  1. Until You're Worth It (original version)
  2. Until You're Worth It (Mark E remix 1)
  3. Until You're Worth It (Andrew Weatherall remix)
Review: With Norwegian eccentrics Mungolian Jetset and Ost & Kjex involved, you'd expect "Until You're Worth It" - Belgian duo Mugwump's latest genre-swerving offering - to be a little on the quirky side. As expected, it is, though it's a far more polished, tactile and organic sounding cut than you may be expecting. Sparse, low-slung, warm and dubby, it features the Norwegian contingent singing over a wide-eyed, dubbed-out Balearic pop groove. It's great, as is Mark E's bubbling, heavily electronic remake. Best of all, though, is Andrew Weatherall's revision, which recasts the original as a heavyweight chunk of pitched-down, punk-funk influenced dub disco.

  1. Could Heaven Ever Be Like This (Late Nite Tuff Guy remix) (7:33)
  2. Could Heaven Ever Be Like This (8:36)
Review: There's no doubting that Idris Muhammad's "Could Heaven Ever Be Like This" is a stone-cold classic; a sparkling, heavenly chunk of dreamy, disco-era jazz-funk that's capable of reducing grown men and women to tears when played at the right time. Some could argue that it's so good that it shouldn't be tampered with. Late Nite Tuff Guy, a producer who previous for reworking classic cuts, clearly disagrees, because he's delivered a fresh 2018 revision. His version is actually rather reverential, subtly beefing up the bottom end to provide a little more a rolling disco feel while adding some easy-to-mix beats at the beginning. Otherwise, he's made use of all the key original instrumentation and should be applauded for his tasteful efforts.

  1. Boogie To The Top (Young Pulse rework) (10:04)
  2. Boogie To The Top (Disco version) (10:32)
Review: Idris Muhammad was known more as an American jazz drummer who recorded extensively with many musicians, including Ahmad Jamal, Lou Donaldson, Pharoah Sanders and Tete Montoliu - but released the irresistible and life affirming dico jam "Boogie To The Top" back in 1978. Young Pulse steps up on the B-side, adding his own subtle touches and tweaks to the original by looping the guitar and echoing out the vocals, whilst working in more of the synth lines. He keeps the original feel intact, whilst revitalising it for 2018.

  1. Jacuzzi Rollercoaster (feat Ali Love) (6:44)
  2. Can't Hang On (6:07)
Review: There's no doubt that Roisin Murphy struck gold when she joined forces with Maurice Fulton earlier this year. The pair's latest single - the third in the series, if our calculations are correct - is another quirky disco classic in the making. Smooth title track "Jacuzzi Rollercoaster" features Murphy's distinctive lead vocal and Fulton's trademark instrumentation (rubbery bass guitar, flash-fried funk guitar flourishes, loose beats and mangled Clavinet motifs) being bolstered by some slick, soulful backing vocals courtesy of Ali Love. B-side "Can't Hang On" tips a wink to Fulton's eccentric house project Syclops - or his productions for spouse Mu, for that matter - with a squidgy acid bassline, madcap electronics and wild percussion solos combining to devastating effect.

Play Thing (12")
Cat: VF291-2. Rel: 04 Jul 18
  1. Play Thing (6:06)
  2. Like (6:35)
Review: If her social media posts are anything to go by, Roisin Murphy is more than a little frustrated. She's particularly irritated by the lack of media coverage for her new series of singles on Vinyl Factory, all of which were produced by the mighty Maurice Fulton. Listening to this second volume in the series, it seems remarkable that more hasn't been written about the series. "Play Thing", in particular, is a triumph - a jaunty, inventive and next-level chunk of Clavinet and piano-sporting dancefloor disco-pop that sounds as good blaring out of car stereos as it does beefy club sound systems. Flipside "Like", a slower and more trippy affair built around the kind of wonky synthesizer bass line normally found on one of Fulton's Syclops records, is similarly special.

  3. Once Upon A Grind (6:16)
  4. Parabel (7:32)
Review: Shimmering slow-mo soul from Berlin's Luca Musto. Smoky, unhurried and loaded with delicate emotion, it's another Balearic motherload as we're plunged into foggy trumpets and jazzy swirls on "Let Me Down", immersed in whirling reverse tones and dusty Bonoboesque haziness on "Once Upon A Grind" and taken on a bluesy one-way trip to Norway on "Parabel". Loire's deep chug remix seals the deal. Stunning.

  4. Stereocalypse - "The Cunning Man" (6:14)
Review: Love is in the air once again at Innervisions HQ as the label welcomes three new names for an all-out hug-heavy mystic disco and Italo free-for-all. Musumeci and Phunkadelica take the A with two steam powered sojourns; "Babilonia" is a late night trip across the Sahara through the desert fog, destination unknown while "Velluto Blu" rewinds to 85 with deep electrofunk tendrils. Flip for freshness from Italians Stereocalypse. Not just a clever name; the duo flesh their disco stripes with glee on the slap bass popping "Lone Solo Drummer" before closing with a soaring Italo space trip that's comparable to "The Chase" but with 2018 beefy production. Smoochy smoochy.

Review: This is the third EP from the Mutable label out of Australia, featuring four more edits and over-dubbed cuts by this mysterious artist. On the A side, they take a salvia soaked stroll through sweaty disco shamanism, followed by a soca influenced scorcher. The oddball grooves continue on the flip: with a persuasively pokey paean to North Africa, followed by an uptempo synth powered wig-flipper!

Review: Bim! The mysterious Mutable edits are back with the imprint's second release to date! "Track 1" is a majestic house-disco hybrid that's swung into action by the awesomeness of the steel drums panting down below, while "Track 2" uses the organ as its main weapon. On the B-side, "Track 3" provides a comforting wave of 303 acid, still at a mild-mannered tempo, and "Track 4" goes for the longer, more evocative disco swing that encapsulated so much of the 90s. Lush grooves!

Review: Having released a wonderful retrospective of the defunct Frankfurt label Brontosaurus across multiple formats last month, Permanent Vacation sneak out a little 12" shaped treat in the shape of this plate featuring tracks not featured on the Double LP edition. For the uninitiated, Brontosaurus was founded in 2006 by Thomas Sabrowsky, Phillip Lauer and Arto Mwambe's Christian BeiBwenger and is fondly remembered as the precursor to current Frankfurt institution Live At Robert Johnson. These addendum 12" features two sought after vinyl must haves from Arto Mwambe in "Noh Ngamebo" and "BTWO" plus the slow disco chugger and Prins Thomas favourite "Ray Rider" by The Exile Missile.

Big juicy synths that flap and fold over a nicely slouched groove; this will aid and abet many people looking to lose their minds this summer. "Sun" is also fittingly titled thanks to its premium vibrancy and latent feels (not to mention a wry bit of slap bass) Remix-wise Tronik Youth get all dubbed out on "Spacetak" while Jonny Sender whips us back to early 2000s City Rockers vibes with some superb use of the trumpet elements. Review: Edinburgh's Natasha Kitty Katt has previously proved to be a more than reliable source of contemporary disco sleaze. Here she returns to action after a 12-month absence with another batch of throbbing, floor-friendly cuts. Chief amongst these is opener "Master of the Moon" - co-produced by regular collaborator (and daddy Kitty Katt) Dennis Probert - which elevates the Winners' underground disco classic "Ready For The Future" to dubbed-out new disco-house heights via new beats, synths and tons of trippy effects. It's a party-starting winner, all told. Similarly impressive is chunky and throbbing flipside "Glitter In The Dark", a bouncy dose of Italo-disco/house fusion rich in thrusting arpeggio bass, glassy-eyed synthesizer melodies and sweaty layered percussion.

Review: Given the runaway success of the recent reissue of DJ Nature's 1993 gem Necessary Ruffness Volume 1 - an early outing under the alternative Nature Boy alias that has long been regarded as a British deep house classic - it was inevitable that Volume Two would quickly follow. Like its predecessor, the EP is something of a cut-and-paste deep house treat, with the former Wild Bunch member wrapping vocal samples from classic disco, boogie and jazz-funk tunes around chunky, bass-heavy grooves. We're particularly enjoying the rolling late night pressure of "On Your Side", with its relentless bassline and fluttering Mystic Merlin samples, and the Dream II Science smoothness of "Relax Man", though the more disco-fired bounce of "Whatchusay (dubwize)" may well be the premier peak-time treat.

Review: You can always rely on New York's Razor-N-Tape for high quality respectful edits. Cut in Brooklyn, here's another disco killer that is great for dancing - courtesy of JKriv & Aaron Dae out now via their Reserve imprint is Londoner Ali Gibbs aka Nebraska, who tweaks a soulful sample with signature finesse; it's part disco, part house and all vibes on "Usin' Me". Lovebirds then get in on the action to deliver a soulful and bittersweet early Chicago house perspective, the legendary DJ Nature never fails to deliver either and gets properly deep and emotive with his terrific remix. As does Scottish veteran The Revenge on the flip, taking the track into the late night on his stellar effort.

  1. Drill Deep (9:03)
  2. Instant Pressure (6:53)
  3. Keep On Keeping On (6:41)
Review: Brooklyn-based Razor 'N' Tape has some serious pulling-power these days. Having already released material from Dirtytwo, Mr V, Loz Goddard, Kraak & Smaak and Fouk, the New York imprint has managed to score an EP from Mister Saturday Night regular Nebraska. Predictably, it's a party-starting affair from start to finish. Bouncy, horn-heavy disco-house A-side "Drill Deep" - a weighty chunk of unashamed peak-time goodness - leads the way, with beatdown-tempo shuffler "Keep On Keeping On" snapping at its heels. This bubbles along tenderly via swirling disco orchestration, before bursting into life midway through thanks to the introduction of a sublime female vocal. "Instant Pressure", a chunkier, dub-flecked fusion of dewy-eyed soul and low-slung acid bass, is also superb.

Review: Nebraska fires up his own Friends & Relations label once again to take a trip into the strain of lilting, summery deep house that has previously fitted in so well on Rush Hour, Mister Saturday Night and more. This time around Nebraska is getting the remix treatment from an all star cast, leading in with the woozy, soul-soaked shuffle of Session Victim's treatment of "Pintxos." Mr Beatnick keeps things suitably deep when tackling "Rat Boogie," all laid back disco patter and filtered funk, before Marcel Vogel goes one step further on "Keep What Ya Got" and rolls out slow and juicy funk of the raunchiest kind.

Review: The veteran producer's latest EP, in which a quartet of highly regarded producers tinker with tracks from his vast catalogue, contains some real gems. Top of the pile is Ron Trent's rework of "Distorting Space Time", which is not only typically warm, woozy and percussion rich, but also makes great use of some decidedly trippy, delay style effects. Elsewhere, Crackazat grins his way towards piano house anthem territory via an arms-aloft revision of "Latican Boogie", Lay-Far joins the dots between jazz-funk, boogie and sumptuous deep house on a delightful rework of "In Search of the Dream" and Fouk successfully breaks up the beats on a jazzy and bass-heavy mix of "Distorting Space Time".

Cat: DAYS 023. Rel: 23 Feb 18
  1. Circles (Joey Negro extended Disco mix) (8:12)
  2. Everybody Dance (Joey Negro Revibe) (6:03)
Review: This tasty 12" serves as a kind of vinyl appendix to Joey Negro's Remixed With Love albums. It contains two more tracks re-built from the original studio multi-track tapes. Perhaps the headline attraction is the flipside "re-vibe" of Chic's "Everybody Dance", which the veteran British producer turns into a joyous chunk of dub disco full of echoing effects, Reflex style instrumental breakdowns and Idjuts-esque beats. Arguably even better, though, is his A-side version of Atlantic Starr's "Circles", a Southport Weekender favourite that the Z Records boss has turned into a life-affirming, string-drenched disco epic. It has great sing-along potential when played at the right time, to the right crowd.

Review: Thanks to soaring demand on the second-hand market, Joey Negro has decided to re-press this killer collection of disco remixes that originally appeared on a limited-edition Record Store Day release. All four were created, but not released, during the making of his superb Remixed With Love albums. The A-side boasts two versions of Lonnie Liston Smith classic "Space Princess"; an epic, peak-time disco revision and a brilliant beats version (the "Break Mix"") that consists of little more than punchy percussion, trippy effects and bags of energy. Turn to the flip for Negro's impeccably delay-laden, New York style dub of Gwen McCrae's "Keep The Fire Burning" and a spine-tingling, sing-along rearrangement of Wardell Piper's lesser-celebrated disco-boogie classic "The Power of Love".

Review: Best Records are always a trusted source of reissued obscurities, but they've really outdone themselves this time. New Horizon was a one-off studio project from NYC buried in the annals of 70s disco funk, supposedly helmed by Donald Jenkins, but the chances of finding this mythical record were less than zero before now. "You" is a sumptuous jam, where each player shines in equal measure from the limber bass to the gossamer keys and stirring singers. This is soul jazz of the highest order, so very worthy of a reissue not least in its "Special Disco" guise. The vocal-less cut on the flip is just as wonderful, spinning a web of instrumentation that peaks with a wild guitar solo.

"Red Light Green Light", featuring the breezy vocals of Cynthia Wilson, sounds like a long lost boogie classic: all sugary-sweet backing vocals, rubbery bass guitar, twinkling '80s soul synthesizer melodies and punchy drum machine percussion. The A-side vocal version is accompanied by a tasty instrumental mix, in which the focus switches to the NJ twosome's superb production. File under: "must have".

  3. Chini - "Horizons Of Funk"
Review: The Chordz EP brings it with 3 hot new modern Boogie tracks.

Label Hero Newman opens the release with the title track 'Chordz' - a synth-fuelled dancefloor banger, reminiscent of Harvey Sutherland's recent work. Flip it over and Ourra (aka Simon Tappenden aka 'Pop Out N Play') brings us a truly Tropical treat reminiscent of Palm Trees, Pina Coladas and 80's Miami sunsets. Last but not least, Keyboardist for Brian Ellis, Adam Chini plays 'Horizons of Funk'... a lush down tempo synth funk number bringing the EP to the perfect close.
