Review: Italo-Disco, (at times abbreviated as Italo) is a music genre which originated in Italy and was mainly produced from the late 1970s to the late 1980s. The origin strongly tied to marketing efforts of the ZYX record label, which began licensing and marketing the music outside Italy in 1982. The genre faded in the early 1990s.

Italo disco evolved from the then-current dance music (including hi-NRG) and developed into a diverse genre. The genre employs drum machines, synthesizers, occasionally vocoders and usually sung in English.

This compilation contains some of the long lost tracks of the genre restored for the first time on CD. Vivien Vee "Remember" and Capricorn "I Need Love," are early work by Italian pioneer Claudio Simonetti (Goblin). All tracks digitally remastered along with its booklet, the original artwork and the original recording and extended versions.

Review: Brooklyn record distributor Atypical-dopeness offer the next edition in Joaquin Joe Claussell's Unofficial Edits & Overdubs series. Following a four-tracker of largely unnamed tracks released in 2020, Iboga continues the series, this time with an iterative avatar to top up Claussell's ever-moving house continuum. Claussell's output has lately taken on an ancestral turn, influenced by the hallucinations caused by chewing the roots of an iboga plant, a chemico-spiritual fixture of initiation ceremonies found across Central Africa (whether Claussell actually did take ibogaine isn't clear). What we do know is that, in dialogue with his heritage, Claussell found himself inspired by these initiatory rituals and so set about producing this eleven-track heart-rouser, fusing the overdubbed recorded sounds of Gabon, Cameroon and Congo with his own summative, spiritual, salubrious house sound.

Review: Up there with other shoegaze trailblazers like Lush, My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive, Pale Saints set the bar for dreamy, eerie and atmospheric guitar music and have influenced countless bands sketching out similar sounds since. This third album of theirs, which is now getting the full re-release treatment after being long out of print, saw them achieve new pop heights. The three-minute banger 'Angel (Will You Be My)' and 'Under Your Nose' are particularly strong in this regard, with singer Meriel Barham sounding like she laid the foundation for what The Orielles would go on to become. Elsewhere, 'Henry' - a more than ten-minute epic - shows a more harrowing, dark side of theirs with slow and tuned down tones leaning more towards sludge metal. Pale Saints' ability to express themselves so diversely puts them up there as hallowed forefathers of shoegaze who will never lose relevance.

Review: New York's Billy Woods is not just a rapper but a confronter of disavowed, barbaric truths, where the sordid, postcolonial gluts of American oligarchy are refracted through an excoriating, critical and surreal lens. Review: Last year, the Hartnoll brothers gave their debut album, 1991's 'Green Album' (officially simply titled Orbital) the deluxe reissue treatment, offering an expanded quadruple CD edition backed with a detail-packed hardback book. They've now moved on to its similarly superb sequel (the 'Brown Album') from 1993. It gets a similar treatment, with a freshly remastered version of the original album (CD1) being joined by two discs of single versions, B-sides, remixes and 'Peel Session' cuts (including legendary Underworld and Psychik Warriors Ov Gaia takes on 'Lush 3', and the duo's own originally US-only extension of 'Impact'), and a fourth CD containing a previously unreleased live recording from the Limelight in New York in 1992. Review: Stereolab have somehow transcended into alt music royalty and are often cited by some of the most adventurous music listeners in the world as one of the top bands. This release is their first in 15 years, which in many ways is more exciting as absence makes the heart grow fonder. The album before this - Not Music - came out in 2010. They announced this album with the cut 'Aerial Troubles', which was originally sent to fans and music journalists as a 7" titled Unsolicited Stereolab Material. A nice surprise to have in the post, but with no real context. Now we know that it's the bouncy, oddly danceable second track on the album. In terms of layering and building of sonic worlds, few fare better than Stereolab and they also have an ear for a hook, bringing in indie and experimental music fans to a common cause.

Review: After Robert Grey's 1990 exit, Wire morphed into WIR, a project designed to wrap up their Mute Records contract with a stripped-down, sequencer-led approach. Graham Lewis took lead vocals while the band reworked their own back catalogue. A chance to reflect on what had been, as opposed to what was yet to be, WIR's lifespan was brief, with only a handful of shows and two conceptual events dubbed I Saw You In Clapham (April 1992) and Vienna (February 1993) rolled into the ensuing campaign. On the Vienna trip, they recorded a sprawling 25-minute session for Austria's ORF, curated by Peter Rehberg of MEGO fame, released by Touch in 1996. This 2025 remaster adds a fresh take on their darkest pop moment, 'So & Slow', reimagined in a live-inspired arrangement with a nod to Taylor Swift's re-recording style.

Review: There's a strong argument to be made that 1993's Orbital II, popularly known as 'The Brown Album', is the Hartnoll brothers' finest single album - a sublime fusion of bustling breakbeats, heady vocal samples (many provided by then unknown vocalist Alison Goldfrapp), twisted acid lines, memorable melodic motifs, and rush-inducing breakdowns. Here reissued in remastered and expanded form, the set - which includes fan favourites 'Lush 3', 'Halcyon' and the superb 'Impact (The Earth is Burning)' the album sounds as fresh and forthright as ever. This time round, it includes a second CD featuring key cuts from the two-part 'Raddicio' EP (including two takes on the Scott Walker-sampling 'The Naked & The Dead') and superb revisions of Lush 3 by Underworld and Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia.

Review: Wire's formative late-70s run gets the 7" treatment with Nine Sevens, a box of nine vinyl singles spanning 1977 to 1980. Remastered from original analogues, the set pulls together six Harvest-era sides, one from Rough Trade, an unreleased 1980 session, plus the hard-to-find 154 bonus EP - all wrapped in replica artwork and housed in a sharp Bruce Gilbert-designed box. We follow Wire's rapid evolution from clipped punk minimalism into stranger, shiftier terrains, where terse, abrasive, and knowingly off-centre master-demos abrade the ears like rusty scalers. Each 7" sees a staggered digital release, but these tracks won't be lumped into any retrospective, making this the only way to get the full physical set.

Review: After almost three decades, Kompakt Records is set to deliver its' 500th release - a ridiculously impressive landmark that few electronic labels have previously achieved. To mark the occasion, the Cologne-based imprint has decided to deliver an anniversary compilation featuring (mostly edited) versions of some of its most iconic club hits, underground gems and early obscurities. It does a terrific job in explaining, via music, the label's contribution to European electronic music culture - think 'maximalist' minimal, off-kilter tech-house, ambient pop, synth-heavy hypnotism and twisted, off-kilter nu-disco. Naturally, all of the label's most significant contributors are present (Superpitcher, Justus Kohncke, Robag Wruhme, Gas, The Orb, Jurgen Paape etc), alongside artists you probably didn't realise had released on the label.

Review: Imagine you're in for a long car journey and can only take one Suede album, which one do you take? Well, this is the one, really. Reissued as an expanded 3CD set, it features all their best b-sides from the hallowed first three albums (Suede (1993), Dog Man Star (1994) and Coming Up (1996), plus a further 19 B-sides and extra tracks from 1999 to 2023. It's the extra, latter day era numbers that are getting a standalone release on vinyl for Record Store Day as Sci-Fi Lullabies Vol.2, but with this CD set you get everything lumped in together as a bumper package. The tracklist is ridiculous: 'The Sadness in You, the Sadness in Me' from 2022 is a power ballad that could stir the most stoic of hearts. 'Another No One' is a slow, achingly beautiful and melancholy number and 'Europe Is Our Playground' - clearly written pre-Brexit - celebrates a golden Schengen era: "From Spain to Camber Sands/Europe is our playground."

Review: Robert Smith has always treated remixing less like revision, more like ritual i a habit that's followed him since his days in Crawley, West Sussex and then surfacing officially on the first Cure remix album, 1990's Mixed Up. This triple-disc release of reworkings from the band's latest LP Songs of a Lost World feels assembled with obsessive care, mapping out every possible mood lurking beneath the surface. There are club-ready flips, yes i Sally C, Danny Briottet and Gregor Tresher all push the rhythm forward i but they sit beside glacial pieces that feel more like haunted sketches than reworks. Mura Masa's take on 'All I Ever Am' is disintegrated almost beyond recognition, its vocal a flickering memory. Mogwai's 'Endsong' feels like the end of the world in slow motion. Even Chino Moreno turns in something striking i 'WarSong' morphs into a sludgy howl with heat-warped edges. But it's the sequencing that surprises: these aren't bolted together, but grouped in arcs, as though Smith were arranging the bones of an old idea into something still alive. Four Tet's version of 'Alone' is a high point i deeply textured but featherlight. Like all The Cure's output, what really matters is the feeling of being drawn somewhere, and Smith's hand never letting go.

Review: More than four decades after he first appeared in smudged eyeliner and a mop of jet-black hair, Robert Smith is still finding new ways to pull his music apart and stitch it back together. This new remix collection i assembled and curated by Smith himself i feels less like a victory lap and more like a restless dissection of a legacy he's still actively shaping. The collaborators here are hardly incidental: Four Tet, Orbital, Ame, Chino Moreno, Mura Masa, Trentemoller, Mogwai. It reads like a list built by someone still hungrily tuned into the present, not stuck in the past. And true to form, the results are all over the place i a feature, not a flaw. Some tracks lean into grandeur: Paul Oakenfold's take on 'I Can Never Say Goodbye' opens with all the sweeping melodrama you'd expect, while Daybreakers stretch 'WarSong' into widescreen synthwork. Elsewhere, Shanti Celeste and Ex-Easter Island Head bring a strange intimacy to 'Alone', teasing out its ache with a different kind of spaciousness. At times, you wonder if Smith enjoys seeing how far his work can be bent before it breaks. But it never does i even filtered through others' hands, his sense of tension, drama and deep emotional unease holds everything together.

Review: Originally issued in skeletal form as a CD-R in 2004 and completed posthumously by Peter Christopherson and Danny Hyde in 2006, this reissue captures Coil's final studio-era transformation i leaner, sharper and pulled into strange rhythmic shapes by live performance energy and Ableton-era experimentation. The Weston-super-Mare collective, once studio-bound, now wrangle blown-out beats, sampled horns and hurdy-gurdy into ceremonial, fractured pop. 'The Gimp (Sometimes)' and 'Teenage Lightning (10th Birthday Version)' hum with unstable joy; 'Sex With Sun Ra (Part One - Saturnalia)' becomes a dense, writhing invocation; its sequel folds in eerie pipe drones and Christopherson's heavy edits. The 'Wraiths and Strays' pair trace the evolution from rehearsal to stage, adding field recordings, live vocals and modular sprawl. Even their lullaby cover, 'All the Pretty Little Horses', feels raw and revelatory. This is Coil at their most vulnerable and direct, embracing rhythm and song form without compromising strangeness i a defiant, dreamlike document of a band pushing forward even as time ran out.

Review: Throbbing Gristle co-founder and all round British experimental electronic institution, Cosey Fanni Tutti returns with 2t2, a new full-length set for release through her own Conspiracy International label. The new nine-tracker extends the tracked terrains of 2019's Tutti, blurring personal reflections on years of loss and upheaval into prosthetic electronic soundscapes. The record unfolds over two contrasting halves, one beat-driven, the other more introspective, yet it also keeps anchored to a certain ground point emphasising resilience and focus. Lead cut 'Stound' features overtone chanting, which Cosey describes as a way to channel inner strength: "allowing the sounds to permeate and soothe as well as create a sense of power."

Review: This 2024 edition of Lament by Ultravox is a comprehensive, end-all-others 7CD + DVD deluxe edition expander including a (you won't believe) 72 tracks, with a newly remastered version of the album alongside a fresh 1980s-style extended remix. The seventh studio album by British new wave pioneers, Lament marked the final appearance of original drummer Warren Cann until the band's reunion in 2012 with Brilliant. But despite the name and the grievous context, the album was hardly lachrymose in sound, and it achieved much commercial success, owing to a prosperous prior experience with producers Conny Plank and George Martin, who drove its lush Chrysalis synthpop sound. Aforementioned remixes include contributions from Moby, Steve Wilson, Blank & Jones, and Midge Ure, while a newly mixed full concert recorded at Hammersmith Odeon in 1984 comes stapled in at the end. Review: Mansfield's B-Movie were among a clutch of bands in the early 80s whose members had abandoned their formative thrashy guitar punk influences, and embraced broader, arty, keyboard-laden electronic post-punk. They had a light and catchy, yet brooding Cure-esque hit titled 'Remembrance Day', which shot them up the ranks on the UK gig scene and landed them a record deal. Most of the material they recorded once they got signed was, however, confined to Universal's vaults until very recently because B-Movie had line-up issues that hindered their ability to release an album. Now out of the clutches of contractual obligations, the band have unearthed the album that never was and titled it - quite aptly - Hidden Treasures. Ultimately, they are one of the great 'lost' bands of the early 80s and upon tuning in you can hear that they had in abundance the individuality, style and excellence to have shot them up the charts and made them a household name, had this material been their debut album. Thankfully, they have righted the wrongs of history and they can hold their heads up high forever for having made such brilliant music in their first era.

Review: Southend's These New Puritans have a rare ability to create goosebump-inducing music. A big part of is is Jack Barnett's voice, which is truly up there with the likes of Thom Yorke and Hayden Thorpe's in terms of being able to tug at the heartstrings and create grandiose spellbinding atmospheres. Plus, the arrangements that accompany it are of elite level and taste. This new album is their fifth studio album since forming in 2006 and offers plenty in the way of diversity. 'A Season In Hell' is a wild mix of industrial, organ music, trip-hop and choir sounds. Elsewhere, 'Bells' is less intense and let's the atmosphere form gradually and luxuriously. If you want a record to properly blow your socks off, let it be this.

Review: From Tanworth-in-Arden to Wimpole Street and the Sound Techniques studio, Nick Drake's journey to his debut full-length is laid bare in this meticulous, four-disc archival set, authorised by the Drake Estate and mastered by original engineer John Wood. Originally released on Island Records in 1969, the album's making is told across more than 30 previously unheard outtakes, Cambridge demos and alternate takesitracing the evolution of songs like 'Day Is Done', 'Saturday Sun' and the devastating 'River Man' from fragile sketches to finished elegies. Disc one's "Beverley Martyn demo" reveals a more tentative, companionable Drake, while the Cambridge reel captures a private world of haunting, early ideas ('Made to Love Magic', 'My Love Left With The Rain'). The studio takes on disc three show a singer still searching, his signature phrasing emerging through repetition and rejection. A sixty-page book, pressed on textured stock and written by Neil Storey and Richard Morton-Jack, completes the reissue. A landmark document of a quiet revolutionary who shaped modern songwriting through understatement, nuance and myth.

Review: Geir Jenssen (Biosphere) marks his AD93 debut with The Way Of Time, wrapping elucted echo and looping synth drift around spoken fragments of Elizabeth Madox Roberts' great 1926 novel The Time Of Man. A Midwestern gothic literary staple, Roberts' novel is about the daughter of a Kentucky tenant farmer, and Jenssen's haunting use of Joan Lorring's voice from the 1951 radio play adaptation readapts his usual icy predilections for suitably huger desert horizons. Rather than treating the vocal as ornament, he folds it deep into the mix, letting it dissolve into the melodic architecture.

Blumberg, a British composer and musician, fuses large-scale brass orchestrations, intimate piano melodies and dynamic jazz elements. The film, which spans multiple decades and tells the story of Hungarian architect Laszlo Toth (Adrien Brody) rebuilding his life in post-war America, is mirrored in the music's broad emotional scope. Blumberg worked with a diverse group of avant-garde musicians from across Europe, capturing their performances on location to maintain a raw, organic sound. Formed in 1976 by lead singer Joseph Hill, with Albert Walker and Roy Dayes, the Jamaican group emerged under the name The African Disciples before becoming Culture and signing with Joe Gibbsione of Kingston's most revered producers. What followed was a run of revolutionary 7"s and 12"s, including the seismic 'Two Sevens Clash', whose apocalyptic prophecy shook the reggae landscape. These recordingsinow collected in full, dub sides and allichart the group's 1977 to 1981 run with Gibbs, a period widely regarded as their peak. Tracks like 'Zion Gate' and 'See Dem a Come' show their power not just as writers of militant roots reggae, but as spiritual messengers, blending dread prophecy with hypnotic riddims. Even in dub form, these versions retain urgency and weight, anchored by Hill's unshakeable vocal tone and Gibbs's rich, bass-forward production. Later work with Sonia Pottinger would push their sound further afield, but what's here is raw, righteous and definitive. Originally released in 1982 their second album was a bold pivot: less of the noir cabaret that had its roots in their Leeds Poly days, more MDMA-drenched disco detachment. But what felt fleeting at the time now reads like a fully formed vision. The first disc captures the original six-track run, including a furious remake of 'Memorabilia', the twisted funk of 'Sex Dwarf' and their glam-stomp take on 'What' i a track that somehow hit Number Three in the UK while sounding like it belonged in a haunted backroom. The second disc expands the picture with extended cuts like 'Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go' and 'Torch', all of which showcase how Soft Cell flirted with pop but refused to smooth their edges. It's a new reissue, but more importantly, it's a reminder of just how ahead of their time they were i turning sleaze into sophistication and dancefloor detritus into poetry. Digitally remastered and packed with rarities, this is as complete a portrait of Soft Cell's ecstatic peak as you'll find.

Incapacitants - Toshiji Mikawa and Fumio Kosakai- open with a wall of full-spectrum chaos, sharp and seismic, whence as the intensity peaks, Mary enters, slicing through with her signature burn of texture and dread, pushing the set into new extremes. Though the 2005 CD reissue stirred interest with rare demos and extensive sleevenotes, it remains an "unofficial" release due to copyright issues with EMI. 'Do You Know Who's Looking for You?' later found new life via a Finnish-language cover by rock band YUP.

Review: The twelfth studio release from Manchester duo Marconi Union reaffirms why they remain such a quietly vital force in ambient music. Formed in 2003, the pair's latest work arrives after a two-year process of reorientation i one that saw them scrap old habits, test new material live, and ultimately return to the atmospheric instinct that first defined them. The result is a seamless 55-minute composition split into nine movements: fluid, immersive, and full of emotional nuance. It's a brand new release that spans sequencer-driven passages, low-lit drone work and impressionistic electronics, all stitched together with an elegant sense of pacing. Review: The CD edition of a wider multi-format reissue, Greatest documents, well, the greatest greatest hits compilation to span the steadfast, enduring work of Brum new romantic hopefuls turned interstellar pop stars Duran Duran. Originally released in 1989, The Greatest is a choice career retrospective and update to the earlier 1989 compilation album Decade, where the new wave band's evolution over the elapsing of yet another decade solicited further tribute. Tracks like 'Notorious' flaunt their seamless move into funk-infused pop, while 'The Reflex' catches the polished, experimental edge of their mid-80s era. Review: After a year spent adrift, Rival Consoles - Ryan Lee West - returns with his ninth full-length, Landscape From Memory, and with it, a rekindled spark. Having stepped away from his self-built studio in Hackney amid the comforts of routine, West embroidered this record from scraps: demos recorded on the road, acoustic sketches caught through a laptop mic, grainy textures brass rubbed against lustrous synth tabula rasa. Leading light 'Catherine', a dedication to his partner, is bare and buoyant, following renewed processive energy. 'In a Trance', 'Known Shape' and 'Gaivotas' further flex West's fondness for propulsive rhythms and irregular sonics.
