Time Will Tell/Lights Out (The Reflex Revisions)
Patrice Rushen - "Time Will Tell" (The Reflex Revision)
Nubiyan Twist - "Lights Out" (feat Nile Rodgers - The Reflex Revision)
Review: Disco don The Reflex is back with a couple of signature reworks, and this time it is two giants of the disco world that are in the spotlight. First up, disco innovator Patrice Rushen's 'Time Will Tell' gets flipped into a paced, seductive disco sound with tambourines and big horns, funky drums and a nice falsetto vocal all getting you going. On the flip, Nubiyan Twist's 'Lights Out feat Nile Rodgers' slows things down and gets a little more saucy with noodling guitars, golden chords and sliding hi-hats all encouraging you to cut loose. Both of these are timeless revisions.

Review: 'Super Disco Edits Brazil Jazz Funk' is the imaginative title of this well-tagged edits V/A from Legofunk, charting wah-heavy lollops round the May tree across several standout stomps, from Alexny, Alkalino, Scruscru and Lego himself. All turning their hands to Afro-funk freak succours of impossible-to-rediscover-except-for-if-you're-a-true-connoisseur origin, we're thoroughly dazed and confused at the soft wah contusions of 'DDB' and the recumbent ocean laps of 'Harina De Maiz', perfect for hammock lazing.

Review: Legofunk brings four new disco-jazz funk edits propulsors to the plate, reserving front-row seats for fellow producer Hansi on the A1 before pinning down three further orotund disco-breaks tones himself. The A-side hears a segueing from Jimmy Castor to Booker T And The MG's, while the B lobs the loudspeaker through the looking glass, ending things on an ultra-obscure Andean disco stomp from Lego label mainstay The Kool Orch.

Let The Sunshine In (edit By Mr K)
1, 2, 3 (Mr K Extension Of Walter Gibbos Melting Pot Acetate)
Review: Ready for summer festivals, outdoor dances and sun-soaked boat parties, disco's longest serving re-editor Danny Krivit brings his "Mr K Edits" project to Fatty Fatty Phonographics for the very first time. Saluting the sun, he drops a fine, extended edit of suitably big gospel soul/disco number 'Let The Sunshine In', cannily building towards a grandiose, life-affirming conclusion full of righteous group vocals and impassioned male lead vocals. On the flip, Krivit reworks an obscurity from Walter Gibbons' private collection of one-off acetates. Originally pressed to a seven-inch, Krivit's version extends the extra-percussive, jazzy, infectious and celebratory disco obscurity for added dancefloor pleasure. Like the majority of Krivit's edits, it's a masterclass in club-focused rearrangement.

Chez Madame La Baronne (Sac Vide version)
Review: Back in 2023, Parisian jazz-funk-meets-disco outfit Chatobaron partnered with 21st century disco icon Dimitri From Paris on the superb 'Chez Madame La Baronne'. At the time, the Idjut Boys were called in to remix it, but only one of their suite of takes was released. Hence this killer four-tracker on their own Bite The Day label. It's typical of the long-serving duo's wild, wonderful and frequently deliciously dubbed-out work. While the opening 'Le Fouet version' is a rolling, spacey, sun-splashed and only lightly dubby dancefloor excursion, the mix which follows - the 'Grosse Bite version' - is a wonderfully trippy, percussion-rich drum dub smothered in tape delay and space echo; in other words, a classic Idjuts interpretation. Over on the reverse, the 'Sac Plain' version is a proper Idjuts dub that flits between spacey drop-outs and extended groove sections, while the closing 'Sac Vide version' is a sunrise-ready ambient delight.

Lusty Lady
Review: Dynamite Cuts continue their hot streak of essential 7" reissues with two soulful gems from North Carolina-born soul legend Johnny Bristol. Best known for his silky vocal style and smooth songwriting, Bristol's original recording of 'I Wouldn't Change A Thing' is presented here in all its lush, upbeat gloryia joyous rare-groove dancer that later found fame through Coke Escovedo's version. The flip, 'Lusty Lady', slows the tempo slightly, opening with a crisp drum-break before unfolding into a seductive mid-tempo groove, complete with lush strings and understated funkiness. Both tracks showcase Bristol's soulful delivery and production finesse, making this 7" an essential reissue for collectors and DJs alike.

Review: A-grade disco don Monsieur Van Pratt shares duties on his latest missive with so-called "cosmic funk slinger" Disco 86 as both artists take one side each. MVP is first up with 'Lovers' with its saucy male vocals and funky basslines littered with Chic-style hooks. 'All I Do' layers in plenty of filtered synths and noodling bass hooks to a classic vocal and then it's over to the B-side. 'Shoot Me Baby' is a low-slung and sleazy sound with smooth and sexy vocals and meandering bass. 'Disco Galaxy' is a more upbeat sound with funky brass, leggy drums and a lavish arrangement that is full of action. Another unmissable platter in this new limited Illegal Disco series.

Review: Born of Italy's late-70s disco explosion, Change were known for their frictionless blend of European groove and American soul, scoring international success with 'The Glow of Love' and 'Searching'. Their latest single sees Tanya Michelle Smith step in on vocals, bringing warmth and clarity to a lush, live-instrumentally-driven psychodrama, nodding further to a golden-era sound that excises nostalgia for a modern twist. As well as the original, this 12" hears two reworks from MM & AT, extending our floor fortunes out to an extra remix by Figo Sound & JL. A strong return from a group whose music has long stood at the junction of sophistication and soul.

These edits proffer yet another slice of crazy-life glitz, its A-sider decider especially offering much lyrical fodder for the philosophical taking away: "life ain't so bad at all... just enjoy yourself".

Review: We don't know much - or anything really - about the secretive Nico Bellari, so all we can go off is the music. This is his own new label, and it kicks off with a delightful pair of edits of some good old disco delights, and both come with their own carefully stripped-back and flesh dubs, all mixed and edited from original multi-tracks. 'Dance, Dance, Dance' is a nice and funky disc stepper with a silky and seductive lead vocal that swells the heart. 'Straight Ahead' is more weighty for the pet time with some fat-ass bass and lovely improvised synth playfulness, all under a vocal you will know and probably already love.

Review: Another dug-out dispatch from Tokyo's most diligent soul surgeon. This latest 7" distills veteran editor Loftsoul's flair for unearthing overlooked grooves and flipping them into low-slung, floor-ready burners. Side A stretches a sweet, previously under-the-radar soul cut into a strut-ready salivation, while the flip dips into hazier jazz-funk moorings: crisp drum breaks, warm Rhodes, slow-cooked syncopation. With subtle EQ and caressing lowpass warmth, we hear it's not about maximal intervention; it's about knowing where to put the scalpel. The latest in a long-running series, it's certainly an outlier find for record-bin archaeologists.

Review: Dr Packer brings an expert touch to Mikki Farrow's 1985 boogie-funk classic 'Dance Lover', baring a remix squaring electro-modernism and disco nostalgia. The little-loved Detroit singer moved to Philly in 1968, and worked as a backing vocalist before scoring her own hit with 'Love Emergency', after romantically partnering with producer Norman Harris. And nowadays known for his bottomless knowledge, the Australian remix master Packer keeps fastidious control over his own synth lines as they're layered like buttercream over Mikki's OG voxes; no more refining needed. The beat is heavier, the basslines deeper and the energy ramped up, adding crisper percussions and a refulgent audio finish.

Review: Earlier this year, the Revenge's Instruments of Rapture label - the imprint with which he made his name, and which delivered tons of fantastically chugging, slow house style disco reworks in the late noughties - returned to stores after a 13 year hiatus. This second salvo from the reborn imprint features two in-demand back catalogue cuts and what appears to be a never-heard-before cut. In the former category you'll find 'Just a Memory', a slow-build, house style rework of a string-laden disco classic of the deeply loved-up variety, where glassy-eyed female vocals and spacey synths catch the ear, and 'Planets (Lost Groove)' - a Revenge revision of a stomping but atmospheric disco-house looper. Fresh for this release is 'Better', a Beatdown style midtempo disco-house loop jam of the type that the label was once famous for.

Review: Disco De Jure made a great debut with its first release and now backs that up with more quality for lovers of classic disco with a contemporary twist. It is the rather mysterious Nico Bellari who steps up to edit this into his own vibe. 'If The Music Makes You Feel Like Dancing' gets underway with lush strong stabs, rolling drums and squelchy synth work that will get those hands in the air. The dub De Jure is a glossy version paired back to the groove, and on the flip, the timeless joys of Gloria Estefan's 'Rhythm Of The Night' get a subtle update with more club-ready kicks. The Chicagoan has released many fine collections of reworks over the last decade and this two-tracker is another high-grade treat. Up first is 'Fiyah', a heavyweight tease-and-release loop jam built around low-slung disco grooves, layered vocal samples and subtle effects trickery. While he appears not to have add any beats, its' Soundstream-esque construction makes it perfectly suited to house dancefloors. Over on the flip, he gives his take on one of the most beloved disco classics of all time: Diana Ross's incredible 'Love Hangover'. He extends the upbeat sections, paying more attention to hear vocalisations, the infectious instrumentation and killer groove.

Review: Medicine Music offer us a remedy, but not a cure, for a chronic ailment of ours: for some reason we simply cannot shake the compulsion to seek out disco edits in quadruply combined pill form. The second volume in Dr. Packer's own reworks series, this new'un follows the first edition released far back in 2017. 'Hint Of Love' and 'Watch Your Back' span nouveau riche falsettos and dirt-caked soul baritones respectively, proving the polyphonic potential of disco's voices despite the unknowability of the samples so sourced. 'Chesty Lady Of The West' is meanwhile the perkiest tune on the record, curling through a minimal, backwashy sound, where guitars soar gleefully in a surfy space above the 10th fret.

His new EP now drops as an inevitable testament to his ability not just to select but craft and cut grooves of his own; the lead track works through an untraceable disco source sample of fiendishly obscure proportions, despite its brilliant hookline: "set your mind free, you can't fight it, you'll be delighted, destiny". The A-sider is equally obscure, though it sounds to be quite a loyal and forgiving redo of an equally graded disco-soul crooner, awash in lyrical reminders of the operant genre: "disco!"

Calgary's Tomas Fussey is the man behind Kinga, a project that embraces androgyny and nightlife flair and is inspired by gender-fluid icons of the 80s, such as Boy George and Janet Jackson, and fuelled by a love of disco and synth-pop. 'Elevator Operator' and the now-iconic B-side 'Sexy Boy' gained unexpected radio play despite its bold style, while a 1989 remix brought slick production, though it didn't hit commercially. Today, its deep grooves feel more relevant than ever and this version features five mixes, original artwork, liner notes, and a vintage press photo of the glamorous, genre-defying Kinga.

Review: Skatebard and Lauer are Trollkraft, a sure-to-be iconic Norwegian-German partnership that has a famous love of synths and have already put out vast reserves of quality sounds across various styles. Here their collaboration gives rise to a pair of electrifying cuts. The title track features rich drum layers, lush strings and a throbbing bass undercurrent which has elements of disco, house, indie and Italo all adding to its charm. 'One Night In Geilo' channels 90s house rhythms with a brilliant two-stepping melody that smartly reimagines rave with playful, effervescent energy. These two wizards bring great character to this music with strobe lights, bongos, and trance all making for a full on heart-of-the-party experience doused in euphoria.

Secret Banger
Monday
Review: Creatively inspired and boosted by the success of 2024 summer anthem 'Italo Disco Banger', Danny Berman AKA Red Rack'em has returned to action with another soon-to-be-massive club workout, 'Secret Banger' - a cut that's already being rinsed in clubs by select tastemaker DJs. A slow-build gem in which cut-up samples (including rubbery-bass, glassy-eyed male vocals and occasional filtered disco loops) rub shoulders with vibrant synth flourishes over a bed of crunchy house beats and the dreamiest of chords, it's a genuine masterclass in tease-and-release dancefloor dynamics. Berman's ability to combine unusual and off-kilter elements (and some rather sneaky samples) comes to the fore once more on 'Monday', a low slung and trippy affair that boasts some seriously sleazy sub-bass vibrations, dusty minor key stabs, quick arrangement changes and cut-up samples aplenty.

Review: Heads roll, as Lee 'Scratch' Perry's final known recording is revealed to the world, proving fraudulent any would-be counterclaimants to the title. Australian beatmaker Inkswel was the lucky artist to finally hook up with the late Upsetter: originally featured on his 2022 album Chasing Infinity (Cosmocities), the track blends a twisted, beat-boogie-influenced dub vibe with Perry's signature woozy wails. Now fellow progressive house producers James Curd and Sofatalk bring their unique takes across three remixes on fresh 12" vinyl, extending the original mix astride a never-before-heard demo, leaving the door ajar for fans to peek in to the song's making.

Review: Death On Wax follow the curious trend of cataloguing their releases as though they're counting down to doomsday, and 'DW00:00:04' only adds another second to midnight with a fresh collaboration between Jaz (John Zahl) and Party Dad, both hailing from the US. Their prior outing for Philly phantasists Universal Cave proved almost as endearing as this higher-level pedal pivoter, whose three functional tracks do the altruistic work of naming themselves after the BPM they clock in at. With classic hardware reverbs echoing a classic 80s essence, and train whistles, synth brasses and adult filmographic electro soul ensuing on the B side, all we can say is that you're in for a rather varied treat.

Review: The debut album from Mexican duo Destino Sonido, namely electronic music veteran Juan Soto and rising vocal talent Labibe, mixes up disco swagger, upright funk attitude, synthpop flavours and just the tastiest smidge of pop instinct. 'Seduccion Galactica' has more than a touch of Vince Clarke's magic but rich simplicity about it, while closing tune 'Oscuridad' (You Man remix) adds an epic feel to proceedings, while simultaneously keeping them shiny and approachable. Dan Solo makes two appearances, Krofon pops in to lend a hand on 'Amandote' and Monsieur Von Pratt remixes 'Playa, Sol Y Amor' into a robo-disco banger. Following nobody's rules, it's an awful lots of fun from start to finish.

Review: German scalpel specialist Daniel 'SIRS' Klein rides in with a quartet of typically refined edits here, each track fit for discerning floors thanks to some gentle tucks and studio finesse. The bittersweet soul of 'Love Theme' is one for the lovers out there, with its emotive vocal, dramatic strings and heavy groove, while the tropical disco flex of 'Amigo Da Nova York' is built for peak-time floors, with stirring horns, sexed-up vocals and limber percussion. The gloriously camp 'Love Fever' continues the driving tempo, before closing jam 'Tokyo Fantasy' lifts the roof all the way off, with its impassioned singalong chorus and irrepressible groove.

Review: Jolene Cuts stitches together the past and future of French Touch with a series of deft, filter-drenched cuts that pulse with groove and nostalgia. This vinyl-only release distills the essence of the genre, but rather than simply rehashing the well-worn tropes of disco loops and sweeping filters, Danny and Mike manipulate texture and space, creating something that feels alive in the moment. 'Santa' oozes with hazy warmth, its rolling bassline and clipped vocal chops pulling dancers into a deep, hypnotic sway. 'Clear' strips things back to their rawest elementsithudding kick, shimmering chords, and just enough swing to keep bodies locked in. The jittery pulse of 'Expresso' flirts with urgency, teasing out its rhythmic tension before releasing it in waves. On the flip, 'Salsa' stretches Latin percussion into a woozy, off-kilter groove, while 'Do It' harnesses call-and-response vocal snippets to build anticipation before dropping into a groove so thick it practically melts into the speakers. It's a masterclass in movementifluid, tactile, and designed for those who know that house music is as much about feeling as it is about sound.

Review: Fresh from the release of her typically excellent Love Fest single - a masterclass in boogie and 80s synth-soul revivalism, like much of her output - Boston-based artist Saucy Lady pays tribute to the 1980s musical culture of her native Japan. Produced in collaboration with Aussie producer Slynk (who last worked with Saucy Lady in 2023), 'Yume No Tsuzuki' sits somewhere between vintage 'City Pop' and Japanese takes on 80s soul. As you'd expect, it's as musically authentic as you'd expect - colourful synths, punchy drum machine beats and boogie sonic squiggles aplenty - with Saucy Lady singing in both Japanese and English. The superb full vocal version (side A) is our pick, but the instrumental mix is also well worth club plays.

Review: Waves Within is a genre-blending triumph from Mexican producers Luca Ferrand and Selva in which they serve up sounds that evolve through deep house, broken beat, jazz, nu-disco and hip-hop. Opener 'Bona Fide' pairs dusty jazz and disco-house with a slick hip-hop switch and some superbly sunny melodies. 'Zarapes (After the Rain)' marries Mexican folk and broken beat, then 'Back To That Thang' twists jazz guitar into a genre-fluid ride and the title track evokes tropical 90s house. Closer 'Lynx' is a shapeshifting house cut with bulbous bass and sophisticated sound design that really brings it to life.

Review: Saint Paul has long since proven himself as a fine curator of dusty beats across the deeper house and disco spectrum. He is part of the Moonrise Hill Material crew and now lands on Saint Wax with his first outing of the year. 'The Chosen One' brims with joy from the shimmering chords and vocal chops while bumpy drums get you moving. 'Pour L'Amour Du G-Funk (69 La Trik)' is a funky jam with smeared pads and excitable synths then 'Bay Disco Orkestra' brings a percussive twist and retro disco vibe. The trio of flip-side cuts explored slower, more soulful deep house and jazzy grooves that overflow with musicality, while a Gledd remix brings a lovely Latin skip and shuffle to 'Don't Hold Back Da Groove'.

Here we've 'Superfunkula', a not-too-shabby stack of big-hit pianos and walking bass, and 'So Easy', a pan-fluting, blast-from-the-past rework of SBTRKT's 'New Dorp. This latest one is a glamorous slab of Day-Glo disco gaud. 'Let's Get It On' opens with splendid flair, with twang guitars, talkbox tremolos and disco girl backing singer ad-libs, before 'Don't Give Up' follows with a deep-fried P-funk prance replete with transitory glissando. 'Makin' Love' and 'Get On Down' hear the EP wind down the pace, the latter track ending on an obscure edit of Suzy & Chas' Belgian 1978 rouser, 'Man I Dig Music'.

Review: 25 editions deep now, the Attack The Dancefloor 12" series is where we at ZR do our best to cater to our "Is it coming out on vinyl?" crew. Kicking off proceedings is Dave Lee's mix of Foremost Poets classic 'Beside Myself', a brand new remix where Dave delivers a stonking, cowbell cracking slice of house with the soulful joy Johnny Dangerous brings with his vocals. Ich Liebe Es Zu Tanzen!.
On the flip is Output / Input's 'Every Time You Touch Me' which gets Boogiefied by Dave Lee, who adds slick Moog bass, jazz-funk guitars & brassy synths under Antonio McLendon's Luther-esque vocal performance. To close out is one for the Garage heads, an exclusive 'Vocal Dub Pressure' version of Groove Assassin's recent hit remix of Destiny II's 'I'm Here For This' which is currently not available digitally. Review: The Ray Contreras Band, fixtures of the 80s New York dance scene, first released 'You Make It Harder' as a 7" under the name Contreras / Sokolov / Milgrom. A rare, twilight boogie-funk track specially cherished among nostalgists, the record again avails itself this time in the form of a 12" single, expanded over four formerly unreleased songs. A supremely satisfying, deep-plombing mix takes the cake on the A1 as Elliot Sokolov's impassioned vocals recount the experience of romantic frustration through sharp, between-the-lines intakes of breath. 'Wishful Thinking', 'If You Want My Love', 'I Can Feel Your Heartbeat', and 'Miami Girl' follow as the criminally unreleased demos, all of which are as hit-worthy as the A, we kid you not. New York electro-funk at its finest, whiffing with tasteful cheese.

With DJ support from the likes of Danny Howard, Mark Knight, Milk & Sugar and Boston Dub, you just know that this one's stayed on heaviest rotation even before official release day. The A-side is a relick of Joe Cutler and E-Man's 'It's Yours', going way, way back to an obscurity of nearly impossible veracity: "what makes you journey into the night and take flight on a pursuit of musical bliss?" 'Close Lick', meanwhile, backs up the backside with an even less-determinate but undeniably lowriding remix, complete with spinback samples and an Afro-diasporic call and response.

Bruno Boogie (extended)
Bruno Boogie (Daniel Monaco Latin Wannabe remix)
Bruno Boogie (radio edit)
Review: 'Bruno Boogie' throws Indian dance motifs into a blender with glossy disco-funk, and comes out the output side a slick, sweaty and strange pesto. The brains behind it are Euro Nettuno, still warm from their dreamy Apres Le Paradis drop on Polyamore, teaming up with label boss Bruno Belissimo, a multi-instrumentalist with a knack for fusing slap bass and synth swirl into tight, live-sounding cuts. The yield is a heady, percussion-rich blend, where Mumbai heat meets Rimini kitsch. Daniel Monaco steps in on remix duty, pushing it further into the cosmos with a deep, sinewy rerub, shortly before a radio edit comes on the B2, poised to disrupt the world service airchain.

Shango
Review: While Tony Williams AKA Addison Groove is best known for his sub-bass heavy, rave-igniting workouts, he grew up in Bristol on a diet of funk, soul, hip-hop, electro, disco and early house. That's what his semi hush-hush Groove label is all about: a space for him to rework personal favourites and killer cuts in a re-edit style, rather than a warehouse-friendly rave-igniting one. On this second instalment he focuses on reshaping African dancefloor burners from the 1970s, first successfully dubbing out, extending and rearranging Manu Dibango classic 'Soul Makossa' (as 'Changa'). 'Maruno' is a heavy, percussion-rich take on Afro-disco number smothered in trippy dub-wise effects and smart drum edits, while 'Shango' is a low-down, spaced-out Afro-stomper guaranteed to get feet moving and heads spinning.
