You Can't Have Your Cake & Eat It Too (reissue)
Cat: WES 22149WHITE. Rel: 18 Jun 20
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. You Can't Have Your Cake & Eat It Too (vocal) (5:57)
  2. You Can't Have Your Cake & Eat It Too (instrumental Cake mix) (6:50)
  3. You Can't Have Your Cake & Eat It Too (6:27)
Review: The Westend treasure trove seems as deep as Mary Poppins' bag once you start digging into it. This latest trick is from 1982 and has a real sense of humour as well as standout piano playing, joyful up beat vibes and powerful drums. As vocalist Taylor and her backing singers keep remind us throughout, we can't have it both ways when it comes to love, but we can have this song as a way to get over any romantic troubles. It comes with a vocal, instrumental and original mix that all offer slightly different but equally great variations.

West End Edits: Greg Wilson
Cat: WEBMG 08. Rel: 01 Nov 18
Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. BT (Brenda Taylor) - "You Can't Have Your Cake & Eat It Too" (Greg Wilson edit) (9:08)
  2. Forrrce - "Keep On Dubbin'" (Greg Wilson edit) (5:17)
  3. Raw Silk - "Do It To The Music" (Greg Wilson edit) (6:37)
  4. Shirley Lites - "Heat You Up" (Melt Down mix - Greg Wilson edit) (7:19)
Review: West End's double-pack re-edit series continues, with long-standing UK electrofunk hero and scalpel rework specialist Greg Wilson sharing a quartet of revisions. There are airings for two of Wilson's most sought-after scalpel works from the "Credit To The Edit" series - superb versions of Brenda Taylor's "You Can't Have Your Cake and Eat It Too" and Raw Silk's "Do It To The Music" - as well as a couple of previously heard rearrangements that are on-point as per usual. Wilson first adds even more mind-altering delays and low-slung dub disco flavour to Forrrce's "Keep On Dubbin'", before superbly stretching out the mostly instrumental "Melt Down Mix" of Shirley Lites' synth-laden peak-time classic "Heat You Up".

Fly Away EP (remastered)
Cat: WES 1036. Rel: 07 Apr 17
Deep House
  1. It's The Life (original mix) (8:03)
  2. Illumination (Theo Parrish Sound Signature mix) (7:41)
  3. Fly Away (West End Blue mix) (8:34)
  4. Fly Away (West End Lounge mix) (4:24)
Review: Second time around for Detroit deep house outfit The Kings of Late Night's 2005 Fly Away EP, which originally appeared on the West End Blue imprint. With Billy Love's sumptuous vocals to the fore, there's much to enjoy throughout - not least the organic, undulating, live deep house warmth of sublime opener "It's The Life". Theo Parrish's Sound Signature Remix of "Illumination" - ultra-deep, jazzy, spaced-out and hypnotic - remains one of the Detroit producer's greatest reworks. On the flip, beatdown pioneer Norm Talley takes on remix duties to deliver two contrasting versions of "Fly Away". There's the sparse, jazzy and intricately programmed West End Blue Mix, and the slightly smoother West End Lounge Mix, where Love's immaculate vocals take centre stage.
