  1. Time Trekker
  2. Pretty Noise Suite No 1
Review: Two of Chicago's most underappreciated producers pop up on this splendid record. The cowbell carnage of A-Side "Time Trekker" is offset by the string-laden, piano heavy house thump of "Pretty Noise Suite No. 1" - a guaranteed floor filler if ever we've heard one. Pressed up DIY style on Nicholson's Circular Motion Recordings, this is one for the purists.

  2. Storm Raiders (Tribute To Larry Heard)
  3. HardTymes
Review: Trawl through Glenn Underground's vast discography and you'll frequently come across sought-after gems ripe for the reissue treatment. That appears to be what Italian reissue specialists Groove Records has done. GU Archives first appeared back in 2000, and bundled two hard-to-find tracks from the acclaimed Love & Hurt triple-album with the (then) previously unreleased "HardTymes" (a particularly breezy, jazzy, sun-kissed and musically rich chunk of bossa-house blessed with some particularly special vibraphone style solos). 18 years on, the EP has lost none of its sparkle, with the "Elle"-goes-Chicago deep warmth of "Stringing Me" and impeccably spacey and shimmering "Storm Raiders (Tribute to Larry Heard)" standing out. Simply essential.

Moog Vibrations (reissue) (heavyweight vinyl 12")

  1. Moog Vibrations (10:56)
  2. Urban Flight To Atiner (8:00)
Review: The latest Glenn Underground record to get the reissue treatment could hardly be described as one of his best known. Originally, this double A-side excursion slipped out as a white label, promo-only affair way back in 2010, and has since become sought after amongst deep house collectors. It's easy to see why the original is such an in demand record, though; the 11-minute A-side "Moog Vibrations", in which the Chicago veteran jams with his Moog over a typically warm and loose deep house groove, is little less than superb. Flipside "Urban Flight To Atiner 7", a cosmic deep house excursion peppered with guitar style solos, stretched-out organ chords and bustling acid lines, is almost as good.

  1. Acid Jazz (6:30)
  2. Acid Dub (5:53)
Review: With a title such as 808 Sessions, you'd expect this latest missive from reliable Chicago veteran Glenn Underground to be built around the weighty analogue beats of Roland's classic TR-808 drum machine. While that's the case, it's actually his use of TB-303 "acid" lines that catches the ear. They come to the forefront on A-side "Acid Jazz", where wiggly motifs, cascading melody lines and reverb-laden Rhodes chords ride a hybrid deep house/beatbox electro groove. It's superb, all told, though the stripped back "Acid Dubbb" B-side - a raw, TB-303 heavy interpretation of the A-side shorn of GU's usual deep house niceties - is arguably even better.

  2. I-94 (Tech Not dub)
Review: Windimoto Music founder Sean Haley has never been a prolific producer; in fact, this fine hook-up with fellow Chicagoan veteran Glenn Underground is his first release for the best part of five years. As you'd expect from two experienced Windy Citytalents, "I-94" is rather good. While underpinned by a relentless kick and snare pattern, the rhythm track boasts tons of swing, while jammed-out organ motifs and electric piano flourishes recall the jazz-funk influenced productions of Dego and Kaidi Tatham. On the flip you'll find the "Tech-Not Dub" of the same track, a stripped-back but equally funk-fuelled alternative take that includes bolder bass and seriously fizzing synthesizer action.
