Questing Fingers EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: VOV 06. Rel: 27 Mar 17
  1. Clown Town (5:35)
  2. He Looked (4:46)
  3. Jizz Jazz (3:23)
  4. Drongo (6:27)
Review: Ant Plate's Vinyl Only ventures continue unabated, taking a break from the Yse Saint Laur'ant releases and turning to Minus The Majors instead. Whether it's just Plate in another one of his guises or not is unclear, but the music certainly fits in with the more exploratory, downtempo nature of previous Vinyl Only releases. "He Looked" is an especially funky number that revolves around crafty beats and warm Moog-esque synth ripples. Things get more broken on "Jizz Jazz", and then "Drongo" manages to go even further out to sea in its quest for the perfect balance between funk and freakiness.

Butter EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: AOP 002. Rel: 07 Aug 17
  1. This Is Not Butter Carolin
  2. Creamy Dreams
Review: Animals On Psychedelics snaps up a debut appearance from Miro Sundaymusiq for its second release, delving further into the label's mission statement of "the more tripped out, spacey side of electronic music." Miro opens up proceedings with "This Is Not Butter Carolin", a twinkling roller with subtle disco undertones and a cheeky nod to electro rubbed into the rhythm. So far, so psychedelic. "Creamy Dreams" is no slouch in the cosmic department either, loaded with bubbling arpeggios aimed skywards and using a sprightly set of drums to help the mellifluous tones along.

Ozzyism EP (12")
Cat: MST 027. Rel: 10 Nov 16
  1. Ozzyism (9:54)
  2. Ambibarb (4:22)
  3. Ozzyism (Rutherfort remix) (7:16)
  4. Barbara BAM (Raw demo version) (6:04)
Review: Lone Wolf McQuade and Freezy Freeze (to pick just two of their aliases) reunite for another Monkeyshop saga. Expressive and loaded with contrast, "Ozzyism" thumps with heady abandon. More disco than electro (but still crisp and edgy on the riff), it pounds as hard as Moustache can handle before giving us a much slower rub down with the spacious and mildly acidic "Ambibarb". Rutherfort adds more of a twinkle to the lead track while retaining the full thrust tempo while "Barbara BAM" is a much denser, heavier piece of analogue soul that's almost crunchy in its texture.

  1. Moodena - "Gil's Groove" (5:25)
  2. Sartorial & Moodena - "Turn It Up" (6:43)
  3. Sartorial - "6 Million" (6:16)
  4. Sartorial - "Feel The Heat" (6:47)
Review: Label heads Sartorial and Moodeena present the latest volume in the suitably summery Tropical Disco edits series, with the latter kicking things off with "Gil's Groove", a wonderfully positive revision of a Brazilian jazz-funk jam that underpins the original electric piano solos and sun-kissed instrumentation with spacey electronic flourishes and a head-nodding house groove. It's followed by a storming, sax-laden collaborative re-edit romp, as the scalpel-wielding duo gets to work on a familiar disco-funk smasher producing their version which features plenty of filter tricks and a rock solid rhythm track. On side B, Sartorial takes the spotlight, first delivering a soaring disco-house cut rich in swirling strings and funk-fired guitars ("6 Million"), before successfully tooling up a bouncy, head-in-the-clouds disco number ("Feel The Heat").

  2. Sartorial - "Feel It" (6:05)
  3. Sartorial & Simon Kennedy - "Got You The Floor" (6:54)
  4. Sartorial - "Electric Lane" (5:58)
Review: At the time of writing, Britain is basking in what feels like its 79th consecutive day of baking hot sunshine. What could be better, then, than another dose of tropical disco reworks from Sartorial and Moodena's fast-rising Tropical Disco imprint? Certainly, we can see a few open-air parties going wild to the impeccable piano solos and George Benson style jazz guitars of Moodeena's gently housed-up opener "Strawberry Jam", while Sartorial's "Feel It" is an urgent, guitar-laden rework of a familiar disco-funk favourite that should get things going on recognition factor alone. On the flip, Sartorial and Simon Kennedy successfully play around with a Pleasure-esque, jazz-funk-meets-disco number ("Got You The Floor"), before Sartorial gets the filters out for a tops-off dance through jazzy disco territory ("Electric Lane").

  3. Moments In Slank (bonus track) (2:51)
Review: The emergent trend of tapes issued by Vancouver label 1080p subsequently being licensed for a vinyl edition continues with Moon B's sublime Lifeworld album picked up for release by Hamburg operation Growing Bag Records. The label has form in this regard, previously granting the A.r.t. Wilson tape Overworld by Andras Fox a hugely popular vinyl edition and they've chosen wisely in securing this gem from the Moon B discography. Wedged somewhere between an album and a mixtape, Lifeworld was a kaleidoscopic journey into the LA-based artist's influences and this LP version is made all the more enticing by the presence of previously unreleased Moon B jammer "Moments in Slank".

Cat: TSRZV 02. Rel: 25 Sep 18
  1. How I Get Down (feat Moniquea) (4:46)
  2. Dreaming (4:29)
Review: Taken from their debut album of the same name, "Boogie Diaries" takes two of the album's many g-funk / electro boogie highlights for this limited 45. The A-side is all about Moniquea's soaring vocal as she makes things clear over a fat, Bootsy-flavoured bass. Meanwhile on the B "Dreaming" takes us even deeper into the block with a bulbous Zapp & Rodger style street sweep. Authentic funk.

  1. Everything That Shines Ain't Gold (part one & two) (6:12)
  2. Everything That Shines Ain't Gold (Floating Points edit) (4:38)
Review: You'll be unsurprised to learn that the latest reissue on Floating Points' Melodies imprint is of a record that is fiendishly hard to find. Collectors have long regarded "Everything That Shines Ain't Gold", a sumptuous funk-soul workout full of bold Hammond organ lines and jazzy guitar licks, as something of a "Holy Grail", so it's fantastic see the track getting a worthy reissue. For this edition, you'll find the full version (originally cut into two parts to fit on a 7") on side A, with a fresh Floating Points re-edit on the flip. His revision is naturally tastefully done, rolling with the sweetest instrumental passages before breaking into Moore's superb vocal.

  1. Standing Right Here (6:58)
  2. Make Me Believe In You (9:15)
Review: A reissue of the 1977 classic by the NYC born gospel singer Melba Moore. Moore is the daughter of saxophonist Teddy Hill and R&B singer Bonnie Davis. She is responsible for such hits as "Read My Lips", "Keepin' My Lover Satisfied" and "Love's Comin' At Ya" among many others. This McFadden & Whitehead production first appeared on the A Portrait Of Melba LP and is one truly timeless, feelgood soul jam: it's perfect actually! On the flip we've got the more saucy and upbeat disco-funk infused "Make Me Believe In You" which appeared originally on 1979's Dancin' With Melba. Moore was inducted into the Official Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame on October 4, 2015, in Detroit.

Review: John Morales - one half of the beyond-legendary production team M+M - finally delivers the new Club Motown series that began in 2014. The last 12" focused on divas but here we're celebrating two of the funkiest names in funk soul; Rick James and The Temptations. From the epic 11 minute reprise of "Standing On The Top" to the equally extensive shake up of "Brick House" via the brand new arrangement of "Big Time", it's another collection that only Morales could concoct. The stomping percussion-heavy into on the vocal dub of "Big Time" is impossible to sniff at too...

Review: Classic Italo one-hit mystery, Tony More (or Tony Moore as he's often credited) gave the world this lavish futurist Marzio Benelli-written pop odyssey in 1985 before promptly disappearing. With original pressings fetching over L200, Dark Entries have democratised it for all to enjoy. And there's plenty to enjoy... A restrained by hooky riff, sparse but delicate and vulnerable vocals and a chugging synth groove that cuts with a heavy cinematic feel that's succinctly of its time. Complete with an instrumental for full mix creativity.

  1. Heavenly Me (edit) (6:50)
  2. No One Knows (edit) (5:56)
Review: Jongno Edits are back with their fourth release and they got two tracks of pure Korean groove, by editing wizard Mori Ra. Side A is "Heavenly Me" (edit) which is a boogie banger that embraces all the elements of the top tunes of that era: strong drum beat, slappy bass synth and a violin break down. On the flip, there's "No One Knows" (edit) which is your perfect sunset balearic cut for this summer. The lush bell melodies perfectly match the suave voices so prepare your ascension to the clouds accompanied by delayed organs and acoustic guitar 'where Jeju becomes Ibiza'.

Review: Discodromo's playfully titled CockRing d'Amore edit series hits its fourth chapter with three hypnotic, transcendental edits from respected Osaka groove sculptor and selector Mori Ra. Three unnamed tracks, the focus should be strictly on the soul at play... The sweeping cinematica and narrative of "Track 1", the glistening cascades and layered vibraphone elements of "Track 2" and the lolloping, Nordic-feeling chugger finale. Chimes, electric bass and distant fiddles a-go-go, it's another singular trip from both Mori and a highly limited dispatch from CockTail d'Amore.

Review: Over the years Moton - the label run by Darren House aka Diesel and Dave Jarvis - has become synonymous with releasing great quality edits from a range of amazing producers. Their 43rd release is no different, offering up two glorious edits ready made for the dancefloor. On the A side we have the lo-slung and sensual slow burner that is "Cuffari" (Make The World Larger Than Me) that is powered along by a powerful vocal performance that will have you singing along in no time! On the flip, things get down to a funky groove on the late night boogie-down vibe of "Dancing (Jumbo)" edited by Lumberjacks In Hell's Marcel Vogel.

They return with two huge edits by gospel/soul music authoritarian Greg Belson and veteran edit crew/Situation member Paulo Fulci. Now as 'Divine Situation', Belson & Fulci are returning to the underground sound with a slew of edits, starting with these back to back club-tested heavy hitters. Exquisite woodwind and brass sections, silky strings and classic disco vocals all wrapped up into classic cuts, already road tested to perfection by the duo.

Review: Not all re-edit series' are created equal. The Moton Records Inc, series - one of the longest running in the world, these days - has consistently delivered high-grade re-rubs free of tame studio trickery. Predictably, there's more brilliance to be found throughout the hush-hush label's latest three-track missive, which is the work of London scene stalwart Dave Jarvis and fellow Love Vinyl shop-worker Jake Holloway. A-side "Morning Shunt", a brilliant rearrangement of a little-known Afro-disco cut that comes on like Fela Kuti covering "Don't Leave Me This Way", is the clear standout, though B-side jams "Jacques Theme" - a sort of William Onyeabor goes to Cuba throw-down - and "The Bandit" (Balearic brilliance with funk style drum breaks) are also excellent.

  1. Move D - "To The Disco 77'" (Move D live rework) (9:23)
  2. Move D & Justin Carter - "Leaves" (Basement demo) (9:59)
Review: Legendary German DJ/producer David "Move D" Moufang first appeared on Electric Minds back in 2013. "To The Disco '77" was an undoubted highlight of that 12" and here gets the remix treatment from the man himself. His "Live Rework" is a wonderfully loose and lucid affair, with quietly jazzy guitars, New Jersey garage organs and headline-grabbing vocal samples wrapping themselves around foreboding, low-end chords and nifty, on the fly drum machine programming. On the flip, Moufang joins forces with Mister Saturday Night man Justin Carter for "Leaves (Basement Demo)", a wonderfully deep, rich and spacey house cut that recalls the long-serving German producer's intelligent techno era output (albeit with the added warmth of head-in-the-clouds deep house).

Review: Having previously excelled at crafting party-starting bootleg funk remixes and composing revivalist soul slammers, Mr Bird has now decided to turn his attention to Afro-disco, Afro-funk and Afro-soul. Typically, the results are impressive, particularly "Dance Away", a hybrid Afro-disco/Afro-soul workout featuring the fine vocals of Chief Commander Yaaba. Elsewhere, he lays down a subtly housed-up take on Clavinet-happy Afro-funk (the superb, jazz-funk tinged "Floating Funk"), brilliantly breaks up the beats on the woozy, groovy and bustling "Carnival Beat", and lays blissful vocal harmonies over a sumptuous deep house beat on "The Sasquatch".

Review: Supreme edits from the one and only Mr K: "Boogie Land" explores the insane P-Funk gold of Ike Strong with full emphasis on the obese walking bassline, gutsy backing vocals and layered riffs, all extended with hypnotic glory. "Lady, Lady, Lady" is a dramatic rearrangement of the instrumental version of Boogie Man Orchestra where the pianos and strings are placed centre stage and squeezed for every ounce of drama and disco theatre. Insanely good.

Warm, touching with just the right amount of urgency, it's often overlooked as didn't enjoy a single release at the time. 2. Until You're Worth It (Mark E remix 1)
  3. Until You're Worth It (Andrew Weatherall remix)
Review: With Norwegian eccentrics Mungolian Jetset and Ost & Kjex involved, you'd expect "Until You're Worth It" - Belgian duo Mugwump's latest genre-swerving offering - to be a little on the quirky side. As expected, it is, though it's a far more polished, tactile and organic sounding cut than you may be expecting. Sparse, low-slung, warm and dubby, it features the Norwegian contingent singing over a wide-eyed, dubbed-out Balearic pop groove. It's great, as is Mark E's bubbling, heavily electronic remake. Best of all, though, is Andrew Weatherall's revision, which recasts the original as a heavyweight chunk of pitched-down, punk-funk influenced dub disco.

Review: There's no doubting that Idris Muhammad's "Could Heaven Ever Be Like This" is a stone-cold classic; a sparkling, heavenly chunk of dreamy, disco-era jazz-funk that's capable of reducing grown men and women to tears when played at the right time. Some could argue that it's so good that it shouldn't be tampered with. Late Nite Tuff Guy, a producer who previous for reworking classic cuts, clearly disagrees, because he's delivered a fresh 2018 revision. His version is actually rather reverential, subtly beefing up the bottom end to provide a little more a rolling disco feel while adding some easy-to-mix beats at the beginning. Otherwise, he's made use of all the key original instrumentation and should be applauded for his tasteful efforts.
