Review: Sublime retro future breaks from Keysound affiliate Etch. As suggested in the title, none of these breaks have real titles; it's just all about the crisp drum work, vast roominess and old school dynamics from the brushed drum swing of the first slice and the rubber ball bass of the second, right the way through the ghostly vocal tones and MC commands on the fourth slice, this is the sound of a man who knows his foundations inside out. Sneaker Social Club don't release anywhere near as much as they should.... But when they do you should always pay attention.

Waterfall (12")
Cat: TRIANGLE 22. Rel: 28 Mar 14
  1. Salt Carousel
  2. Fuck Idol
  3. Propeller
  4. Waterfall
Review: Music from the young Joshua Leary has been sporadic since he emerged on a wave of YouTube hype at the tail end of 2011, with only the Kings and Them mixtape and this year's one-sided Duga-3release on Record Store Day, but given he received a production credit on Kanye West's Yeezus album last year his relative silence can be forgiven. As such the Waterfall EP represents perhaps Leary's first proper release, and it shows that he has come a long way since the early days of his career. Containing four tracks that bridge the gap between jungle, hip hop and ambient music, Waterfall is both delicate and savage in equal measure, especially on the closing title track, where plaintive piano and semi-automatic snares collide to thrilling effect.

  1. Dumb Hummer (7:05)
  2. All The Time (5:31)
Review: Somewhat surprisingly, it's been a while since we last heard from Bristol-based bass soldier Facta (AKA former Idle Hands, Bloc and Ancient Monarchy producer Oscar Henson). He's kept it simple for his first outing on Pev and Kowton's Livity Sound stable, serving up two lusciously dreamy, spaced-out cuts. Check first A-side "Dumb Hummer", a breezy shuffler blessed with sparkling computer beeps, post-tropical machine rhythms, ear-catching hand percussion and a decidedly restless bassline. B-side "All The Time" is warmer and woozier in feel. It sees Henson wrap a gentle but weighty, UK garage influenced rhythm in waves of hazy, dreamy synthesizer chords and ricocheting, dub-wise vocal samples.

Fallow & Chalice EP (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: CHOW 002. Rel: 27 Nov 17
  1. Fallow - "Blitz" (4:12)
  2. Fallow - "Northern Don" (4:01)
  3. Fallow - "Operation Dark Fruit VIP" (3:18)
  4. DJ Chalice - "Rewind Me" (4:25)
  5. DJ Chalice - "Artois Anthem" (4:26)
  6. DJ Chalice - "Raise Ya Chalice" (3:40)
Review: Chow Down serves up its second release with the adventurous grime exploits of Fallow and DJ Chalice, twisting out all kinds of audacious bass shapes that would set the dance alight at parties such as Boxed. Fallow takes the A side with confidence, fresh from a release on Blood Frenzy, and "Blitz" shows the emergent producer is taking no prisoners with a hail of bullets and haunting Indian classical samples. "Northern Don" is a more wobbly synth-rich beat, while "Operation Dark Fruit VIP" amps up the grime strings. DJ Chalice has a lighter touch, bringing in some sunnier melodics and embracing the RnB influences on "Artois Anthem".

Straight & Arrow (heavyweight vinyl 12" picture disc)
Cat: ZEN 12337X. Rel: 28 Feb 13
  1. Straight & Arrow (original)
  2. Straight & Arrow (Four Tet remix)
Review: Avid record buyers should be more than familiar with "Straight & Arrow" a pleasant, bumping excursion through warbling vocal edits and soft brushed beats from Falty DL. Not only was it a highlight of his recently released Hardcourage LP, but Ninja Tune have already issued it in single format replete with a diverse clutch of remixes from Gold Panda, Four Tet and ballroom duo Mike Q and Divoli S'vere. This picture disc edition is clearly aimed at the fetishistic Drew Lustman completists out there, weighing in at a hefty 180g and brandishing some superlative graphics from the distinct visual agency La Boca. It also houses the seven minutes of dewy eyed, slowly percolating techno that was the remix from the irrepressible Four Tet on the flip.

Power (12")
Cat: SWAMP 028. Rel: 29 Apr 14
  1. Huff & Puff Bruk
  2. Mo
Review: Making a welcome return to Swamp 81 after the Mean Streets pair of releases, Falty DL is on superlative form as ever with a pair of direct cuts that play on different sides of his production personality. "Huff & Puff Bruk" takes the fundamentals of 2-step and infuses it with lazy jazz and ethereal tones for a crisply funking, whimsical cut that should get all soulful spinners in a lather. On the flip things get edgier as "Mo" takes sharply looped vocal samples and works them around clattering slices of breaks to whip up the kind of frenzy that Tessela and co. inspire with their own rum choppery.

Review: 2 B Real: an exciting new venture from Finn and Local Action. A chance for Finn to delve deeper into his influence and hone his raw, loopy physical style, this launch EP is a strong statement of intent. "Late At Night" is a jacking Detroit-minded jam that wouldn't go amiss deep in a DJ Bone selection while "Lightwork" captures Fox in suave Swing Ting mode. His bars rising the dreamy chords cascade, it's a fusion that refuses to be categorised. Do yourself a favour and keep 2 B Real on the radar.

  3. Tunnelvision (Don Froth Big Jeep remix)
  4. Tunnelvision (West Norwood Cassette Library remix)
Review: The latest 12" from the Froth' N US label overseen by the wonderfully named Don Froth is an almighty sound clash between London, Detroit and Los Angeles. Last seen providing the bruk house anthem "Lifting Weights" to We Are Family Vol. 1, the maiden 12? release from WNCL Recordings, Froth returns to the scene of his Reflex EP for UNO with a quartet of heavy duty remixes. Froth himself provides two reworks and he's complemented by the presence of Mr West Norwood Cassette Library and the all round Detroit legend that is Anthony 'Shake' Shakir who adds that extra touch of class with a typically manic percussive take on the title track.

  1. Last Forever
  2. Heaven Sent
Review: It's been at least a hot minute since the last heavyweight release from Swamp 81 dropped (and they don't get much heavier than a double pack of body music from Boddika). The wait has totally been worth it as Funkbias sees UKG legend Zed Bias team up with Rinse FM's excellently named Funk Butcher for two drops of typically forward thinking music. "Last Forever" burst uneasily out of the rumbling groove that opens the track into masterful concoction of vocal affectations, burning synth beams, snapping tribal drums and trademark Zed Bias bass. "Heaven Sent" does indeed begin like it was sent from above with gentle piano melodies lulling you in before being engulfed by a heavily pressurised flex of 808s and more crafty vocal dicing. The interplay between the soft and harsh elements is quite brilliant. Those who like a fine example of cover art will go weak at the knees over the Will Bankhead embossed design too.

  1. 2-4-6
  2. 2-4-6 (Desto remix)
Review: Well Rounded Records revealed their intentions to cease operating as a standard record label at the end of the year for wholly admirable reasons, and they'll truly be missed for anyone with a real interest in current strains of bass music. Since their 2009 inception, Well Rounded has steered clear of the tepid, zeitgeist chasing end of the bass music spectrum and remained true to the rugged and rude hardcore continuum. This two track 12" from Nottingham veteran Geiom is a case in point. "2 4 6" is a bastard melding of UK Funky rhythmics and nascent Detroit electro augmented by some rude vocal work from Terrible Shock. It's blessed by a remix from the Finnish school of excellence too with a spinal tapped Scandinavian carnival refix from the man like Desto.

Are You Losing My Hearing? (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: MSN 017. Rel: 04 Sep 15
  1. Are You Losing My Hearing? (5:19)
  2. Moneychangers (6:59)
Review: Tom 'Dam Mantle' Marshallsay and Rich McMaster from Golden Teacher were first granted an outlet as General Ludd through Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter's Mister Saturday Night last year with the breathless pair of house burners that made up the Woo Ha 12". Since then the General has brought the Luddite house sound to Clan Destine, 10 Thousand Yen and Autonomous Africa among others and now lands back on the Mister for the keenly anticipated Are You Losing My Hearing? Another two-track exercise in 12" dynamism, the title cut finds GL in sprightly house mood with a rubbery feel not too dissimilar to Gerd's Geeeman output. Flip it over and "Moneychangers" veers off into more dystopian, heads down territory with some killer modular squiggles throughout.

Review: Following in the same vein as recent XL signing Sam Gelliatry, Gila steps up to XL with four barbed slabs of fractured future soul. "Tuff Whispers" is an ethereal, church rumbling 25th century ballad graced with chilling ghosted vocals. "SnoPack" and "Don't Chirp" take us deeper into the crypts with the same minimal elements but much darker, galvanised beats. "Jetski Moment" glides us off into the sunset on a much deeper synth-struck note that's powered by subtle but strong sub engines. Stirring.

  1. 106 Slipper (5:32)
  2. Trench Cadence (4:50)
Review: Denver based Kyle Reid aka Gila merges his rap music past with a newfound knack for banging warehouse techno on his first release for his own Hunnaban Inc. Reid has been engineering unpredictable beats for some time - his debut solo 12" was on XL in 2016's (the Genkidama EP), as well as Pick Six on Benji B's Deviation imprint .He's also been releasing as part of rap duo Gorgeous Children (alongside Face Vega) since the early 2010s. The A side features the seething and slow-burning bass techno of "106 Slipper" which will appeal to fans of UK producers such as Pangaea or Pearson Sound. On the flip, be prepared to be hypnotised by some intense polyrhythms on "Trench Cadence" which soon degrades into somewhat abrasive territory.

  6. In Tha Trap (5:38)
Review: Etch & Ilk's grid-hating stable heads west to Philly for some spiritual guidance Gohda-style. Wavey, trippy and breezily cosmic, each original sucks us deep into its textures; the ebb and flow background arpeggio and rolling processed breaks and subdued melancholy on "Cybercity", the far-out 22nd century hip-hop beats of "Corrupted Angels", the weirdo squelch-ghetto creeper "Graverobber" and the crisp-beat Atlanta-bound highlight "In Tha Trap". Remix-wise TMSV takes "Graverobber" deep inside the church crypts for amplified harmonics while Bulu adds more of a left-sided club bang to "Corrupted Angels". Bang for your bucks; bun this at your peril.

  4. Matrix Wave (4:44)
Review: Alan Arbelaez makes his first outing on vinyl, launching the Keepers Of The Wild label with a forthright selection of rave minded goodies pitched at the darker side of the dance. "Ravejavik" revolves around terse breakbeats and uneasy DX7 keys, making for a most intense of club workouts pitched at an even tempo. "Downton Abbey Trax" equally keeps the tempo slow and deadly as a hailstorm of rave tropes meet with emotive string samples, while "Hidden Agenda" explores paranoid house with pan pipe leads flown in over the top. The release rounds off with "Matrix Wave", a more meditative, dubstep flavoured cut showing another side to this emergent artist.

Review: It's been a little while since Kyle Hall dropped his album The Boat Party, but now the Detroit powerhouse is back on Hyperdub to indulge the freakier end of his studio output inline with his previous Kaychunk 12" for Kode 9's outpost. "Girl U So Strong" is a stirring beast of a track, starting in scattered fragments of bass patterns, vocal snippets and woodblock hits, gradually forming into a starlit stepper of the highest calibre. "Take Me Away" comes on like a Detroit take on the Purple phenomenon, all sticky synth lines and Mega Drive melodies but roughed up with ample grittiness.

Review: Helm's release from last year, World In Action, was one of our top picks from Will Bankhead's TTT store, and still deserves to be picked if you missed it the first time round. As such, it's no surprise that Helm himself has wanted to relaunch the EP, as a remix affair, on his own excellent Alter imprint. Truth be told, there is so much more to be said in these tunes, thanks to their loose and ambiguous properties, and it's safe to say that he's picked exactly the right group of artists to help him elevate them to the next level. Parris, Low Jack, Laurel Halo, Beneath, and Sky H1 land on Helm's originals with grievous intentions, each offering a visible shade of their own styles and takes on the enlarged techno domain - a detuned, demassed, and utterly destroyed collection of sounds. Big.

Trappy kicks, halloween humanizations, treacle subs and a wavy bass hook that weaves and bobs in a grimey style, this one hits the chest hard. Remix-wise Hodge's Swedish affiliate Pedder Mannerfelt adds a harder step and technoid energy to proceedings for added bite. Sweet dreams.

Review: Ahead of the release of the Ytivil Dnuos compilation, Peverelist has opted to turn out a 12" that revisits two tracks from the recent past and sheds some fresh light on them. The label boss himself takes "Amor Fati" by Hodge to task, and turns out a delicately poised but satisfyingly weighty version replete with twinkling synth lines and jagged rhythmic incantations. Hodge meanwhile gets to have some fun with Bruce's "Tilikum", and weaves an emotional techno variation out of the component parts that stands amongst his most impassioned works to date, thanks in no small part to the heart-rending sweeps of chord that blanket the peak of the track.

  1. Stand Up (Pangaea mix) (5:48)
Review: If you've been out and about this summer, there's a fair chance that you'll have danced hard to Pangaea's fine remix of Loleatta Holloway's "Stand Up", a gospel-influenced screamer that was repeatedly sampled by house producers in the mid 1990s. Pangaea's version first appeared on his killer, double A-side "2 Remixes" white label back in August, and here gets an official Salsoul Records release. It's amongst the producer's most potent revisions to date, with Holloway's brilliant vocal rising above a tough-as-teak fusion of speaker-troubling sub-bass, clap-happy, two-step drum machine beats and layered tribal percussion. Heavy and carnival-friendly, it's quickly turning into one of the dance anthems of 2017.

Review: The funny thing about Bristol's Livity Sound is that it manages to take on a new life with each and every release that emanates from its star-studded catalogue. Recently, we had Mosca and Hodge dropping some badness, while Peverelist and Kowton have been holding it down for donkey's years thanks to constant fluxes of new, game-changing bass music. This time it's newcomer I III who delivers the goods, coming through with the wonky steps of "Dolce" at first, a bouncy bit of side-step techno with that inimitably loose UK flow at its epicentre. On the flip, "Bun So Nude" ups the tempo and unleashes a formidable blockade of bleeps that'll have you hypnotised in no time - not to mention that sweet cascade of tribal rhythms too!

It was with the latter that Illum Sphere released his debut album Ghosts Of Then and Now in 2014, and the music has slowed down since then, with just a RSD released Spectre Vexd doublepack arriving later that year. The wait is over however, as Illum Sphere confidently strides forward with this club-ready Second Sight 12" for Ninja Tune with both the title track and B-side "Ritual" apparently "reflective of a shift to a more machine-sounding approach" from the producer and bodes well for future Illum Sphere music. This is a less formulaic, and more highly resonant Illum Sphere and comes highly recommended.

And What (12")
Cat: HALC 003. Rel: 26 Jan 16
  1. And What? (2:35)
  2. Chat 'Bout? (3:38)
  3. High Rise (3:13)
  4. Make Ends Meet (7:01)
  5. Make Ends Meet (London Something version) (3:11)
Review: If you hadn't heard of Imaginary Forces before his release on Bedouin back in October, you'll be pleased to hear that he has been active since the late 2000's, and has also put out a tonne of quality music through his Sleep Codes label. He's up on Rabit's Halcyon Veil to kick start the label's 2016, and he's come through with five jaw-dropping slices of industrial grit-funk. From "And What?" to "Make Ends Meet", the dude drops a barrel-load of sic-fi rhythms, all charged with a distinctive noise edge to blow your speakers out. Think Prurient meets Aaron Dilloway, or Joe from Hessle Audio having a not-so-polite conversation with Vereker. It's hot, heavy, and violent.

  5. Simmer (3:16)
  6. Ghost World (3:48)
Review: Given his recent form, it was probably only a matter of time before fast-rising Glaswegian Inkke made an appearance on LuckyMe. Variously informed by grime, heavy Memphis rap, Rustie and Hudson Mohawke, Inkke's productions slip effortlessly into the LuckyMe catalogue. There's much to admire amongst the six tracks that make up Secret Palace, including a pair of robust club instrumentals - "Chores" and "Simmer" - which have long been staples in the sets of Skepta and D Double E. Our pick, though, has to be heavyweight grime roller "Tales From The Quick", which peppers a weighty sub-bass line and machine-gun percussion with woozy synthesizer lines.

  1. Pain (4:41)
  2. Crystal Ember (3:11)
  3. Closa (3:07)
  4. Roll Out (3:23)
Review: Twwth & Desto welcome brand new act Inner to the fold by way of this crystalline quartet of 23rd century trap constructions. Swaggering on the cosmic side, there's a touch of the moody Hudsons to the opening track "Pain" before the beats step up into more of grime energy and textures melt into a wavy sensation on "Crystal Ember". Dig deeper for the fractured, clipped and sense-blurring "Closa" before a final 135 hurrah on the RL Grime meets Nick Warren spatial star-gazer. Sweet dreams.

Constrict (12")
Cat: TEC 096. Rel: 07 Dec 16
  1. Constrict (5:19)
  2. Running Man (5:24)
Review: Ipman aka Jack Gibbons from London has appeared on a who's who of labels that are considered as some of UK bass' finest such as Cold and Tempa. He now presents his third release for Bristol institution Tectonic, following up last year's brilliant Depatterning LP. On "Constrict" he serves up a pummelling and brutalist techno journey that's certainly heavy on the low end (be assured) plus some serious laser zaps that resonate violently; this one could impress the punters in Berlin's warehouse parties too! On the flip there's the brooding industrial behemoth titled "Running Man", featuring layers of textural and abrasive metal sounds that has earned him releases on labels like Osiris Musik.
