Review: Electro is a style with an infinite number of sub-genres and for fans of the more raw, industrial and textural stuff then this is an EP for you. It's a split between Umwelt and Zeta Reticula, who goes first with a brilliant brace on the a-side. 'The Fate Of The Ship Unknown' is a storytelling track that journeys through an intergalactic space battle as lasers fly by at all angles. 'Documented Contact' is slightly deeper, with more resonant bass and percolating arps that are packed with intrigue. On the flip, Umwelt's 'Hyperspace' is all visceral lines, snapping kick and hi combos and sleazy synth that fires every synapse in your brain. 'Earth To Unknown' closes out in high speed and coruscated fashion for maximum dancefloor impact.

Review: Zeta Reticula is a Solvenian producer who you might also know as Umek. Away from his big room techno sounds under this alias he crafts much more nuanced and essential electro sounds as evidenced on this fierce five tracker pressed to limed clear vinyl. 'Wakefulness' is all jacked up drums and interplanetary acid and the beats bang just as hard on 'Analgesic Pathways' while 'Cholinergic Projections' is the most white knuckle ride of the lot with whip-snapping snares and hellish synths bringing the terror. 'Reticulate Speech' and 'Abducting Humans' close down with more melodic electro sounds.

Review: Umek's long-standing electro alias Zeta Reticula mints a self-steered new label with more of that nasty, slickly rendered machine funk business he's so respected for. 'Ascending Pathways' sets the tone perfectly with its nervy leads and bruising low end, while 'Chromosphere' digs into a knotty, rhythmic workout peppered with nagging arps. Review: In recent times the Zenker Brothers seem to have spent more time running their inspired Ilian Tape imprint than they have producing music. While we'd hardly criticize their choices - Ilian Tape goes from strength to strength - it's certainly good to have them back. The Munich-based siblings begin their first outing of 2020 with the melodious, far-sighted electro shuffle of "Shaketown", before wrapping mangled, mind-altering electronic riffs around a crunchy techno groove of "Chi Boost". "Bengel Mode" sees the siblings successfully combine alien-sounding riffs with a denser techno rhythm track, while closing cut "Outside" is a sparkling trip into hypnotic, slow-release ambient techno territory with nary a kick-drum in sight.

Review: Z@P and Stonem, both hailing from Uruguay, team up for a fresh and futuristic of the sonic character of their local acid techno scene. As functional and utilitarian as the robotized music heard therein is the name 'Split #1', which indeed shows that this is an EP flaunting two tracks by each artist; Z@P's tracks are groovier, funkier and more alkaline, opting for the sounding like the inner bloopings of a robotic mechsuit. Stonem's tracks deeper and more expansive by contrast, working in more arpeggiations and dramatic accompaniments, as if to suggest our protagonist has exited the mechsuit and confronted the dystopia of their now wartorn world.

Review: Better-known in the Motor City as DJ Gusto, August Williams makes his bow on Detroit's original techno imprint, Juan Atkins' much-loved Metroplex. He first offers up 'The Hook Up', a relaxed electro workout marked out by hip-hop tempo beats, sparkling synthesiser arpeggio lines and gorgeous electronic melodies, before opting for a more hypnotic, dark, clandestine and minimalistic techno sound on superb machine jam 'Dark T'. Williams successfully blurs the boundaries between late-night deep house and sci-fi techno on 'Pushback', while 'Submission' pairs a vintage Motor City techno style groove with discordant, mind-mangling motifs.

Review: A Detroit electro-bass classic! 'Boomin'' originally appeared on Will Web's second EP release, 'Extraterrestrial Phunk', on the legendary Detroit label Direct Beat in 1996. It was also featured in Dave Clarke's seminal 1998 'Electro Boogie' mix release. This long-overdue reissue includes the remastered original mix, as well as two previously unreleased versions - the 'Alt Mix' and 'Bonus Beats'. All versions of the track portrary a hollowed-out, leaden vision of the alt-future and command a fantastic use of reverb and space, as if the music were being blasted through a cybernetic bullhorn; everything sounds impressively analog, but the tracks all escape the common electro pratfall of requiring everything to sound front-and-centre.

Review: The mysterious Who is a Berlin based artist who releases brilliant music but only sporadically so. They launched their own Who Is Paula label in December last year. That was an original EP which now gets revisited and remixed for the label's second release. Electro don Cignol gets first with a plenty of rueful pad work and leggy drums. Vertical67 's take on 'Bang Tang' is hurried, with bleeping melodies and closely stacked kicks bringing the cyborg-funk. The Sound Synthesis remix is a punchy one that goes deep and Train Station (36 Night Train remix) is lo-fi and thoughtful, with end-of-the-night melodies sending you home in a blissful state.

Review: Limited Network's Max Watts has cooked up an EP here that has been written with a very specific use in mind - party rocking and DJ battle deployment. it is fair to say these timeless cuts tap into universal feel-good vibes with opener 'Immortal Funk' a perfectly acrobatic and supple wedge of techno funk. 'Karma' has icy drum machine sounds and 80s electro-funk overtones with bright digital synths and a killer bassline all ensuring you cannot help but move. 'Network Not Found' gets more weird and textured for the afters - the writing acid lines and gurgling dub undercurrents kept down only by a sneaking and cosmic lead synth.

Review: Steffi's Klakson label is one of the few real creams of today's electro landscape; inviting only the very best of the best artists, few of its contemporaries can really say they've managed to achieve the same feats in the same space of 20 years or so. The latest V/A EP to grace their rolling stocks, 'Weaponized Fuel On The Acid Playa', looks ostensibly like it could be homage to old-school UR or its many Dutch copycats, but in sound, it hears back completely differently, feeling like a future electro hellzone in which all manner of evil mutant experiments remain on the loose. By far the best-produced electro EP we've heard in recent months, you won't be disappointed by the likes of Shcuro's 'Feel' or Driven By Attraction's 'Weaponize'.

Review: Versalife is a master of the deep and one of many aliases from the Dutchman born Boris Bunnik. From dub to techno to the electro he explores here, his grainy sound is impossibly atmospheric. 'Copepods' opens up with far-sighted and sustained chords that speak of a future metropolis and 'Ultraviolet' then rides a lush broken rhythm and has melodies that glow like fireflies. 'Counter-illumination' gets more turbulent with its edgy lines and rubbery reverberating bassline and 'Vortex Storm' is like a reflective hall of mirrors with tension and eeriness in the air.

Review: Nuances De Nuit hits the mini-milestone of release number 10 here and does it in a standout fashion. Velvet Velour is behind the music and the opener 'Can You Feel It' is a superbly colourful house cut with futuristic neon lines and serene grooves. Review: Jersey City-based Jorge Velez has long been one of the US underground's most revered figures to those in the know. Largely predating the current fascination with lo-fi analogue productions, something shown on the excellent MMT Tape Series compilation which delved into his early archives, his work as Professor Genuis on Italians Do It Better and Thisisnotanexit was followed by the conceptual Hassan LP on L.I.E.S. which provided a soundtrack to an imaginary film based on a shadowy Middle Eastern cult formed in the 11th century. Here Velez return to Ron Morelli's stable with Territories, a six-track LP that passes through "menacing drones to EBM influenced floor tracks to Sakamoto-esque melodic experiments," with a "distinct atmosphere suitable for home listening or adventurous club play." Even for those who are familiar with the odd structures Velez creates with his hardware, this is a wild trip worthy of much closer inspection.

Review: First released back in 2007, UR's 'Hi Tech Dreams' is widely regarded as one of 'Mad' Mike Banks' most perfectly formed EPs - in part because its blend of optimistic techno futurism with dancefloor darkness offers a neat summary of the 'dreaming of utopia, living in a dystopia' message at the heart of Underground Resistance's militant ethos. But analysis aside, it's simply a terrific record - as this timely reissue proves. A-side 'Hi Tech Dreams' lives up to its promise, with far-sighted melodies, tactile riffs and soulful vocal samples rising above a loose-limbed Motor City techno beat. In contrast, 'Lo Tech Reality' is a moodier and more melancholic chunk of breakbeat-driven techno, while 'Hold My Own' is a murky, hip-hop influenced downtempo head-nodder.

Review: Ultradyne has been called a 'fundamentalist' techno artist, and while this is a term we've hardly come across to describe much techno before, we think we get the gist with this new release, Nativist. The five-tracks on this banger-filled 12" tend towards the novelty moods of early electro, with 'Native Serenade' emitting all manner of window-wiping, slippery acid sounds, and the bleepific 'What We Must Do For Chaos' creeping into superfast hardcore. Themes of nationhood and 'protecting the realm' are present, speaking to techno's ironic appropriation of militaristic defence themes.

Review: Cititrax's first Tracks 12" sampler did a good job in showcasing material from some of the Brooklyn-based label's favourite contemporary producers. This follow-up, arriving only a few short months after the first, aims to do the same. Returning for his second appearance, Tsuzing kicks things off with the razor-sharp shuffle of "Nonlinear War", whose intoxicating electronics and wild synth lines recall Brown Album-era Orbital, before London-based L/F/D/M takes a trip into bleak techno territory with the acid-laden "Mouth Holes". Flip for Silent Servant's deliciously grandiose, muscular electro-disco workout "The Touch", and the clanking industrial percussion, EBM attitude and humming electro beats of Maelstrom's "Lithium".

Review: You've heard of Two Shell, but now it's time for Two Cold, whom you almost certainly (and criminally) haven't. A mysterious project blending lo-fi, acid house, and electro, 'Desert Leather' is their latest statement of intentional crunch, spanning everything from dungeon-synthy workouts to bouncy acid oddballs. Review: Matti Turunen works as Morphology with Michael Diekmann most famously but also turns out super solo sounds, just not very often. Cultivated Electronics LTD, the vinyl off shoot of the main label, enlists the Finnish electronic maestro for just that here. This is an EP of irresistible electro-funk with cosmic intent. His lush melodies drift in well-made arrangements over clipped beats with plenty of melancholic tones in between. Some are more gritty like 'Xhante' while 'Radau' is an elastic rhythm with depth in the chords. 'Memnonia' cuts loose on a floating vibe with meticulously sequenced melody patterns falling like cosmic rain.

Review: Long before electro returned to prominence, Transparent Sound was serving up must-check slabs of body-popping brilliance. In fact, the Bangor-raised duo have now been releasing music for 27 years. 'Beneath The Beauty', the pair's latest single, first featured on 2019 album Gently Evil. It's a fine slab of punchy, intergalactic electro rich in undulating TB-303 acid lines, alien-sounding electronics, shimmering pads and potent TR-808 beats. It comes accompanied by a brand-new flipside rework courtesy of US electro veteran Freddy Fresh, who gives the track a darker, more claustrophobic feel while adding a sparkling new lead line that's impressively futurist in tone.

Review: Back in 2001, short lived Tresor Berlin sublabel Supremat released Mind Over Positive & Negative Dimensional Matter by Drexciya co-founder James Stinson under his Transllusion moniker. This much needed reissue features all three original tracks. There's the murky electro funk of 'Disrupted Neural Gateway', the minimalist beat dystopia of 'Do You Want To Get Down?' and more ghosts in the machine conjured up on B-side offering 'Power Of The 3rd Brain'. 2022 marked the 20th anniversary of Stinson's untimely passing.

Review: When a label calls itself Bring Dat Ass you can bet your bottom dollar that it's going to release proper sleazy electro. Enter Toribio with a superb four track EP of just that to get this new imprint underway. 'No Pare' is a firing cut the kick off with - synths dart about with their own mind, the tested bassline never lets up and the analogue drums jack for days. 'Work Dat Shit' is a little slower and bumpier with some bright acid prickles and 'Cimarron Palace' then unfolds with the same swing of a UK funky track. 'Anti Narcoleptic' is the best of the bunch - a weird and wonderful wonky out with clattering percussion and jumbled drum madness.

'Don't B Shy (Turn Around)' is pure sleaze. A dirty banger for dancefloor madness. This one from Tom Place has a superb Blade Runner-inspired bit of artwork as well as four high-impact bangers. 'Heartbreaker' is awash with gurgling synths and bubbling bass as tough electro drums get to work. 'Buttercup' then ducks and dives with twisted acid and flailing hits bringing a loose but compelling rhythm while 'Miniskirt' then plays with sleazy vocal samples and scruffy metal surfaces over hard techno drums. Review: Maceo Plex is best known for his Ellum Audio label but he also heads up Lone Romantic which explores a more heady and underground electro sound. And that's what we get here from Third Culture on his U Move EP. The title track opens with booming analogue kicks hitting hard beneath twisted talk box vocals and tripped-out melodies. 'Follow Me' then has fleshy bass darting about beneath fizzing synth work up top that will electrify any dance floor. Offering a third and final different look is 'I See You' which has an aloof of vocal amidst plenty of machine-made electro tension.
