Review: Russian donny deepsmiths Bop and Subwave team up for the first post-Med School (RIP) signing to Hospital and it's a bit of a special one. A full showcase of styles, it gives us much more than you'd ever expect from either individual. "Teardrops" is a glistening oceanic steppy, all spiralling, cosmic and sensual in all the right places, "Space Warp" is the dancefloor bomb of the package with its swooping droning bassline, "Don't Wake Me Up" takes us into shoegazing, head-tickling indie dance territory while "The Touch" closes on a sexy UKG tip that none of us would expect from the duo. What an impressive debut collaborative EP statement, we can't wait to hear what's next.

Review: Since signing to Hospital in 2018, Degs has been on a quick train to the top. This long-awaited debut album is likely to increase the hype surrounding him. It's a hugely vibrant affair in which he adds his own vocals to tracks he wrote and produced, sometimes in collaboration with an all-star cast of guest artists (think S.P.Y, Logistics, Unglued and LSB for starters). There's much to enjoy throughout the hot-stepping, soul-fired set, with highlights including the fizzing D&B soul of opener "Driving Under Lights", the downtempo beauty of "4 Days", the soaring brilliance of "Colour My Soul", the floor-friendly hustle of previous single (and Adamski/Seal cover) "Killer", and the synth-sporting punchiness of closing cut "Pamoja Forever".

Review: The wait is finally over! Hospital heroes Fred V & Grafix unleash their highly anticipated debut album. Has the wait been worth it? 100 per cent... Loaded with vibrant melodies, dynamite dynamics and perfectly executed vocals, it carries the perfect amount of clout for both dancefloors and headphones alike. Highlights include the shimmering twinkles and elastic bass of "Maverick Souls", the pummeling drums and timeless rave nuances of "Bladerunner" and the chart-destined arm-raiser "Catch My Breath". Yet another essential album from Hospital camp. Recognise!

Review: With Britain set to sizzle under a baking sun, we can think of worse things to do than head outside with a fat pair of headphones and Hugh Hardie's latest full-length on the CD player. His trademark brand of drum and bass has always been summery and sun-kissed, but "Shadows & Silhouettes" - his second album - is undeniably his most colourful, vibrant and soulful release to date. It sees him dash between sumptuous liquid rollers, punchy drum-funk workouts, jazzy smashers and a handful of surprise excursions (see two-step workout "Siren"). Of course, there are darker and weightier workouts within - check the mind-mangling revivalist jungle of "Offshore" and the seriously heavy "Cold Touch" - though it's the soaring brilliance of cuts like "Raindrops", "Evening Red" and "Endless" that catch the ear.

Review: In case you've not heard, Kings of the Rollers is a new D&B "super-group" featuring the combined talents of scene stalwarts Serum, Voltage and Blade Runner. This is their debut EP and, as you'd expect, it boasts far more hits than misses. As the Rave Alarm title makes clear, much of the material here is far more raw and intoxicating than your average Hospital release. Check, for example, opener "Euphoria", where razor-sharp electronic riffs bounce above fluctuating sub-bass and punchy jungle drums, and the rumbling gut-punch that is synth heavy title track "Rave Alarm". Elsewhere, Get Set Go is a fuzzy, hot-stepping workout, while closer "Running Man" wraps aggressive bass, creepy chords and ghostly flute lines around a retro-futurist riddim.

  4. Solar Heat (4:57)
Review: They're back! Serum, Voltage and Bladerunner return with their first new originals since last year's album and, as the title "Main Event" suggests, it's a pretty big deal. "XXX" opens with disarming stripped back intent. There's a bleepy techno twist in the tale and the tension is higher than Voltage's monthly fashion budget. Elsewhere "Somebody Else" sees them re-enlisting the scorching vocal diesel of Lydia Plain for another emotional skin-burner and "Solar Heat" ends the EP on a real groany, smelly distorted introspective vibe. Tremendous... And we haven't even got to the dessert event, which is a super sweet Circuits remix of "Burnt Ends". Crumbs!

  4. Headspace (3:46)
Review: The usually prolific Matt Gresham has been a little quiet since the release of his eighth album, "Hologram", in 2018. We suspect a new album is on the way, because this new EP comes hot on the heels of the long-serving producer's sole single of 2019. Whether or not that is the case, "Headspace" is superb, with Gresham flitting between snappy and soulful vocal drum and bass ("Stay True"), sweet, synth-laden intergalactic rollers ("Rebuild"), rapper-sporting liquid goodness (the festival-friendly positivity of "Brand New Beginning") and nasty deep space intensity (the appropriately titled "Headspace").

Review: Following its CD and digital download release last autumn, London Elektricity's fine new album - Tony Colman's eighth studio set - finally gets a vinyl release. For the uninitiated, "Building Better Worlds" builds (sorry) on the "big band" concept Colman unveiled at Hospitality In The Park in 2017, offering soaring, orchestrated tracks that take drum & bass to musically expansive new heights. There's barely a drum machine or sample in sight, while what electronic sounds that have been included are used sparingly. The results are undeniably impressive, with the assembled collective's warm and soulful tracks providing enjoyable listening throughout. It might raise a few eyebrows amongst jungle purists, but ignore the haters: this is a very fine album indeed.

Review: Young Dutch firebrand Maduk continues to scorch the D&B landscape with his first full length body of work. Showcasing his full spectrum, we stretch from barbed-soul, heads-down rollers such as "One Way" to the poppier, song-based hand-raisers such "The End" and the pumping filtered funk of the title track by way of off-tempo sideswipers such as the 150 breakbeat cut "One Last Picture". A highly accomplished album: As the entire scene watches his every move, the Liquicity champion continues to make all the right moves.

Review: Makato is often cited as one of the pioneering founders of Japan's drum & bass scene. He's now up to his sixth studio album and it finds his airy, rolling, sweet flowing beats all present and correct. "Tomodachi Sessions" derived from a series of collaborations with close friends who have all played a part in his 25 year career. DJ Marky, S.P.Y, Bop and MC Conrad all feature and lend their own personalities to an album that offers celebratory hands in the air tracks like "Shine On Through" next to more late night dancers like "Transparent" and melodic explorations like "Show Me How You Feel".

Review: When it comes to making soulful drum and bass and liquid funk, few are quite as good as Japanese D&B legend Makoto Shimizu. Given his status and track record, it's little surprise to find him finally popping up on Hospital Records - a label that seems a natural home for his particular brand of shimmering, summery breakbeat science. Salvation is his sixth solo studio album, and may well be his strongest to date. Packaged with guest appearances from a variety of like-minded producers and honey-throated vocalists - think DRS, Pete Simpson and Karina Ramage - the 14-track set is little less than a kaleidoscopic romp through soaring D&B, piano-laden liquid rollers, soul-soaked jungle and spacey, jazz-flecked dancefloor escapades.

Review: Bristol-based Brazilian S.P.Y has been in fine form this year, churning out the hits at a rate of knots. Here he serves up five more slammers to round off the well-received Alone in the Dark trilogy. Opener "Transmission" is undeniably one of his moth forthright tunes to date - a bombastic, riot-inducing anthem fuelled by thunderous electro bass and mind-altering riffs. There's also a tech-tinged feel to the rave-meets-D&B heaviness of "Transmission", while "Dominator Mode" contains some of his toughest drums to date. Elsewhere, "Lockdown" is a buzzing hum of throbbing energy and "Dreaming" tips a wink to the producer's liquid past via a wonderfully sauced-eyed fusion of blissful musicality and tight bottom-end pressure.

Review: Sticky times call for sticky beats. Not content with delivering one of the highlights on his mate Degs' album, gully boy wonder Unglued returns with another full-blast, wide-range EP. "Zen" counters the ruff with the buff as Cimone's soaring vocals are coupled with the smelliest bassline possible. Elsewhere "Algorithm" is a gritty techno-influenced thumper, "Mic Strangler" will be a highlight for many thanks to the tremendous skills of GQ and squidgy Zinc-style basslines by Gluey himself. Finally "Datafile" takes us deep into the rave with a savage array of breaks and layers on layers of darkness.

Review: Hospital Records has decided to close down Med School after 13 years, an imprint it used to offer up a mixture of more experimental fare and tracks from fast-rising artists. "Med School: Graduation" is the label's last hurrah - a triple-vinyl set with bonus 10" dubplate containing tons of previously unheard material from many of the artists who passed through the imprint over the years. It's a fittingly impressive and expansive finale, with highlights appearing at a rate of knots. We're particularly enjoying the slick jazziness of Bop's "Magic.gif", the dubstep-goes-tribal insanity of Royalston's insane (and insanely good) "Mark's Shibari Groove", the soundscape D&B shimmer of Etherwood's "Nowhere To Go But Everywhere" and the punishing peak-time brilliance of S.P.Y's "Black Flag VIP".
