Cat: XLT 774. Rel: 12 Aug 16
  1. Tuff Whisper (4:31)
  2. SnoPack (3:54)
  3. Don't Chirp (4:01)
  4. Jetski Moment (3:12)
Review: Following in the same vein as recent XL signing Sam Gelliatry, Gila steps up to XL with four barbed slabs of fractured future soul. "Tuff Whispers" is an ethereal, church rumbling 25th century ballad graced with chilling ghosted vocals. "SnoPack" and "Don't Chirp" take us deeper into the crypts with the same minimal elements but much darker, galvanised beats. "Jetski Moment" glides us off into the sunset on a much deeper synth-struck note that's powered by subtle but strong sub engines. Stirring.

  5. Graverobber (TMSV remix) (4:54)
  6. In Tha Trap (5:38)
Review: Etch & Ilk's grid-hating stable heads west to Philly for some spiritual guidance Gohda-style. Wavey, trippy and breezily cosmic, each original sucks us deep into its textures; the ebb and flow background arpeggio and rolling processed breaks and subdued melancholy on "Cybercity", the far-out 22nd century hip-hop beats of "Corrupted Angels", the weirdo squelch-ghetto creeper "Graverobber" and the crisp-beat Atlanta-bound highlight "In Tha Trap". Remix-wise TMSV takes "Graverobber" deep inside the church crypts for amplified harmonics while Bulu adds more of a left-sided club bang to "Corrupted Angels". Bang for your bucks; bun this at your peril.

  4. Half Under (4:46)
Review: Rising London DJ Henry Greenleaf comes through with his debut 12". Covering the same range of restrained, sub-laden immersive sounds you'd hear in his sets, across the EP we're running the late night capitol city gamut; "Fold Together" breathes life into the night with its sweeping chimes and hip-snaking percussive rolls while "Rolling Untitled" takes us deep into the techno womb, all minimal, warm and life affirming. Flip for some broken goodbyes as "The Way" wheezes with old pads but struts with new kicks and "Half Under" bids us adieu with a woozy Co-op style Plastic People kiss.

  1. Girl U So Strong
  2. Take Me Away
Review: It's been a little while since Kyle Hall dropped his album The Boat Party, but now the Detroit powerhouse is back on Hyperdub to indulge the freakier end of his studio output inline with his previous Kaychunk 12" for Kode 9's outpost. "Girl U So Strong" is a stirring beast of a track, starting in scattered fragments of bass patterns, vocal snippets and woodblock hits, gradually forming into a starlit stepper of the highest calibre. "Take Me Away" comes on like a Detroit take on the Purple phenomenon, all sticky synth lines and Mega Drive melodies but roughed up with ample grittiness.

  4. World In Action (Beneath remix) (3:38)
  5. After Dark (Sky H1 remix) (3:53)
Review: Helm's release from last year, World In Action, was one of our top picks from Will Bankhead's TTT store, and still deserves to be picked if you missed it the first time round. As such, it's no surprise that Helm himself has wanted to relaunch the EP, as a remix affair, on his own excellent Alter imprint. Truth be told, there is so much more to be said in these tunes, thanks to their loose and ambiguous properties, and it's safe to say that he's picked exactly the right group of artists to help him elevate them to the next level. Parris, Low Jack, Laurel Halo, Beneath, and Sky H1 land on Helm's originals with grievous intentions, each offering a visible shade of their own styles and takes on the enlarged techno domain - a detuned, demassed, and utterly destroyed collection of sounds. Big.

Stand Up (Pangaea mix) (1-sided 12") (1 per customer)
Cat: SALSBMG 08. Rel: 05 Dec 17
  1. Stand Up (Pangaea mix) (5:48)
Review: If you've been out and about this summer, there's a fair chance that you'll have danced hard to Pangaea's fine remix of Loleatta Holloway's "Stand Up", a gospel-influenced screamer that was repeatedly sampled by house producers in the mid 1990s. Pangaea's version first appeared on his killer, double A-side "2 Remixes" white label back in August, and here gets an official Salsoul Records release. It's amongst the producer's most potent revisions to date, with Holloway's brilliant vocal rising above a tough-as-teak fusion of speaker-troubling sub-bass, clap-happy, two-step drum machine beats and layered tribal percussion. Heavy and carnival-friendly, it's quickly turning into one of the dance anthems of 2017.

Dolce (12")
Cat: LIVITY 027. Rel: 03 Oct 17
  1. Dolce (5:37)
  2. Bun So Nude (4:38)
Review: The funny thing about Bristol's Livity Sound is that it manages to take on a new life with each and every release that emanates from its star-studded catalogue. Recently, we had Mosca and Hodge dropping some badness, while Peverelist and Kowton have been holding it down for donkey's years thanks to constant fluxes of new, game-changing bass music. This time it's newcomer I III who delivers the goods, coming through with the wonky steps of "Dolce" at first, a bouncy bit of side-step techno with that inimitably loose UK flow at its epicentre. On the flip, "Bun So Nude" ups the tempo and unleashes a formidable blockade of bleeps that'll have you hypnotised in no time - not to mention that sweet cascade of tribal rhythms too!

  1. Second Sight (6:45)
  2. Ritual (5:51)
Review: First making his name as a producer on local Manc operation Fat City, Hoya Hoya resident Illum Sphere has quite the cultured discography with high profile labels like Tectonic, Monkeytown, 3024 and Ninja Tune in his locker. It was with the latter that Illum Sphere released his debut album Ghosts Of Then and Now in 2014, and the music has slowed down since then, with just a RSD released Spectre Vexd doublepack arriving later that year. The wait is over however, as Illum Sphere confidently strides forward with this club-ready Second Sight 12" for Ninja Tune with both the title track and B-side "Ritual" apparently "reflective of a shift to a more machine-sounding approach" from the producer and bodes well for future Illum Sphere music. This is a less formulaic, and more highly resonant Illum Sphere and comes highly recommended.

  3. High Rise (3:13)
  4. Make Ends Meet (7:01)
  5. Make Ends Meet (London Something version) (3:11)
Review: If you hadn't heard of Imaginary Forces before his release on Bedouin back in October, you'll be pleased to hear that he has been active since the late 2000's, and has also put out a tonne of quality music through his Sleep Codes label. He's up on Rabit's Halcyon Veil to kick start the label's 2016, and he's come through with five jaw-dropping slices of industrial grit-funk. From "And What?" to "Make Ends Meet", the dude drops a barrel-load of sic-fi rhythms, all charged with a distinctive noise edge to blow your speakers out. Think Prurient meets Aaron Dilloway, or Joe from Hessle Audio having a not-so-polite conversation with Vereker. It's hot, heavy, and violent.

Review: Given his recent form, it was probably only a matter of time before fast-rising Glaswegian Inkke made an appearance on LuckyMe. Variously informed by grime, heavy Memphis rap, Rustie and Hudson Mohawke, Inkke's productions slip effortlessly into the LuckyMe catalogue. There's much to admire amongst the six tracks that make up Secret Palace, including a pair of robust club instrumentals - "Chores" and "Simmer" - which have long been staples in the sets of Skepta and D Double E. Our pick, though, has to be heavyweight grime roller "Tales From The Quick", which peppers a weighty sub-bass line and machine-gun percussion with woozy synthesizer lines.

Review: Twwth & Desto welcome brand new act Inner to the fold by way of this crystalline quartet of 23rd century trap constructions. Swaggering on the cosmic side, there's a touch of the moody Hudsons to the opening track "Pain" before the beats step up into more of grime energy and textures melt into a wavy sensation on "Crystal Ember". Dig deeper for the fractured, clipped and sense-blurring "Closa" before a final 135 hurrah on the RL Grime meets Nick Warren spatial star-gazer. Sweet dreams.

  1. Ishan Sound & Hodge - "C5" (4:37)
  2. Ishan Sound & Muttley - "Still Smoking" (4:24)
Review: Having recently notched up 100 releases, Tectonic begins a new era by offering up a suitably weighty collaborative release from Peng Sound regular Ishan Sound. On side A, the Young Echo member joins forces with Hodge - owner of the nicest hair in techno - for the deep and dreamy dubstep shuffle of "C5", where fluid riffs dance above a blazed but powerful beat. Muttley lends a hand on flipside cut "Still Smoking", an altogether livelier and more aggressive - if still suitably deep and hazy - 140 BPM workout that comes complete with stabbing, grime style riffs and some serious subsonic bass.

Review: Previously spotted on Boomarm Nation, Turkish bass experimentalists make their debut on Innamind's Blacklist imprint with four of the nuttiest, most far-out tracks you'll hear this season. Sitting somewhere between Modeselektor and Squarepusher but with dubbier roots, highlights include the tripped out harmonic headiness of "Heavy Machyn Gun" and "Phix", the slo-mo white knuckle ride with fellow Turk Gantz. Off the planetary hook.

  2. Iskeletor - "Afromax" (Gantz Seytan remix) (3:53)
  3. Grup Ses - "Mimar" (Iskeletor remix) (1:49)
Review: It's been a while since we last heard from Kerem Sevincli AKA Iskeletor, an Istanbul-based beat-maker and bass-loving experimentalist who last featured on Tektosag way back in 2013. His return to the imprint boasts a trio of tracks on one-side, with an attractive, etched illustration on the other. He begins with "Afromax", a two-minute flurry of chopped experimental hip-hop beats, mangled bicycle bell and nuts-and-bolts percussion and wonky, shape-shifting electronics. Gantz Seytan remixes, cannily emphasizing the wonkiness of the beats on an outer-space excursion that's near hallucinatory in its twisted, slow motion approach. To round things off, Sevincli offers up his rework of Grup Ses cut "Mimar", re-casting it as a dystopian, ever-changing experimental beatscape rich in redlined sounds and epileptic drumbeats.

  5. Exile (Taquwami remix)
Review: Fledgling UK label The Full Hundred continue their efforts to straddle the fine line between the zeitgeist and the outer reaches of pop music with this 12" from Boston producer JLZUZ MILLION. The alter ego of 20 year old Joseph Zucco, JLSUS MILLION has by and large become known for his behind the buttons work, adding some production weight to last year's Illusions Of record by Charlie XCX's as well as collaborating with Chicago rapper Sasha Go Hard. Error is quite a watershed moment for Zucco then, and the three original cuts suggest JLSUS MILLION is comparable to a turbo charged Clams Casino. Comes with remixes from Magical Mistakes and Taquwami.

  4. Will Saul & Kommon - "Two For One" (Appleblim remix) (6:29)
Review: As a follow-up to Will Saul's exclusive-packed - and generally well received - DJ Kicks set, !K7 has decided to reissue two of the most celebrated tracks, with fresh new remixes. On the A-side you'll find Jabru and Joel Culpepper's "Church" - a decidedly organic, soulful chunk of deep house/UK garage fusion - with accompanying Zed Bias rub. The UKG veteran gives it a bouncy, bassy two-step makeover, wisely retaining Culpepper's brilliant vocals. Flip for Will Saul and Komon's spacey "Two For One", where dreamy flourishes rub shoulders with throbbing electronics and delicate house beats. The remix is provided by Appleblim, who adds a new layer of percussive toughness - in a bruk-meets-two-step style - whilst retaining the warmth of the original.

Review:  Joe Taylor aka JT The Goon is part of the neo-grime movement, and it was only a matter time before we'd hear his beats on the sublime Keysound imprint - home to the likes of Beneath, Kowton, Logos, Wen and many other bass experimenters. "Oil On Ice" sounds exactly like its title implies, a slow-paced bundle of drunken beats surrounded by delicate swarms of grimey synths. There's three extra versions of the tune, too: Version 1 ups the tempo and drops a juke beat over the same liquid synths, version 2 staggers between garage and two-step, while Version 3 is the closest thing to techno on here, albeit broken and swung-out.

The intense Latin percussion workout of "PHONE" sounds like Sergio Mendes on steroids in this relentless epic, while "Rhythm #1" is more restrained in its exotic execution. Jamal Moss does an impressive job as ever on the remix. His analogue hardware jam turning the track into something else completely.

Review: Announced back in September, news of the first release of substance from Kode 9 and The Spaceape in three years was naturally roundly greeted given their status at the top of the pecking order for apocalyptic producer-MC combos. Of course the release of Killing Season has been massively overshadowed by the recent passing of The Spaceape (aka Stephen Samuel Gordon) after a long battle with a rare form of cancer, but his commitment to music has remained undimmed despite health issues and this five track EP is as good as anything the pair have worked on. It's as dark as ever, but "Devil Is A Liar" too shows a lighter, more limber approach to the finished product, not so leaden in British urban dread. The minimalism reaches a peak on "Heart" with its slithering smatterings of trap and plush chords, while The Spaceape rips the human condition to shreds, and the later into the EP you go the more adventurous the tracks become.

Kousin takes the lead with Cloaka as they kidnap us and take us deep into the dusky desert wilderness on a bumpy halftime drumset, Yak follows with a much more visceral tribal shaker while Ebb's "Raiders" takes us back to technfunk haven of yore HUM via Detroit. PPCS002 (hand-numbered 12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: PPCS 002. Rel: 13 Oct 15
  1. Pondering (feat Beezy) (4:29)
  2. Shadows (4:54)
Review: Following their debut with Hi5Ghost, Paper Cranes returns with another highly limited double-up from Bristol-based Lamont. Beezy takes the lead on "Pondering", adding a wry sarcasm and wit over Lamont's spacious 30th century garage lickage. "Shadows" lives on the B: a creeped out broken beat gem that's part tribal, part proto-dubstep, part UK garage and part tech, it's a cavernous calling card for the most passionate of cellar dwellers. Only 300 copies pressed, no represses!
