Review: Veteran northern duo Autechre, long associated with the most fractured corners of electronic music, offer something unexpectedly generous and inviting here. It's a new release that feels looser, more exploratory i less about total deconstruction and more about spontaneous sketching. Tracks are shorter, often playful, but never throwaway. 'Altibzz' and 'Rale' shimmer with impressionistic calm, while the stuttering mechanics of 'The Plc' and 'Tankakern' reveal a groove-minded touch that leans into early hip-hop and electro without ever mimicking it. There's real warmth to the sequencing too. Ideas emerge, recede and reappear with fluidity, allowing moments like 'Paralel Suns' or 'Notwo' to hit with emotional weight on repeat listens. For a group known for density and abstraction, this feels unusually personal. The production is still meticulous, of course: fine-grained details in the percussion, depth in the spatial design, layers that unfold slowly over time. Autechre haven't gone soft i they've just made space. And in doing so, they've created something genuinely moving. It's a joy to hear two artists so synonymous with machine complexity turn towards something more human, more intuitive and arguably more lasting.

Review: Pete Blaker has been making head-turning (or rather head-nodding) moves of late and he continues his run of form on the excellently named Funkyjaws Music label. This fourth instalment in the Discolifting series kicks off with 'Zulu', a nice fat-bottomed and dubby Afro disco sound with a super sweet vocal and some funky guitar riffs. 'Instrumental' then steps out with more widescreen synths and snappy low ends with more than a hint of 'Bakerman' groove goodness. 'See The Light' is lavish and bright disco with 80s synths and 'Heaven' closes with a more subdued and introspective sound.

Review: Under the Tuxedo alias, Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One have been giddily exploring their mutual love of West Coast synth-funk, boogie and early 80s disco for the best part of a decade. Much of that - including a quartet of must-have albums - has appeared via Los Angeles' Stones Throw Records. Here they make a rare appearance on another imprint - Japan's Lawson Entertainment to be exact - with a surprise cover of a British boogie gem from the early 80s - Intrigue's sought-after 'I Like It (Money Crazy)'. Their take is respectful to the original but altogether more polished, sparkling and colourful, with Hawthorne providing a typically impressive lead vocal. On the flip, they get a little more down and dirty in an L.A synth-funk style, alongside Not So Bad, on original number 'Always'. In a word: essential!

Review: Waves Within is a genre-blending triumph from Mexican producers Luca Ferrand and Selva in which they serve up sounds that evolve through deep house, broken beat, jazz, nu-disco and hip-hop. Opener 'Bona Fide' pairs dusty jazz and disco-house with a slick hip-hop switch and some superbly sunny melodies. 'Zarapes (After the Rain)' marries Mexican folk and broken beat, then 'Back To That Thang' twists jazz guitar into a genre-fluid ride and the title track evokes tropical 90s house. Closer 'Lynx' is a shapeshifting house cut with bulbous bass and sophisticated sound design that really brings it to life.

Review: In fitting fashion for Sault, we've another surprise LP on our hands from the Inflo and Cleo Sol led collective. Sault's revolving door format is heard again in full saloon swing, doubling down on their knockout combo of elusiveness (every track title is an initialism) and creative spontaneity. Coming after a prolific but unconventional run - 2022 offered five albums made freely available for only five days - 10 indicates a return to a tighter focus, not abandoning the phonic plexuses and political undertones that have defined their work so far. Best on the record is the nymphlike, god fearing gospel jam 'L.U.' and the sculpted G-P-funk of 'K.T.Y.W.S.'

'AAA001A' is a wicked mix of synthetic and organic sound - a heartfelt male vocal and new age flutes, sci-fi melodies and bubbly drums all coalesce into a hypnotic roller, then 'BBB001B' picks up the pace with a smattering of silvery toms and snares over dubby beats. Review: Wax Digits hits release number five with a tight and tidy two-tracker from the late veteran Robert Ouimet who passed a couple of years ago. Before then he cooked up these gems with his pal and production partner Dave Godin. They are being released as a tribute to the memory of Ouimet and a fine one they are too. 'Plenty' has a raw groove and big chords with jangling guitars adding hints of melancholy that counter the big stabs. Soulful vocals are a great finishing touch then 'Funky Together' is more loose and strident with big horns leading the way under psyched-out chords. Two quality party starters.

Review: There is a great backstory to Darryl Baalki. We don't know how true it is, if at all, but it goes something like this: he is an enigmatic figure raised alone by his mother, his only connection to the outside world was his father's record collection. As a child, he believed this collection contained all the music ever created. Convinced that new music could only emerge by reassembling its parts, he obsessively listened, memorised, and mentally reconstructed sound before making new compositions from existing pieces. This is his latest missive and it is deeply moving, from the percussive jumble of the opener to the earthy shuffle and seductive sax of 'Devil May Care' via the hypnotising trumpet leads of 'Nothing Will Break You'. Fans of Mo Kolours et all will love this.

This one was inspired by a night spent dancing at a club in Osaka during their 2005 Japan tour and arms with a smooth groove. Review: The classy house heads at B2 Recordings hand things over to Those Guys From Athens for another quartet of silky sounds. 'Triple Double' kicks off with nice lazy drums and sparkling synths that are perfect for early evening warming up. 'Father's Groove' gets more lively with some steely drums macing away beneath loose percussion and 'They Couldn't Stop Me' then gets dee with smeared vocal sounds and hip-swinging drums. Lastly, 'Never Been In Chicago' plays with filters and gently swaying groves to lull you into a reverie. These work on the heart and head as much as heel.

Review: Funk Machine marks a second release on Big Baba Record for Edaldo who goes big with four electrifying tracks that are perfectly tooled for open-air and summer dancefloors. The title cut brings big, bright, bold disco-house anthem vibes with full-throttle vocals and piano stand, 'People' has a more Italo-disco vibe with an infectious vocal hook and nice retro bassline and 'Jah Noon' is a club-ready remix of a rare Yemeni groove that melts disco and indie-dance with an oriental twist. Last of all is the acid-infused Kwaito cut 'Johna' with classic cowbells and snaking bass. These are big tunes but they don't lack class.

Review: Born and raised in Chicago, Durty Truth Records founder Darryn Jones frequently swims in similar musical waters to his friend and Windy City contemporary Rahaan. It's little surprise then to find him pop up on North-East England re-edit imprint Hot Biscuit Recordings, an outlet that has been releasing Rahaan reworks for several years. A-side 'In The Bush' is a thrillingly heavyweight jam - an Afro-funk meets Afro-disco version of a track made famous by US disco and boogie outfits, which Jones has expertly extended and rearranged in all the right places. B-side 'In The Know', meanwhile, is a take on a more classic-sounding slab of Afro-disco that boasts a superb "walking bassline", extended electric piano solos, sultry strings and a fine male lead vocal.

Review: American organist Charles Kynard's 1972 session for Mainstream Records is reissued here with remastered audio and its original gatefold artwork. Recorded in Los Angeles with a core group of seasoned session players i including Chuck Rainey, Paul Humphrey and Arthur Adams i the nine tracks centre on groove-based jazz-funk anchored by Kynard's Hammond lines. 'Little Ghetto Boy' opens with slow phrasing and a blues-inflected feel. 'Hot Sauce' and 'Lime Twig' push into tighter rhythm section interplay, driven by Fender bass and clipped guitar. 'Slop Jar' and 'Rock Steady' lean heavier into funk structures, while 'Name The Missing Word' brings in sharper horn charts. 'The First Time Ever (I Saw Your Face)' and 'Shout' stretch the dynamic range, the former subdued and the latter more direct. Bonus track 'Smiling Faces Sometimes', featuring Carol Kaye on bass, closes the set with a looser swing and more open arrangement. Nothing here feels overplayed i the focus remains on tone and ensemble feel. It's a clean, unfussy reissue of a record that prioritises groove over soloing, now restored with clarity but no added polish.

Review: For the latest offshoot of his ongoing 'unofficial edits and overdubs' rework project, New York house/disco mainstay Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell has decided to turn his hand to "African classics', delivering what he describes as "psychedelic takes". On this EP, the first of two, the Body & Soul NYC resident offers up extended revisions of a quartet of cuts. He begins with 'New Africa', wrapping a gorgeous sand gently soulful vocal workout in spacey synths and layers of spiritual house percussion, before upping the tempo on the breathless and brilliant 'Griot Ba'. His love of deep, dubby basslines, restless percussion and delay-laden vocal snippets comes to the fore on EP highlight 'The Ya Yo People', whjle 'Drum Sore' - a version of what sounds like an early to mid 1980s number - very much lives up to its name.

Review: Auckland-born, London-based duo Manuel Darquart draw from the silkier ends of Italo, house and Balearic breaks on their latest five-tracker for Munich label Permanent Vacation. The opener, 'Sunshine Coast', cruises through airy pads and FM piano with the warmth of a lost VHS holiday clip, while 'Soft Energy' folds ambient textures into a weightless groove built for sunrise slots. Things get tougher on 'Global Business', which hits a sweet spot between acid and electro-funk, and 'Fantacity' continues in a similar mode - dense but clean, with a breaksy snap underlining the chords. 'Forza' wraps it all up with a slow-builder that sits somewhere between high-definition trance and plush downtempo. The palette feels nostalgically late 80s, but there's no pastiche here - just a well-gauged, detail-rich record that knows exactly when to lean in and when to hold back.

Review: Renato Cohen has been kicking out jams of all shapes and sizes for many years, but this new outing on French house classicists Skylax amounts to some of his best work in ages. 'Roaring' is a disco-tech cut with dazzling arps loping in sugar, pixelated circles over the striking beats. 'We Desert' then gets more loose with synths spraying about with a mind of their own and plenty of cosmic colour. On the flip, the open gets reworked twice, first into a more heads down and bendy acid workout for the afters and also as a hands-in-the-air piano Balearic classic.

Review: Jolene Cuts stitches together the past and future of French Touch with a series of deft, filter-drenched cuts that pulse with groove and nostalgia. This vinyl-only release distills the essence of the genre, but rather than simply rehashing the well-worn tropes of disco loops and sweeping filters, Danny and Mike manipulate texture and space, creating something that feels alive in the moment. 'Santa' oozes with hazy warmth, its rolling bassline and clipped vocal chops pulling dancers into a deep, hypnotic sway. 'Clear' strips things back to their rawest elementsithudding kick, shimmering chords, and just enough swing to keep bodies locked in. The jittery pulse of 'Expresso' flirts with urgency, teasing out its rhythmic tension before releasing it in waves. On the flip, 'Salsa' stretches Latin percussion into a woozy, off-kilter groove, while 'Do It' harnesses call-and-response vocal snippets to build anticipation before dropping into a groove so thick it practically melts into the speakers. It's a masterclass in movementifluid, tactile, and designed for those who know that house music is as much about feeling as it is about sound.

Review: Body & Soul NYC resident Joaquin 'Joe' Clausell has launched a new series, 'Iboga' - an extension of his 'unofficial edits and overdubs' project focused on "psychedelic takes" on "African classics". He begins EP number two with 'Abuja Rough', a rolling, lightly housed-up take on a lesser-known mid-80s Afro-synth-pop number, before ratcheting up the tempo, intensity and percussive pressure on 'Summer Africa'. He successfully straightens out and beefs up an organ-rich Afronbeat workoput on 'People', while standout 'Afrikan Basement' is a lightly dubbed-out chunk of densely percussive Afro-house topped off with effects-laden vocals and sax solos.

Review: Durand Jones, Aaron Frazer and Blake Rhein return with Flowers, their fourth album, revisiting the same raw, budding energy that first plotted them together in a Bloomington basement. Embracing a back-to-basics approach, and echoing the collaborative spirit of their 2016 debut, this self-produced LP took shape at Rhein's Chicago home studio, with many tunes edified from one-take demos, capturing a no-frills but beautifully petaled synergy between the trio. Flowers' 11 phases lean into a refined, yet playful blend of soul-disco, exuding a smooth, homegrown, sexologic vibe, like an aphrodisiac planter hung from the dashboard as we embark on a late night drive. "All of these songs touch on such mature topics, things that we never got to sing about before," says Jones. A right blossoming indeed.

Review: Two long-overlooked cuts from New Jersey funk legends Kool & the Gang finally land on 7", pulled from a lesser-known chapter in their prolific catalogue. 'Rated X' is the clear highlight: a blistering, brass-soaked club weapon that's been doing damage on the right dancefloors for years, now finally pressed to 45rpm. Its groove is taut, funky and unfiltered, showing the group's rawest instincts before the crossover polish of later records. Flip it for 'North East South West', a looser, sun-streaked number built on syncopated horns and low-slung rhythm guitar-a snapshot of Kool & the Gang in full livewire form. Both tracks come from a time when the band were stretching funk's parameters, fusing tight musicianship with unrelenting energy. This release nails that moment perfectly - and it's a gift to have them cut for selectors at last.

Review: It would be fair to say that Rahaan's Chicago Club Culture series, which here reaches its second instalment, is something of a passion project, inspired as it is by - in his words - "the golden age of Chicago club culture". Our reading of that is the 1970s and 80s, with all of the tracks on show being versions of cuts big on Windy City dancefloors in that period. The double-pack is heavy on tried-and-tested treats, from the expansive, Clavinet-sporting disco rush of 'Do You Like It' and the delay-laden, percussion-heavy brilliance of 'Columbian Dance' (all chanted vocals, punk-funk sax sounds, heavy electronic bass and layered Latin beats), to the crispy and crunchy, Chic-influenced excellence of 'Jealous For No Reason' and the low-down disco hustle of closing cut 'Can't Shake Your Love'.
