Cat: MUTE 621. Rel: 30 Oct 20
Berlin (4:09)
Dirty Boy (3:10)
Review: A Certain Ratio have returned with their most tight and funky album, possibly ever, recently, and it is steeped in 40 years of ACR DNA. Now you can grab two of the standout singles on this fine, limited edition white 7" thanks to Daniel Miller's essential Mute. Opener 'Berlin' is the second single from that album, ACR Loco, and has breezy vocals and Trillin riffs over tight drum work. 'Dirty Boy' is riddled with squelchy synth funk, with popping drums and a great vocal performance that will get any party vibing.

Review: "You never cross the same river twice! Panta Rhei!" Behind this project with the strange name (German for "eel-catch with horse-head") is one Mirko Uhlig from Germany, who had few CDR-releases so far, most of them standing out through their weird surrealistic coloration. In the meantime he's also built his own label Ex Ovo. "Fragment 36" relates to a quote from Heraclites showing that "everything deliquesces" at any moment and can never be the same as one moment before. According to that, Aalfang Mit Pferdekopf's first and last ever 7" creates two drone-minimal pieces with very high dynamics, using watersounds and Glockenspiel, drenched into overtune-feedback-resonances & dark deep drones.

Review: Depending on where you stand, Virgil Abloh is either the ruiner of fashion, or its saviour. The Off-White founder doesn't exactly have a subtle style when it comes to his own brand, but that hasn't stopped him making it to the high profile position of artistic director at Louis Vuitton. He is also more and more involved with music on various levels and that now plays out with his new single with serpentwithfeet. It is presented here on both sides of this Sony 7" following his recent remix of Mercury Award winner Michael Kiwanuka's 'Solid Ground'.

Review: Japanese stars Akiko and Yukihiro Fukutomi came together to cover SADE's anthem several years ago but it now makes its way back to fresh wax courtesy of Record Store Day 2024. They infused it with dark, mysterious jazz and contemporary influences and Akiko's enigmatic vocals intertwine flawlessly with the minimalist arrangement. On the B-side, their original 'let GO' offers a spiritual journey through dub-techno realms where the synergy between Akiko's emotive delivery and Fukutomi's masterful production creates a captivating sound. This release epitomises the pair's creative chemistry and innovative approach to blending diverse musical elements into a seamless, immersive new realm.

Review: Alessandro Alessandroni is a library music legend who set the blueprint for the genre early on and then managed to get even more famous because of providing the iconic whistle on famous spaghetti western 'A Fistful of Dollars'. The influential composer and musician had a big say in the world of soundtracks during the 60s and 70sFour Flies have often released his work or covers of it. The tunes on this 7" are taken from an obscure 1975 Italian film by Elio Bartolini. They walk the thin line between disco and funk and jazz-funk with big horn and rhythm sections. Both might have been lost forever if it weren't for the fact that this label put them on the now modern classic and hard to find compilations Esterno Notte and Esterno Giorno.

10 (Calming Rain For Deep Sleep edit) (5:29)

Bonus (2:01)
Review: Back in 2017, mystery producer The Ambientist offered up two thrillingly retro-futurist EPs that effortlessly joined the dots between ambient, IDM, proto-jungle, ambient techno and dream house. Here, he or she offers up a selection of reworks of tracks from those now sought-after EPs. A-side "10 (Calming Rain For Deep Sleep Edit)" is wonderful: a slow-burn, deep ambient techno number rich in ghostly chords and hushed spoken word samples that reminded us of Biosphere's early work. Over on the flip, label stalwart Rising Sun re-imagines "4 (A Sign Of True Friendship Mix)" as a soul-flecked slab of gently pulsing breakbeat house that's deeper than a Scottish loch and twice as picturesque. "Bonus", a two-minute shuffle through hazy, breakbeat-fired deep house grooves, is also solid.

I Will Survive (4:40)
RNC 2020 (3:13)
Review: RECOMMENDED
The most surprising thing about this staggering 7" is the fact the artist formerly known as Anthony Hegarty hasn't released 'I Will Survive' before. Gloria Gaynor's testament to the strength of the human spirit, and particularly the resilience people call upon when facing a broken heart, has long been an anthem of global queer and counterculture. Anonhi, either as lead singer of rightly lauded Anthony & The Johnsons, or as latter day soloist, is an icon of those same scenes, laying claim to being the only transgender person ever nominated for an Academy Award ('Manta Ray', from the movie Racing Extinction).

The results are everything we could have hoped for, rethinking the disco anthem as an acoustic number equal parts teary-eyed pride and sorrow, Anonhi's famous baritone crying out over strings and guitars. Backed with the frenzied distorted riffs and rage of 'RNC 2020', it's a formidable release.

Windows Of My Mind (remix) (4:56)
Review: The story of this one revolves around San Diego native Anthony "Antone" Williams. He was one day alone in a studio, messing about with the gear and before he knew he it lay down the haunting rhythm that underpins the tune now presented here by the good folks at Athens of the North. It's a sinister, restless one that got released as a hugely limited 7" on Unity Records with otherworldly soul production and a pained vocal up top. Post punk soul, some call it, and that's a fitting descriptor. A remix appears on the flip but the allure of the original is hard to beat.

Kajyadhi Fu Bushi (Visible Cloaks remix) (4:54)
Review: 'Kajyadhi-fu bushi' is actually a Japanese wedding song. It was first written and recorded in 1977 by Jazz man Jun Arasaki and his Nine Sheep collective. They did it in one take - which is the one you hear here - across an array of unusual (at least here in the west) instruments such as five sanshin, four winds, piano, bass, percussion and drums. It's a sombre, slow-motion lullaby that is imbued with subtle joy. Next to the original, a Visible Cloaks remix up the ambient beauty and makes it feel more cosmic and expansive.

Unicorn Rider (4:04)
Review: There's not a lot of information out there about Arcade of Serpe, so let's skip the back story and cut to the chase. If that's really an appropriate turn of phrase here. Nothing about Cave Adventure feels rushed. Nothing. In fact, it's quite the opposite, opening on dub-wise bass and playful organs, the atmosphere - somewhere between lackadaisical, come down, BBQ, and psychedelic - subtly rises, although not to a crescendo as much as a delicate fade out after a few minutes strutting to the funk-laden groove. Flip it to find more explorations in the sonic ether, with 'Unicorn Rider' smoothly stepping out into a surreal track that uses space and emptiness to accentuate the noises that are there, which mirror, if not directly reflect, the opening title tune. It's quiet, but you won't forget it in a hurry.

Review: After much clamour from fans, Four Flies has managed to put together a reissue of this golden bit of sunny Balearic funk. The special 7" marked Azzuro's debut on the label and takes inspiration from the 80s Library scene as much as gentle sunset dances on the Med. It manages to sound retro yet future, with its analogue synth waves and jazz-funk rhythms, catchy pop hooks and warm grooves. After the dance-y opener 'Agip,' comes a more zoned out and horizontal groove with 'Telefono Giallo' while 'Astrotensione' closes on another celestial ambient vibe.

Review: Minimal Wave presents a 4 song 7" EP by legendary German band Bal Pare. The band was formed in 1980 by Kirsten Klemm, Manfred Asmus and Matthias Schuster. Schuster, the brainchild behind the band, is also known for these projects: Geisterfahrer, Im Namen Des Volkes, Jeanette Und Das Land Z, and Das Institut. The four songs were recorded between 1981-1984 and are all previously unreleased. The songs range from really original, danceable dark synth with an early industrial feel to warmer synth pop, the last song featuring Kirsten on vocals. Review: Hailing from Yorkshire, Geoff Bastow made music that took people pretty far away from the White Rose county, out to the cosmic discos of Italy and then onwards towards the stratosphere itself. Half a galaxy away from a part of England known for keeping two feet firmly rooted to the ground, calling spades spades and taking no nonsense from nobody. Often producing under the moniker K.I.D. during the 1980s, and making most of his sounds after relocating to Munich, Germany, Bastow's attention to detail, sense of space and spatiality, gauge of groove and understanding of what makes a dancefloor move cannot be understated. Save your words, though, and skip straight to this EP to explain all that to people - six takes on a stone cold classic.

Review: Who said music has nothing to say these days? In an age of plastic people distracted to the point of distraction from the shocking atrocities, privilege, inequality and prejudices that are frogmarching society into a death trap of a future, Benefits stand out like a beautiful sore thumb - battered, bruised, and British, they are the epitome of an 'issues band' and we welcome any opportunity to listen and write about them.

Like some sort of rabid Idles, here the Middlesbrough one man crew make noises that defy logic, twisted cacophonous bars of ravenous distorted sound, and then layer council estate spoken word over the top. Angry enough to make you feel like there is still hope, and innovative enough to make you wonder whether - in an increasingly risk-averse music industry - enough people will get to know and love them. Make sure you do.

Benoit B - "100%" (4:12)
Candido - "Shaktiman" (4:07)
Review: The latest missive from Benoit B's Banlieue label is a tight double-header in which the boss man takes top billing. His A-side cut "100%" is a sleazy, mind-bending chugger where bleeping electronics, breathy vocal snippets, ghostly lead lines and "clonk"-style percussion hits rise above a sludgy bassline, new beat drums and a filthy bassline. Candido (not the disco-era percussionist, but rather a rising star of German electronic music) handles the B-side, offering up an even darker and sleazier number that joins the dots between EBM and new beat (think stabbing, mutilated vocal samples, machine-gun percussion fills and "Sensoria"-era Cabaret Voltaire bass).

The man behind such seminal releases like 1997's Sub Strata LP presents "Black Mesa" on the A side: a deep and mesmerising IDM cut interspersed with samples from the 1936 film The Pertrified Forest. It was a cover of a Lonnie Liston Smith gem from 1974 that has become a goldmine of samples for hip hop greats like Gang Starr. Black Cash & Theo show off their edit skills with a vision that allows the lush cosmic keys and freeform bass to shine in this stone-cold classic. Review: This heavily limited 7" is released roughly in line with the celebration of Martin Luther King's birthday. The tunes are taken from Joaquin Joe Claussell's much loved Raw Cassette series, and
'Break Free' in particular was produced with the intent of "challenging people (everyone) to wake up and at the very least-give some thought to breaking themselves free from the chains of the mental incarceration, all the while ridding ourselves from the illusion that we reside freely on what many of us ultimately see as a slave plantation." Musically it is dark, intense, involving stuff that layers off-beat jazz keys with a driving deep house beat.

Review: If you've not found yourself enthralled by Bluey, the Australian animated kids series about the anthropomorphic six-year-old Blue Heeler puppy, Bluey, her family, curiosity, energy and imagination, then where have you been for the last seven years? Praised for its razor sharp depiction of modern family life in the Western world, it deftly straddles the line between children's TV and adult comedy, hitting both nails squarely on the head. In Rug Isand, Bluey and Bingo discover that a pack of felt tips can be anything - like a snake, or a campfire, or a banana. A perfect example of the creative minds of youth and heir ability to believe in things that grown ups might struggle with, the fact that Dad needs to engage his inner child and suspend disbelief before the episode ends speaks volumes. In musical terms, think fantastical, dreamy and typically witty instrumentation and spoken word, on record.

The two tracks showcased on this limited-edition "45" date from that period and have never before seen the light of day. Review: Apparently James Adam Brown had one very definitely theme in mind with There Is Space Under Your Seat. Put simply, he wanted to explore aural interpretations of the human desire to create mental breathing room by pausing emotions to process feelings when circumstances become overwhelming. And, let's face it, they frequently have a habit of doing just that.
Recorded at ICP Studios in Belgium, after demos were laid down in his own facility deep in the stunning Yorkshire Dales, it's hard to imagine a more fitting setting for these ideas to form. A place that's equal parts bleak and beautiful, and certainly remote (in UK terms, at least). So what we have here is sometimes eerie, always stunning, packed with spatiality and a tangible emotional quality you will not be able to escape from.

"Sulu Sekou" is a finely woven electronica tale enriched with haunting instrumentation that piles romance and mystery into the endearing pops and fidgets of the homespun rhythm. For this project, they went big and deiced to ask the legendary composer John Carpenter to continue, and much to the bands delight, he did. He flips 'Good Girls' alongside his creative partners Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies into a soaring anthem with sinister and swaggering but crunchy production. Chvrches then return the favour by flipping Carpenter's 'Turning The Bones' into a chilly bit of spacious electronica.

Review: She's the Diva of the Diode, five-time Grammy Awards-nominee for Best New Age Album, and one of America's all-time top synthesising pioneers. If that doesn't tell you almost everything there is to know about Xenon then we're really not sure what will. Ciano is a sound designer, composer, and label executive whose 1970s output was her most commercially successful, but has never backed off from the release schedule, or lost her innovative abilities.

This addition to any Ciani fan's collection is very much everything she's about. Comprising just three tracks, or rather two short tunes and an interlude of just 45-seconds, the best way to describe this is an experiment in descending notes and noises, formed into patterns which slowly present forms of sonic structure. Whether that's warbles or wobbles, bleeps or vocal samples.

Review: Fresh and contemporary intergalactic reissue action from the ridiculously on-point Finders Keepers! For many old-school gamers and general niche nerds, the sounds of the inimitable Atari machines were the foundations of gaming culture. Never strictly available in soundtrack format until now, Suzanne Ciani's shimmering, quasi-techno sounds are the perfect example of the futurism that characterised the 1980s. This particular release features the opening theme and jingles from the Liberator game, which means that the wonderful Finders Keepers could certainly be planning another Atari-related release in the near future. He right, but in the meantime do not sleep on this badboy

The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra - "The James Bond Theme" (with original Bond Theme Guitarist Vic Flick) (1:55)
London Music Works - "Goldfinger" (with Louise Dearman) (2:52)
Review: It's not long now until the much-delayed new James Bond film gets released, so to mark the occasion - and Record Store Day - the good folks at Silva Screen have decided to offer up this seven-inch containing cover versions of theme tunes from the iconic spy series. On the A-side, the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra joins forces with guitarist Vic Flick on a fittingly excitement-packed take on Monty Norman's original 'James Bond Theme'. Flick reprises his 1960s spy-funk guitar licks from the original version, while the orchestra hits all the right notes on a familiar favourite. Arguably even better is London Sound Works' similarly authentic and luscious cover of 'Goldfinger', with Louise Dearman doing a rather good impression of Dame Shirley Bassey.

Review: Closing The Eternity is a Siberian Cosmic Drone project from Ekaterinburg, with only few released CD-Rs so far it gained already kind of cult-status for lovers of bleak drone-minimalism. The first vinyl release shows CTI using original "Northern Lights Soundings" together with synths, implementing very cosmic soundwaves with electronic whirs & sinus-tones and small raspy craters inside. There's a drift into objectlessness and dissolution in these sounds, and urge into non-existence or transformation into a higher existence-form? This is the perfect soundtrack to the red dawn of the north!

Review: Second time around for 'Bloody Language', a 2014 single from Italian industrial scene veterans Control Unit. Appearing again on translucent green vinyl in an ultra-limited pressing of 100, the record offers a good introduction to the dystopian musical world of the outfit's principle players, guitarist/vocalist Ninni Morgia and synth player/vocalist Silvia Kastel. 'Bloody Language' is raw, fuzzy and intense, with squealing lead guitar solos and Kastel's angry, stylized vocals rising above Nine Inch Nails style riffs and punky drums. It comes accompanied by an even more punk-fuelled bonus cut, 'Alarm', and a freakish post-industrial number on the flip - the beat-free, end-of-days soundscape that is EP highlight 'Forbidden Thoughts'

Review: The Cromagnon Band's debut 7" back in 2019 was a sell-out and critically acclaimed success. They make a welcome return here with another natural fusion of all of the tastes and styles of the individual band members. They have said before they make music in a reverse engineering fashion after years honing their skills producing beats on MPCs before moving to real instruments. They've already featured on compilations from Andy Votel and Doug Shipton's Finder Keepers label and these two nuggets are likely to become crate-digging delights of the future. 'Green Smoke' is a tumble of funky drums and jazzy keys that never let up and 'Thunder Perfect' is a deeper, more spacious approach to funk.

We Can Rebuild Him
Review: Oh yes, we've been waiting on this reissue for quite some time! Originally out in 2009, Das Ding's "Triffid Farm" is one of those electro jams that simply stand out, and one which his fellow Dutch DJ's have been chucking on the decks a-go-go! The Rotterdam-based producer is elusive to say the least, but what you really need to know about him is how seductive his own personal brand of wave influenced electro is. "Triffid Farm" is a pulsating, ringing drum-machine track with a seriously funky dose of synth madness at its core - one for the heads AND the floor! On the flip, "We Can Rebuild Him" is nuttier, more Drexciyan in nature and just that little bit darker. Recommended.

16 (new mix) (5:01)
Review: Since Minimal Wave released a fine compendium of his early 1980s work as Das Ding back in 2009, Danny Bosten has become something of a cult artist. His latest missive on the re-born Tear Apart Tapes label is a tasty 7" featuring two new, all-analogue jams in his distinctive style. The title track is a boisterous and cheerily melodious affair, sitting somewhere between leftfield instrumental synth-pop and glistening Italo-disco. Flipside "16 (new mix)" is slower and more contemplative. It features bold electro bass, hip-hop tempo drum machine percussion, drowsy chords and woozy synthesizer melodies. It's the kind of analogue electronica that boasts a timeless quality, despite its contemporary construction.

Intermission (4:46)
Review: Danny Bosten's Das Ding project is no newcomer to the scene. In fact, the Dutch pseudo electro artist has been active since the mid-1980s via his quirky Tear Apart Tapes label, dealing specifically in cassettes until this new 7". "Nerd" is one of those tunes that crosses many genres and paths, taking the spirit of Kraftwerk and placing it onto a new plateau that is both relevant and inclusive of contemporary styles and ideas...that bassline could be left on for hours on end! "Intermission" is similarly leftfield, except that here Bosten scraps the buzzy bassline in favour of more tranquil sounds and samples that edge on the Japanese end of the spectrum. Recommended

Review: A must for fans of Minimal Wave and Mannequin Records retroverts on offer here from Pascal Pinkert (Dollkraut) according to Knekelhuis themselves: he's working on his darker wave salvation, going by the moniker of De Ambassade. In the greyness by concrete of the Amsterdam suburbs. The dusty coldwave vibes on the title track are more reminiscent of X Mal Deutschland than Das Ding with its dark guitars and bass but it's still alright by us. On the flip is "Geen Grenade" a bit more pop-ish and upbeat. Something that you could imagine hearing in some Goth discotheque circa '83.

Girl With The Gun (1:42)

Rapimento In Sicilia (2:08)
Review: French director Jean Luc Godard - a founding father of the French New Wave cinema movement - once quipped that all you need to make a movie is a girl and a gun. Incredibly active throughout the 1960s and 70s (arguably his heyday albeit he's still making great flicks today), his message was clearly heard around that time by Mario Monicelli over the border in Italy, who made The Girl with the Pistol, a 1968 comedy that tackles some meaty themes head on (bride kidnapping, honour killing).

An Oscar-nominee (Best Foreign Language Film), leading lady Monica Vitti walked away with a David di Donatello for Best Actress (the Academy of Italian Cinema awards) and rightly so. The movie is great and well worth digging out, partly because the soundtrack is so mesmerising. Just three tracks are here, but three great ones. Mixing swinging rock R&B, strange Frontierland scores and trippy, acid rock, it's a surreal ride everyone should take.

Review: "The final episode of this soap-opera of a band will be released in the form of a 7 inch on 24.01.2025." If this is your first encounter with De Nooit Moede, then welcome to the wake of the best group you sadly only cottoned onto when they were posting about their final release on Instagram. The Brussels seven piece's swan song certainly fits the bill for funeral soundtrack, with RIP's garage-punk-wave washing through your mind with equal parts melancholy and swagger. Four tracks run from the staccato-step of 'Doopsel', which opens the scoring and sets the mood perfectly, through the more melodic 'Sluiswachter', blissfully downtrodden 'Fake Niet', and motoring 'Alledaagse Nachten'. Each is as infectiously groovy as the next, and cooler than pretty much everything else you will have been listening to this week/month/year. More Flemish attitude, please.
