  4. One Out Of Two (Get A Room! remix)
Review: Ed Banger favourite and electro-synth-pop demi-god, Breakbot saw his "One Out Of Two" track remixed by a healthy squadron of electronic artist this year. First up it was Oliver, who painted a fascinating disco-not-disco portrait of the original. Sneak Dream went all ape shit on everyone, forming a solid and tenacious tech house groove with a thumping good kick! There's also the original of "Programe" included here, a summery pop track with subtle hints of electro; and finally, Get A Room plant a serious electro bomb, one that explodes and releases its ferocious synth on yo ass...!

  3. Glamouflage (Kuniyuki Takahashi Jungle remix) (8:50)
  4. Glamouflage (feat Colten Decker - Gary Martin Teknotika remix) (7:03)
Review: I Robots first unveiled the original version of "Glamouflage", a heavily percussive, occasionally tribal disco roller built around layered drums, psychedelic guitars and a rubbery bass guitar motif, back in 2016. Two years on, they've decided to give it a new lease of life via a swathe of fine new interpretations. I Robots handles the first remix himself, serving up a "Take II" version that's arguably even more percussive, stripped back and psychedelic. Our favourite of the new mixes comes from Kuniyuki Takayashi, who turns in a steamy dub disco interpretation smothered in mazy Moog solos and breathy chanted vocals, though Gary Martin's Teknotika rework featuring Colten Decker - a wickedly hypnotic mix of chugging techno rhythms, layered hand percussion and snaking sax solos - is also rather good.

Review: Slovenian space cadet Ichisan returns to the scene of the cosmic crime as he revisits select cuts from last year's superlative debut album Aperitiv. All equally velvet, "Hotel Jama" feels even more welcoming with its glistening strings, "Modri Tunel" is all about the deep dubby dynamics while "Kozmetika" while have you hot shoe shuffling quicker than you can say vibraphone. Finally "Terminal E" will fly you first class to wherever your head needs to be. Stunning, as always.

  1. Carnevale Da Buttare (4:22)
  2. Carnevale Da Buttare (Strumentale version) (6:59)
Review: By the time they released "Carnevale Da Buttare" in 1980, Italian combo Il Giardino dei Semplici were veritable veterans. While much of the band's earlier output took a very dewy-eyed, chanson-inspired approach to European pop, "Carnevale Da Buttare" was an altogether slicker, warmer proposition, with the band opting for a sound that sat somewhere between soft rock, blue-eyed soul and synth-pop. This reissue 12" - the first time the song has appeared on the format, allowing for a much louder cut - pairs the original vocal mix with a fantastic new instrumental rework by Naples-based producer Raffaele 'Whodamanny' Arcella, who's also the son of the group's keyboardist and founding member Andrea Arcella. His take makes a lot more use of the band's original synthesizers, adding some funky touches here and there to give the whole track a much more electrofunk flavour.

  1. ILO - "Everybody" (9:02)
  2. OOFT! - "Howard's Way" (7:09)
Review: Glasgow's Ooft! continues the FOTO-X series on his label with a sure shot 12" that presents two tracks sure to nestle their way into all manner of on-point record bags for many moons to come. First up is iLO who plays the long game with a yearning and burning slice of deep house that starts out stripped and subtle before blossoming into a fully-fledged vocal delight. Ooft! takes care of the B-side with a boogie-tasting get down entitled "Howard's Way" which will get heads nodding and bodies popping to a bassline that calls to mind Evelyn King's much loved "I'm In Love" low end destroyer.

  4. Vizitoz (Lizards remix) (5:52)
Review: The Not An Animal crew follows up excellent releases from Man Power, James Hadfield and Ian Blevins last year with this 12" of soaring 80s-inflected dancefloor boogie In:State & Giuli. It's actually a dreamy remix of "Vizitoz" from Lauer that opens up the 12" before the pulsing, wavey throb of the original kicks in. "Plus One" on the B side chops up the beat a little, but the same fulsome synth lines shape out the track. That leaves it to Lizards to wrap the record up with their own version of "Vizitoz", bringing a motorik thrum to the track that should nudge it into the bags of all manner of DJs from the cosmic warm-up crew to the EBM-favouring techno peak timers.

  1. Oh Mon Amour (6:04)
  2. Weekend Mouille (5:42)
  3. Ecoute Mon Coeur (5:40)
  4. Soul Ma Coco (5:49)
Review: Dr Love is a veteran tastemaker and vinyl junkie on the Montreal scene, while Laura Ingalls is a wandering French person of no specific sex that has recently landed in the French Canadian city. They both bonded over their love of anything disco and poutine: the main local dish which consists of potato, cheese curds and gravy. Dr Love likes to dig, but doesn't really produce while Laura Ingalls is not the most efficient digger and only seems to unearth old Folk and obscure Arabic music for their personal collection - but has serious production skills. On "Oh Mon Amour" they sample a very hard to find classic from the famous Parisian disco Le Palace in the early 80's: when it was released while "Weekend Mouille" is an odd jazz disco thing from the mid 70's. On the flip, "Soul Ma Coco" is said to be a cover of a certain Manu Dibango track. This version kept the melody and changed the lyrics slightly.

  1. Iron Curtis - "Daniel"
  2. Moomin - "I Whisper A Prayer"
  3. Jacques Bon - "Tribute To You"
  4. Rvds & Rau - "Umbe Data"
Review: The latest transmission from the luxuriant world of Smallville is a various artists collection that continues to weave elegiac tales via deep house means. Iron Curtis is up first with some plaintive acid in the form of "Daniel", which works pads and tender beats around the heartfelt squelch with grace. Moomin is a little more prominent in the beat department for "I Whisper A Prayer", while also feeding a hint of disco romance into a slow and simmering cut. Jacques Bon has his own acid tale to tell, and does so with a bigger nod to the jack but still keeping things respectable given the surroundings, leaving it to Rvds & Rau to happily float off on a buoyant throwdown in "Umbe Data", all positive chords and hopeful strings over a simple beat to show it's not all mournful in Hamburg.

  4. Marvin & Guy - "There's No Matter" (6:38)
Review: The latest joint on Mexican label Calypso brings together a whole host of talented operators tweaking out the traditional structures of house. Thomass Jackson is first up with the loose and freaky robo-disco roll of "Urzsula", a delightfully wild trip through clanging metal pings and wobbles strapped to a solid groove. Simple Symmetry and Inigo Vontier sound more direct with the stomping "Prayer To The Spiritual", although there's also a mystical charge in the track aimed at sending the dancefloor skywards. Facets gets low down and dirty with "Distant Chants" and Marvin & Guy cut up some serious funk for "There's No Matter", completing a set full of curveball club tracks to make heads turn.

  2. IMF Players - "Dub Again" (6:35)
Review: It's back to 1988 as Athens Of The North reissues the impossibly good "Back Together Again" from Jean & Trevor, a golden lovers rock classic that is actually a cover version of Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway's original. It's a gorgeously hazy cut with some pretty advanced-at-the-time synths and effects on top of an organic rhythm section and sliding guitar work. IMF Players then offer up "Dub Again" on the flip which delves deeper into dub science with equally compelling results.

  4. Inigo Vontier - "Makata" (4:35)
  5. Sano - "Bantu" (5:10)
Review: Thus far, Cult Edits has proved to be one of the most interesting and intriguing rework re-edits series around, with each 12-inch offering an impressive selection of cosmic, exotic and otherworldly reworks. Volume four continues on a similar theme. Manfredas kicks things off with the dirty ragga-house pressure of "Riddim", before Thomass Jackson has his way with a far-out tribal disco chugger on EP standout "Build The Bridge". Mid-'80s electronic Afro-chug is the order of the day on Balam's "Lentombi", while Inigo Vontier's "Makata" is percussive, heavily electronic, weird and undeniably druggy. In comparison, Sano's chant-along Afro-electro number "Bantu" is positively breezy.

Sometime GAMM and Whiskey Disco dons The Patchouli Brothers kick things off via the seductive, low-slung disco-funk goodness of "Where's Walter?" - a traditional style re-edit that proves that you don't need modern studio trickery to successfully re-imagine an old record - before sometime Situation man (and one half of Divine Situation) Paulo Fulci expertly rearranges a dusty chunk of rousing, horn-heavy dancefloor disco. Admin himself offers up the hot-to-trot, horn-sporting goodness of "Get Up & Do!", while Island Times draws things to a close with the hazy goodtime grooves of "Penney's Finest".

Leading the way on The Claudio Gentile Release is a Foolish Felix dub of Cage & Aviary's "Lean On Me" whose deranged acid gurglings provide a nice contrast to the thrusting Escape From East London stylings of Posthuman's "Make More Men". Review: Like many obscure Italo-disco acts, The Stupid Set largely went uncelebrated during their early '80s career. Here, Opilec boss I-Robots gives them a new lease of life via an album of his own edits of their previously unreleased Psychodisco set. It was originally recorded at the tail end of 1981 using an entirely analogue set-up, and subsequently performed live a number of times. This, though, is the first time it's seen an official release. I-Robots' edits are, naturally, fairly sympathetic to the original material, merely extended and snipping sections whilst leaving the band's analogue oddness in tact. Musically, it's impressive, too, sitting somewhere between curious new wave, early experimental electronica, the Horror soundtrack work of John Carpenter, and the raging throb of floor-friendly Italo-disco.

Review: Famed for their thrilling, dancefloor-friendly fusions of West African funk and disco, American electrofunk and post-punk pop, Ibibio Sound Machine is one of the most exciting and essential bands of recent times. It's for this reason that "Doko Mien", the Eno Williams fronted band's first album for two years, is so hotly anticipated. Happily, we can confirm that it's another stunning set, with Williams and company charging through a set of sizzling songs that wrap kaleidoscopic synths, rubbery bass, fiery horns and off-kilter funk-rock guitars around grooves that variously doff a cap to '80s electro, Italo-disco, jazz-funk, Tony Allen and thrusting, mind-altering mutant disco. In other words, it's another must-have collection of cuts from the London-based band.

Review: Jules Habib aka Inkswel touches down on Berlin's OYE label - the mythical shop's releasing wing - with an album of experimental soul and disco. In fact, we'd place this in the same category as many Stones Throw releases, meaning that it's pretty much genreless and absolutely sick. We start of with a heads-down, lighters out kinda jam with a slow tempo and a hip-hop vibe, and quickly move onto bumpier, synthier disco territories that simply make you wan to move. Across its nine tunes, we also hear shreds of the Detroit school of house, and the sort of cuts that Kyle Hall likes to pull out in his sets; all in all, it's just a great piece of dance music, and a diverse one at that!

Review: Odion Iruoje aka Sound President was one of Nigeria's top producers in the 1970s and early '80s, but his solo recording career was restricted to just the one release, Down To Earth. Originally released on Iruoje's own label, Odion Ltd, in 1983, it was only ever distributed in small quantities and Soundway Records have given this much needed re-issue. Iruoje is known for having signed the legendary Fela Kuti to major label EMI and acting as his producer throughout the early '70s. Starting out with the proto funk rap cut "Identify With Your Root (Which One You De?)", there's some killer West African boogie-funk-soulfulness on "Ikebe" and some feel good disco vibes; Lagos style on "Love Care".
