  4. Track 4 (6:24)
Review: Bim! The mysterious Mutable edits are back with the imprint's second release to date! "Track 1" is a majestic house-disco hybrid that's swung into action by the awesomeness of the steel drums panting down below, while "Track 2" uses the organ as its main weapon. On the B-side, "Track 3" provides a comforting wave of 303 acid, still at a mild-mannered tempo, and "Track 4" goes for the longer, more evocative disco swing that encapsulated so much of the 90s. Lush grooves!

  1. Arto Mwambe - "Noh Ngamebeo"
  2. The Exile Missile - "Ray Rider"
  3. Arto Mwambe - "BTWO"
Review: Having released a wonderful retrospective of the defunct Frankfurt label Brontosaurus across multiple formats last month, Permanent Vacation sneak out a little 12" shaped treat in the shape of this plate featuring tracks not featured on the Double LP edition. For the uninitiated, Brontosaurus was founded in 2006 by Thomas Sabrowsky, Phillip Lauer and Arto Mwambe's Christian BeiBwenger and is fondly remembered as the precursor to current Frankfurt institution Live At Robert Johnson. These addendum 12" features two sought after vinyl must haves from Arto Mwambe in "Noh Ngamebo" and "BTWO" plus the slow disco chugger and Prins Thomas favourite "Ray Rider" by The Exile Missile.

  5. Bingo (Cassius remix) (8:00)
  6. All Inclusive (Canblaster remix) (4:55)
  7. The Sun (Mooph 8-bit Cover) (3:31)
Review: Myd made his name a few years back by delivering a string of dancefloor hits that joined the dots between African rhythms, techno, electro and humid tropical instrumentation. All Inclusive, which appears on luscious transparent blue vinyl, is not only his first single for Ed Banger, but also a far more hazy, sun-kissed and pop-centric affair. In essence, the three original tracks - "The Sun", "Bingo" and "All Inclusive" - are breezy and louche affairs, mixing the producer's own drowsy vocals and gentle rhythms, tropical guitars and loved-up electronics. More club-ready reworks can be found on the flip, where Cassius stick a gargantuan bassline and UK steppers-inspired house drums beneath "Bingo" and Canblaster re-cast "All Inclusive" as a bouncy tropical house anthem.

Review: If you're seeking out respectful edits then look no further than New York City's Razor N Tape. JKriv and Aaron Dae now present to you Mytron & Ofofo (Les Yeux Orange, Multi Culti), the duo formed by Sasa Crnobrnja (In Flagranti) and Jacek Janiszewski. Their sonically ergonomic resplices here come in the form of "Beach Buggy" with its sleazy Italo conga funk, the late night slo-mo sexiness of "Midnight Drive" or "Capricorn" - the delightfully dark closer that's perfect for getting weird down in the Sameheads basement or Cocktail d'Amore's Cosmic Hole alike.

  1. Natasha Kitty Katt & Dennis Probert - "Master Of The Moon" (5:40)
  2. Edgarrr!
  3. Glitter In The Dark (6:17)
Review: Edinburgh's Natasha Kitty Katt has previously proved to be a more than reliable source of contemporary disco sleaze. Here she returns to action after a 12-month absence with another batch of throbbing, floor-friendly cuts. Chief amongst these is opener "Master of the Moon" - co-produced by regular collaborator (and daddy Kitty Katt) Dennis Probert - which elevates the Winners' underground disco classic "Ready For The Future" to dubbed-out new disco-house heights via new beats, synths and tons of trippy effects. It's a party-starting winner, all told. Similarly impressive is chunky and throbbing flipside "Glitter In The Dark", a bouncy dose of Italo-disco/house fusion rich in thrusting arpeggio bass, glassy-eyed synthesizer melodies and sweaty layered percussion.

Review: Given the runaway success of the recent reissue of DJ Nature's 1993 gem Necessary Ruffness Volume 1 - an early outing under the alternative Nature Boy alias that has long been regarded as a British deep house classic - it was inevitable that Volume Two would quickly follow. Like its predecessor, the EP is something of a cut-and-paste deep house treat, with the former Wild Bunch member wrapping vocal samples from classic disco, boogie and jazz-funk tunes around chunky, bass-heavy grooves. We're particularly enjoying the rolling late night pressure of "On Your Side", with its relentless bassline and fluttering Mystic Merlin samples, and the Dream II Science smoothness of "Relax Man", though the more disco-fired bounce of "Whatchusay (dubwize)" may well be the premier peak-time treat.

Drill Deep EP (yellow vinyl 12")
Cat: RNTR 017. Rel: 29 Mar 17
  1. Drill Deep (9:03)
  2. Instant Pressure (6:53)
  3. Keep On Keeping On (6:41)
Review: Brooklyn-based Razor 'N' Tape has some serious pulling-power these days. Having already released material from Dirtytwo, Mr V, Loz Goddard, Kraak & Smaak and Fouk, the New York imprint has managed to score an EP from Mister Saturday Night regular Nebraska. Predictably, it's a party-starting affair from start to finish. Bouncy, horn-heavy disco-house A-side "Drill Deep" - a weighty chunk of unashamed peak-time goodness - leads the way, with beatdown-tempo shuffler "Keep On Keeping On" snapping at its heels. This bubbles along tenderly via swirling disco orchestration, before bursting into life midway through thanks to the introduction of a sublime female vocal. "Instant Pressure", a chunkier, dub-flecked fusion of dewy-eyed soul and low-slung acid bass, is also superb.

  1. Pintxos (Session Victim remix)
  2. Rat Boogie (Mr Beatnick remix)
  3. Keep What Ya Got (Macel Vogel remix)
Review: Nebraska fires up his own Friends & Relations label once again to take a trip into the strain of lilting, summery deep house that has previously fitted in so well on Rush Hour, Mister Saturday Night and more. This time around Nebraska is getting the remix treatment from an all star cast, leading in with the woozy, soul-soaked shuffle of Session Victim's treatment of "Pintxos." Mr Beatnick keeps things suitably deep when tackling "Rat Boogie," all laid back disco patter and filtered funk, before Marcel Vogel goes one step further on "Keep What Ya Got" and rolls out slow and juicy funk of the raunchiest kind.

  3. Usin' Me (DJ Nature remix) (6:20)
  4. Usin' Me (The Revenge remix) (6:24)
Review: You can always rely on New York's Razor-N-Tape for high quality respectful edits. Cut in Brooklyn, here's another disco killer that is great for dancing - courtesy of JKriv & Aaron Dae out now via their Reserve imprint is Londoner Ali Gibbs aka Nebraska, who tweaks a soulful sample with signature finesse; it's part disco, part house and all vibes on "Usin' Me". Lovebirds then get in on the action to deliver a soulful and bittersweet early Chicago house perspective, the legendary DJ Nature never fails to deliver either and gets properly deep and emotive with his terrific remix. As does Scottish veteran The Revenge on the flip, taking the track into the late night on his stellar effort.

  3. In Search Of The Dream (feat Angela Johnson - Lay-Far remix) (6:36)
  4. Distorting Space Time (Fouk remix) (6:56)
Review: The veteran producer's latest EP, in which a quartet of highly regarded producers tinker with tracks from his vast catalogue, contains some real gems. Top of the pile is Ron Trent's rework of "Distorting Space Time", which is not only typically warm, woozy and percussion rich, but also makes great use of some decidedly trippy, delay style effects. Elsewhere, Crackazat grins his way towards piano house anthem territory via an arms-aloft revision of "Latican Boogie", Lay-Far joins the dots between jazz-funk, boogie and sumptuous deep house on a delightful rework of "In Search of the Dream" and Fouk successfully breaks up the beats on a jazzy and bass-heavy mix of "Distorting Space Time".

Joey NEGRO presents RWL
Circles (12")
Cat: DAYS 023. Rel: 23 Feb 18
  1. Circles (Joey Negro extended Disco mix) (8:12)
  2. Everybody Dance (Joey Negro Revibe) (6:03)
Review: This tasty 12" serves as a kind of vinyl appendix to Joey Negro's Remixed With Love albums. It contains two more tracks re-built from the original studio multi-track tapes. Perhaps the headline attraction is the flipside "re-vibe" of Chic's "Everybody Dance", which the veteran British producer turns into a joyous chunk of dub disco full of echoing effects, Reflex style instrumental breakdowns and Idjuts-esque beats. Arguably even better, though, is his A-side version of Atlantic Starr's "Circles", a Southport Weekender favourite that the Z Records boss has turned into a life-affirming, string-drenched disco epic. It has great sing-along potential when played at the right time, to the right crowd.

  3. Gwen McCrae - "Keep The Fire Burning" (JN Special dub #3) (6:49)
  4. Wardell Piper - "The Power Of Love" (JN Power Of The Boogie mix) (7:11)
Review: Thanks to soaring demand on the second-hand market, Joey Negro has decided to re-press this killer collection of disco remixes that originally appeared on a limited-edition Record Store Day release. All four were created, but not released, during the making of his superb Remixed With Love albums. The A-side boasts two versions of Lonnie Liston Smith classic "Space Princess"; an epic, peak-time disco revision and a brilliant beats version (the "Break Mix"") that consists of little more than punchy percussion, trippy effects and bags of energy. Turn to the flip for Negro's impeccably delay-laden, New York style dub of Gwen McCrae's "Keep The Fire Burning" and a spine-tingling, sing-along rearrangement of Wardell Piper's lesser-celebrated disco-boogie classic "The Power of Love".

Review: The Super Disco Edits camp have pulled off something of a coup here, securing the rights to a previously unissued 1987 cut from studio duo New Jersey Connection, whose sole 1981 single, "Love Don't Come Easy", has long been a favourite of boogie DJs. "Red Light Green Light", featuring the breezy vocals of Cynthia Wilson, sounds like a long lost boogie classic: all sugary-sweet backing vocals, rubbery bass guitar, twinkling '80s soul synthesizer melodies and punchy drum machine percussion. The A-side vocal version is accompanied by a tasty instrumental mix, in which the focus switches to the NJ twosome's superb production. File under: "must have".

Review: The Chordz EP brings it with 3 hot new modern Boogie tracks.

Label Hero Newman opens the release with the title track 'Chordz' - a synth-fuelled dancefloor banger, reminiscent of Harvey Sutherland's recent work. Flip it over and Ourra (aka Simon Tappenden aka 'Pop Out N Play') brings us a truly Tropical treat reminiscent of Palm Trees, Pina Coladas and 80's Miami sunsets. Last but not least, Keyboardist for Brian Ellis, Adam Chini plays 'Horizons of Funk'... a lush down tempo synth funk number bringing the EP to the perfect close.

  1. Lifeforce Theme (6:14)
  2. Recordnition (7:28)
Review: Pumping disco funk from decorated digger Nick The Record. "Lifeforce Theme" pays homage to the Japanese party collective he's been with since the early 90s (and played at Japan's first ever outdoor rave with, no less) Loose and rugged but primed with a lavish sense of piano luxury, there's a deep drive and firm uplift that instantly grabs attention. "Recordnition" is a much more heads-down in its nature and focus as we're pulled in by the hypnotic percussion, worming wah wahs and sharp blasts of flutes. As always with Nick, the floor is the foremost focus.

Review: Father & Son Records And Tapes have already had a strong 2016 with releases from Naphta, DJ Sajko and Das Komplex, and now the Polish label rounds off the year with a stunning album of style-spanning wares from Niemoc. Paramaribo is the first physical release for the emergent artist, and it sports all manner of instrumentation feeding into a wholesome, heartwarming whole. There's a danceable pulse propelling these tracks, and the likes of "Lustro" head more overtly into club territory, but by and large this is an album of plaintive melodics to tug at the heart as much as the feet.

Review: A seminal 81/83 record that epitomised so many sounds and melting pots: synth wave, Italo, New Romantic, electro, proto house... The list of worlds this groundbreaking song traversed is remarkable. Here Dark Entries compile the four versions that were cut during its two key release phases on GC Recordings in 1981 and 1983 in all their remastered glory. Smouldering, moody and still relevant to so much going on musically, this is true piece of history.

Review: Fizzy boogie from Minneapolis circa 1982; Nobody cut through with a raw, energetic sound and countered with soothing, evocative soul that shimmers with their gospel roots. "I Saw You" sits somewhere between Prince and Rick James but polished with super freaky female front vocals, it's wholly unique and backs up the first pressing's pricetag of $500. "Heaven's Love" is the perfect counter with its emphatic harmonies and stately instrumentation. A serious timepiece from AOTN.

Review: Slo-mo, steamy and sexy... Those three words could sum up pretty much every excellent Smokecloud release, but these three tracks are purpose built for the more sensual sessions you might wish to soundtrack. Each one purrs with low-end sultriness while shimmering with all the disco motifs we've come to expect from such a discerning label. Noodleman's "That Word Again" finds inspiration in the German quarters, Sleazy McQueen devilishly teases us with vocal fractures buried deep under a throbbing bass groove and finally Osmose brings us to the most hypnotic close possible with a bed of dubbed out percussion and otherworldly loops that build and twist. Ready for bed yet?

  2. Stand On The Horizon (Todd Terje extended mix)
Review: A collaboration between Franz Ferdinand and Todd Terje? Not the most obvious of partnerships, but it certainly works. Franz Ferdinand's post-punk tendencies get extended and polished with Nordic cosmic charm and the result are two timeless, dubbed out exercises in deep funk. "Evil Eye" looks up to the sky with euphoric stomps and wistful synth licks while "Stand On The Horizon" cuts loose with more of an angular swagger. A really interesting departure for Franz Ferdinand, Todd Terje and Domino.

Review: Biff! It's the devilish sounds of the NY Underground edits coming through with their fourth chapter of the series and, as per usual, it's a handsome dose of deep, murky editing tied together by a driving electronic sound. "Track 1" sounds like some Loft-era Walter Gibbons gold, revamped and beefed up with yet more synth trickery, while "Track 2" is a looped-up version of a disco classic, and "Track 3" slows it all down to a dub-filtered, bass-heavy slammer which is our pick of the lot - those drums yo!

The lineup at the time comprised of Eddie Levert, William Powell and Walter Williams, It was written and composed by Anthony Jackson, Leon Huff & Kenneth Gamble, and produced on the latter's Philadelphia International Records. The original pressing was issued as a single in late 1973 with "People Keep Tellin' Me" as its B-side. The single peaked at number three on the U.S. Billboard R&B chart, and at No. 9 on Billboard's Pop Singles chart in spring 1974. Now unleashing his 'weirdo disco' style where he packs his studio creations within a tidy, 10" format on a double-header with "Candies" on the A-side: which is a cheeky little boogie down jam on the deeper tip. Review: Ray Mang's slick disco stable Mangled calls upon a new pair of provocateurs to lay down a sun-kissed steamer to blow away those winter blues. The agents in question are Josefin Ohrn and The Liberation, and their "Mang Dynasty" is every inch the Balearic idyll rendered in a long form discoid jam. The extended version on the A side fully floats out into gently psychedelic waters guided by Ohrn's infectious hook, "I've got you rushing through my mind." For those who just want the groove there's the instrumental mix available as well, or you can always plump for the radio edit if time is short.
