Review: This is techno, but not as we know it from the Vigenere. Sparagamos (a fitting name given the word originally means to render, tear apart, or mangle) is behind these freaky beats but we nothing more about the artist. Suffice it to say they sure do have a fine grip of their studio and can manipulate sound in some thrilling ways. The opener is a warp-speed warehouse banger with distorted bass and manic energy, track two explores sludgy acid techno underworlds and track there is a twitchy cosmic workout with serene pads. 'Track 4' is a world of dystopian robotics while the flip side offers tripped-out, double-time dub techno, more acid intensity and experimental mind melters with exceptional sound design.

Review: Don't be confused; Silicon Minds aren't channelling hate into their music, even though a title like 'IHY' would almost certainly suggest as much to netizens well-clued in on their acronyms. Rather, here 'IHY' stands for 'Interstellar Hypnotic Yama-Biko', and given our coincidental encyclopaedic knowledge of Japanese folklore (a Yamabiko is an elusive mountain or canyon deity), we now know everything we need to know about this new EP from one of the many spiritual alias-essences of the house music collective Vibraphone. With a legit original version as well as a stellar remix from Derrick May, which fleshes out that legitness twofold, prepare to join the Yamabeko on a melodic-analogous house journey; through music, its Cheshire smile evinces deep concern for the sublime forests, mountainscapes and other natural formations we've neglected.

Those are certainly all the words you would use to describe the quiet brilliance of opener 'Find Ya' (feat Prince Morella) which is icy cool and hypnotic. On the flipside, 'Night Drive' is another sublimely soft focus and supple techno roller with infinite horizons and milky pads that dissolve your soul. A superb debut.

Review: Mikkel Rev presents UTE 013, a captivating sonic journey through the realms of trance music. This four-track EP on the Norwegian label UTE. REC showcases the artist's versatility and mastery of the genre. 'Zygo' pulsates with a frenetic energy, its psychedelic trance rhythms evoking an otherworldly sci-fi ambiance. 'Tone Control' leans towards Goa trance, its alien basslines and science fiction aesthetics creating a gripping narrative. For the second side, 'Whorl' offers a more uplifting and ethereal experience, transporting listeners to vast cosmic spaces. The piece of wax concludes with 'Tension', a 90s-style German techno track that showcases Rev's ability to fuse classic elements with modern innovation. Review: This third outing from the Unveiled Nuance label is another cutting-edge techno exploration that brings together loopy techno, bass, industrial and a little something unknown across four cuts from Means&3rd. It's all fizzing pads and rusty loops that hang off the meandering rhythm of opener 'Hardship Repackaged As Growth' while 'Countenance' then strips back to a more evocative and wide open bass cavern with static electricity charging up the drums and keeping you on edge. 'Character Ethic' is an icy and heady minimalist floater then 'Desperate & Relevant' shuts down with darker bass and echoing warehouse menace.

Review: An air of mystery surrounds this new While My Sequencer Gently Bleeps project, but what we do know is that they have two superb EPs dropping at the start of 2024. This one, OK, opens with 'Amber' which is a nice undulating and deep cut with lush synth smears. 'Emptiness' hangs synths in the air over more lithe broken beats and 'Felt' is a stripped back rhythm with majestic chords, blurts, bleeps and more all adding colour. 'Hesitation' and 'Burton' round out this sublimely supple and subtle synth record.

Review: The Unknown-Untitled gang is back with an eighth mysterious outing from the self-titled production outfit behind the label, whoever that may be. Again this is a limited edition 12" and again it is pure fire. 'rack 1' sounds like techno from a distinctly UK perspective, if you ask us - the bass drills deep, the synths fizz like static and chopped up vocal fragments bring the hype. The rest of the EP is a varied one that takes in clanging loop pieces, industrial tinged workouts like 'Track 3' and futuristic rhythmic explorations such as the tense, textured sounds of 'Track 5'.

Techno
Review: Underground Resistance likely owe much of their mythology to the Interstellar Fugitives series; a classic series telling the tale of the UR clique fighting oppression and music-industry corruption on a cosmic scale. It's certainly an experimental delight for most newcomers to the techno genre and/or those who want to trace the history of the sound. DJ S2 (aka. Suburban Knight) and Von Floyd (aka. Gerald Mitchell) are infamous members of the UR gang; both of them have enjoyed success in the genre, and as part of the clique, since at least the late 1980s. 'Post Emancipation Psychosis' is a classic slab of UR's anarchic, ironic militancy. With its orderly drum machine march, the eponymous track by S2 describes the paranoia and loss of mental clarity one might after having been freed from the coercive clutches of a former master; meanwhile, Floyd's 'Geiger Counter' is a super-early electro classic, channelling a bursting, radioactive soundbank even few producers today could replicate.

Review: First released back in 2007, UR's 'Hi Tech Dreams' is widely regarded as one of 'Mad' Mike Banks' most perfectly formed EPs - in part because its blend of optimistic techno futurism with dancefloor darkness offers a neat summary of the 'dreaming of utopia, living in a dystopia' message at the heart of Underground Resistance's militant ethos. But analysis aside, it's simply a terrific record - as this timely reissue proves. A-side 'Hi Tech Dreams' lives up to its promise, with far-sighted melodies, tactile riffs and soulful vocal samples rising above a loose-limbed Motor City techno beat. In contrast, 'Lo Tech Reality' is a moodier and more melancholic chunk of breakbeat-driven techno, while 'Hold My Own' is a murky, hip-hop influenced downtempo head-nodder.

Review: 2023 marks the tenth anniversary of Darren Woollard's debut release as DAWL. Since then, he's carved out his own niche as a maker of blisteringly good, retro-futurist blends of breakbeat hardcore, bleep, acid and electro. This trademark sound comes to the fore on opener 'Hear This', where alien bleeps, soundman samples and rushing riffs ride sweat-soaked breakbeat, before coming into sharper focus on the warped, analogue-rich, LFO-influenced bleep shuffle of 'Dark Chemistry'. Woollard adds a touch of funk to proceedings on energetic bleep and breaks workout 'Mindtrix', before once more reaching for dial-tone melodies, deep and dubby bass and clattering machine drums on killer closing cut 'I Control The Energy'.

'Unleash The Sound' opens up and doesn't mess about as it first lasers from a machine gun and old school jungle breaks smash away below. Review: Belarusian producer Four Walls is back - this time around he finds himself on the new Ultraworld Records imprint from DJ Craft. This one kicks off with the lush prog house and silky synth arps of 'Mind Charger' which soon takes you to the stars. 'Metamorphosis' is a more raw-edged and acid-laced techno stomper for peak time action and 'Summer Nights' is a bubbling, elastic tapestry of new age overtones, thudding kicks, and trance-tinged pads. A remix by Toronto-based Pletnev adds another dimension to this club-ready EP.

Review: DJ Europarking is an emergent alias from Dollkraut which tips towards fast, fun strains of hard techno with a mischievous streak. After a first 12" on UFO Inc in 2022 he revives the project for another outing which leads in with the trance-speckled thumper 'I Luv U Butt', a glorious fusion of gabba kicks and a maddening vocal loop. 'Cantado' is a mind-warping acid techno throwdown, while 'Strapped' brings Slimfit into the melee for a curiously spiritual uptempo workout with some Ibiza 99-ready lead lines. 'Purple Thang' finds its own anti-anthemic groove which will no doubt get fists pumping amongst the harder-faster crowd.

Review: Jeroen and Natasja aka The Connection Machine are cultured techno explorers who put out a fine array of sounds in the 90s on the mighty U-Trax as well as on Carl Craig's Planet E. New music came sporadically after that and included an album on Tabernacle, Presentiment. BlackHole+ was their highly anticipated second release following their sublime debut The Dream Techno Album and here it has been remastered for this welcome reissue. It features most of the tracks on the original as well as five tracks taken from ensuing EPs as well as a fine remix from Legowelt, all presented on limited black and white wax.

Review: It's 10 up for TVIR and to mark the occasion they have a fantastic five-track outing from Komponente. 'Gash' is a fizzing, dense and slow-motion cut with a grinding low end and some serious bounce in the drums and bass. It's both fun and menacing all at once and has real anthem potential once the vocals come in. 'Flowers' has a brighter melodic touch but also lashings of spiky acid and 'Sanctuary' is then a deft tech house workout with suspensory and angelic vocals. 'Mind Revolt' is an unhinged mix of ghoulish laughter and bright sine waves, then 'Veronika' shuts down with a meditative broken beat.

Review: TV Hill Records starts things off rough and curiosity-rousing, with a technical itch from OG AG (Andrew Grant) in collaboration with fellow producer Dimneonsum. A mid-paced deep techno calculator, 'What's Up Everybody' pares back any semblance of emotion for pure robotic urgency, with every sound moving in juddering clockwork lockstep in an abstracted world of pure, preservative mathematic topology. Opener 'San Fran' pits nervous FM loops against an equally anxious Shepard-tonal riser, while calmer moments such as the beatless 'Drakey' still disquiet with their eerie glassiness. One for the bleepy heads, the only humanistic element is the revelatory vocal sample on 'Found Out'.

Review: The creative partnership between Tiga & Hudson Mohawke expresses a mutual love of "hardcore romance," a liminal state where the bounds between euphoria, melancholy and the raw power of friendship disintegrate completely. Recorded in Los Angeles from 2019-2023, these commonalities ebbed and flowed through various recording sessions, culminating in their debut album - L'Ecstacy - the sounds in which "all come from the same place, the same musical universe," in Hudson Mohawke's own words. Review: Eternally prolific Wighnomy Brother Robag Wruhme is back with another album of his otherworldly, achingly delicate minimal tech house from way out in East Germany. Wruhme's music has always stood to the side of the standardised scene, and so it goes on this new one for Tulpa Ovi which passes through a variety of shades of 4/4 without ever sounding like anything else. Sometimes the composition his fragile and beautiful, elsewhere there's a looming creepiness pitched squarely at the night. Review: The TRUST XY series continues to yield outstanding explorations of where electro can and should head from here, guided by some of the best on the business. This project is all about crossing over interesting artists for unique results and so we get to see what happens when the likes of Versalife and Stenny pool their considerable talents. One of the most intriguing link ups is Microthol and Clatterbox, who lay down a full-fat, inventive strain of big room electro, while Alex Cortex and D Tiffany lock into something more streamlined and effective for the DJs out there. DL-MS and VC-118A are the ones to bring the deep side of the spectrum with their gorgeous 'Tides'.

Review: Privacy bounds into a tenth year of releasing with labels like Klakson, Klasse Wrecks and Cultivated Electronics already under his belt, and now it's the turn of Trust to carry the goods. The goods, as we've come to expect, are high-grade electro and techno with vintage synthesis at their heart. '+(82)' isn't a purely retro track though, but rather it takes a classic Detroit approach and gives it certain discoid shimmer which works a treat. 'Sword, NYC' is a nastier slice of down-low machine funk, while 'Ikebukuro Underground' explores techy 140 in outstanding style. 'Meduse' offers some light relief to play the record out in a more delicate kind of electro style.

Review: DJ Hyperactive's now-defunct Contact was the label that first put out this cult cut from 1996. Some 25 years later it now gets a welcome reissue on Truncate's own self-titled label and features a remix from the techno titan himself. 'Reptilian Tank' gets a breath of new life and a refreshing new remix by label boss Truncate. First up is the original - a head-wrecking, panel-beating techno rave-up with wispy pads and pulsating bass that is full of pent-up energy. The remix is a speedy, stripped-back version that races ahead with all the urgency of a shooting star.

Review: As Trule approaches the occasion of its 25th EP, Alpi is given the nod to take care of a sublime new four-tracker. This is an EP of stylish and subversive techno that is meticulously designed and all named after plants. The rhythms are suggestive rather than in your face but never fail to lock you in while you gaze at the fresh synths and unusual sound designs all around. 'Hedera' is first up and floats on air with skittish hits and detuned chords, then 'Oxalis' slows to a crawl that melts the mind. 'Aquilegia' has a sub-aquatic dub techno feel and 'Paeonia' is a double-time stepper.

Review: Raton has grown to be a quite an integral part of Drumcode as well as the underground at large and now after previously working on the likes of Ellum Audio he finds himself in the studio with techno bigwig, Adam Beyer. The pair cook up two versions of the same cut here. 'The Signal' (Night mix) is a dramatic cut with an epic baseline and space-age synth craft over chunky drums that are constantly on the rise. 'The Signal' (Day mix) is a much more melodic and light cut but has just as much low-end heft. Review: TRNWORK is a brand new label from Detroit native Pablo R Ruiz which he says will explore the darker side of the dance floor. The first release sure is a head-turner that opens with 'Bust It Out' (Raw mix). The drums are militant and scuffed up while off-grid claps and woozy pads bring extra dynamism. The Deep Mix then pairs it back to twitchy synths and minimal drums, and then a RELB Infinite Jek remix quickens the groove but keeps it dark, late night and moody. 'Vivelo' is the closer that will trip out any floor with its whirring synths and bleeps over crunchy drum funk.

Review: Argentina's Oscean land on Tresor with their latest effort 'Chromium Radiance', a quartet of sonorous, slowly orbiting tracks for the outer reaches. The EP feels deeply at home on Tresor, whose back catalogue it effortlessly channels while navigating the newer more elastic pathways in techno laid by artists such as Mark Fell & Gabor Lazar. The first track is a pensive, nervous sketch for the more introspective hours of the morning, with reese-like pads hanging heavy over skittering grooves, while the second, 'Neon Harmonies' is a perfect accompaniment to watching rain cascade down neon-lit panes, with heartstring-plucking pads and propulsive, SVN-esque subs. 'Blaster Imploder' throws it back with a spell of ruthless hydraulic electro jakk, before 'Echoes Of Chaos' closes things out with a twitchy, haywire big room techno energy calling to mind Regis' early slammers. Seriously versatile and entertaining EP!

Review: Waajeed's Memoirs Of Hi-Tech Jazz came out on Tresor in late 2022 as a definitive statement from a true Detroit original. Following the Motor City Madness remixes 12" which accompanied the album drop, here comes a follow up single shining fresh light on the project via a whole new set of remixes. There's no need to introduce a legend like Mark Broom - a stalwart of UK techno who brings his decades of experience to 'Right Now' as he remains in an enduring purple patch. Staying in the UK but coming from a whole different angle, Yazzus brings her upfront flair to one of the most compelling, emotionally charged pieces on the album, 'The Ballad Of Richard O'Bryant'. Then it's left to Jensen Interceptor and Assembler Code to link up for a remix of 'Memoirs Of Hi-Tech Jazz', complete with some of Black Nix's original poetic flow over the top.

Review: Tresor is a titanic techno brand that has very much had a large say in how the genre has sounded over the last few decades. The German club and label now welcomes Parisian artist UFO95 into the fold with his Backward Improvement EP which draws on elements of all the genre's many niches from London to Detroit to Berlin. 'Cogitor' is thumping and wried up with warped lines, 'Sexual Tension' has a more seductive sound with a rubbery and funky bassline and 'Fragment' then brings panel-beating loops for peak time showdowns. There is pure sci-fi atmosphere to the bells and the sonorous synths of 'Solar' and 'Gargk' closes down with a glitchy and ambient-laced breakbeat monster. Great variation makes this a useful EP.

Review: For the legendary label Tresor to put out a breakbeat record is something very rare. The ardent techno label for over 30 years is clearly telling us without saying, how good this music is. Tresor is always in touch with rave music though and it's not fully surprising that Tresor would support any music that is so reminiscent of the old skool days like Digital Entropy is. Datashader rises from the depths to give us their wicked debut. The EP is an audio onslaught that combines blistering breakbeat gems like 'Velocity 04.22' with eerie sci-fi pieces like 'Sync Out Off'. The AFX like 'Fong' and 'Sub Osc" are early favorites from those who have heard samples of this haunting record. It is rare to see the power of rave, breakbeat and IDM presented this well on one record.

Review: Baby Ford's Trelik label is as revered as they come in underground circles. Ion Ludwig is not far behind when it comes to his productions and so the two are a perfect match who reunite once more here. This fresh 12" kicks off with the brain cleansing minimalism of 'A Beladen Date 4 Ever', a silky groove doused in harmonic chords, with swirling pads and rubbery bass all tightly intertwining. 'Transport Fighter' is a more punchy cut with thudding kicks and heftier bass, but still a nebulous eco-system of pads and melodies swirling around up top. Two killer cuts. no doubt.
