Minimal/Tech House
Midnight Groove
Easy Gold
Walkman
Direct Disko
Review: Sounds label continues to impress with its reissues, and this release from 1998 is no exception. Kicking off with 'Midnight Groove' on Side-A, the track offers a minimal beat layered with a warehouse-style funk and the signature filtered house sound that defined the era. Its smooth yet gritty feel brings back the vibes of late-night warehouse parties. Following that, 'Easy Gold' brings a more upbeat, tech-house vibe. With clean production and a funky edge, this track is catchy and radiates a feel-good energy, perfect for those who love a solid, uptempo groove. On Side-B, 'Walkman' offers a nod to 80s electro funk, infusing the release with a nostalgic touch while still feeling fresh and funky. The veteran producer brings a depth and precision to this track, highlighting his experience in the genre. Closing out the release, 'Direct Disko' unleashes a dynamic, ravey energy, packed with high-octane tech house elements that propel the track forward. This reissue encapsulates the golden era of 90s house while remaining timeless.

Review: Chicago great Boo Williams has not had the best of times of late, with various health scares leaving him bed-bound and in need of financial assistance to pay costly medical bills. No doubt royalties from the sale of this EP - a reissue of the long-serving deep house producer's 1999 Nuclear Transit EP - will help. Of course, it's an EP that is well worth adding to your collection regardless of Williams' issues. Opener 'Trance Fusion', for example, is one of his most hypnotic, warm and tactile tracks to date while 'No Man's Land' offers a more electronic-sounding slab of locked-in headiness. Elsewhere, 'Teckno Drome' sees Williams join the dots between chunky deep house and the star-lit futurism of Motor City dance music, while 'Tree of Life' is a gorgeous trip into spacey deep house positivity.

The first instalment features a remastered version of the iconic 'Flying Saucer,' a tune that has been a staple at Fabric over the years, plus an unreleased dub version that has never been heard before. Review: 'A Few & Far Between' is an ongoing, multi-part reissue series from the cultured folks at Sushitech as part of the label's 20th birthday celebrations. It features music by pioneering London tech house collective Housey Doingz which has been pulled from their archives and remastered for the occasion. his volume features the much sought-after and timeless 'Without You' which is a perfect example of how this outfit blended the soul of house with the drive of techno into something both physical yet emotive, all driven by 303 basslines. Fonki (dub)
Review: Sushitech's celebration of the superb London tech house collective Housey Doingz continues as part of their own 20th anniversary year. This time they again dig into the archives to reissue a remastered version of 'Fonki' which is yet another hard-to-find Housey Doingz original that first came on Surreal. It's a perfectly dubbed-out sound with plump kicks and cavernous sub-bass but does not lack any bite and drive, which is why it is so loved by the heads. Flip it over for an ever more dubby dub version. Another vital pick-up for OG tech house fans.

Review: Legendary Chicago imprint TRAX Records continues to celebrate its 40th birthday, and with it four decades since the earliest house records appeared in Windy City record stores. On this second volume in their celebratory EP series, curator Jorge showcases some of his favourite cuts from the label vaults. First up on side A is Stylophonic's 'Jack It Up', a fine combination of thickset bottom-end and expansive piano solos. It's followed by a stone-cold Windy City classic - Armando's tough 1992 acid-and-organs workout, 'Love In Heart' (originally credited to New World Order, fact fans). Over on the reverse, we're treated to the hands-in-the-air piano house nostalgia of Mark Row and Jame Starck's 'Free Your Mind' and Paul Johnson's superb 2002 disco-house roller, 'Follow This Beat'.

Review: David Morales made a lot of great house records in the 1990s, but few were quite as commercially successful as 1998's 'Needin' U', a gargantuan disco-house slammer that made liberal use of elements from classic tracks by the Chi-Lites and Rare Pleasure. On this Groove Records reissue, the 'Original Mistake' version - the familiar, filter-heavy disco-house looper that formed the basis of the radio edit - is joined by what many believe is the greatest mix, the 'Boss Anthem' take. Strangely omitted from the UK release in 1998, it's ten minutes of tough, DJ Sneak-inspired drums, restless piano stabs, righteous disco samples and oodles of energy. It's undoubtedly one of the best disco-house slammers ever made and more than worthy of a place in your collection.

Review: A powerful tribute to the seminal sound of Berlin's dub techno pioneers Basic Channel when Soma released it in 1995, this deep, timeless techno track from Glasgow's MacKinnon's has grown in reputation over the last 30 years. Side-A, 'X Trak 1', delivers an epic journey of fast, dark techno that pulsates with energy, perfect for the dancefloor. The track's transcendent melody echoes the spirit of classic rave nights, creating a rich atmosphere that is both intense and deep. Side 2, 'X Trak 2', adds big chord stabs and a stomping rhythm, offering a more driving and forceful techno experience. The track's power and energy shine through, as it channels the same minimalist yet emotional vibe that made this sound so iconic. This reissue celebrates a hidden gem that has gained cult status over time.

Review: With its distinctive cherries logo and long association with the White Isle - that's Ibiza, rather than the one off the coast of Portsmouth - Pacha remains one of Ibiza's most celebrated clubs - decades after it opened its doors. While the musical menu on offer has of course subtly changed over the years, it has always championed house music - as this celebratory collection of club classics that have rocked the dancefloor proves. As you'd expect, it is heavy on 90s and early 2000s anthems, from Pete Heller's late-90s disco-lopper 'Big Love' and Soul Central's piano solo-heavy re-make of Derrick May gem 'Strings of Life', to Dennis Ferrer's pleasingly low-slung and funky rework of Fish Go Deep's 'The Cure and the Cause', and Kings of Tomorrow's end-of-night singalong 'Finally'. There are a few more recent cuts on show too, including Camelphat & Elderbrook's 'Cola' and Solomun's celebrated vocal remix of Noir & Haze's 'Around'.

A genuine house pioneer, he continues to shape the genre while staying mighty true to the scene's roots. And it's fair to say there aren't many out there making more authentic house music than this veteran US producer. Closing things out is 'The Dark One', a deep and driving cut built for the floor, with its dramatic string stabs and searing synths.

Review: A cornerstone of early 90s electronic music, Orbital's Lush resurfaces with renewed energy through the Orbital LEDs reissue campaign. Originally released in 1993, the EP is a masterclass in melodic techno, featuring the iconic 'Lush 3-1' and 'Lush 3-2', two seamlessly interwoven tracks that exemplify the Hartnoll brothers' knack for crafting emotionally resonant, rhythmically complex soundscapes. Reissued on 12" with striking new artwork by Intro, this edition includes heavyweight remixes by Underworld and CJ Bolland, whose reworks push the tracks deeper into the club stratosphere. Underworld brings a dense, propulsive momentum, while Bolland injects a sleek, hard-edged urgency. Yet it's Orbital's originals that remain the centerpiece. Those epic gliding arpeggios, layered synths and rolling percussion conjure both introspection and euphoria. A vital part of their Brown Album, Lush helped define the progressive techno movement, influencing generations of producers. Three decades on, the tracks still pulse with a timeless vibrancy.

Review: Originally pressed in 1997 on Manchester's Pleasure Records, this reissue of James Zeiter's 'Spacer IV' EP marks a detour from his dub-techno calling card into richer house-rooted terrain. A pivotal figure with deep ties to trance, ambient and the deeper ends of techno, Zeiter's work here sheds the fog of his more monolithic material, turning instead to emotional clarity and rhythmic warmth. 'Sirocco' is the opener and the standoutia halcyon blend of dubbed-out breaks and airy pads that drift and glimmer above a slow-motion acid line. 'Mono' edges further into house, with its loopy Detroit swing and sunset-kissed bassline nodding gently to Italian dream house. On the flip, 'Jetson' steps back into more familiar, trance-inflected territory: spacious, hypnotic and driven by crisp, propulsive drums. 'Dust' closes the set with writhing acid lines and spaced-out FX, balancing tension and lift with Zeiter's signature restraint. All four cuts, originally sequenced with just an Akai S950, ESQ-1 and a Novation Bass Station, still sound uniquely vitalimelodic but unshowy, club-focused but never rigid. Slush's remaster preserves the nuance while the full-fat 2x12" format gives these deep cuts the dynamic range they deserve. A stunning archival rescue from a true underground operator.

He is a master of cooking up delightful loops and deploying them to perfection so that you cannot help but get swept up and taken along for a ride. 'Contact' kicks off here with his signature drums and jazzy melodies that bring a playful edge. 'Low Down' brings funky bass wiggles and disco styled percussion and 'Fade Away' lands with a heavy, sweaty throb while the Philly disco strings add a touch of class. 'Night Chaser' shuts down with a more introspective feel and some emotive chords that heighten the last night mood.

Review: Roy Davis Jr, a staple of Chicago's house scene, partners with Jay Juniel for a reissue that encapsulates the raw energy of late '90s underground house. Originally released in 1997, this remastered edition brings new life to the gritty, soulful rhythms that first defined the era. Davis, known for his iconic track 'Gabriel', layers deep bass and atmospheric textures, while Juniel's experimental edge infuses the tracks with an unpredictable twist. Opening with 'Transition', a steady groove builds to 'Musical Sense', where spoken word and complex beats converge. On the flip, 'Funktion' and 'Digital Rhythm' hit with infectious basslines and high-octane energy. The remaster gives the original its due clarity while preserving the essence of Chicago house's emotional depth. This reissue isn't just a nod to the past, but also a reminder of why this sound still dominates dancefloors today.

As it did first time around, the EP contains four contrasting versions of 'Jazz Ascension'. The EP-opening 'Red Soul Mix' lives up to its name by wrapping breezy flutes, syynths, pianos and spoken word samples around a bumpin' bassline and classic-sounding US deep house beats, whilst the 'Red Dub' delivers a stripped-back and groove-focused take on the same musically expansive mix. Over on side two, the slightly darker and more bass-heavy 'Hard Dub' compares favourably to the then contemporaneous work of fellow Washington, D.C-duo Deep Dish. A handy, spoken word 'Washapella' rounds of an essential reissue.

Big Dick - Mutha Fucka (Drum mix) (6:30)
Review: This isn't an EP of house tracks crafted in the mid 1990s by the late member of the royal family, but rather a dive into the back catalogue of New Jersey producer Heeley Calator of SMACK Productions fame. In keeping with much of Heeley's work, the four tracks on show (all originally released in 1994) are undeniably X-rated and full of sexually-charged vocals. Check first the 'Instru-Beat' mix of 'Whose Dick Is This', a rolling, low-slung and lightly soulful garage-house workout, before admiring the warmer, dreamier and jazzier 'What's My Name (The Tribe & Friends Mix)'. Over on the flip, WOLF has served up two takes on 'Big Dick - Mutha F*cka': the percussively dense, organ-rich New Jersey garage heaviness of the 'Sample Mix' and the stripped-back tribal house headiness of the 'Drum Mix'.

The Masters At Work (Keep It Comin' Now) (LP version) (4:21)
Review: Rather significant as old-school house releases go, the chain of influences behind Masters At Work’s ’The Masters At Work (Keep It Comin’ Now)’ is an elusive one. In 1991, Louie Vega and Marc Antony remixed new jack swing titan Keith Sweat’s own ‘Keep It Comin’, a timeless B3 side to round out Sweat’s original Elektra Records release. The track was a snowballer indeed, as it evolved into a standalone B-side in its own right, complementing the garage house classic release ‘Ride On The Rhythm’ on Atlantic Records. Now promoted once again to an A-side, we hear three new and exclusive mixes of thee original dub as well as two variations: Latinesque backing fills and programmable melodics twaddle away in the background of One Take Tito’s mix, while Kenlou and Eddie Mood bring twin yogic, myofibril relaxations to an already contracted sound.

Luv 4 Luv (Stonebridge club mix) (6:06)
Review: Have there been any remixes that have been more impactful and influential than StoneBridge's famous re-rub of Robin-S's 'Show Me Love'? An enormous crossover hit when it was first released in 1990, the track's blend of bold organ hooks, bumpin' beats, dreamy chords and big vocals later helped inspired the birth of what was then known as 'bassline house' or 'northern garage'. As this reissue proves, it remains a timeless dance anthem that transcends genre. This time round, it comes backed by a lesser-celebrated StoneBridge rework of another Robin-S track, 'Luv For Luv'. This is a bit deeper and sweeter, but mostly utilises the same musical ingredients (gravelly stabs, Korg M-1 organ lines, lush pads and so on).

Review: Inner City's time on Network Records produced a run of timeless recordings that merged their signature vocal soul with the underground grooves of Detroit. This reissue of 'Ahnonghay' highlights that early golden era and finds the legendary Kevin Saunderson return to his techno roots in some style. The tune was originally released under his seminal Reese alias and marries that raw Motor City energy with sleek electronica that embodies the early techno blueprint. This 12" pressing includes the original mix alongside two standout remixes: Carl Craig's atmospheric reimagining and Dave Clarke's gritty UK techno take. All in all, a vital snapshot of techno's early evolution.

Review: Swayzak's role in establishing minimal makes them one of the scene's greats. Their meticulously compiled discography has many treasures, and plenty of them are hard to find and expensive. That has long been the case with this EP, originally from 1998, but now reissued by the back-cat boffins at Rawax. 'Lokal' has it all across 11 immersive minutes, from the deft, loopy drum programming that floats above the floor to the wispy and synthetic melodies and churning synth hooks. 'Yardarm' is another majestic minimal symphony, though this one hits a little harder and might well be the best of the two because of it. It's a perfect mix of dreamy mental escape and irresistible body music for the wee-small hours.

Review: From Chicago to New York via the UK, Freedom Party rack up mega phono-mileage on this retrotextual deep house steamer. The label have set foot on this bold, folk artistic sound-quest since 2023, when the first V/A emerged amid black-and-yellow steams of equably danceable produces from in-house charcutiers Look Once, Mederic Nebinger and Steal Vybe. Now a completely fresh crew is welcomed aboard, with just three new mates added to the original four: Vick Lavender deals in impossible erotism on the long out-of-press vocal jam 'The LOVE Song', with anachronistic beat tech and sampled, 1930s-feel vocals. Funkey Munkey follows up with 'Make Me Feel It', an ambitious retro-rave sound-splay, and In House Ii offers to take us home on 'Love To Love You', a sultrier refit of an all-time-classic, Donna Summer surestarter.

Review: New York's Joe Claussell offers three blistering takes on 'So In Love' by Black Rascals, the early 90s project from Blaze. This red-label 7" is a pricey one, but the contents justify it: deep house from the source, reworked by one of its most spiritual selectors. 'Rough Mix 1' leans into swirling vocal loops and expansive FX, full of Claussell's signature dynamics, while 'Rough Mix 2' dials back the drama slightly for something more floor-focused. Flip it for 'Drums', a stripped-down tool that reimagines the track as raw percussive hypnosis. Essential NY house lineage, revived in style and pressed loud-just don't expect it to hang around.

That's the case here, as the French deep house label offers a new edited - pressed to striking pink marbled wax - of Analog Trks Vol 1, a 1997 EP from former Prescription Records artist Abacus (real name Austin Bascom). Review: There are two kinds of house-hunting. The first and most popular kind is unfortunately the one that scams unsuspecting people out of their money for the basic human right that is shelter. The other kind, however, is much more enjoyable - it involves scouring the internet or local record shops for the genre of music known as house music. Kerri Chandler is our favourite estate agent (words we never thought would escape our lips) in this regard; his latest EP series 'Lost & Found' is sure to help you remember the joy of the latter kind, and forget the former. Dubby and soft pulsers like 'Fluff Rehab' are futuristic bouncers for the highfaluting ear, replete with rapid-delayed spring noises and ruff chord stabs. Ensuers 'What If', 'Who Are You' and 'Dem Joy Ride' are pure and nigh-perfect deep house ruminators, and all are lifted from Chandler's coveted archive.

Review: There's a reason that Future Sound of London's 1991 debut single, 'Papua New Guinea', is periodically reissued: it's a stone-cold classic that sounds unlike anything else. In its original mix form, the track combines traits borrowed from early breakbeat hardcore (booming bass, house-tempo breakbeats) with saucer-eyed vocal samples, twinkling pianos and sounds more often found in ambient house and chill-out tunes from the period. This remastered, hand-numbered vinyl reissue boasts all of the 1992 remixes (as well as the original mix), including a suitably psychedelic, tribal-tinged Andrew Weatherall revision, the duo's own spaced-out ambient style 'Dub' mix, and a sax-sporting Manchester re-wire courtesy of 808 State's Graham Massey.

Review: Italian house didn't need the glitz of Ibiza or the muscle of Chicago and Detroit. It carved out its own spaceismoky, dreamlike, and effortlessly cool. This collection captures the full spectrum of that golden era, from the hypnotic tribal rhythms of Progetto Tribale's 'The Sweep' to the shimmering, euphoric synths of Onirico's 'Echo'. There's the deep, rolling pulse of Don Carlos' 'Boy', the jazz-infused elegance of Lady Bird's 'Jazzy Doll (Odyssey Dub)', and the raw energy of Green Baize's 'Synthetic Rhythm'. Elsewhere, 'Titanic' by Mato Grosso offers an atmospheric voyage, while 'The True Underground Sound of Rome' delivers deep, sophisticated grooves. These weren't just club tracks; they were portals to another world. Whether it was the funky shuffle of Alex Neri's 'The Wizard', the soulful pianos of Carol Bailey's 'Understand Me (Free Your Mind)', or the after-hours pulse of MCJ's 'Sexitivity', this was music made by studio obsessives who understood that house wasn't just a soundiit was a feeling. Underground, inventive, and deeply emotional, this collection is a snapshot of an era where the Italian touch brought warmth, sensuality and an undeniable groove to dancefloors worldwide.

Review: UK label Rezpektiva unearths another gem from the archives, this time shining a light on Fade 2 End, the elusive duo of Nick Woolfson and Mark Shimmon. Their output may have been limitedijust two releases in 1996ibut what they left behind is a masterclass in deep, rolling, late-night techno. 'Sundance' sets the tone with its undulating rhythms and hypnotic loops, while 'The Passage' weaves together tough beats and drifting synth lines. 'Dreams' and 'Daze' lock into a mesmerising groove, all heady atmospherics and resonant grooves. On the flip, 'Another Day' and 'Another Night' explore the contrast between euphoria and tension, their hypnotic vocals pulling the listener deeper into the groove. 'Feel The Magic' rounds things off with a shimmering, dreamlike quality, balancing lush pads with crisp drum programming. Fade 2 End had a rare touchitracks that feel alive, shifting and evolving as they play out. Now, thanks to Rezpektiva, these lost classics finally get the attention they deserve.

Should it not be in your collection already (and it should be), Large Music has decided to re-master and re-press the original 1996 12". Review: Fronted by Dane-dame Sannie Carlson, Whigfield was backed by various producers and engineers over the years, main among whom was the towering Larry Pignagnoli. *The* song to commemorate Whigfield by, 'Saturday Night' is a Europop and Eurodance trailblazer, harking back, perhaps, to a more glamorous time, where fashion designers rubbed shoulders with models, PR girls and riviera DJs for Italian and Danish upper crusts. Carlson would record 'Saturday Night' after meeting fellow DJ Davide Riva, who was also part of a music production duo. In three days, an (in your mind-) sticky, bubblegum-popping opus would be written, with a nursery-rhyming refrain and a jaunty na-na-na hook epitomising the notion of a "hair-dryer song", a term coined by Simon Cowell in reference to the song as a precursor to Rebecca Black's 'Friday': "the kind of song girls sing into their hair dryers before getting ready to go out."

Now, decades on, he is back with a follow-up of sorts in the form of 'House Music Dos (Doin' It House Style.' He first burst through with a couple of bleep-influenced anthems as Cyclone, but his biggest club smash was actually 'Break of Dawn' as Rhythm On The Loose - a killer, piano-sporting, saucer-eyed breakbeat house number that made great use of vocal samples from First Choice disco classic 'Let No Man Put Asunder'.
