  13. Tic Toc (3:05)
Review: Brian Cullen's Bjak project provides the learned house producer with a chance to reach dizzying, transcendental heights through a hazy, soul and jazz indebted approach as spiritual as it is groove-oriented. Having previously charmed the likes of Deep Explorer and Eargasmic, the debut Bjak album now lands on sympathetic Swiss outpost deepArtSounds, where Cullen will be keeping fine company with the likes of Ron Trent, Above Smoke, Trinidadian Deep and many more. It's a sumptuous listen overflowing with buttery keys, smoky trumpets and expressive, organic rhythms to get all true-school deep house heads nodding with approval. Just check the beatbox flow of "Groove Train" with its canny fusion of ear-catching sampling and accomplished musicianship.

Back 2 Live EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: DAS 022CE. Rel: 03 Apr 18
Deep House
  1. Love Mystery (Of Love #2)
  2. 9 Lives
  3. Confused House
Review: deepArtSounds may be a sublabel of Moto Music, but it's achieved so much on its own terms over the past decade. Now Joe Lewis is joining the esteemed ranks of the label with even more experience behind him - he was recording for the likes of Relief Records and Peacefrog way back when. It's no secret when you listen to his jams on Back 2 Live, where rugged and raw synth lines sit atop tough machine beats. "Love Mystery" is plenty tender where it counts, but "9 Lives" and "Confused House" head towards a rougher end goal for the nastier kind of party.

  5. Express Yourself (5:47)
Review: Running and pushing the boundaries with his versatile musical skills, Giovanni Damico aka Ron Juan tends to be a hard worker. The fact that his musical journey started well about 15 years ago, Giovanni has released top notch records on labels that bring resonance in today's industry such as Star Creature, Lumberjacks in Hell, Bordello A Parigi and swiss boutique label deepArtSounds. His latest piece of work is a five track, afro funk influenced mini Album entitled "Express Yourself". It's an eclectic journey thru Giovanni's deep mind and thru his huge collection of synths and instruments.

  1. Submission (6:03)
  2. Longing (5:07)
  3. Chase The Darkness (4:01)
  4. Building Myth (7:00)
  5. Once Upon A Time (2:10)
  6. Longing (Allstarr Motomusic remix) (5:58)
Review: The deepArtSounds label welcome the mighty Jenifa Mayanja to their label to bring some East Coast deepness to a label with a strong track record in the house domain. Mayanja is captivating on "Submission", a balmy trip as playful as it is restrained. "Longing" brings in a distinct soul focus, with gorgeous vocals and tinkling keys swirling in the mix together. "Chase The Darkness" shakes things up with crooked percussion and a catchy lead. "Building Myth" kicks the B-side off in truly spiritual fashion, riding a drum roll to die for and peppering the track with splashes of horns and an inspiring speech. "Once Upon A Time" cools things down with a spaced out downtempo offering, setting the scene perfectly for Allstarr Motomusic to create a sublime deep techno version of "Longing".

Review: Anthony Nicholson is something of an unheralded hero. He's been releasing variations on melodious, soul-flecked deep house since the turn of the 1990s, delivering material for such labels as Prescription, NIte Grooves and Peacefrog. 22 years after releasing his first 12", Nicholson returns to action with Four, his first albium since 2011. It's a sensual and atmospheric set packed with musically expansive material. While rooted in house, it offers so much more than simple, functional dancefloor material. It will no doubt draw comparisons with the work of Ron Trent, to whom Nicholson shares an impressive attention to detail and positive musical outlook.

  2. Imagine (feat William Kurk) (6:50)

  6. Discojazzfunkdelite (8:13)
  7. Under Your Spell (feat Chestor Gregory) (6:39)
  8. Gravitation (9:01)
Review: Since meeting, and subsequently working with, Ron Trent in the early 1990s, Anthony Nicholson has produced some seriously sublime deep house. These days, his releases are less frequent than many would wish, but retain the kind of high quality threshold associated with the very best house producers. Gravity is his fifth full-length, and delivers a swathe of gorgeously rich and musically expansive tracks shot through with serious amounts of soul. While he rarely strays from the dancefloor, tracks are layered with delicious musical flourishes - twinkling piano playing, live percussion, guitars and bass, for starters - while you'll a range of complimentary influences (African rhythms, modern soul, jazz-funk, boogie, and so on). In other words, it's a proper, grown-up house album.

Deeper Than It Sounds (140 gram vinyl 2xLP)
Cat: DAS 024LP. Rel: 18 Feb 19
Deep House
  1. What's That Bass (6:41)
  2. Dusty Guitar (4:47)
  3. Free (feat Janelle Pulo) (6:21)
  4. Romance (6:02)
  5. Voyage (5:59)
  6. Night Smoke (6:28)
  7. Illusions (6:46)
  8. Overdriven (5:41)
Review: The deepArtSounds label goes from strength to strength as it searches out the deepest operators in the contemporary house music scene. Melchior Sultana last appeared on the label alongside Deep88, but here he delivers an album of purely solo material (well, apart from Janelle Pulo's vocal turn on "Free"). There's a consitent smoky ambience across the eight tracks on offer here, but each individual piece has its own characteristics, from the melancholic synth meanderings of "Dusty Guitar" to the Detroit-tinted machine soul of "Romance". There's not a duff moment on here, making it an album you can sink into for the start-to-finish trip, or a useful collection of refined deep house cuts to fit into any set with ease.
