  4. DJ Overdose - "Potje Freaken" (4:55)
Review: The Go Finger label has been digging into the undergrowth of synthwave sounds and deviant electro for a few years now, more recently graduating from the tape scene to put out EPs of leftfield electronic adventures on wax. This EP in particular is quite something, calling on the vintage talents of Das Ding in all their eerie, warped, pulsing, analogue refinement. "Conun Drum" is a curiously playful trip through noirish cityscapes by way of strobing lead lines and militaristic machine beats, while "Life Is A Tool In The Hands Of Strangers" takes a more uptempo approach without losing the bombast of their melodic arrangements. Dutch electro champ DJ Overdose steps up for the B side, dropping the overcast and creeping "I See No Stars At Night" and the dishevelled robot beatdown "Potje Freaken".

Review: Rotterdam's prolific DJ Overdose is a fine fit for LIEs with his knackered aesthetic and rugged electro sound. His first album for the label is another masterclass from the venerated veteran across 13 atmospheric tracks of rhythmic invention. There are plenty of classic tropes as well as a wealth of fresh new thinking here with cosmic trips like 'This World' and more rugged workouts like '3000' sitting next to icy cowbell pings on 'Razor' ass wiggling delights such as 'What Do I Know.' The West Coast has long been a leading light in electro, and that is proven to still be the case here.

Electro
  1. Feeding The Fad (4:51)
  2. Hip To The Hype (4:38)
  3. Probably Too Commercial (7:13)
Review: Label-hopping Dutchman DJ Overdose can usually be relied upon to bring the goods. Happily, he's in fine form on this first solo Unknown to the Unknown appearance since 2015's fantastic Housejam Freaker. Wisely, he's decided to steer clear of well-worn retro-futurist cliches (jungle breaks, hardcore revivalism and so on), instead delivering a trio of raw cuts that blend elements of electro, 1990 style European techno and blistering acid house. Flipside "Probably Too Commercial", a rough-and-ready dose of distorted, high octane electro smothered in alien electronics, is probably the pick of the bunch, though sweaty, stab-tastic opener "Feeding The Fad" - all razor-sharp electronic riffs, wayward drum machine beats and old school vocal samples - also impresses.

  9. Locked Groove 5 (0:13)
Review: Fresh from impressing via releases on L.I.E.S and Viewlexx, DJ Overdose heads over to Unknown To The Unknown for a spot of techno-jackin'. Thrillingly, "Housejam Freaker" combines fizzing, upbeat machine drum rhythms, deep space chords and wild, sped-up Motor City electronics to create something that sounds like the bastard offspring of Jeff Mills, Drexciya and Phuture. Willie Burns provides the obligatory remix, offering something that retains the original's energy whilst increasing the beauty factor tenfold. Elsewhere, he wanders into deep acid territory on the straight-up jacker "Dikzak", and delivers a surprisingly funky dose of intergalactic electro on the cheery "Vinca". A string of handy locked grooves complete a tasty package.

  4. DJ Overdose - "010-070" (4:27)
  5. Interviews - "Reasonating" (6:03)
  6. Varum - "Crackmeyer" (4:32)
Review: Leipzig label Hypress has gone compilation crazy of late, with this six-track effort being the imprint's third multi-artist excursion of recent times. We're not complaining though, because the Reso EP boasts some seriously sturdy, mind-altering electro fare. For proof, check the buzzing, acid-electro intensity of DJ Problems', 'Calculate', the lo-fi, industrial-electro sleaziness of Swam Intelligence's 'Ketter', and the punchy-cut-spacey electro classicisms of 'Resonating' by Interviews. The EP also includes some more balanced, melodious and picturesque fare, including a superbly positive excursion from Varum (the psychedelic electronics and blissful lead lines of 'Crackmeyer') and a typically high-grade workout from DJ Overdose (the bubbly bass, swirling synths and bustling drums of '010-070').
