  6. You Need A Friend (Cauto refrit) (4:45)
Review: Miguel Gil Tertre dusts off his Strand hat for some glitched-out IDM beat freakery. The title track sets the statement for the whole EP: a chaotic 8-bit brew of frenetic drums and over-layered data textures, it's instant insanity. Dig deeper for an array of weirded out compositions; the 22nd century jazz creativity of "Alvaro" and the mischievous mangled juke-meets-rave styles of "You Need A Friend" and the discordant Apparat-style stretches and bends of "Ana & I". Unique.

Review: Bristol badness: Blacklink deliver another limited vinyl-only beat collection and every track's an under-the-counter creeper. Strict Fact takes Britney's finest and sullies it up with grimy stickiness, Tarquin does that jazz thing that sits somewhere between MJ Cole and Derrick Carter, Marcx gives Ciara the ride of her life while Grizzle closes the show on a pitched up Trey Songz wavey flex. Limited and not likely to see digital release.

  1. Your Heart (Sven Weisemann To Be Pure In Heart mix) (13:29)
  2. Changes (Legowelt remix) (6:10)
  3. Body Close (DBridge remix) (3:31)
Review: Over the golden years of dubstep and right to the present day, UK producer Synkro has managed to always keep himself fresh and firmly at the cutting-edge of the genres that he dabbles in. His 2015 LP Changes was a singular take on drum and bass and ambient, making it a successful album for Apollo and gaining the respect of many music fiends.. It gets better, though, with this new remix EP. Three tunes from the LP are remixed by three pioneers of their own genres: "Your Heart" is moulded into a delicate deep house bundle by Mojuba boss Sven Weisemann; Legowelt transforms "Changes" - an airy slice of experimentation - into what is perhaps the finest house jam of the summer. Exit bossman and drum and bass legend dBridge catapults "Body Close" into a new and unknown area of jungle that takes inspiration from r&b...in the darkest and most cerebral way possible.

  4. Etch - "Predator" (7:16)
Review: Green Village is a label operating out of Jersey City that deals in all manner of sounds from rugged house to scuffed up techno, but with a distinct bent towards broken rhythms and plenty of bass. This various artists 12" plies a diverse trade, with all tracks bound together by their ruffness. Theft & TOYC bring some loud and lurid bass synths to their snaking slice of oddball club music "Atlantic", while BD1982 places focus on dense layers of choppy drums and needlepoint acid arpeggios. Eighth Ruin delivers a truly head turning beat with the appropriately named "Whip", and then Etch pays tribute to a classic movie with the excellent breakbeat science of "Predator".

Review: Destination Dominowe: Gqom delve deep into the craft of the 23-strong collective TLC Fam with their first full-flavoured EP. Featuring their signature vocal rhythms, hard-rolling taxi kick signature and soul-stirring Zulu arrangements, even by Gqom's broad smorgasbord standards, this one pushes new buttons. The chanting hypnosis and sudden synth salvo of "Tribute To Nomfundo", the snare-rolling, heavily percussive militant stampede "Ndanda Yethu" and the slo-mo, unhurried trippiness and smoking subs of "Bridge Lase London" are just three of the highlights you'll find here.

Metal (12")
Cat: CR 001. Rel: 12 Jun 17
  1. Metal (5:03)
  2. Bump
  3. Rebar
Review: He's back! Toasty, one of foundation dubstep's original contributors, returns to the bass game via the ever-evolving, ever-on-point Circadian Rhythms crew's fledgling label. "Metal" takes us right back to the coal face; steel foundry beats clanging spaciously while wafting flutes subvert the industriality of it all with a sense of murked tropicana. "Rebar" is a flex back to the early 2000s when UKG, breakbeat, grime and dubstep were all bouncing off each other where hammering breaks and a droning bass that oozes over the edges promise to cause serious damage. Finally "Bump" provides uplift and happy endings as dreamy synths soar and skippy beats swagger and stagger. Welcome back Toasty.

  2. Man Like Me (3:03)
Review: James Blake temporarily downs tools as a melancholic sub-pop crooner to pick up close to where he left off with releases on Hemlock and Hessle Audio back in the day. For his own 1800 Dinosaur label he invites Javan St. Prix, aka grime MC Trim, to spit rhymes like "I surf waves most men drown in" over Blake-made digital vibraphone tones and syncopated, computer game basslines. On the flip, Trim, who's appeared on Keysound, Butterz and R&S in the past, dons the gloves for a second round called "Man Like Me", this time produced by Airhead who strips the melodies back for shuddering beats and strange, jingling percussion. Fresh.

  5. Mass Production (7:27)
Review: Nervous Horizon co-boss TSVI takes the reins for the label's second outing and it's every bit as stark, dark and futuristic as Wallwork & RZR's debut. Sitting somewhere between Grime, dubstep and Detroit techno, each of the four originals punches with a titanium robotic first: "Set You Free" is a scratchy, rough-ended glitch stepper, "Headshot" slaps with sheet metal bass/kick shots on an industrial strength level, "Black Dog" takes the rave deep inside the molten metal wells of a steel foundry while "Mass Production" reminds us of the roots with a squat party style slice of insistent techno. For added pleasure Lokane has provided a slightly lighter (but still wholly paranoid) twist on "Headshot". Ugly.

Review: "Be odd, be future, be not too serious" is the official tagline of ANUS Recordings and with a name such as theirs it's clear the fledgling Rotterdam operation don't take themselves that serious! Amusingly named they may be, but ANUS Recordings clearly know what constitutes a good release, turning to the ever excellent Tuff Sherm for this Solvent Dreams 10". There was a time when Tuff Sherm was considered the less prolific alias of Dro Carey aka Australian producer Eugene Hector but under the TS banner he's been in imperious form this year, issuing beat tapes as well as appearing on TTT, Merok and Clandestine Traxx. Solvent Dreams continues his run of form, laying down four tracks of grizzled techno abstractions filled with desiccated sampledelica with "Navigator & Hostage" and B Side hugger "Guirow" standing out.

Review: White shadow designs from the man previously known as Teeth: "Gang Drones" sits somewhere between Modeselektor and Fracture with its twisted church tones and subverted rap vocal. "Animal (A), Forcible, Corporeal, Object" isn't just a catchy title... With its broken 909s and Drexciyan aesthetic, it's an uncompromised tech construction with slight shades of light shining through the pitched drum melodies and sudden drops into breathy beatlessness. Finally we hit the subverted UKG tones and wave textures of "Where You Are", a moment for Twwth to remind us of his softer, soulful side.

Pillow Person Remixes (140 gram vinyl 12")

  1. On Your Way (Bogdan Raczynski remix)
  2. In My Game (Lechuga Zafiro remix)
  3. In My Game (IYDES remix)
  4. Go Ahead (Oliver Coates Sirius rework)
Review: Acid Waxa drew plenty of positive heat for carrying Roy Of The Ravers amongst many other respected braindancers, but now Hot Chip drummer Sarah Jones is getting the remix treatment on the label for her Pillow Person project, with some wild results. It's great to see Bogdan Raczynski back in action and bringing some gently wonked, emotional acid meanderings to "On Your Way", while Lechuga Zafiro makes an art out of aping footwork, and more specifically "Footcrab" while making it sound like someone just stubbed their toe and got stuck in a loop. IYDES however turns "In My Game" into a deconstructed but utterly bloated pop beast, and then Oliver Coates whips "Go Ahead" into a woozy, highly strung daze with billowing synths underneath Jones' vocal.

Review: Bristolian techno represents! Tape Echo is a quarterly newspaper, blog and radio show focused on underground experimental electronic music and their new in-house label Mechanical Reproductions is now onto its second second release: the debut for local cat Via Maris. On the first side, "Credentials" is a dusty broken stomper with soaring synth riffs that almost sound like guitars. On the flip, take a trip to the dark side with the seething low end theory of "Glimpse" which will appeal to fans of grey area experiments on Hidden Hawaii or Samurai Horo. With strong support already by tastemakers such as Avalon Emerson, the label's future looks bright!

This time, Warp Records and all round UK electronica legend Luke Vibert gives us the delightful oddball groove that is "Africable", Italian DJ Clap! Clap! Gives us the African polyrhythms via Detroit high-tech soul on "Kulira" while Los Angeles duo With You give us the sublime "No Resistance". Each 1500 albums sold will feed a school of 500 forever! 2. Lincolnshire Shuffle
Review: The freshly minted Shadowtrak label launches in style with some heavyweight 130BPM vibes from the exciting UK Bass pair up of Uprise Audio's Wayfarer and rising Londoner Kanjira. Lead track "Antwerp" is a deep-seated sub heavy roller that takes its cue from vintage jungle and the neck snapping riddims of West London's Broken Beat scene - proper early Seiji vibes on those drums. On the flip, "Lincolnshire Shuffle" takes a slinky breakbeat arrangement and gives it a rusty tribal edge that's complemented by delay laden bass lines that echo out mournfully with ominous presence.

Cat: DEGREY 001 . Rel: 03 Apr 17
  1. We Can't Have Nice Things (5:30)
  2. Warsaw (5:58)
  3. Exit (6:07)
Review: Webstarr first came to light back in 2014 with a deadly single on Beneath's ever-essential Mistry label, so you know that his moves in the bass music world come highly recommended. Finally coming back on the radar to kick off the De Grey label, his tough, limber productions sound stronger than ever, drawing on industrial and dub influences but framing them in a thoroughly modern context. "We Can't Have Nice Things" uses a plaintive lead that wouldn't sound out of place on a Hodge production, with roughneck drums to match, while "Warsaw" takes a swerve towards brooding techno-flavoured structures. "Exit" is arguably the strongest track here with its tightly wound, urgent rhythmic pulse sounding fit for a Livity Sound release.

  5. Axh - "Nano"
  6. Perverse - "Jacobin"
Review: Tempa continue to chisel away at the bass coal face in their own unique and ultimately deep way. For "Allstars 7" they've struck some serious gold... Blisteringly hot Wen serves up a blisteringly cold roller, all bubbly drums and iced-out synths, Manchester man Alex Coulton taps into the deep tribal dub psyche with his hand drum-heavy "Equilibrium", Innasound get deep on a meditative flex, Batu gets jiggy on a steppy, jaunty trip, Axh unleashes a post-dungeon stepper with a swift and uncompromising rhythm pattern and Perverse bring us to a stark, spaced out climax with the trippy "Jacobin". Four awesome examples of future-focussed bass music, Tempa have delivered a very special document right here.

Review: YES! We'd been waiting on this collaboration from UK start vocalist Wiley and shadowy electronic pioneer Zomby for a long time now, and it's about time it's landed on our shelves. "Step 2001" is a straight-up grime piece, a clicking, twisted groove made up of darting hi-hats and pacman sounds; you know when they say "they don't make them like they used to!"? Well, this doesn't apply here, as it's a serious head-dive back into the early noughties scene. There's also an instrumental version for maximum damage.

Review: Bruk bastions, the CoOp collective were one of the brightest, most exciting musical movements in the early to mid 2000s with their barbed, broken soul take on bass music emanating from Plastic People playing a heavy role in the forms of contemporary house music, dubstep and all things in between. Freshly reformed since a Boiler Room comeback in 2015 and loaded with new affiliates, the ensemble, First Word proudly present their first collective EP. Ranging from the jittering soundclash bashment of "Spartan Riddim" to the sensual Bias-like harp heaven of "Can't Hold It" via the technoid stutters of "2nd Intention", this marks the start of a very exciting new chapter for the CoOp crew.

Review: The Yaroze Dream Suite project was first initiated in the spring of 2015, when grime experimentalists Mr Mitch and Yamaneko got together in Local Action's London studio for the first time. It was clearly time well spent, because this eponymous debut EP is packed with ear-pleasing highlights. As you might expect, there are nods to grime's eight-bit roots throughout, alongside sparse but solid, hip-hop influenced beats and synth sounds more in keeping with IDM. The undoubted standout as to be "In The Moonlight", where Hannah Mack's sweet, soulful, R&B-informed vocals ride minimalist beats, bleeping electronic melodies, and impeccably programmed synthesizer sax solos.

Review: Izhak Del Muham and Tahlhoff Garten make up the Zack Christ duo, and together these dudes have produced a string of deranged bass music for Infinite Machine. This week, however, they launch the newly found Husoptagelser imprint with a devious little 7" that goes further away form the dance floor, and deeper into your mind. "Foxiest Funkdrive" soounds exactly like its name, a stumbling, quirky pile of kick drums splattered all over a minimal harmonic rhythm, and electronic manipulation - class. The flip sees "Centigrade Duckfucker" twist the groove further still, coming out with a glitchy pile of claps and drums, driven forwards by icy shreds of sonics. A definite tip, if we've ever seen one!

Review: Woof! Hyperdub bring together two of the most recognisable and enigmatic artists of recent times on this 10", as Zomby and Burial square down ahead of the former's new album for the label. Zomby's Ultra LP is undoubtedly one of this year's most anticipated albums and "Sweetz" suggests it may be a very moody affair indeed. Whilst rooted in UK dance, Zomby and Burial do look elsewhere for inspiration too. Just under seven minutes long, "Sweetz" veers through various sub-heavy soundscapes with intermittent rhythmic patters and a distinctive looped vocal sample whose pitch changes with dramatic effect.

Review: Stepping up with his second album for 50 Weapons, Addison Groove is once again mining the rhythmic excitement of juke and footwork and working it into his blue-hued melodic headspace. Standout vocal cut '"Just You" is a prime example of the upbeat flavour across the album, while "11th" matches the plush harmonies with moodier switch-ups, and "The Spirit Level" drops the tempo into a house bump that lends itself to the illustrious synth sweeps. Typically though the beats are in that twitchy middle ground between dubstep and footwork, leaving plenty of space for razor-sharp constructions and dazzling edits as best demonstrated on the dynamic acid roll of "Space Apples". Chaos abounds on the B Side where Developer's frantic side is shown via "Promiscuous" whilst the tightly wound "Pulstar" is quite hypnotic.

Review: It has been almost two years since the Fatima Al Qadiri's debut LP dropped on Hyperdub, and we're as excited now for her follow-up as when we'd heard the first one. This is because Qadiri provides us with everything to satisfy our need states; through an awry and granular sound, the artist is able to transmit a whole spectrum of moods and feelings. This makes Brute an album for anyone, and it can be enjoyed both by the party-goers and the moody corner-dwellers. The intro is a detached sort of skit that distances itself form any sort of shape, but so we're dropped in a post-futuristic world of pseudo grime, broken, detuned techno and tropical electronica. To be honest, there would be no other place for it than the mighty Hyperdub. Big release.
