The Life Behind Things EP
The Life Behind Things EP (limited heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: HEIST 041. Rel: 30 Oct 19
Deep House
  1. The Life Behind Things (7:02)
  2. Music For Clubs (feat Lorenz Rhode) (6:30)
  3. The Life Behind Things (Isoul8 remix) (7:03)
Review: Dutch duo Detroit Swindle returns to home label Heist for the first time since the release of last year's superb sophomore album "High Life". Title track "The Life Behind Things" is positive, ear-pleasing and dancefloor friendly, with the experienced pair peppering bouncy beats and thickset synth bass with joyous organ riffs, wobbly acid lines, jaunty piano stabs and female vocal snippets that sound like they were lifted from an old school house cut. Lorenz Rhode hook-up "Music For Clubs" is arguably even more rush-inducing in its retro-futurist piano house intent, while Isoul8's remix of the title track is a swirling, soulful and decidedly tactile chunk of deep house brilliance.

Review: If your fame is built on delivering rock solid dancefloor cuts, should your subsequent albums stick to the same approach or mix it up a little? It's a conundrum that many artists have struggled with over the years. Smartly, Detroit Swindle has decided to hedge their bets with High Life following 2014's Boxed Out. As full length albums go, it's a bit of a peach, and sees the acclaimed Dutch duo flit between sensuous, home-listening fare, jaunty, instrumental-laden workouts (see the cheery, smoky pop-soul of Tom Misch hook-up "Yes, No, Maybe" and Afro-fired bounce of "Call of the Wild" featuring fellow Dutch combo Jungle By Night) and tried-and-tasty club tracks (Seven Davis Jr collaboration "Flavourism", the driving disco-house of "Freeqy Polly" and "Cut U Loose").

  1. Coffee In The Morning (5:44)
  2. Move Out The Way (8:25)
  3. Coffee In The Morning (Prins Thomas Diskomiks) (10:29)
  4. Coffee In The Morning (dub mix) (6:23)
Review: Here's something to give your day the kick-start it needs: a caffeine-rich collaboration between Detroit Swindle and sometime Tartelet artist Jitwam. In its original form, "Coffee in the Morning" is funky and addictive, with ear-catching lead vocals riding a chunky groove rich in warm Rhodes chords, disco-style bass, bustling house drums, layered hand percussion and snaking sax motifs. It comes accompanied by two flipside revisions - a deliciously rubbery, all-action "Diskomiks" from Prins Thomas that's arguably even better than the original version, as well as a driving Dub Mix that contains a stunningly saucer-eyed breakdown - as well as a jaunty, synth-heavy classic house style bonus cut ("Move Out of the Way"). In a word: essential.
