  1. The Break Up
  2. The Make Up
Review: After a break through 2012 with EPs on Dirt Crew, Murmur and Freerange, Detroit Swindle take a second bite out of their 2013 cherry with the Break Up to Make Up EP on new label Heist. The A-side is "The Break Up", a sidechaning rollercoaster of sampled, looped and filtered vocals that bounce of bit-staccato Rhodes, silky hats and tight drums. On the B-side is a deeper "The Break Up" featuring breathy, feminine vocals similar to Australian and Third Strike act The Tortoise. Deep and flowing house music for the dancefloor.

Review: First announced over 15 months ago, Firecracker finally come through with You've Never Been To Konotop (Selected Works 2009-2012) a rather finely presented collection of tracks from the self styled 'Slavic Spiritual Warrior" Vakula. The main recording alias of Ukrainian Mikhaylo Vityk, Vakula first emerged in 2009 with a succession of singular deep house explorations for respected hubs such as Dekmantel, Ethereal Sounds, 3rd Strike and Firecracker offshoot Shevchenko an as the extended title suggests this twelve track LP focuses on unreleased material from this same period. Musically, the tone mirrors Vityk's material for Shevchenko, taking the mainframe of house and melding it with elements of "Ukrainian folk melodies, esoteric cryptic rhythm patterns, field recordings, interludes and overgrown organic effects hidden beneath acres of cosmic murk." Let's take a moment to appreciate the rather unique double gatefold sleeve with hand-drawn, silk screened artwork too.

  2. Marcellus Pittman - "In Due Time" (Ricardo Miranda remix)
Review: The Rick Wilhite Presents: Vibes New and Rare Series from 2010 gets revisited in this prime remix offering from Rush Hour. The lead track sees Wilhite's "Analog Love" getting a driving chord-driven rework from Andres, who delivers another one of his stone cold killers filled with the sort of deeply affecting melodies that make his productions so vital. On the flip, Marcellus Pittman's "In Due Time" gets a rework from Ricardo Miranda that transforms it with '80s boogie textures that offer a different kind of depth.

  2. FlyLOVE (original mix)
Review: "Flylove" is a prominent highlight of Lovelife Is A Challenge, the digital only LP Oakland singer songwriter Chris Turner released last year; produced in conjunction with Phantom Lover, the track came off like Fly Lo dipping his toes in jazz and deep house at the same time. Rebirth have licensed the album for a remastered full vinyl release and "Flylove" makes for perfect single material and look the label have only gone and commissioned the master of Detroit Dust Andres to remix the track. The results are dipped in the same kind of tape worn warmth that characterised his ubiquitous New For U plate last year and is already a firm favourite of Gilles and MCDE.

Review: Kai Alce's first release of 2013 - only his second in two years - comes via his own NDATL imprint. Naturally the EP draws inspirations from the cities the label is named after: New York-Detroit-Atlanta. With tinges of dub, the A-side is reminiscent to the looping deep house of Norm Talley's music on Pariter, while the scrappy hats, popping snares and all-round rough fidelity of "Rabbit's Hole" rank up with the productions of Delroy Edwards on New York label L.I.E.S. Alce then brings some of his own home spun Atlanta funk to the EP with the title track "World Causes".

Review: Hong Kong native Steven Tang might just win the award for most overdue debut album, but Disconnect To Connect proves it's been worth the wait! Emerging as a producer in the late nineties, Tang's considered take on the deeper strains of house music under his given name and the Obsolete Music Technology and Misguided aliases have graced revered hubs such as Syncrophone, Keith Worthy's Aesthetic Audio and the Dolly label run by Steffi, as well as his own Emphasis Recordings. To this list Tang adds Hamburg's Smallville operation with the nine track Disconnect To Connect revealing itself to be less an album in the traditional 'journey' sense and more a sublime testament to the productions skills he's been honing over his under rated career thus far.

Review: Stefano "Ksoul" Boati and Paolo "MuteOscillator" Giangrasso join the Dekmantel fray having previously issued their brand of dusty, degraded house - a severely neglected Marcellus Pittman perhaps - through Aroy Dee's MOS Recordings, Azuri and their own Kinda Soul Recordings. Their style remains very much in evidence on the three track Soul Hell 12?, with the title track standing out thanks to its wonderfully insouciant blend of tough kick drums, molten synth lines and playful key patterns that demonstrate Boati and Giangrosso's musicality. "Stinger" meanwhile is a deeper excursion characterized by its bassline squelch and subdued Detroit chords, while "Detrance" sees them indulge their experimental side, with a combination of stumbling beats and loose electronic textures that recalls the similarly abstracted house of labelmates Juju & Jordash. More essential wares from Dekmantel...

Review: There's something rather special about "Mys", the latest missive from occasional Local Talk type Johan Cederberg. It's certainly unusual, with Cederberg brilliantly wrapping a soft-centred, floor-friendly deep house groove around Beach Boys-do-gospel style vocal harmonizing. It's unlike anything else we've heard, which given the ubiquity of ponderous deep house at present, is no bad thing. Young Marco provides a sterling remix, too, delivering a skittering, analogue-heavy version that retains the original's touchy-feely air whilst taking it in an entirely different direction. Virtual flipside "Kela" is similar to his previous work for Local Talk (think US garage influenced deep house), while Shakari & Straneous deliver a deeper, woozier rework.

Review: Operating out of the OYE record shop in Berlin, the Box Aus Holz crew are hitting their eighth release with an amassing amount of interest behind them. Earlier editions are shifting for decent amounts second hand, so move quick if you want a slice of the action. Beyond the hype the music stands tall, with the collective of relatively unknown producers displaying a bright spark of creativity across soul-derived house and beats. There is certainly plenty of illustrious sampling going on, from the wistful chops of Max Graef's "KSF", while The Ivory Boy throws it down with some weighty funk of the most addictive kind. With not a duff beat in sight, this really is an essential purchase.

Review: Not content with two conceptual sub labels to keep themselves occupied inbetween releases on main operation Don't Be Afraid, Semtek and co launch another theme specific offshoot in the shape of DBA Special Editions. Described as "a series of classic dancefloor cuts from the most sought after producers on the underground house circuit" the Special Editions label has been primed as an outlet for label boss Semtek to release dancefloor specific one-off 12?s from artists not so closely tied to the DBA roster and the upcoming debut release from Disco Nihilist sets a high standard. Four tracks deep, Journey To The End Of The Night sees the Maine-based producer continue to plunder his raw take on house music made using analogue sequencers and hardware, all recorded straight to tape with the slightly deranged jackbeat of "Midnight To St. John" a particular highlight.

Review: Ahead of a long delayed and keenly awaited new long player for the Firecracker label, Vakula returns to the Banduru imprint that he inaugurated in anonymous fashion for more of his well measured descents into East European house mysticism. Much like everything the Ukrainian touches, the devil is in the details and this four track 12" is notable for the prominent lo-fi fuzz that coats the execution. This murky approach is apparent from the start of lead track "D The Man" with the familiar warm textures blurred by the thick fuzz that occupies the edges of the production which ends on a wonderful piano solo. Complementing this, "Evening Breeze" pairs rasping deep house in the mould of vintage Mahogani with this gauzy approach, whilst "Fifth Experiment" probably gave the mastering engineer heart palpitations.

Review: RSI is a new label affiliated to the Tusk Wax empire, and for their first release they look to the unexpected choice of the Posthuman duo of Rich Bevan and Josh Doherty. "Hecatism" sees the pair wander into deeper corners than their music is usually known for, trading electro breakbeats for a mid tempo production filled with resonant textures and vocal chunks that could nominally be described as house, while "Helioshock" sees them break out the 303 for some heady acid grooves. The remixes of the title track come expertly chosen also, with Disco Bloodbath resident Damon Martin taking the track even deeper into something approaching Balearic groove, and PORK INTL, who adds a distinctly more interstellar flavour to the original with its Danny Wolfers-style analogue house chords.

Review: The excellent Autonomous Africa series returns for a second release sporting cuts from label founder JD Twitch and the like minded Auntie Flo and Midland. Launched last year, the series intends to highlight the problems that outside interference from other countries has on African countries and their people with all the proceeds from each EP donated to a different charity in Africa. The inaugural EP raised funds for Medecins Sans Frontieres operations in Africa, while this year's EP will raise funds for the Mtandika Mission in Tanzania. Midland offers some of his best work to date with the thumping, scratchy 4/4 of original production "Checkbob" which is matched by JD Twitch's "Olaiya" which adds a devilish sub bassline to the jittery JBs style funk of the uncredited source. On the flip Auntie Flo is in more contemplative mood with "Water Of Life" whilst Twitch's second edit "Juju" is a percussive delight.

There's just something about the drums that come kicking in that grabs your attention amidst the current deluge of cookie cutter deepness, and the eventual drop into the bassline is sublime. Switch down to 33 on the flip and the first of two more untitled cuts is equally unabashed in its intentions as a DJ tool, pairing crisp hi hats with thick bass drums and fidgeting stabs whilst the second cut begins in a swampier place and highlights Italojohnson's capacity to tease out a vocal sample.

Tapping into perhaps the most spaced out and mellow of all the O'Sullivan material, jams such as the delicate "Inside Out" ooze sophistication and simplicity that evades producers aiming for the same immersive tone in these times. With some previously unreleased wares, faithful remastering and well-aimed edits, there is no way any fan of deep 4/4 music could turn their nose up at such an immaculate selection.

Review: These days, there's nothing particularly unusual about record labels pressing records in limited quantities, with sublime, screen-printed artwork. That certainly wasn't the case back in 2004, when Scottish soulsters Firecracker Recordings put out their first lovingly produced 10" EP. Now firmly established as a go-to imprint for those interested in joining the dots between deep house, soul, jazz and disco, the Firecracker crew were undoubtedly trailblazers. Here, they revisit their early recordings (2004-2009), offering them up on CD for the first time. There's much to enjoy, from the woozy jazz of Linkwood Family's "Miles Away", and the Marvin Gaye-sampling Fudge Fingas' classic "Gettin' Together", to the Moodymann-ish Linkwood jam "What's Up With the Underground", and Fudge Fingas' effortlessly soulful "Situation Diminished".

Then we read the press release and found out that it actually was made in the good old days (1990) and has been saved from dusty oblivion by Gerd Janson's perennialy on point Running Back. It's a spectacular release, full of nasty primal rhythms and cheap synth lines that remind us of sweaty illicit clubs where parties would last for days. "Back Life" just wins out as our favourite and even the contemporary Tuff City Kids edit is a blinding body jam too.

The first two tracks see the duo at their most urgent, with the relentless stomp and thick, modulating bass of "Body Flicker" and flickering morse code-style pulse of "Fan Nation" amongst their most devastating for the dance floor, while "Outer Path" takes their trademark methodical approach, with a mid tempo groove that slowly finds itself unfurling into a treacle-thick combination of acid textures and dub chords.

Review: Austrian label Pusic present their second release, featuring four finely crafted boogie house cuts that stand out amongst the current ocean of 90s influenced cuts. Andy Hart & Max Graef kick off with "Gefleckte Gauklerblume", a mid-tempo house cut filled with billowing chords and tough, brushed percussion and a generous helping of soul, while Mazzomba's "Untitled 1" pairs metronomic house beats with a gently swelling chord sequence. However, it's "You Make Me Change of Heart" from veteran Dutch producer Awanto3 that stands out, with weighty, sonorous keys that slowly unfold into some elegiac 70s vocals - the remix from Roman Rauch is similarly great, snipping the vocals up and taking it into peak-time territory.

If you've checked Leonid's prior output for Sistrum and Photic Fields you'll know Dubliner Paul Smith uses the project to draw on a sound that is warm, subtle and contains faint echoes of Motor City Soul and this much is very evident on the Radar EP. Perhaps less suited to the peak time than some of Dolly's recent issues, the three tracks here will instead appeal to those looking to set the mood and Smith's inherent musicality and understanding of his craft really shines through, especially on the slow burning, glowering brilliance of B Side track "Fall Out".
