Review: CHBB was a project by Beate Bartel and Chris Haas that developed from a collaboration first embarked upon in 1981, while working on the self-titled album Liaisons Dangereuses. After initially releasing their music only on four limited cassettes, this compilation from Soulsheriff flaunts their complete works, including all recordings from the original tapes paired with several new and original tracks by each artist. One can hardly tell the difference between original and new here; from the surreally throat-sung contraltos of 'NBKE' to the jankily strange doubletimes of 'Bali', from the the warbly hypnotisms of 'Shapeshifter' to the womping-kicks-over-German-language-incantations of 'Ima Iki-Mashoo', there's an industrial, experimental treat here for everyone.

Witches '85 (Bedmo Disco Spell Of Love) (6:34)
Review: Bedford-based trio Zenana never made much of an impact when they were first active in the 1980s but have become the toast of the world's media following the rediscovery of their excellent, Italo and Hi-NRG-influenced 1986 synth-pop single, 'Witches', by crate diggers a couple of years back. Here that fine track, originally produced in terraced house in Cornwall by the brother of bandmember Anita Tedder, gets the reissue treatment on Rush Hour's RSS series - thanks, in no small part, to a new (but authentically 80s sounding) extended remix from long-established Bristol DJ/production duo Bedmo Disco. Their flipside 'Spell of Love' version strips back and stretches out the track, taking cues from NYC proto-house, Martin Rushent dubs and mid-80s Shep Pettibone remixes. It's the 12" dance mix the song never had first time round.

Review: Front 242's decision to re-release No Comment in partnership with Alfa Matrix is a testament to their influential status in electronic music. Originally released in 1984, the album marked a significant moment for the band as they solidified their lineup and began to attract a devoted following. The remastered version by Daniel B. allows listeners to experience the album's innovative and unmatched sound in the best audio quality possible. No Comment was a early example of Front 242's high-tech, hard-edged electronic punk dance music, establishing them as leaders of the emerging electronic body music movement. Front 242's commitment to pushing the boundaries of sound and technology is evident throughout the album. Their cold, synthetic brand of electronic dance music became their signature sound, influencing electronic music for decades to come.

Review: Front 242's re-release of Politics Of Pressure with Alfa Matrix for their 40th anniversary is a treat for fans and a testament to their pioneering status in electronic music. Originally released in 1985, the album shows the band's innovative sound and solidified their position as leaders in the emerging electronic body music movement. The remastered version by Daniel B. brings out the best audio quality, highlighting the band's use of cutting-edge technology to stay ahead of the curve. Politics Of Pressure features the classic lineup of Daniel B., Patrick Codenys, Jean-Luc De Meyer, and Richard "23" Jonckheere, who were instrumental in shaping Front 242's iconic image and high-energy live performances. The album's cold, synthetic electronic dance music became the band's signature sound, influencing electronic music for years to come. This re-release is a fantastic opportunity to rediscover these classic tunes in their fully remastered glory. Feel the power of the greatest EBM band who ever recorded!

Review: Marie Davidson's latest single 'Y.A.A.M.' is a poignant critique of power dynamics in the music industry - favouring authenticity and passion in a world that thrives on branding and transactional relationships - out of which the Canadian artist finds fuel to fan the driving flames of existential industrial electro-techno. The track opens with a juddering, in-between-4x4-and-2-step electro beat, which lasts for over a minute before Davidson takes up the mic: "do you follow me?". What ensues is an imperfect list of music industry quibbles, which flow over the monstrously huge backing - "entrepreneurs, influencers, producers, managers / nothing for you and me" - in stark but gallows-comedic contrast to the plea to relocate our arses to the dancefloor. In Davidson's own words, the track was inspired by a haughty, lecturing email from a music industry insider: "I took the opportunity to write down how I felt about the words," she recalls, "and the overall tone of arrogance of what I had just been sent quickly, I found myself having a bit too much fun."

Review: On The Screen: an LP from the Belgian band Linear Movement originally slated for release in 1983. Linear Movement is mastermind Peter Bonne (A Split-Second, Twilight Ritual, Autumn) joined by Peter Koutstaal, and Lieve Van Steerteghem on vocals for several tracks. Some tracks appear on the exquisite Pulse Music cassette while the rest are previously unreleased. Linear Movement was featured on V/A The Lost Tapes compilation LP with their highly acclaimed The Game, described as an "unstoppable pop song". Linear Movement have been called "a more primitive, cold wave Visage", and have been compared to the Human League. Peter differentiated LM from his other projects TR and Aut by the distinct sound of the compositions: they were poppier.

Review: A veteran of the Berlin electronic music scene, Sascha Funke is no stranger to local expatriates Multi Culti, debuting for them back in 2016 with the terrific In Relationen EP. For his latest outing, he paris up with multi-instrumentalist Niklas Wandt, one half of Gehoelzpflege, for some trippy and low slung sonic shenanigans on the Kreidekreis EP. From the slo-mo tribal trance of opening cut 'Kometenschweif' which will propel you into the cosmos in vertically locomotive fashion, followed by the funky sundown nu-disco of the title track which receives a wicked rework by Alexander Arpeggio up next - taking the track into psyched-out lounge territory. Also on the remix is Neapolitan Whodammanny, channelling '80s Neue Deutsche Welle sounds, German vocals to boot, on a rendition of 'Kometenschweif'.

Review: Polytechnic Youth has been in hibernation for years and now is back with a run of killer releases. This limited 7" comes with fine artwork inspired by 70s era BBC design and is the latest offering from Masonic Kitchen, the solo project of Chris Walker. The music is sci-fi inspired experimental electronica with minimal synth boxes, sequences and drum machines all featuring to lend it a nice frayed hardware aesthetic. Human League and Cabaret Voltaire fans will surely find lots to love.

Review: Slovenia multimedia, electronic and rock group Borghesia formed back in 1982 from members of an underground theatre group that was known as FV-112/15. They also ran their own alternative club and had an illicit, illegal aesthetic based around anything taboo, banned or prohibited in the country at the time, much like the likes of Front 242 and Nitizer Ebb. Rugged City was an album first released in 1988 and only in Yugoslavia. It collects the best tunes from previous albums Escorts And Models and No Hope No Fear and is a perfect overview of their powerful mutant sound.

Review: Empire of the Sun's Ice on the Dune is a dazzling follow-up that solidifies the duo's place in the electro-pop pantheon. With a title that perfectly encapsulates the album's blend of glacial synths and summery pop, this record is a shimmering spectacle from start to finish. Frontman Luke Steele and bandmate Nick Littlemore have refined their sound, delivering leaner, more club-ready tracks while retaining the infectious energy that defined their debut. Songs like 'DNA' and 'Alive' showcase the duo's ability to craft irresistible hooks and dynamic arrangements, with 'Alive' standing out as a life-affirming electro-fuzz anthem. The juxtaposition of breezy acoustic strumming and throbbing synths on 'DNA' echoes the best moments of their previous hits. 'Concert Pitch' is another highlight, offering punchy disco pulses and a wistfully breathy chorus. Slower tracks like 'I'll Be Around' provide a warm, sensual counterpoint, demonstrating Steele's delicate vocal prowess. The album closes with the epic 'Keep a Watch,' blending poised piano balladry with grandiose flourishes, perfectly embodying the duo's larger-than-life personas. With Ice on the Dune, Empire of the Sun delivers a vibrant and cohesive album, cementing their status as one of the most exciting electro-pop acts of all time.

Review: Contrary to its ultra-crisp sound - one that suggests it could've been made today - Cetu Javu's Southern Lands was first released on Basic Mix in 1990. Catering to the largely cassette-bound underground of Barcelona at the time, Basic Mix acted as a little-known sublabel through which acts like Javu could express their best and rawest sides. Comprising Javier Revilla and Chris Demere, Cetu Javu had moved to Barcelona from Hanover, Germany - inspired by the works of Kraftwerk, Soft Cell, and Jean-Michel Jarre - and thus produced Southern Lands following a tour shared with fellow acts Wolfsheim and Blind Passengers. The album is shockingly well-made, bespeaking the power of minimal production and conservative vocal processing to achieve a crystal-clear, no less upfront, 'naked' industrial sound.

Review: Mathieu Charbonneau and Pietro Amato are no strangers. The pair have worked together in various guises and forms for many years, first meeting in the instrumental group Torngat, an then turning their attention to the Ferriswheel project and indie band The Luyas. Amato is still a member of the latter, and some will also know his name from Bell Orchestre and, on the odd occasion, some outfit called Arcade Fire.

Cast all those references aside, though, because Synth Works Vol. 2, as the title suggests, opts to map out electronic courses through modular constellations, the sound of glittering stars passing by a pristine space station, the noise of humans looking out into the great black expanse and wondering what their place is, and where everyone else has gone. A work of minimal beauty.

Review: Despite the title sounding like an archive collection, 1994 is actually the debut album from OKRAA. It has an emphasis on live performance and makes for a gorgeously immersive and even evolving listen from the aways excellent A Strangely Isolated Place label. All four pieces are over with minutes but they are worthy of their playing time for the way so much unfolds in such engaging fashion. Synths are cold and innocent on 'Ola De Luz' while 'Heartless' is more textural, dark, heavy in its mood. The title track is another heavy and introspective one while 'Plasma' has a more optimistic feel that lifts the spirts.

Review: The seminal musicians who have graced King Biscuit Time on US radio are too many to count, but who's complaining when so much gold material can be dusted down and given a fresh pressing. They surely don't come more momentous than this - German electronic pioneers Kraftwerk captured in 1975 as they were in the midst of progressing from their warm, organic kosmische roots towards the game-changing synthesis they're eternally treasured for. 'Autobahn' is of course the big hit here, stretching out over the A side as it should, but don't overlook the wonderful 'Kometenmelodie' and two-part 'Morgenspaziergang', all demonstrating Schneider, Hutter et al as the extraordinary visionaries they were.

Review: Recorded early 1984, by this point Carlos Peron was already something of a household name within the electronic music world thanks to efforts with seminal outfit Yello. If you're familiar, you'll know the group make a lot of energetic, danceable yet experimental stuff, which at times borders on club but is really synth music in the truest sense. Nothing Is True Everything Is Permitted takes us to a very different place indeed. Frequently described as a dark soundtrack without a film, this record has gone down in cult electronica history for its refusal to be anything specific, other than something resolutely itself. The tunes here are dramatic, sometimes even intimidating and certainly frequently unnerving. At other moments, they are at the vanguard of field and found sound recordings, or lost in the ether haze of lush ambient.

Review: There's something transportive about Odd Balade. The real question is, where does it take us to? Potentially very different places from the next listener, with much of what's here opaque enough to produce varying interpretations from a variety of ears. Even if we were all thinking and experience it in the same way, the sheer breadth of the tracks themselves would still invoke changeable responses. 1980s goth-wave, leftfield pop, haunting ethereality, medieval-hued folk tones, and that's really just off the top of our heads. Tiphaine Belin, AKA Trypheme, is certainly capable of conjuring a multitude of feelings, but Odd Balade makes more big statements than that - it reaffirms the artist as an esteemed producer and songwriter, not just an incredible vocalist. A record deserving of serious attention, to say the least.

Review: Belarusian post-punk and synth-pop group Molchat Doma have always reflected a brutalist aesthetic in their music which has been marked by cold, grey, and industrial tones. Following their 2020 breakthrough, the trio faced significant changes from leaving Minsk to headlining global shows. Settling in Los Angeles, they crafted their fourth album, Belaya Polosa, which symbolises transformation during tough times and celebrates the digital pulse of the 90s. The album combines sombre dance floor anthems with vibrant reinventions and tracks like 'Ty Zhe Ne Znaesh' Kto Ya,' 'Son,' and 'Belaya Polosa' showcase how they have moved their sound along to blend post-punk, synth textures, and melodic sophistication while maintaining their distinctive minimalist style.

Review: Originally a digital-only project back in 2022, Whispers Of An Ancient World now makes the magical leap to vinyl as Mystic & Quantum press it up in hugely limited quantities for those lucky enough to cop it quickly. This is a green version with artwork by Kilian Eng. Musically it is a delightful escape. Ambient soundworlds and suggestive ancient rituals sit next to ambles through humid jungles, soothing acoustic string lullabies and more turbulent dub sounds that speak of a dystopian future looming on the horizon with artists like Diagonal, Mason Bee, State Azure and more all adding to its charms.

Review: It's been a busy time for Hawksmoor, with the critically acclaimed Telepathic Heights album arriving last year and a re-release of the stunning Saturnalia landing on Library of the Occult earlier in 2024. Now we have a brand new studio collection waiting to be explored, and it's every bit the record fans will have been hoping for given the track record here. Owing plenty to seminal German electronic acts such as Cluster, Neu!, Michael Rother, Can, and Hans-Joachim Roedelius, there's also plenty here rooted in more melodic synth schools of music alongside the ambient work of Brian Eno and more. The result is something that sounds at once modern and old, timeless yet out of time. A work of extraordinary talent and just a little bit of genius, we'd say it has been worth the wait but the remarkable thing here is just how prolific Hawksmoor seem to be.

Review: Italoconnection deliver the second volume in their Midnight Confessions Italo trance albums series. The partnership of Fred Ventura and Paolo Gozzetti first saw the first edition of Midnight Confessions in 2021; three years later, a whole new fresh set of modern yet true-blue Italo sonics are unleashed. As Ventura's unmistakable lead vocals regale tails of optimistic liaisons and lost love, Gozzetti's monumental production style brings a torrential sheen to an otherwise well-known Italian dance style. On the likes of 'Cold War Lovers' and 'Systematic', we hear a further set of ruminations on current events, the former track marking a synthwave sojourn as Ventura laments the energetic anomie, the inhibitions of today: "we should be dancing, we should be dancing all night..." Released on a limited edition 2xLP via Bordello A Parigi.

Review: QUAL is the solo project of William Maybelline from Lebanon Hanover, and one known for its "meaner, darker, and nastier" persona. The name qual means pain in German and since the 2015 debut Sable, the moniker has delved into dark, minimal synth, old-school EBM, and industrial electronics using analogue equipment. Following the 2021 LP Tenebris in Lux and the 2022 remix album Re-Animate, he now returns with Techsick featuring three new tracks and a Sarin remix. Highlights include the metal-influenced 'Dancing in Hell,' the familiar minimalist 'Techsick,' and the dual-sided 'Funeral Fashion,' blending classic EBM with a techno remix. The first 12" vinyl edition is limited to 500 copies so move fast.

Review: Hailing from Yorkshire, Geoff Bastow made music that took people pretty far away from the White Rose county, out to the cosmic discos of Italy and then onwards towards the stratosphere itself. Half a galaxy away from a part of England known for keeping two feet firmly rooted to the ground, calling spades spades and taking no nonsense from nobody. Often producing under the moniker K.I.D. during the 1980s, and making most of his sounds after relocating to Munich, Germany, Bastow's attention to detail, sense of space and spatiality, gauge of groove and understanding of what makes a dancefloor move cannot be understated. Save your words, though, and skip straight to this EP to explain all that to people - six takes on a stone cold classic.

Review: Rusty Egan Presents Blitzed! offers a vivid sonic journey back to London's Blitz Club circa 1980, capturing the essence of the New Romantic movement with meticulous detail. As the resident DJ at the epicenter of this cultural phenomenon, Rusty Egan curated a soundtrack that defined an era and shaped the future of British pop music. This compilation meticulously captures the eclectic mix of influences that fueled the Blitz Club's electric atmosphere. From Bowie and Roxy Music to Kraftwerk and European electronic pioneers, Egan's sets seamlessly blended diverse musical styles, creating a sonic tapestry that transcended genres. The tracks on Blitzed! reflect the club's diverse clientele, from fashion designers to art school kids, post boys to pop stars in the making. The compilation's contemporary photography by Sheila Rock, Peter Ashworth, and Terry Smith, along with insightful sleeve notes by Alexis Petridis and Rusty Egan himself, provide a comprehensive look into the era and its cultural impact. Blitzed! not only celebrates the music of the time but also serves as a historical document of a revolutionary moment in British pop culture. It's a must-have for anyone interested in the New Romantic movement and the influential role of clubs like The Blitz in shaping music history.
