Review: The combined talents of pianist-producer Alfa Mist and jazz drummer Richard Spaven have spelt the formation of a new hip-hop act, 44th Move, whose debut album for Black Acre debuts today. Centring on the notion of an "R&D mindstate", the pair bring a tonally lowered, electronicised sound to the table, teaming up with two further confidants - Bristol turntablist Awkward and Detroit rapper Quelle Chris - for an extended jaunt through techno, r&b and rap, arrayed in overarching drapes of moody jazz.

Review: Originally formed in 1980 in Reno, Nevada, 7 Seconds are often credited as one of the most vital and criminally overlooked pioneering hardcore punk acts. Following on from their much-adored 1985 EP-cum-LP Walk Together, Rock Together, their 1986 follow up New Wind featured slower tempos and a notable imbuing of melody, with the project going on to be credited as an integral blueprint for the hardcore scene's eventual embracing and transition into pop-punk and indie rock. This long overdue reissue from Trust Records arrives complete with the complimentary Change In My Head, which is a totally new take on the classic album featuring tracks remixed in their entirety by Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi) alongside Inner Ear Studios' Don Zientara. Restoring and reimagining unreleased cuts from the original LP such as 'Change In My Head' and 'Compro', these bonus tracks offer a fresh snapshot of 7 Seconds in transition, but still very much firmly rooted in their hardcore ethos (before literal U2 comparisons would arise with later output). This limited double LP also comes with a 24-page oral history featuring unseen photographs, flyers, and memorabilia.

Review: Los Angeles based self-described "ecstatic black metal" outfit Agriculture are slowly becoming one the most talked about acts in the extreme metal underground, with near hysteric levels of hype growing for their self-titled debut full-length. Signing to The Flenser, a label known for its championing of the leftfield extremity of artists such as Chat Pile and Mamaleek, it's no real surprise that so many in the scene are gravitating toward the group's euphoric and uplifting re-interpretation of black metal motifs. With tremolo picking, blast beats and howling vocal shrieks all angled in such a sonic manner to feel enveloping and warm as opposed to the traditional frosted machinations of the genre, as well as the vulnerable poetics on display, Agriculture make a strong case for the Venn Diagram intersections which can often occur between the realms of black metal, screamo and post-rock, but they do so in such a nuanced manner as for it to feel blissfully cohesive and utterly natural.

Review: Originally unveiled on 22nd September 2014 on the Infectious imprint, Alt-J's difficult second album certainly proved their worth at the time. Hitting the top spot in the UK album charts, alongside number two spots in Belgium, Australia and Canada, even managing to break the top five in the United States. The holy grail of impending global stardom for British guitar acts.

All of which went at least some way to bagging the outfit a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. Skip forward eight years and how fitting is that label now? Well, it's still the triumph it always was, spanning folktronica, pop, indie and art rock in a way that's likely never going to sound by numbers in any way. A great example of exactly why this band deserve every bit of the recognition they now command.

Review: On Club Tounsi, Tunisian producer Sofyann Ben Youssef, aka AMMAR 808, brings the raw rhythmic power of Mezoued-the folk music of Tunisia's working class-into a bold electronic future. Fusing pulsating synths, distorted textures and TR-808 beats with traditional instruments like goatskin bagpipes, hand drums, and the ney, he reimagines iconic Mezoued tunes for a new generation. Vocalists from classical, Sufi and Mezoued backgrounds also feature to add human soul and mean the album captures the genre's emotional depth while transforming it into something cinematic and club-ready. This LP is a bridge between past and future, tradition and innovation and one that makes you want to move.

Review: Deko reconsecrate Angel's debut LP on the band's formative 50th anniversary, coinciding with a fresh wave of tour dates from the theatrically inclined glam-prog rockers. Originally signed to Casablanca after being spotted by then-A&R Gene Simmons, the Washington, DC band's first album leaned heavily into lengthy, keyboard-drenched pomp, a sound more progressive than the tighter glam stylings that followed on On Earth As It Is In Heaven and Sinful. The lineup at the time included Frank DiMino, Punky Meadows, Gregg Giuffria, Mickie Jones and Barry Brandt, building stage staples like 'Tower'. On this limited blue-black swirl vinyl edition, we've liner notes from journalist Dave Reynolds and a small selection of bundles signed by the four surviving original members.

Review: This sixth studio album by Arcade Fire is as anticipated as any in the seminal indie band's long career. It was produced by esteemed Radiohead associate Nigel Godrich in many different locations around the world from El Paso to New Orleans. The band say it was the longest they have ever spent writing together and is focused on the forces that threaten to pull the world apart and how we must resist. WE has a big narrative arc that makes for a real rollercoaster of seven tunes that go from light to dark and back and with plenty of joy expressed amongst the tensions.

Review: Arp Frique & The Perpetual Singers come together for this most personal gospel funk album which was inspired by the birth of Frique's daughter, Jesamy. It finds the Amsterdam-based multi-instrumentalist mixing up organic funk with obscure synths, bubbly basslines that are always on the move with swirling guitars that add the colour and all make for an unusual and interesting mix of P-funk and gospel-disco. There are plenty of universal messages throughout which all emphasise the need for unconditional love while legendary vocalists like Dennis Bovell, Muriel Blijd, Mariseya, Brandon Delagraentiss and Rocq-E Harrell contribute to the powerful sound. Delagraentiss's choir, The Gospel Experience, also do their bit by adding big, rich, heartfelt vocals. It's quite the listen.

Review: Stockholm-based multi-instrumentalist and composer Art Longo impresses here with Echowah Island, a new album sure to wind its way into your affections. It was crafted over years in his home studio and is "psychotropical pop" drawing deep inspiration from late 80s music and dub. The album's lush soundscape evokes orange sunsets and ocean breezes and is layered with spring reverb, space echo and wah-wah effects that smooth out the edges as the steady pulse of vintage drum machines moves things on down low. A standout feature is Claudio Jonas, whose ethereal vocals recall classic French femme fatale singers of the 60s. Her poetic, kaleidoscopic lyrics add to a nostalgic dream world that gently bends reality and makes his both escapist and thought-provoking.

This career-spanning compilation brings together 19 key tracks by the Swedish DJ and producer, zooming back in mainly on the key works by Berg under the Avicii name, on top of another unreleased tune, 'Let's Ride Away' with Elle King. Avicii's instinct for brain-lodging hooks is on full display here, from the anthemic and unforgettable 'Wake Me Up' to the introspective of 'Heart Upon My Sleeve'. Also included are fan favourites like 'The Nights', 'Without You' feat Sandro Cavazza, and 'Lonely Together' feat Rita Ora, tracing his evolution from bedroom producer to international headliner.

It's packed with gold that fuses soul and funk, jazz and disco into a load of killer cuts that never got their own release. There are husky vocal tracks featuring Merry Clayton on "Oh What A Lonely Feeling," "I Really Love You" and "What's the T?", sensual soul stirrers from Carla Vaughn such as "Mystic Voyage" and "Together Forever" and of course liquid synths and rhythm sections underpinning each of the tracks.

Review: The sophomore Bad Brains album, and last before their initial break up (the first of many), is arguably just as essential as their self-titled debut. Not only because it features a hefty amount of its predecessor's cuts, redefined by the late, great Ric Ocasek of The Cars (responsible for manning the boards on several vital punk and alt rock releases, just ask Weezer), but it also made clear that the dynamic melding of hardcore punk fury and deep-rooted understanding of reggae nuance was far from a fluke. If anything, 'Rock For Light', marked the true arrival of what is now commonly considered to be the most boundary-pushing, talented and visionary acts to ever see the beauty within the cacophony.

Review: Chris Bangs' varied and eclectic musical journey is a key reason he was chosen to curate a compilation for Ace. With a background ranging from space rock with The Mighty Om to DJ residencies across London, Bangs' career spans numerous genres, from jazz, funk, to soul. Bangs' DJ sets and parties - in such time-honoured venues as Special Branch in Brentford, London - were seminal in the evolution of the acid jazz genre alongside Gilles Peterson, where "acid jazz was never meant to be more than a pisstake". His foray into production, such as the proto-acid jazz classic 'Psychedelic Jack' with Peterson on vocals, cemented his legacy, but it's curation highlights such as this that really get our gears going. Hold tight as we scour early acid jazz brilliants from Gunky to Vera Cruz to Brazilian Skies to Jubilation.

Review: Jamaican rocksteady grandstander Keeling Beckford enjoyed a near three-decade hiatus after the release of his second album Stay Tuned, which would have seemed to round out his LPs game for good (though his usual remit of 7"s would carry on strong). So it of course came as a surprise that he might release a brand new record as recently as 2019, on the very same New York reggae and early hip-hop label 12 Star, which Beckford helped found way back in 1978. The label was also graced by Horace Andy and Delroy Wilson over the years. Try Me now hears a reissue through his own Keeling Records sublabel: here, Beckford's stylistic rocksteady rollicks take the form of loving lullabies, where all the tracks seem dedicated to the smitten-sounding voice heard through the wire in the opening sequence. Angelic, intumescent, cloud nine rocksteady, from a real and enduring Kingston great.

John Beltran and Shane Donnelly preside over seven sumptuous and confident slices of modern, sub-kissed soul and Latin sure to put a smile on anyone's face, even those of us faced with an altogether more British summer. Influences range from the Steve Wonder-style double vocals of 'Bliss Mode' to the South American 'Rhythm of the Sun', which echoes the beach bum haziness of Jorge Ben, but the vibe remains joyful and skillfully yet effortlessly executed throughout. Gorgeous.

A Tabua De Esmeralda is the 11th album the great singer-songwriter and guitarist recorded and it came back in 1974. It was soon lapped up by fans and critics alike for its timeless blending of samba rock with his unique alchemy and sonic satire and found Ben redefined the vocal style he has showcased on previous work Forca Bruta. This time his vocals occasionally go off-grid and sit behind the beats to make for an alluring effect, while the album was also the last to use guitar quite as extensively.

Review: Bruno Berle's No Reino Dos Afetos is a stunning example of modern Brazilian pop, blending heartfelt emotion with a wide range of musical influences. Hailing from Maceio, Berle brings the warmth and beauty of his coastal home into every corner of this album. Released in a vibrant blue vinyl repress in 2024, the album is a journey through soft, intimate compositions that explore love, tenderness, and beauty. Berle's smooth, golden voice is the heart of the record, effortlessly gliding over songs like 'Quero Dizer', where the mix of lo-fi production, kalimba, and guitar creates an irresistible, laid-back groove. His raw emotional power shines in tracks like 'O Nome Do Meu Amor', an acoustic tearjerker brimming with sincerity. Berle's versatility is clear, moving from indie rock on 'E Preciso Ter Amor' to the sun-soaked soul of Joao Menezes's 'Ate Meu Violao', which opens the album with a nostalgic touch of 70s MPB. His take on West African highlife in 'Som Nyame' adds even more richness to the mix. Every note feels personal, capturing both simplicity and depth. This album solidifies Berle as one of Brazil's most exciting young talents.

Review: Billy Idol, one of the most iconic figures in British rock history, has returned with his first full-length album in over a decade. Known for his punk roots as a member of Generation X and subsequent MTV-era persona, Idol has constantly evolved, blending his early rebellious spirit with a more reflective, mature approach to life and music. This latest release captures that transformation, offering a blend of punk rock energy and introspective storytelling. Idol's partnership with longtime guitarist Steve Stevens continues to define his sound, while collaborations with rock legends Joan Jett, Avril Lavigne and Alison Mosshart further solidify his place at the forefront of rock's new generation. Having emerged from the early days of British punk, Idol's legacy spans decades, and this new record marks both a personal reflection and a return to form.

Review: An attention-evader even for the most ardent dub reggae fan, Black Jade's Contempo remains a mystery decades after its release. In the act of reissuing the LP, Solid Roots still only partly lift the veil: first set to tape between 1975 and 1976, the album was recorded by a still shadowy cadre of Notting Hill residents, who are said to have freely distributed it during Carnival. Their continued anonymity may form part of a decided effort to mythologise, though it almost certainly also reflects a niche facet of deeper-shades dub. Authenticity abounds: we hear preemptions of the hiss-floored undulations of Chain Reaction in this record as much as we do the busy instrumental imbroglios of Horace Andy, with the manly bass-charges of 'Virulence' polarising the sensitive subby coos of 'Love, Love, Love'.

Review: Not many heads might know of Blackalicious, a young hip-hop squadron that emerged in the mid-to-late 90s, and whose zulu warrior-themed debut album 'Blazing Arrow' earned them much acclaim. Known for their posi vibes, which the band dubbed a 'positive tip', DJ Chief Xcel and rapper Gift Of Gab rarely delved into hip-hop's stereotyped violent lyrics. Now, the LP receives its much due reissue; for those who remember, a lesser-known Gil Scott-Heron collab, 'First In Flight', even appears on the A-side.

Review: Out of time or simply timeless? Greater Manchester's most-beguiling quintet are open to interpretations, with their latest long-form perhaps the strongest case in point to date. There's plenty of nods to the 1970s in both their look and the feel of tracks such 'If You Think This Is Real Life', which owes much to disco pop from an age the band are too young to remember.

Elements of David Byrne in Talking Heads party mode are also audible, 'Your Girlfiend' and 'Falling For Someone' are perhaps the strongest examples. And yet Blossoms remain of the here and now. One play of 'Like Gravity', which closes out this collection, exemplifies this, its scope so huge it could only be born in an age when the rise of DIY and resulting rejection of rulebooks has re-opened playing fields of grandiose ideas to both major and minor acts.

Review: Hamilton Bohannon's debut Stop & Go, first dropped back in 1973 and is a raw and essential slice of early 70s funk. Though maybe more known for his later disco hits, here Bohannon delivers something earthier-looser grooves, soulful vocals and inventive arrangements that simmer rather than explode. This album offers a deeper, more nuanced sound compared to his polished, high-energy disco work and highlights include the blissed-out 'Singing a Song for My Mother,' the deep funk of 'Happiness,' and the widely sampled 'Save Their Souls.' A crate-digger favourite and funk connoisseur's gem, Stop & Go is a percussive, spiritual, and downright nasty record that holds up start to finish.

Review: Fraud's third full-length of 2024 is another example to his unparalleled consistency in street rap. Partnering with producer Harry Fraud, the album marries Fraud's dynamic, loop-based production with Boldy's gritty, introspective lyricism. Fresh off the success of the The Alchemist and Nicholas Craven, The Bricktionary solidifies Boldy's legacy as a steady force in hip-hop, crafting vivid, haunting street tales with every verse. Fraud's production is a perfect match for Boldy's style, blending chipmunk soul, trap beats and atmospheric soul samples to create a backdrop that's both complex and accessible. Tracks like 'Shadowboxing' show Boldy's lyrical dexterity over airy, 1980s-inspired loops, while 'Speedy Gonzales' pulses with a bouncy drumbeat, driving the track forward with intensity. Guest features like Tee Grizzley on 'Cecil Fielder' and Benny the Butcher on 'Rabies' add flair to the album, but it's Boldy's nuanced storytelling that shines throughout. On tracks like 'Harvey Grant' and 'Fish Grease', Boldy reflects on his journey, blending the mundane with the profound as he recounts struggles and triumphs with masterful clarity. The Bricktionary proves that Boldy James, alongside Harry Fraud, remains a force in the game, offering yet another standout project in a year already brimming with stellar releases.

Once it was done, the band's legendary frontman David Bowie went back to his solo career and never looked back. Over the years, the album has take on cult status with Uncut magazine once calling it "extraordinary" and placing it in their list of 50 Great Lost Albums. It is a must-have record with plenty of pure-Bowie moments such as 'baby Universal' and singles like 'You Belong In Rock N Roll,' which did well in the charts at the time.

Review: This deliberately mysterious outfit hailed from Italy, and this, the first of two previously ultra-rare and highly collectible LPs, is no less than a psychedelic classic, chock full of wild keyboards, fuzz guitar rampage, blissed-out trance states and fearful avant-garde trickery. It's been ascertained that Braen's Machine was the work of heralded soundtrack composer Perio Ulimani, as well as Morricone collaborator Allesandro Allesandroni, and this would make perfect sense, as "Underground" is very much in the metier of Italian soundtrack legends Goblin, and bound to appeal to fans of the widescreen psych sweep of Aphrodite's Child. Review: During last year's lockdown in Italy, contemporary dub producer Paolo Baldini was invited by Pressure Sounds to work on Bunny Lee's archive of recordings he made with singer Barry Brown during the mid-to-late 1970s. The results can now be heard on Praises, a set which adds a little more dub-wise spice to classic roots reggae cuts while retaining much of Lee's production and instrumentation. Brown's vocals - effortlessly soulful, hugely evocative and partially improvised - are simply superb, while Baldini's handling of Lee's riddims and musical arrangements is masterful. As a result, the assembled dubs, versions and vocal reworks sound faithful to the period in which they were recorded while adding subtle new touches and 21st century-ready low-end weight.

VII was produced by Brenneck and engineered by Simon Guzman and has plenty of their signature taut, groove-driven tracks that blend Afro-soul, doom rock and 70s psychedelia. They were all recorded in California and feature the percussionist Rich Tarrana, who adds his own fresh texture without detracting from the raw, hypnotic MO of the band. As usual, this is music that is equal parts cinematic and visceral and is perfect for nocturnal drives and deep immersion. Now more than two decades in, The Budos Band are still able to surprise and compel.

Review: Since debuting on the label 18 years ago, Danny Byrd has become one of Hospital Records most reliable and prolific artists. Even so, Atomic Funk - his fourth album - marks his first full-length outing for five years. It goes without saying that he's in fine form, gleefully flitting between heavyweight 21st century jungle revivalism ("Salute", 'Starting It Over", the piano-laden badness of "Roll The Drums"), sunshine ready disco drum and bass ("IDragon", Patrice Rushen-sampling "Holy Star"), shimmering electro-fuelled rollers ("Supreme", "Atomic Funk") and the kind of soulful, radio-friendly fare that's become a hallmark of Hospital releases in recent years ("Hold Up The Crown", "Money Calling Me").

Review: Donald Byrd's Kofi, part of the esteemed Tone Poet Vinyl Series, presents a compelling snapshot of the trumpeter's transition from hard bop to fusion. Recorded in December 1969 and December 1970 but only released in 1995, this LP captures Byrd at a pivotal moment in his career, straddling the line between traditional jazz and the emerging fusion genre. The 1969 session features Byrd's originals 'Kofi' and 'Fufu,' with Duke Pearson's electric piano adding a shimmering layer to the complex arrangements. The ensemble includes notable musicians such as Lew Tabackin on flute and tenor saxophone, Frank Foster on tenor saxophone, William Campbell on trombone, Ron Carter on acoustic bass among other strong musicians. The 1970 session continues this exploration with tracks like 'Perpetual Love' and 'Elmina,' featuring Wally Richardson on guitar and Mickey Roker on drums, along with Moreira and Dom Um Romao adding percussion. This reissue, curated by Joe Harley and mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog tapes, is pressed on 180g vinyl and housed in a deluxe tip-on jacket. The Tone Poet Series ensures exceptional quality in both sound and presentation, offering a definitive version of Byrd's adventurous work.

Review: Bologna, 1979: Change begins as a studio braintrust linking Mauro Malavasi, Paolo Gianolio and Davide Romani, with production steered by Jacques Fred Petrus. Nearly half a century on from their debut LP The Glow Of Love, cut between Italy and New York - blanketing the mean dancefloor in Euro-import modishness - we're now met by the sweet sonic hug that is Embrace, carrying the group's name after early plans to release it as a solo project of Tanya Michelle Smith, longtime vocalist member of the band. Maruro Malovasi's tender hand is given most productive airtime here, building on but reworking many of the same elements heard on 2018's Love For Love, and enlisting a sneak remix of 'Sunrise Forever' by Michael Gray, already a Traxsource chart-topper. Just 500 copies of this one, so hold tight before it's gone in a neon flash!

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

Given that even their most dancefloor-focused tunes are remarkably deep, immersive and sonically detailed, you'd think that Chaos In The CBD's music would suit the album format - it's just that until now, they've not recorded a full-length. A Deeper Life, then, marks a big step forward in the Helliker-Hales brothers' career. Predictably, it's borderline brilliant. Made with the assistance of a cast of collaborators and guest performers (flautist Nathan Haines, boogie revivalist Saucy Lady and original NJ garage-house hero Josh Milan included), it sees the Kiwi duo sashay their way through enveloping, musically expansive cuts - many downtempo and home-listening focused - that variously mix and match elements of deep house, nu-jazz, dub, 80s soul, hip-hop, trip-hop, Latin soul and much more besides. A genuine triumph, even by their high standards.

Review: Pearl Charles presides over the true with Desert Queen, her most refined work yet: a bittersweet set recorded in Joshua Tree with producer Lewis Pesacov and mixed by Michael Rault. Drawing on the velveteen textures of classic Stax sides, the album drapes Charles's crisp songwriting in brass, strings and soft grooves, caught somewhere in the smoky control of Karen Carpenter and the group swagger of Memphis session royalty. This is west coast country-soul at its most elegant, with a light touch and a lingering warmth.

With a batch of new, ludicrously catchy curbstompers detailing the highs, lows, and (especially) in betweens of Australian life, the band admitted simply that the title is designed to instil that same feeling of "woah, no way, cool" in young music fans the same way Green Day's 'Dookie' did for them once upon a time. She crafts elegant and emotive music mainly using her voice and cello, plenty of effects units and draws on ambient for her inspiration. What results is atmospheric and intimate music that is utterly enchaining as this album on 4AD proves across ten tracks that come after she spent an intensive period studying Chinese dance forms. Lead single 'Echo' is a pop song about ancestral trauma that walks a thin line between respect for the past and the hope and freedom of a new future. It's captivating indeed.

Review: This year, 2024, Clannad, the BAFTA and Grammy award winning Irish band, celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Legend, the classic soundtrack to Robin Of Sherwood, the acclaimed 1980s British TV series based on the legend of Robin Hood. Recorded exclusively for the series, the record's much salivated over tracklist actually sparked a ten year search for "extra tracks" after the original reels were "lost" - in a statement posted on their website in 2003, Clannad said of the record: "there were several other pieces of music recorded for the 3rd series of Robin of Sherwood that were not included on the Legend album. Unfortunately no-one has been able to locate the master tapes of this music. The search is continuing and hopefully one day these recordings will be able to be released." Marking the first time that an Irish band would win the British BAFTA award for Best Original Television Music, the mood is one of righteous deservedness: Legend's highlight is 'Robin (The Hooded Man)', that breathy, polished and effects-doused theme tune most people know unconsciously if not consciously, as it has seeped into the popular imaginary. This edition also features the extra "music only" tracks not featured on prior releases, and which were formerly accessible only on the Blu-Ray.

Review: Italian techno heavyweight Claudio PRC's fifth album, Self Surrender, is a meditative dive into self-acceptance that comes on Amsterdam's long-running and always top-notch Delsin Records. Claudio delivers a fluid narrative across an exploration of tasteful ambient, dub, minimal house and deep techno here, and it opens with some absorbing introspection before gradually shifting into more kinetic territory. It is driven by pulsing kicks, dreamy textures, acid flourishes and ghostly strings as a refined blend of techno and house sounds all coalesce with the signature depth Claudio has honed over years of his craft. Self Surrender closes on an ethereal note, which encapsulates its core message of letting go.

It features previously unreleased recordings by the late, great John Coltrane and his regular accompanying players (pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison and Drummer Elvin Jones). The reels of tape the tracks were salvaged from were dated 1963, around the time that the quartet laid down some of its most forward-thinking work for the legendary Impulse label. Much of the material consists of original Coltrane compilations, though there are a few notable covers (including a great version of jazz standard "Nature Boy") dotted throughout. As you'd expect, Coltrane's performance is incredible from start to finish.

Review: These are buoyant times for leftfield hip hop rooted in experimentation and lo-fi sonics, and here comes Denzel Curry returning with a serious lesson for all newcomers. Hailing from Carol City, Florida, Curry has been dropping pure fire for more than 10 years, but his current form is pushing him even further into the global rap conscious. Kenny Beats is taking no prisoners on the production, while Curry's righteous anger gets processed, re-pitched and mashed up and still it lands every blow. Moving through skits, mad samples and heavyweight tracks, this is everything a visionary hip hop LP should be.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve split at the top but otherwise in excellent condition***

Captured live in 1974, this performance at Carnegie Hall showcases Miles Davis at the height of his electric fusion era, blending jazz with rock in a fierce, exploratory manner. The show features the monumental 'Moja' and 'Wili,' each spread across two parts, with the band improvising freely and building intricate, pulsating rhythms. Davis's trumpet and organ create a swirling, unpredictable sound, while the guitar work from Pete Cosey and Reggie Lucas adds texture and energy. Tracks like 'Tatu' and 'Nne' display Davis's shift towards African-inspired sounds, experimenting with complex rhythms and haunting melodies. This is a tour de force, an unfiltered snapshot of Davis's creative genius.

Review: Richard Fearless, London-based DJ and producer, returns with a daring reinvention of his electronic vision, delivering an unpolished, analogue-driven techno masterpiece. Stripping away any semblance of commercial sheen, he dives headfirst into a world of disintegration and overload, where every track feels like it's teetering on the edge of collapse. Drawing on his deep affinity for the rough textures of underground techno, the work channels influences ranging from the industrial growl of Ramleh to the acidic pulse of TM404, with moments that recall the claustrophobic minimalism of Mika Vainio and the haunting drones of Loop. Fearless is unafraid of pushing boundaries, his machinesifed by years of use and a tangled web of circuitryiemitting strange, almost sentient sounds, as if alive in their own right. What emerges is an album that doesn't simply reflect the artist's influences, but speaks with a distinct, personal voice. Tracks like 'While My Machines Gently Weep' and 'Death Mask' bear the hallamrks of live takes and dub-inspired mixing, creating a haunting, almost otherworldly quality, the machine noise blending with echoes of the past. Fearless has long been obsessed with dub and here, he allows its principles to guide him, distilling decades of musical history into something that feels deeply present. A vivid portrait of an artist grappling with his own sonic ghosts and the fractured landscape of modern dance music, it's quite the spectacular.

Review: For Those Who Understand is a collection of raw dubs as played on the Boom Shacka Lacka Sound System between 1991 and 1995. Eight of the best have been collated for this hard hitting long player which is often spoken about as something of a classic of the genre. Each of the tracks has been twisted, tweaked and laden with plenty of effects so that synths squeal and you can really feel the bass in your chest. Some rumble on like a weighty elephant, others strike you over the head like a hammer, but the impact either way is inedible.

Review: When English producer Sam Yamaha emailed Dixon, crediting his early beats as inspiration, Magic, Alive! began. Intrigued by the mail, Dixon met Yamaha in London and unearthed a trove of beats that fit his evolving vision. Then, back in Richmond, Virginia, in mid-2024, Dixon built this resulting album from those sounds after teaming with past collaborator Koff and a vibrant crew including the likes of Anjimile, Pink Siifu, Reggie Pace, Eli Owens and more. Together, they sculpted a dreamlike world of hooks, horns and flowing interludes. Following the emotional depth of For My Mama... and Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!?, Magic, Alive! is a fine sonic reinvention that's playful, surreal and defiantly alive.

Review: Talk about taking absolutely no prisoners, Das El Salaam's DJ Travella has definitely learnt a lot from UK hardcore, hardstyle and gabber, and yet Mr Mixondo feels like it could take all of those frenetic and frantic genres to the cleaners if you were wanting to do an intensity comparison. Representing the nascent Tanzanian 'breakneck dance' scene, it's not for the weak of heart.
Starting producing four years ago - when he was just 15 - the man also known as Hamadi Hassani has certainly learnt his craft in that time, and the high nrg, often chaotic nature of what's here does infer an absence of quality or attention to detail. A full blown experience and journey through the heart of a contemporary Africa arguably pushing more electronic boundaries than any other continent right now.

Review: First Word Records present a new album from Don Leisure with Amanda Whiting. Beyond The Midnight Sun expands upon ground first explored on Don Leisure's track 'All Praises Due', which also featured harpist Amanda (with Angel Bat Dawid), and featured on his previous album 'Shaboo Strikes Back'. This is a full-length project on which these two formidable Welsh artists have collaborated together. "The project is a journey down the road that was revealed to me on 'All Praises Due' on 'Shaboo Strikes Back'. I wanted to move in a different direction from the beat tape format on my previous releases while still maintaining the core Don Leisure sound, fused with live instrumentation and vocals etc". A seven-track affair comprised of delectable spiritual jazz fused with hip hop beats, psychedelic electronics and a touch of soul.

Review: Leftfield heroes Don't DJ and NWAQ (aka Newworldaquarium) nudge their own sonic boundaries on Fashion, a fantastic mini album for on Meakusma. The tracks were recorded live at Meakusma Festival 2019 and at a residency preceding the Belgian event and fuse weird percussive techniques, glassy synths and airy light house with abstracted techno sound. It's a collage of sonic experiments that burrows deep into your brain one moment ('Central Bern/No Burn') and then sooth you the next ('Vanessa'). It's is the collision of two distinctive styles and thrilling new ground that is found as a result that makes this such a compelling record.

Review: Multi-genre acrobats and 70s American rockers The Doobie Brothers are back with more silky smooth signature harmonies from their home base in California with Walk This Road, a ten-tracker that unites core members Patrick Simmons, Tom Johnston, John McFee and Michael McDonald. It was produced by John Shanks and does a fine job of working each member's unique songwriting style into a cohesive collection. Themes of recovery, reflection and spiritual awakening run throughout, with Simmons describing it as "waking up to see the important things you've been missing." The title track has the legendary Mavis Staples and stands out as a fine soulful anthem of unity and hope that will resonate in any era.

Review: Among heads, this is of the most hotly championed hip-hop collab records of all time - and yet it is all too unknown. Doomstarks is the fabled collaboration of masked raconteur come rapper MF Doom and one of nine sonic samurai, Ghostface Killah (here known as Tony Starks); Swift & Changeable: The Prequel is their quick-wristed, mic-proximate debut mixtape, released in 2012. Just as some comic books series would prologue their main stories with pre-release strips, The Prologue served as the "unofficial" warm-up to accompany the pair's long-anticipated debut album of the same name. The Prequel hears some of Doom and Ghost's most popular tracks and collabs from various projects, including the original Doomstarks tune 'Vistory Laps'; the album provides a chopped but not screwed experience, playing out in the style of a gapless, scratch-heavy DJ mix.

Pressed exclusively for RSD Indie Black Friday, it includes a unique inverted album cover. The original album is some of the cult pop singer's most daring work to date, exploring a blend of genres and defied trends during the creative process with her brother Finneas in Los Angeles. It made for another cohesive and emotionally impactful journey from start to finish.
