOAP Song (feat Tom Trago)
Ginseng Root (feat Benny Badge)
Review: The ace Australian producer known as Inkswel makes a debut on the couldn't have named it better Dopeness Galore label with an EP of health conscious future boogie called The Ginseng Root EP. You should be hooked as soon as the saturated gospel vocal hook on opening track "High All Time!" attempts to make its presence felt amidst the crunched up and spat out electro flex, and from here Inkswel continues to feed samples through the masher on the sultry MPC workout "Salada Estrelar." Tom Trago fans watch out now, as the Voyage Direct boss appears flipside, gracing "The SOAP Song" with his esteemed presence with heavily fonked out results - just wait for the analogue bassline to arrive! Proceedings end with the Benny Page featuring title track which is steeped in that 92 era boogie/house vintage. Do check!

Make Me Crazy (Potatohead People remix - instrumental) (2:57)
Review: A Moodymann remix is a mad rare thing. The singular Detroit producer very rarely steps out to tackle other people's music but when he does the world takes note. This time he sets to work on 2022's 'Hold On To It' by Colonel Red and Inkswel. In his hands, it becomes a distinctively low sling bit of sleazy deep house with punctured drums, off-grid pianos and his own vocal mutterings. Potatohead People offer a more lush and soulful downbeat vibe, while a Moodorama Weird Mistake is perfect for late-night back rooms and the Moodorama Deep Rise mix is all bubbly bass and melodies that provide real musical comfort.

Between Whiles
During A Given Moment
Come Through
Review: His first new Inner Science material in over two years, here we find Masumi Nishimura diving deep into the ambient beat pool with seriously spacey results. "Between Whiles" recalls early Four Tet material, all bubbles and reoccurring motifs that linger in the background. "During A Given Moment" comes with a touch more drama, albeit a cosmic style of drama. With twinkling arpeggios and slurring beats, it's the soundtrack to a steamy robot love scene in a movie from the future. "Come Through" ends on a much more upbeat note with the same sleepy loops and sparkling melodies but placed over a more solid 4/4.

Cover Me
Stumbled Across
Creeps
All My Friends
Review: Iron Curtis' debut for the Retreat imprint overseen by Yanneck Salvo aka Quarion and Session Victim's Hauke Freer certainly doesn't disappoint, delivering a resolutely fine deep house moment across the A Side in "Cover Me". Swathes of Chicago loving pads punctuate the first half of a track driven by liquid drips of bass and hi-hats pimped with crispness. It's the glorious drop into silence that prefaces the arrival of highly pitched vocal, thumping 808 kicks and crazed key stabs that act as the most pleasant slap in the face you'll receive in 2010. Straying far from the deep house template, the title track "Stumbled Across" is delightfully schizophrenic attempt at beatdown, driven by a deliberately off key array of snares, hi-hats and claps. An equally stuttering approach to laying down synths and keys has a dizzyingly brilliant effect. Flipping the script further, the all too brief "Creeps" displays a talent for head nodding MPC choppage to a backdrop of ethereal chord patterns.

Callin Me (feat Voyce Lashae) (5:44)
Heels On (4:54)
Review: Although they've collaborated a lot over the last decade, the two tracks on this seven-inch single date back to Stefan Ringer and Chris Irvin's first joint studio session. Remarkably given their friendship and long working relationship, it's also the pair's first collaborative release. A-side 'Callin' Me', which features vocals written and performed by Voyce Lashae (real name Alicia Leshik) is particularly potent - a squelchy, deep, soulful and off-kilter chunk of broken beat/souful electrofunk fusion rich in jazz-funk synth sounds, undulating electronic bass and crunchy machine percussion. The pair's jazz-funk and P-funk influences are even more evident on flipside 'Heels On', a similarly soulful, house-style number that sits somewhere between Kaidi Tatham and Prince.

Waves Of Love (original disco version)
Waves Of Love (Deeper mix)
Review: Italian producer Isoul8 and Detroit bassist Paul Randolph (of Innerzone Orchestra fame) hook up on this rather lush 12" on Japanese imprint Especial. "Stay Stay Stay" is a tribute to Roy Ayers and Don Blackman, with soulful vocals floating over the top of languid, funky bass licks and mellow, twinkling keys. The flipside contains two versions of "Waves Of Love" - with the solid 4/4 thump of the disco version slightly shading it for our money. It was also a favourite in the record box of the late Aaron Carl, and as such the Especial crew have dedicated this release to the much loved producer.

Isoul8 - "Just The Way I Like It" (feat Diamondancer - 12" mix) (6:44)
June Jazzin - "Unfriendly Guests" (7:02)
Review: Now this is proper house music from the Noble Square label. Crate-digging veteran Volcon aka Isoul8 has linked with Diamond Dancer and enlisted the lush guitar of Piranahead to cook up a fantastically deep and effusive track that overflows with soul and spirituality, while the gentle vocals add another layer of cool. On the flip side, June Jazzin comes just as correct with a timeless broken beat track that glows thanks to the jazzy keys and bendy chords that light it up. Loungey yet heady, it's as good as it gets, frankly, and will swell your heart in two different but equally impactful ways.

Kid Sublime - "Wings Of Love" (feat Han Litz) (6:21)
Review: Set up as a continuation of their podcast back in 2008, this Russian label joins the dots between jazz various genres. Footwork House Jam no.1 is a homage to the global house culture and the eponymous Moscow-based club night in particular. The idea behind this compilation 'is to provide the fuel for house dance culture and house movement to expand further on' the label claims. Starting off on the A side with Baltimore legend Karizma and his jagged groove therapy session titled "Church Chords" there's more quality with Brit Nubian Mindz with the glitched out disco house of "Check Da Discotheque" which will contort you even more with its nifty beat repeat effects. On the flip is Intr0beatz with the sexy late night deep house of "That DUB" where he goes for that timeless formula of emotive chords, swing fuelled rhythms and sampled diva vocals to full effect.. but wait for that bassline to drop, like seriously! Finally, Dopeness Galore darling Jacob Otten aka Kid Sublime drops the soulful and life affirming broken beat nu-jazz experiment "Wings Of Love".

Review: Former Bugz In The Attic crewmember Alex Phountzi first joined forces with fellow broken beat pioneer IG Culture four years ago. Together, they launched the NameBrandSound project with a tidy EP of bass-weight business on Ninja Tune's Technicolour offshoot. Here the experienced twosome return with their first - and presumably only - missive of 2018. A-side "Shrunken Heads" is something of a percussive, off-kilter dancefloor beast, as the duo re-imagines Talking Heads classic "Once In A Lifetime" as a rolling, bruk-up floor-filler. Over on side B, "Bebop" sees them pepper another swinging, house-influenced bruk-up rhythm with lashings of synth-sax and some suitably shimmering chords.

Review: Oceanvs Orientalis and Ilhan Ersahin first entered each other's orbits by chance at a performance at Turkey's Cappadox Festival in 2018. Orientalis is renowned for his fusion of Eastern musical motifs and traditions with cutting-edge electronica, while Ilhan Ersahin has long plowed a unique path uniting assorted musical strains from around the world via an exploratory jazz-improv sensibility. Following two tracks ('Mesta' and 'Pire') co-written by Ilhan and OvO and released as collaborations, as well as two more Ersahin / OvO co-writes ('Revenge Of The Wankers' and 'Television') released under OvO's name alone, a fresh and exciting new song, '1980', now heralds a full-length collaboration slated to land in Spring 2024. The track's title hints at a certain nostalgic bent, all while still keeping its gaze firmly fixed on the future as it evokes sun-drenched, bygone good times. The 10" edition adds several extra versions, one of which spotlights the multi-instrumental mastery of Darkside's Dave Harrington, and the other the mesmerizing vocal stylings of Gaye Su Akyol.
