Review: The Doobie Brothers make a triumphant return with a revitalised lineup, uniting founding members Patrick Simmons, Tom Johnston, John McFee and Michael McDonald for their latest release. With a legacy built on infectious harmonies, impeccable musicianship and a genre-blending approach, the band has long been a staple in American rock and pop. Their newest project, produced by John Shanks, reflects both their storied past and evolving present. The album touches on personal themes of growth, recovery and a deepening understanding of life's essential truths, each track showcasing the band's uncanny ability to weave Americana, rock and soul into an expansive yet cohesive sound, while collaborationsiincluding a stirring appearance from Mavis Staplesiadd emotional depth. Tracks like 'Angels & Mercy' and 'Learn To Let Go' embrace themes of growth and recovery, while the title track, featuring Staples, offers a sense of hope and unity. As ever, the Doobies navigate complex emotions with timeless ease, proving that their distinct blend of optimism and introspection still resonates deeply, even after decades of musical evolution.

Modern Classical
Review: The sixth instalment in Anthony Braxton’s Trillium cycle pushes the boundaries of the operatic form into new metaphysical and improvisational dimensions. Rooted in Chicago’s avant-garde tradition but unfolding via a live recording in Prague and a studio session in Darmstadt, the project spans four acts—‘Voyage To The New World’, ‘Robots Versus Humans’, ‘The Three Sisters’ and ‘Four Disasters’—each one housed in an abstract narrative world that operates on dream logic. Braxton, now 80, spent five years developing this work, his most ambitious opera to date. Alongside Swiss conductor Roland Dahinden and the PMP Ensemble I Orchestra—one of Europe’s most forward-thinking groups—he weaves twelve solo voices through dense and shifting compositional systems. The box set includes over six hours of material, from the operatic performances themselves to behind-the-scenes footage and a feature-length documentary. This feels like a culmination—an 8-CD monument to Braxton’s singular synthesis of AACM-rooted jazz, experimental classical and radical improvisation.

Rock
Review: Hailing from the UK, SWEET remains an enduring force in glam and hard rock, their legacy stretching back to the 70s. What stands out here is the raw energy and charisma that continue to drive them, even as they revisit rare material from their vast archive. This latest compilation, dug from the private vault of guitarist Andy Scott, is more than just a collection of forgotten tracks; it’s a peek behind the curtain of a band that, over the years, has masterfully blended catchy hooks with rebellious flair. As you listen to unreleased versions of ‘Fox On The Run’ and ‘Little Willy’, it’s easy to hear how the band’s knack for anthemic choruses and tight, riff-driven rock hasn’t dulled. Far from a mere nostalgia trip, these tracks show a band still in tune with the instincts that made them icons in the first place—raw, unpolished and impossible to ignore. Even after decades of global success, SWEET’s unmistakable blend of glam-infused rock and infectious hooks is as potent as ever, leaving you with no doubt: they remain at the top of their game.

Review: Released alongside the Netflix documentary I’m Tim, this retrospective compilation stretches across the highs of Avicii’s output with a newly weighted poignancy. From festival-defining anthems like ‘Levels’ and ‘Wake Me Up’ to more introspective cuts like ‘Lonely Together’ and ‘Heaven’, it captures the emotional range that defined the Swedish artist’s short but seismic career. The inclusion of previously unreleased material — including the wistful ‘Let’s Ride Away’ and the 2016 Ibiza version of ‘Forever Yours’ — deepens the sense of unfinished brilliance, revealing sketches that still shimmer with intent. What emerges across the 21 tracks is less a victory lap than a reminder of how much Avicii changed the shape of mainstream dance music: layering acoustic intimacy with peak-time euphoria, wrangling EDM excess into pop structures, and making vulnerability sound colossal. It's a generous, if bittersweet, document of an artist still echoing in the music that followed.

Review: This is Mark Stewart of Pop Group fame's Bowie Blackstar moment. An innovative and expressive masterpiece that sounds ahead of its time. Completed shortly before the Bristol-born legend's untimely passing in April 2023, this is a posthumous release on Daniel Miller's Mute label - a label that's had a strong long-term connection with the fearless visionary. The album was co-produced by another all-time great in British music - Killing Joke's Youth, who is responsible for a swathe of the most interesting new music out there at the moment. The first track to be released from it, 'Memory Of You', shows what an incredible singer Stewart was, with a righteous nod to the Walker Brothers and Sinatra in his timbre. It's a truly welcome surprise and hats off to those releasing this in Mark Stewart's memory.

Review: While not the band’s final album, there’s a solid argument to be made that 1995’s Worry Bomb was Carter USM’s last hurrah – a top-ten set that marked the beginning of the end for the distinctive South London duo. This expanded 30th anniversary edition pairs a remastered version of the original album –which boasts typically gritty, soaring and powerful classics such as ‘Young Offenders Mum’, the punky ‘Airplane Food/Airplane Fast Food’ medley, the riotous ‘Me & Mr Jones’ and the introspective ‘My Defeatist Attitude’ – with a disc of B-sides and rarities and, most excitingly, a previously unreleased live album of their performance at the 1994 Pheonix Festival. Throw in a DVD featuring videos, Top of the Pops appearances and freshly recorded interviews, and you have an essential item for Carter fans.

Rock
Review: Bruce Springsteen has been sitting on these recordings for years—whole records, not sketches—some finished, some forgotten. Now they finally surface, spanning 1983 to 2018, and offer a different kind of self-portrait: one less polished, more exploratory. The earliest material finds him navigating a path between the haunted quiet of ‘Nebraska’ and the radio gloss of ‘Born in the U.S.A.’. Later sessions toy with drum loops, synth beds and orchestral swells. One batch plays like the soundtrack to a film that never existed; another leans into pedal steel and modest country sketches. There are borderland narratives, noir-ish ballads, E Street-style anthems. That New Jersey grit—that plainspoken clarity he’s carried since the boardwalk days—runs through even the softest tracks. He says he made this music to please himself and close friends, and you hear that freedom in its variety: some songs feel raw and just-found, others fully formed. There’s no tidy arc, but that’s part of its charm. Across seven discs and 82 songs, what emerges isn’t a legacy project but something quieter: a window into how a working musician keeps working. You don’t come away with answers—only a better sense of how far Springsteen will follow a song just to see where it leads.

Music With Changing Parts (part 4)
Review: Composed in New York by the Baltimore-born minimalist Philip Glass, Music With Changing Parts marks a decisive shift in his development—from austere process music to the more vivid, colour-rich sound of his later compositions. Performed with free instrumentation, the piece allows musicians to switch between eight staves at specified cues, generating abrupt shifts in texture and timbre. Though its melodic material remains tightly looped and minimal, changes in orchestration continuously refresh the sonic landscape. Most striking is the psychoacoustic illusion Glass observed during rehearsals: when multiple players repeated the same short patterns, sustained tones seemed to emerge on their own. He eventually formalised this in the score, permitting long notes to enhance the effect. What results is a hallucinated resonance that pulses and flickers—an early indication of the harmonic depth he would later bring to works like Einstein on the Beach.

Review: Hailing from Norway, Hedvig Mollestad is renowned for her ability to bridge the worlds of jazz and heavy rock with a fierce, improvisational spirit. The trio, which has been at the heart of her sound since its inception, is back with their latest offering after a four-year hiatus, following the release of Ding Dong. This time, there's a palpable sense of urgency and creative freedom. Tracks like ‘Bees In The Bonnet’ and ‘Under The Velvet Sky’ highlight their complex interplay, weaving intricate structures with fiery, riff-heavy moments. The trio’s chemistry, cultivated over years of touring and writing together, has only deepened, with an infectious energy that resonates throughout the release. Mollestad’s sharp, commanding guitar work remains a focal point, as she effortlessly fuses influences from jazz legends to the weighty riffs of metal pioneers.
