  1. Manfredas - "Mani From The Block" (7:57)
  2. Siaubas - "Hare Hare" (6:24)
  3. Simple Symmetry - "Yalla" (6:42)
Review: Those fine folks behind the otherworldly Multi-Culti imprint have decided to launch a re-edit series, naturally focusing on reworks of weird and wonderful, off-kilter gems from around the world. This first serving of Cult Edits naturally contains some seriously tasty and exotic fare, most notably the parping, horn-heavy shuffle of Manfredas's "Mani From The Block", a stretched-out interpretation of what appears to be a Turkish style funk weird-out. Flip to the B-side for two more heavyweight slabs of wild goodness: the low-slung, dub-fired post-punk insanity of Siaubas's "Hare Hare" rework, and the throbbing, chant-along drug-chug of Simple Symmetry's brilliant "Yalla" interpretation.

  1. Same Old Clown (album version)
  2. Same Old Clown (Linkwood remix)
  3. Same Old Clown (KON remix)
  4. Same Old Clown (KON dub)
Review: Chico Mann and Kendra Morris combine sublimely on the Same Old Clown 12" through Soundway which is a thrilling taster of what's to come on Magical Thinking, the multi instrumentalist's third solo LP. Whilst the Antibalas guitarist has remained close to his Afrobeat roots on previous long players for Wax Poetics and Kindred Spirits, his new album is said to offer a more expansive portrayal of Chico's tastes taking in latin, freestyle, funk and boogie and "Same Old Clown" certainly suggests this is a rewarding approach. Mann's classic squelching 80s electro funk arrangement is the perfect backdrop for Kendra's slinky vocals and the accompanying remixes from Linkwood and Kon only serve to show her range, with the Firecracker man's boogie house update our personal favourite here at Juno.

  3. Jank - "Doin' It" (Mannmademusic remix) (6:06)
  4. Jank - "Doin'It" (5:58)
Review: Under the now familiar Mannmademusic alias, Ian Mann has delivered fine material for Shadeleaf, Lumberjacks In Hell and Glenview. Here he makes his first appearance on fast-rising Bristol disco-house imprint Boogie Cafe. Opener "Sandman" is superb; a kind of colossally beefed up edit that underpins the soulful, party-starting source material with bustling new beats and bass. In contrast, "Get Up (Remix)" is a dustier and woozier, jazz-flecked deep house affair of the sort we'd expect to hear from Detroit producers such as Andres. Flip for the debut of previously unheard producer Jank. "Doin' It" is a chugging, LTJ style edit of a super-sweet soul cut rich in undulating bass and twinkling keys. Fittingly, Mannmademusic provides a jauntier, deep house flavoured remix.

  1. Familiar Five (3:44)
  2. Love Release (7:52)
  3. High Times (7:16)
  4. Rocketship (6:57)
Review: Marcus Marr's previous productions have largely been marked out by an ability to create rubbery, funk-fuelled anthems that put his own fine musicianship at the heart of the action. You'll find plenty of similar material on his latest DFA EP - see the Bootsy Collins jamming in New York in 1981 vibes of previous single "High Times" and "Love Release", which is marked out by some fantastic, jammed-out synth solos - but also tracks that explore darker and moodier territory (a product of being alone in the studio all night, according to the man himself). Of these, it's the slow, heavy, dubby and druggy pulse of "Familiar Five", featuring a distinctive spoken word vocal and a groove straight out of the post-punk playbook, which really hits the spot.

  1. Superior Conjunction (9:27)
  2. Arpadia (8:18)
  3. The Train Of Fantastic (feat Fantastic Twins) (11:58)
Review: After a relatively quiet 2016, Marvin and Guy seemed to have stepped up a level in 2017. Super Conjunction is undoubtedly one of their strongest releases to date, with the brilliant title track - a mid-tempo fusion of spacey arpeggio lines, restless TB-303 psychedelia, blissful breakdowns and hypnotic drum machine hits - impressively setting the tone. The track that follows, the melancholic Italo-disco drug-chug of "Arpadia" is quietly impressive too, but pales in comparison with epic flipside "The Train of Fantastic". Featuring contributions from occasional Optimo Music sorts the Fantastic Twins, the track seems to build in waves of 12 mesmerizing minutes, as Marvin & Guy pepper another Italo-style arpeggio groove with tumbling pianos, positive chord progressions and stylish spoken word vocals.

  1. Djinn (Jonny Rock remix) (7:26)
  2. Djinn (Jonny Rock dub) (6:33)
Review: For this latest instalment in the ongoing Hamam House series, label chief Jonny Rock has not looked to the disco era for inspiration. Instead, he's turned his attention to "Djinn", a cut from the 2015 debut album by Lebanese indie-rockers Mashrou' Leila. Rock's revisions are, naturally, vastly different to the original version, with the vocal-laden Remix sitting somewhere between early '80s proto-house, a club ready take on new wave and sleazy electronic disco. In contrast, the dub is a little closer to Italo-disco in feel, though the delay-laden drum hits and bubbly, lo-fi electronics still feel closer to both sparse proto-house and stylish post-punk synth-pop. Either way, these are excellent reworks from the former Music For Freaks man.

  3. I Want Your Love
Review: Rush Hour did us plenty of favours this year but by far our most cherished was the reissue of James Mason's timeless, proto-house excursions on the infamous "Nightgruv" EP. There's really not much to be said about these peerless productions, the original mix is a stunning voyage through glimmering synths backed by a chugging beat groove, but the unreleased longer edit is the one - voyaging through those gorgeous drums and piano keys like there's no tomorrow! "I Want Your Love" is another masterpiece - slo-mo hip-hop beats mixed in with those killer funk bass lines and the infamous vocals taking you to another dimension.

  1. You Got The Best Of Me (0:30)
  2. I Can't Forget About You (0:30)
Review: A lot of us have to thank Expansions for switching us on to Matlock in the first place, thanks to them unearthing him for their Soulchasers collection way back in the early 90s. Here they return to two of Glenn's finest, silkiest soul diamonds. Written for the romantics, produced for the dancefloor right at the very end of the classic 70s sound, "You Got The Best Of Me" has an upbeat Barry White feel to its delivery and sentiment while "I Can't Forget About You" has a lighter touch and flightier flow. The former previous super-rare on 45, the latter never press to 45 before... Both supreme and timeless.

  1. Perfection (4:54)
  2. Love In Motion (4:46)
Review: The good feelings continue... When Jay W McGee returned after almost 30 years in 2015 most assumed it would be a one-off special album but the silver fox's signature falsettos still have plenty of steam to go as we're treated to two sides of his soulful coin. "Perfection" is a fervent uptempo disco cut with stacks of energy while "Love In Motion" is much more smouldering and reflective (think Faze O) and reminds us of Jay's lower, sexier vocal range. Perfect.

  1. Do I Do (7:15)
  2. Do I Do (instrumental) (6:32)
Review: It's fair to say that Maurice's McGee's "Do I Do" is something of an Italo-disco classic. It was initially released back in 1983 on Full Time Records, and featured the man himself - seemingly an invented alias for a local Genova singer recruited by the prolific Studio G production team - telling a tale of missed parties and late night opportunities over a backing track that sits somewhere between the all-arpeggio grooves of Italian disco and the slick, synth-heavy warmth of '83 New York boogie. On this timely reissue, the extended vocal version (remastered to sound extra loud) is accompanied by the arguably superior Instrumental take, which wisely highlights clipped disco guitars and the superb, synth-heavy groove.

  4. Sweet Life - "I Get Lifted" (Medlar dub) (5:52)
Review: On this officially licensed release, Wolf Music regular Medlar gets a chance to rework some of his favourite West End Records tracks. He's done a fine job, too, delivering reworks that suit contemporary dancefloors, while paying due reverence to the superb source material. He begins by rearranging and extending Shirley Lites' most famous moment, the boogie-era brilliance of "Heat You Up (Melt You Down)", before slicing together bits of the vocal and instrumental versions of Love Club's steamy electrofunk slammer "Hot Summer Nights". On the flip, he heads towards more traditional disco territory, first cutting up Kenix's sweet hearted "There's Never Been (No One Like You)", before reaching for the dub effects on a brilliant revision of Sweet Life's "I Get Lifted".

Cat: SDE 022. Rel: 23 Feb 17
  1. Love On The Shelf (3:37)
  2. Bring You Love Closer (3:34)
Review: Over the last couple of years, Super Disco Edits has been responsible for unearthing and releasing previously unheard material from Willie Tee, Brass Horizon and Melton Bolton's Mighty Fire outfit. They've clearly got a great relationship with former Motown songwriter Bolton, as he's handed over two more previously unreleased, disc-era scorchers. "Love On The Shelf" is naturally heart-felt and luscious, with Belton's lead vocals soaring over simmering horns, rolling percussion and a superb, "walking" bassline. Turn to the flip for "Bring Your Love Closer", a seductive chunk of slo-mo soul for those intimate moments. While it lacks the dancefloor credentials of the A-side, it's certainly a smooth and immaculately produced excursion.

  1. Bad Luck (Tom Moulton mix) (7:59)
  2. Don't Leave Me This Way (Tom Moulton mix) (11:01)
Review: This release features two of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes' recordings that typify the cream of Philadelphia International and Sigma Sound studios' dominance of the dancefloor - at the absolute height of their creativity and power. They were one of the most popular groups on Gamble & Huff's label, clocking up a number of hits in the mid 1970's. "Bad Luck" spent 11 weeks on the No.1 slot on Billboard's U.S. Dance chart in 1975 and has since become one of the biggest dancefloor staples ever recorded. It gets a remix by the master Tom Moulton for added club dynamics. On the flip, we have the original full version of the classic "Don't Leave Me This Way" which is also mixed to perfection by Moulton. Both are state of the art lessons in what exhilarating dance music is all about. Fully remastered on limited edition 180 gram heavyweight vinyl.

Review: It's time for the masses to feel the real deepness of the true Chicago 80s era of music. According to the label only ten percent of what happened here in the 80s, is known to the rest of the world. Don't you wanna know the rest? This time a classic Chicago beat track gets put through the blender, and served up with a AA-side of new wave madness which sounds like Gina Soccio on smack. In other word, stellar edits of Propaganda's "Frozen Faces" and a radical take on Chip E's "It's House".

Review: Glasgow duo Mermaids make their Young Adults debut with a quartet of glistening, velvety house cuts that will resonate well with the nu-disco set, too. "Cherry Cola" is as sweet as its namesake but without the sickliness... All loopy and pensive, there's a very subtle sense of gradual dramatics to it dynamic. "Signal" is a much more heads down affair with nuances of the mid noughties Julien Jabre style house to it. With its insistent arpeggio and lush wafting pads "Chateau Mermont" recalls the Renaissance heyday two decades ago while "Everything But You" concludes this pristine emotive show on a deep, filtered breakbeat affair. Progressive.

Review: MFSB was an American studio band formed by producers of the Philadelphia International Records label. The label was founded in 1971 by Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff in Philadelphia. This is an official 12 inch re-release of probably the most revered Paradise Garage anthem of all time. Originally released in 1973, "Love Is The Message" has sustained dancefloors across the world ever since and here Prime present the full original mix from the master himself: Tom Moulton, which is very rare, as any seasoned digger could attest to. On the flip is "T.S.O.P. (The Sound Of Philadelphia)" aka the official Soul Train theme, again using Moulton's original mix.

Review: The heat's been roaring on this one ever since Soul Clap and Michael dropped the rare groove soul power "Get It On" digitally as a surprise late last year. Fronted by the raunchy sermon of Amy Douglas, it's now stacked on the wax it deserves and coupled by two more sterling disco gems: a revolution boogie stomper "Side Of Life" and "Changer", a sexy high-strut jam with precision string stabs and a mutant bassline that wraps itself around your tender bits. Here, he utilizes the pseudonym once more, delivering another quartet of killer re-edits for London's Giant Cuts. There's naturally much to admire, from the Idjut Boys style dub disco effects and rolling grooves of opener "The Hangover" (a revision of Diana Ross's brilliant "Love Hangover"), to the chunky, disco-meets-house chug of string-laden flipside opener "Fly Robert". Elsewhere, check the sweaty, cut-up, heavily percussive hustle of "Bo Knows", and the swinging, guitar-led disco soul-goes-house pump of "Know This".
