Too Late
Too Late (7")
Cat: BA 047V. Rel: 01 Apr 21
  1. Too Late (feat Stan Smith) (4:06)
  2. The People (feat Dave Aju) (3:55)
Review: This time last year, Aussie beat-maker and synth-funk revivalist Inkswel made his first appearance on Kraak & Smaak's Boogie Angst imprint with the digital-only The People EP. That featured two superb original cuts, both of which you can find - albeit in 45-friendly edit form - on this must-check single. 'Too Late' is a fine chunk of lo-fi electro/freestyle revivalism featuring synths aplenty and tidy vocals by Stan Smith, and arguably amongst Inkswel's greatest cuts to date. Arguably even better is Dave Aju hook-up 'The People', which sees Inkswel take lo-fi soul and P-funk towards the dancefloor with devastating effect. Boogie lovers and synth-heads take note!

Pleasure Centre Remixed Vol 2
Cat: BA 074V. Rel: 25 Feb 21
  1. Twilight (feat Izo Fitzroy - Aeroplane remix) (5:33)
  2. In Plain Sight (feat IVAR - Rodney Hunter extended remix) (6:44)
  3. Echo Park (Fatnotronic & Emmo remix) (5:23)
  4. Same Blood (feat The Palms - Prins Thomas Diskomiks) (7:27)
  5. Naked (feat IVAR & Berenice Van Leer - Fouk remix) (4:50)
  6. Sommeron (feat Imugi - Satin Jackets remix) (4:12)
Review: There's plenty to get the blood pumping on this second set of remixes of tracks from Kraak & Smaak's most recently album, the colourful, electrofunk-influenced Pleasure Centre. For proof, check out Aeroplane's slick, cheery and ear-catching take on 'Twilihght' (think Balaeric nu-disco meets proto-house), Prins Thomas's devilishly acid-fired, Moroder-inspired Diskomiks of 'Same Blood' (the EP's standout moment for us), and the sample-heavy, soul-flecked deep house revision of 'Naked' from sometime Heist Recordings regular 'Fouk'. Other highlights include Satin Jackets' pleasingly summery rework of 'Sommeron' and the low-slung, percussion-rich vibe that marks out Fatnotronic and Emmo's remix of 'Echo Park'.

Boogie Beats Vol 2
Cat: BA 065V. Rel: 29 Oct 20
  1. Titeknots - "On My Mind" (4:59)
  2. Adeline - "After Midnight" (Kraak & Smaak extended remix) (6:10)
  3. Get To Know - "Love Taught Me" (6:54)
  4. Scruscru - "S For Sexy Edit" (4:59)
Review: Well over a year has passed since Kraak & Smaak's Boogie Angst label delivered the first Boogie Beats EP, a multi-artist affair designed to allow artists from around the world the chance to, "present and extrapolate their definition of a funky groove". This belated follow-up is packed with genuine musical heat, from the weighty dub disco excitement of Brighton artist Tieknots' stripped-back and heavy 'On My Mind' and the bruk-up gospel soul grooves of Get To Know's 'Love Taught Me', and the celebratory rush of Scruscru's 'S For Sexy Edit', a deliciously accessible and addictive rework of a little-known 1970s disco cut. Perhaps best of all, though, is Kraak & Smaak's ultra-funk and pleasingly deep revision of Escort singer Adeline's solo cut 'After Midnight'.
