Synthonic
Review: Formed from the collaborative minds of Tomoki Tamura and Giuseppe Tuccillo, Doublet has had one previous outing on Tomoki's Holic Trax earlier in the year, and now it returns for another 10" outing of sturdy deep house movements. "Discovered Night" pushes forth on a bed of measured acid bassline while gentle chords and subtle flute-like harmonies hover on top, making for a well balanced all rounder for the warm up slot or later hours. "Cosmic Sign" is a little more wayward with its stuttering percussive kinks and trippy synth lines, although it doesn't stray too far from the dependable path of deep house. "Synthonic" meanwhile makes a claim for anthemic status with its edgy string hook and carefully placed diva vocal, avoiding any overly obvious tropes while talking big at the same time.

Jacob B - "Basement Crowd"
Liam Geddes - "Somebody In The House"
Cecil - "BV"
Review: 124Black is the new sub label from 124 Recordings with the aim of promoting a darker, harder sound firmly rooted in the underground. All releases are strictly limited and available only on 10" transparent vinyl. First up is Jacob B, rapidly gaining a lot of recognition for his deep and chunky club cuts, aptly demonstrated on "Basement Crowd" with solid drums, suspense filled strings, a spoken word vocal and a bassline that shows you exactly where the title of this track comes from. Next is another 124 family member, Liam Geddes' late night jam, "Somebody In The House". With it's haunting stabs, groovy baseline and snare rolls, this a simple, yet very effective track that works equally as well in a small club or large warehouse! On the B-side, Cecil returns to 124 with "BV" a track very much aimed at the dancefloor and replete with the producer's signature deep stabs and chords, that work alongside a sub bassline that you feel rather than hear. A peak time track that has been doing the business this summer.

Finally (Vega DJ Tool)
Review: Released back on 12" in September on Planet E, the Terrence Parker and Reno Ka collaboration "Finally", displayed a heady combination of brisk instrumentation and soulful vocals from Ka which demonstrate why Parker is one of Detroit's most enduring producers. This 10" picture disc, sees another two equally as impressive versions of the same track; the "Backroom Mix" which substitutes the buzzing synths of the original for some hands in the air piano chords joining Ka's soulful vocals, and a DJ tool version of Masters At Work man Louie Vega's mix, which comes custom made for peak time transitions

A G Moment
So Get Down
Review: After kicking off Tomoki's Holic Trax back in 2012, Mr G is back on the 10" focused label once again with two cuts that tap right in to his skills in austere and immersive house music. "A G Moment" is a classic groover from the G camp, all heavily filtered chord throb and steadfast drums in a somnambulant but utterly soulful state of being. There's a touch more spice to be found on the flip side with the titular diva vocal licks that decorate "So Get Down", while the drums roll with a more pronounced weight, particularly in the bottom end.

Starts From Now
Review: Having scored releases on a staggering amount of top-shelf European house and techno labels, Och makes his second visit to Systematic to follow up on the Force Mass Control EP that he dropped in the not too distant past. This instalment finds the producer in fine fettle as he delves into his measured and atmospheric take on pristine house and techno. While the drums may sound a little raunchy on "Soul Burner" the haunting chord swells and poignant vocal hook add plenty of mystery to balance the track out. "Starts From Now" opts for a more concise kind of deep house, all elegiac pads and rock solid swinging groove.

Wuhti (feat Paleo Logos - DJ Soto Fett Bhakti Crew mix)
Review: Firecracker Recordings' Unthank label has been a decidedly intermittent concern since it's eye catching arrival back in 2010 with the Parris Mitchell mangling antics of Berlin dwelling Estonian producer Bakey USTL. It makes for somewhat poetic reading that the label's sixth release should usher in the return of a producer whose last apparent production credit was a contribution to the Fudge Fingas cut "Fidgety Friends" way back in 2007! Quite what the West Yorkshire based Denaji has been doing in the subsequent years is not clear, but your focus should be on his contributions here, with the Wuhti 10" quite sublime. The title track and "Dharma Dharma" are the sort of star gazing boogie and fizzing deep house that fit snugly into the overarching Firecracker sonic canon and do check the wondrous remix of "Wuhti" from Norwegian Sex Tags mastermind DJ Sotofett.

Bad Aura
Review: Having issued the frankly quite popular I Can Tell (By The Way You Move) 12" on Domino Records earlier this year, UK house stalwart (as Pitchfork call him) George Fitzgerald continues his chart bothering antics with a first record for the major indie's offshoot Doublesix. Lead track "Magnetic" unveils a new talent from Fitzgerald too with the producer casts aside the sampled vocals he's previously used in favour of unveiling his own brooding (and treated) vocals which contrast nicely with the pulsing synths and cavernous bassline, clasping drums of his production. Those averse to George's vocals should check out B Side "Bad Aura" which comes across as an alternate instrumental mix.

Science & Soul (Maximillion Dunbar Snares Down The Stairs mix)
Review: Don't Be Afraid serve up their final release of a most impressive 2013, presenting the third edition of their transatlantic flavoured DBA Dubs series sees which another label debut. As his recent turn out on The Kelly Twins Happy Skull label demonstrated, Adjowa has a talent for refracting boogie, house and Italo that makes him a perfect candidate to follow Claws For? and Kelpe. His excellent "Science & Soul" track is treated to a quite distinct "Snares Down The Stairs" remix from Future Times captain Max D, which the label quite aptly states draws on "grime, jungle and breakbeat hardcore tropes to create a truly otherworldly banger."

The Blitz (Data mix)
G Dub (Dark Park mix)
Review: After some time spent in anonymity, Gari Romalis' time has surely come and recent appearances for Hizo Deep Rooted Music and Dockside have brought the Detroit-based producer back into the limelight. On this turn for Rawax "The Blitz (Data Mix)" comes on with all the grit you'd expect of the Motor City, rocking a chunky, bouncing rhythm and some dusty, filtered samples beefed up and honed for maximum floor damage. "G Dub (Dark Park Mix)" meanwhile wriggles into a deeper framework comprised of a bugging bass synth, cool and deadly chords and yet more of that addictive Romalis bump. This is as sturdy a kind of club tackle as you could ever wish for.

Jersey Real Estate (feat Jovonn - Dubbyman remix)
Ex Friendly (feat Rich Medina - Dubbyman Space Out mix)
Review: There aren't many outposts in Europe quite as deep as Dubbyman's Deep Explorer, while the selector himself is well versed in communicating with the soul. Here on The Remix Capsule it's deep, soulful overload as Jersey Real Estate and Ex Friendly both get the remix treatment from the label boss, with both cuts featuring life-affirming musings from Jovonn and Rich Medina respectively. "What Is House" is the most blissful of trips, all sumptuous pads and keys drifting into eternity while the beat listlessly rolls out on a refined consortium of bongo drums. "Journey Man" is a more punchy track (well, by Dubbyman standards) as the synths look more upwards and the beat sports a funk injection that should make it work on smoother dancefloors.

Chiko
Review: Melbourne based artist Mike Steva debuts on the label Yoruba run by one of house music's finest Osunlade. His three track debut is an impressive one, which begins with the slightly despondent, yet hopeful "New Beginning". Steva gains this mood through his flutey and tubular percussion and sustained chords. Added to the A-side is "Moment in Time", where Rhodes, pianos and shakers back up the sultry vocals of Berlin singer-songwriter Georg Levin. The final track of the Visions of Paradise EP "Chiko", features finger-played piano's, resulting in a samba-esque flurry of jumbled keys and chimes.

Porentief (XDB reshape)
Review: Mirko Hunger & Klaus Rakete make up Freund der Familie and the duo have called upon a collection of consonants and vowels in RNDM, XDB and Aera to remix "Porentief", the title track from their last EP. The 10" remix package sees RNDM take up the A-side with a live and raw sounding rework, yet it's similarly poised and crafted. Aera's Skindeep dub sees and emotionally charged synth line wriggle like a worm throughout its arrangement, meeting keys that rise and fall with wavering fragments of pitch that shimmer and fray. Greek deep house producer XDB's statically charged reshape moves with penetrating force, aided by skittering percussion that scratches at a stark ambience of chord echoes and tense atmospheres.

Annie's Song (Shadow Child remix)
Review: Alix Perez here with a release you'd expect to surface on Eglo under his Arp 101 alias as opposed to Shogun Audio. Regardless, Annie's Song is a bold statement of Perez's undoubted production talents, demonstrating he's fully capable of producing tracks that in a perfect world would gain mainstream success. Teaming up with vocalist Sam Willis, "Annie's Song" is a vivid, 21st century slant on UK RnB replete with slow burning synths, half step drum programming and plucked strings. On the flip Shadow Child rewires the track for the club, fixing on an authentic UKG flex that sounds like it's been dug up from a forgotten DJ EZ mixtape.

Hold My Hand
Review: Next month sees Freerange boss Jimpster return to the album game with Porchlight and Rocking Chairs, this hand stamped 10" acts as a neat teaser for what to expect. Lead track "Rollergirl" pumps in arpeggio like a night drive scene from a '80s music video clip, while breathy male vocals whisper in the tracks background. It's a melodic piece fuelled by muted tension and soft aggression. On the flip is "Hold My Hand", a track featuring all the Jimpster trimmings; deep piano chords, spoken word vocals, chromatic synth loops and soft, yet thumpy drums.

Scuzzelbutt!
Between Us
Review: Banfield Audio's fledgling Monochromatic label return following a sterling debut emission from Specter and the label bosses themselves, turning to another under rated US producer in the shape of Amir Alexander. Despite his heritage, Alexander is only now really getting the wider exposure his explosive production capacity deserves and the Chicagoan's contribution here is an incendiary example of just what he's capable of. "Scuzzelbutt!" is Chicago acid house in a similar frame of mind to Larry Heard's prized Gherkin Jerks output, though the TR-led rhythms are precision tooled and crisp to a tee. Banfield Audio maintain their 100% appearance record with a slightly more sedate B Side saunter through classic Detroit deep house that accrues all manner of melodic charm as it progresses.

In Out
Review: Following a series of killer releases from Fred Everything, Cle and Lee Webster, Swedish label Local Talk look to Liverpool for their next deep house dispatch. Dale doesn't disappoint with two shuffle-jack workouts that plough deep grooves while maintaining a certainly air of subtlety. "Throwback" is the prize fighter thanks to minor-key organ bass that's so heavy it mutates to stabs on the build-up. "In Out", meanwhile, takes similar bass tones but softens them a little. Complete with cheeky female vocal hits, it's a pretty authentic homage to Chicago 15 to 20 years ago.

My So-Called Friends (Fred P reshape)
Review: With just one former appearance on a collaborative release for 8Bit, Michael Gracioppo gets snapped up by MCDE for a pair of decidedly oddball offerings with as much indie-pop and soul woven into the tracks as anything electronic. "My So-Called Friend" lolls around a vocal theme that sounds as though it could belong to The Flaming Lips school of songwriting, while a fidgety micro-beat and LFOing chords make up the musical construction. "Untitled" meanwhile pitches down a mournful croon to come on like Isaac Hayes while a snappy and detailed steppy rhythm pulses out underneath and bird noises tweet around the mix. Fred P brings a touch of focus to the first track with his remix, but still manages to keep the wayward spirit of the vocal intact.

Whereas the recent Eight Miles High hand stamped 12" was Flugel in loopy DJ tool mode, this split 10" sees him on classic Deep House form. The A Side contains a pair of cuts done under the Roman IV alias, with the spritely "Happy" coming off like a vintage Todd Terry production. On the flip Flugel and Alter Ego partner Jorn Elling Wuttke revisit the rarely used Holy Garage alias for the equally excellent excavation "Diver Down".

Review: Australian label Melbourne Deep Cast return! Originally released as part of this year's Record Store Day activities, this Snooze For Days 10" from Melbourne's finest deep house operators is now widely available and features cuts from the Man Fantastique, Andy Hart and Max Graef. Each has supplied some excellent beat down edits of material that some might recognize and others won't; Fantastic Man's slow burning "Paradise" for example is based around a devilishly pitched down vocal of a late 90s neo soul classic that only really comes apparent when the "yeah you might laugh" refrain comes looping into focus. Andy Hart is on straight up discofunk sleaze form with "My Queen" whilst Max Graef cranks up the dust on "Das Brett" which has the best double bass manipulation since Roni Size's "Brown Paper Bag".

Margine Call
Review: Mic Newman's Fine Choice label was established earlier this year as a vinyl only outlet for the Melbournite to release music under his immediately recognisable Fantastic Man pseudonym. The sample laden, beat down house and sun blemished disco of his debut Fine Choice missive is continued here (as is the chosen 10" format) with lead track "Tension" a wonderfully uplifting blend of smudged melodic keys, chugging techy drums and fizzing underbelly. It's the kind of sassy production you could drop on a sun laden Croatian beach and immediately gain a dancefloor's ears. Complementing this is "Margine Call" which sees Newman pair some samples from a test signal record with off kilter disco funk.
