Review: Together Melbourne pair Amin Payne and Sean Deans form APSD, and they debut in quite impressive form with this Digital Dust album for Hot Shot Sounds. Inkswel and Benny Badge's label has developed into the prime source for what they call "drum machine soul music" and APSD are a perfect fit. Some 11 tracks deep, Digital Dust features contributions from the voice of Fat Freddy's Drop himself, Joe Dukie, as well as Miles Bonny, Cazeaux OSLO, Silent Jay and more. Yet it's Deans and Payne's innate mastery of a glistening brand of funk across various tempos which shines through on this album.

Review: The tireless Venetian disco machine Bottin is at the controls for the fourth Discofil release, presenting a mini LP of proto Italo oddities from his enviable vinyl archives that stretch as far back as his childhood. Naturally all six tracks here are expertly tweaked for maximum dancefloor explosion potential! The whole facet of disco tinged Italo craziness is represented here, with explosive uptempo numbers covered in the opening two tracks "Adriano" and "Flipper" which, despite both being crazy good, are somehow how overshadowed by the low slung sesame street funk of "Stefania". On the flip "Oscar" marries a gliding liquid disco funk melody with a chanting proto house bump whilst "Patrizia" is budget Moroder arpeggio drama at its finest.

Review: Given their respective careers, you'd expect this surprise debut album from Balearic nu-disco specialist James Bright and Groove Armada member Tom Findlay to be rather good - or at least sonically attractive with good grooves and quality musicianship. It is, of course, with the pair opting for a glossy, 80s-influenced synth sound, bubbly electronic grooves, sun-splashed Balearic pop intent and authentically executed nods to West Coast electrofunk and nu-disco pioneers Metro Area. Our picks of a very strong bunch include the synth-fired blue-eyed soul of 'Slow Dance', the sunset-ready gorgeousness of 'Flowers', the low-slung, late-night AM radio vibes of 'It's Only Rain' and the Morgan Geist-esque 'NY Disco (Smile)'.

Review: Athens of the North originally contracted obscure 80s boogie artist Billy Bruner about reissuing two of his rare, sought-after singles - "The Tulsa Song" and "The Dream" - but instead raided his tape archives and putting together what's effectively his debut album. Combining previously released tracks (including some made as part of similarly obscure outfit T'Spoon and the gospel-leaning band The Davis Family), unheard extended versions and previously unreleased songs, the album is warm, soulful, slick and summery. Highlights include the stuttering P-funk flex of "Cats Meow", the sizzling dancefloor heat of "School Dance" and the deliciously extended version of glassy-eyed '80s soul jam "Never". Review: Deep Space Orchestra's Use of Weapons label has always been a reliable source of analogue-heavy left of centre deep house, with each split EP, featuring tracks from a variety of like-minded producers, featuring a range of must-have nuggets. This expansive sixth release, with eight tracks spread across two slabs of wax, is no different. DSO's beautiful and surprisingly fragile "Mendoza" leads the way, with 7 Citizens calming, alien house groover "Fatum" close behind. Arguably best of all, though, is Other Worlds' "Coldname ELD", a sparse and bassy concoction blessed with some brilliant, Head High style pianos. It is, though, all good, with further impressive contributions from the Detroit-included Haku.

Review: Hip hop, house and r&b music are intrinsically linked. More than most forms of music, contemporary black recordings possess the ability to borrow, looking back at what has gone before. As a result today's artists, producers and remixers consistently draw inspiration from classic, often obscure, soul, jazz, funk and disco tracks, and subsequently the pioneers of these genres are, arguably, directly responsible for many of today's biggest dance floor cuts. Therefore, this collection is dedicated to the rare grooves and classics that in many cases have survived their creators and the labels that first brought them to our attention. This first edition of Defected's new Deep Down & Discofied series contains a small selection of some of the many tracks that have inspired its curator, label boss Simon Dunmore, through the years, records that touched his soul at various points on his journey through clubland. A few of the choices are pure indulgence but most of the inclusions are now part of dancefloor history and, more importantly, they are now the inspiration for many a classic hip hop, house or r&b anthem, either as a straight cover version or as a sampled, twisted groove revitalised for a brand new audience. Joining the dots between old and new flavours brings together records from Jenny Burton (whose 'Bad Habit' was used so effectively in Defected's own ATFC single), Salsoul Orchestra (another heavily sampled classic in 'Take Some Time Out For Love'), Teddy Pendergrass (think DJ Sneak's Chicago House classic 'You Can't Hide From Your Bud') and the prototype for Stardust's 'Music Sounds Better With You' from Chaka Khan alongside newly created disco infused songs from Martin Solveig and Ron Hall & The MuthaFunkaz. A clear indication that the musical power of the past is still shaping the sounds of the future. The first 'Deep Down & Discofied' album comes available on double CD and three double vinyl LPs, bringing the selected tunes to DJs, collectors and those wanting to delve a little deeper inside contemporary electronic music.

Review: A veritable French fusion institution; classically trained Cameroon musician Eko Roosevelt Louis was responsible for a catalogue of exciting jazz funk, disco and afrofunk records throughout the 70s and remained active touring Europe until the 90s when he returned to Cameroon to inherit the role as tribal chieftain from his grandfather. Released in 1979, Funky Disco Music was his third album and packs some of his most powerful compositions. The triumphant title track says it all; laidback, charming and full of positivity it sets the scene for the whole trip. Highlights include the rock-tinged soul chugger "Une Chanson Sans Paroles", the highlife uplift of "Doi Da Manga" and the smouldering showstopper finale "Emen Ango". Dig deep and enjoy... Africa Seven promise more Eko reissues in the near future.

Review: And now for something a bit different as Clone welcome Rotterdam based oddball disco duo Elitechnique back into the Loft Supreme fold for a third release. Markedly more ambitious in scale than Elitetechnique's previous output, Intrusion contains eight tracks supposedly crafted from live instrumentation, recorded and arranged by the duo of Remco de Jong and Florentijn Boddendijk over the course of a year. Intrusion has the duo explicitly indulge their passion of electronic obscurities and 60s & 70s soundtracks for the first time and the results are excellent. From the luxurious orchestral strains that drive forward the opening imaginary cop drama theme "Grand Escape" it's clear Elitetechnique's had fun making this album, whilst there are some genuinely worthy Kudos to Clone for this excellent release!

Review: Brothers Simon and Robin Lee have long excelled at the album format, delivering occasional sets that ripple with impressive musicality, sinewy strings, cozy downtempo moods and upbeat dancefloor moments. Body of One, their fourth full length (their first dropped on Nuphonic back in 1997), continues this trend, offering a compelling trip through the pair's myriad influences. After opening with a sweaty post-punk thumper ("Prisoner of Your Love"), we're variously treated to Italo-influenced vintage house ("Magic Touch"), rubbery disco-funk ("Freak For Your Love"), Arthur Russell-influenced tropical downtempo pop ("Caruso's Monkey House"), dreamy Balearica ("Floating World") and string-laden gorgeousness. As for the title track, it sounds like So-era Peter Gabriel.
