  1. Second Sight (6:45)
  2. Ritual (5:51)
Review: First making his name as a producer on local Manc operation Fat City, Hoya Hoya resident Illum Sphere has quite the cultured discography with high profile labels like Tectonic, Monkeytown, 3024 and Ninja Tune in his locker. It was with the latter that Illum Sphere released his debut album Ghosts Of Then and Now in 2014, and the music has slowed down since then, with just a RSD released Spectre Vexd doublepack arriving later that year. The wait is over however, as Illum Sphere confidently strides forward with this club-ready Second Sight 12" for Ninja Tune with both the title track and B-side "Ritual" apparently "reflective of a shift to a more machine-sounding approach" from the producer and bodes well for future Illum Sphere music. This is a less formulaic, and more highly resonant Illum Sphere and comes highly recommended.

  3. High Rise (3:13)
  4. Make Ends Meet (7:01)
  5. Make Ends Meet (London Something version) (3:11)
Review: If you hadn't heard of Imaginary Forces before his release on Bedouin back in October, you'll be pleased to hear that he has been active since the late 2000's, and has also put out a tonne of quality music through his Sleep Codes label. He's up on Rabit's Halcyon Veil to kick start the label's 2016, and he's come through with five jaw-dropping slices of industrial grit-funk. From "And What?" to "Make Ends Meet", the dude drops a barrel-load of sic-fi rhythms, all charged with a distinctive noise edge to blow your speakers out. Think Prurient meets Aaron Dilloway, or Joe from Hessle Audio having a not-so-polite conversation with Vereker. It's hot, heavy, and violent.

  5. Simmer (3:16)
  6. Ghost World (3:48)
Review: Given his recent form, it was probably only a matter of time before fast-rising Glaswegian Inkke made an appearance on LuckyMe. Variously informed by grime, heavy Memphis rap, Rustie and Hudson Mohawke, Inkke's productions slip effortlessly into the LuckyMe catalogue. There's much to admire amongst the six tracks that make up Secret Palace, including a pair of robust club instrumentals - "Chores" and "Simmer" - which have long been staples in the sets of Skepta and D Double E. Our pick, though, has to be heavyweight grime roller "Tales From The Quick", which peppers a weighty sub-bass line and machine-gun percussion with woozy synthesizer lines.

  4. Roll Out (3:23)
Review: Twwth & Desto welcome brand new act Inner to the fold by way of this crystalline quartet of 23rd century trap constructions. Swaggering on the cosmic side, there's a touch of the moody Hudsons to the opening track "Pain" before the beats step up into more of grime energy and textures melt into a wavy sensation on "Crystal Ember". Dig deeper for the fractured, clipped and sense-blurring "Closa" before a final 135 hurrah on the RL Grime meets Nick Warren spatial star-gazer. Sweet dreams.

Constrict (12")
Cat: TEC 096. Rel: 07 Dec 16
  1. Constrict (5:19)
  2. Running Man (5:24)
Review: Ipman aka Jack Gibbons from London has appeared on a who's who of labels that are considered as some of UK bass' finest such as Cold and Tempa. He now presents his third release for Bristol institution Tectonic, following up last year's brilliant Depatterning LP. On "Constrict" he serves up a pummelling and brutalist techno journey that's certainly heavy on the low end (be assured) plus some serious laser zaps that resonate violently; this one could impress the punters in Berlin's warehouse parties too! On the flip there's the brooding industrial behemoth titled "Running Man", featuring layers of textural and abrasive metal sounds that has earned him releases on labels like Osiris Musik.

  1. Ishan Sound & Hodge - "C5" (4:37)
  2. Ishan Sound & Muttley - "Still Smoking" (4:24)
Review: Having recently notched up 100 releases, Tectonic begins a new era by offering up a suitably weighty collaborative release from Peng Sound regular Ishan Sound. On side A, the Young Echo member joins forces with Hodge - owner of the nicest hair in techno - for the deep and dreamy dubstep shuffle of "C5", where fluid riffs dance above a blazed but powerful beat. Muttley lends a hand on flipside cut "Still Smoking", an altogether livelier and more aggressive - if still suitably deep and hazy - 140 BPM workout that comes complete with stabbing, grime style riffs and some serious subsonic bass.

Review: Previously spotted on Boomarm Nation, Turkish bass experimentalists make their debut on Innamind's Blacklist imprint with four of the nuttiest, most far-out tracks you'll hear this season. Sitting somewhere between Modeselektor and Squarepusher but with dubbier roots, highlights include the tripped out harmonic headiness of "Heavy Machyn Gun" and "Phix", the slo-mo white knuckle ride with fellow Turk Gantz. Off the planetary hook.

  4. Exile
  5. Exile (Taquwami remix)
Review: Fledgling UK label The Full Hundred continue their efforts to straddle the fine line between the zeitgeist and the outer reaches of pop music with this 12" from Boston producer JLZUZ MILLION. The alter ego of 20 year old Joseph Zucco, JLSUS MILLION has by and large become known for his behind the buttons work, adding some production weight to last year's Illusions Of record by Charlie XCX's as well as collaborating with Chicago rapper Sasha Go Hard. Error is quite a watershed moment for Zucco then, and the three original cuts suggest JLSUS MILLION is comparable to a turbo charged Clams Casino. Comes with remixes from Magical Mistakes and Taquwami.

  3. Will Saul & Kommon - "Two For One" (original mix) (5:23)
  4. Will Saul & Kommon - "Two For One" (Appleblim remix) (6:29)
Review: As a follow-up to Will Saul's exclusive-packed - and generally well received - DJ Kicks set, !K7 has decided to reissue two of the most celebrated tracks, with fresh new remixes. On the A-side you'll find Jabru and Joel Culpepper's "Church" - a decidedly organic, soulful chunk of deep house/UK garage fusion - with accompanying Zed Bias rub. The UKG veteran gives it a bouncy, bassy two-step makeover, wisely retaining Culpepper's brilliant vocals. Flip for Will Saul and Komon's spacey "Two For One", where dreamy flourishes rub shoulders with throbbing electronics and delicate house beats. The remix is provided by Appleblim, who adds a new layer of percussive toughness - in a bruk-meets-two-step style - whilst retaining the warmth of the original.

Review: Detroitian beatsmith, Platinum Pied Piper and Tiny Hearts founder Waajeed flips from Jeedo to Jeedeci for this unique slice of space-aged hip-hop. Fusing elements of juke, trap, techno and classic 90s R&B to great effect, both versions carefully balance the stark out-there beats with the soft harmonies and rich chords of the R&B sample. Fans of anything that's been delivered on DJ Shadow's Liquid Amber will be all over this.

Review:  Joe Taylor aka JT The Goon is part of the neo-grime movement, and it was only a matter time before we'd hear his beats on the sublime Keysound imprint - home to the likes of Beneath, Kowton, Logos, Wen and many other bass experimenters. "Oil On Ice" sounds exactly like its title implies, a slow-paced bundle of drunken beats surrounded by delicate swarms of grimey synths. There's three extra versions of the tune, too: Version 1 ups the tempo and drops a juke beat over the same liquid synths, version 2 staggers between garage and two-step, while Version 3 is the closest thing to techno on here, albeit broken and swung-out.

Unity EP (clear vinyl 12")
Cat: MOM UK3. Rel: 28 Jun 13
  1. Never Say Never
  2. Inside Of Me
  3. Unity
Review: It's been a while since King Thing last surfaced, and now he does so with a fresh EP of hybrid beats for Millions Of Moments UK, the spin-off label of more bass orientated business. These particular tracks twitch with intricacy as they occupy a space somewhere near electro, not least on lead track "Never Say Never". With a snappy square wave bass line and a killer stop-start groove, well-placed chords and snippet samples inject a little soul into the machinations as the track develops. "Inside Of Me" opts for a more old-school flavoured stab as its central hook, relegating the beat to the bottom of the pecking order in favour of a sizable chord and another plethora of curious found sounds. "Unity" rounds things off with a catchy workout that revolves around a woodblock melody and a cyclical patter of technoid beats.

Review: Brit in Melbourne Kloke follows up previous releases on this impressive NYC label (and sterling effort in 2014 on Sub Squared) with something different. The intense Latin percussion workout of "PHONE" sounds like Sergio Mendes on steroids in this relentless epic, while "Rhythm #1" is more restrained in its exotic execution. Jamal Moss does an impressive job as ever on the remix. His analogue hardware jam turning the track into something else completely.

  1. Know Yourself (5:44)

  3. Stepping Out Of Yesterday (7:33)
Review: It's been a few years since long-time Bristol mates Komonazmuk and Appleblim collided on wax (three years to be a little more precise) Making up for lost time the pair lay down three more stark fusions that shimmer with both of artists qualities in equal measure. "Know Yourself" catches and infects with Blim's loopy technoid insistency but kicks with Komon's brutal swagger, "Enigmatic Light" is all about the creep as a foggy weave and echoing percussion gradually build us into light-kicked hypnotic breakbeat. Finally "Stepping Out Of Yesterday" peers into a bleak future with groaning chords, unhurried beats and a meandering acid line that brings everything together.

Review: He may remain as busy as ever as a live performer, but it's been some two years since Lewis Roberts last graced the shelves of records stores with a new Koreless 12" (although he did contribute to a RSD release from Young Turks this year). A mark of a true artist is to never stand still, for your sound to demonstrate a tangible level of progression so it's refreshing to see Koreless experimenting with a more club focussed sound on this 12" and move away from the cinematic textures of his last record Yugen. Both "TT" and "Love" are malleable tracks that could be combined with percussive DJ tools to devastating effect.

  1. The West End As It Will Be (5:54)
  2. Line Sunk Like I'm Sunk (5:49)
Review: Is 2015 Batu's year? The Bristol producer first served notice of his talents for mutated, bass-led techno back in 2013 with a pair of standout 12"s for Cold Recordings and Livity's reverse sub-label. After some time out of the spotlight, Batu has returned with renewed vigour this year as new and exciting 12"s have popped up on Hotline and Beneath's Mistry. The establishment of his own Timedance label seems an important part of the Batu story too and this second release finds him adopting the A&R mantle to introduce L. Sae. Admittedly no newcomer, L. Sae is the latest production handle of Joe Higgins, a UK producer previously known for his output under the Metrist name for labels such as Fifth Wall and Resin. This two track 12", The West End As It Will Be, sees Matthews veer off into more abstract techno terrain, especially the title track which is caked with tape dust. A great 12" this.

Review: NYC songstress Lafawndah makes her big label debut on Warp with some killer jams produced by Night Slugs lynchpin Lvis 1990. "Town Crier" is bass driven urban dance with her sweet soaring vocals backed by stuttering and clattering industrial textures. "Ally" is a full frontal and funky bass assault with exotic middle eastern instrumentation infused throughout as she declares "I'll take you like in like a firefly". "Tan" is the most restrained and stripped effort on here, with massively reverberated drums carrying the track wonderfully while "Crumb" is the most chilled track: it's pop inflected and will take you on a journey with its immaculately programmed steel drums. Big things!

Beezy takes the lead on "Pondering", adding a wry sarcasm and wit over Lamont's spacious 30th century garage lickage. "Shadows" lives on the B: a creeped out broken beat gem that's part tribal, part proto-dubstep, part UK garage and part tech, it's a cavernous calling card for the most passionate of cellar dwellers. 4. Sweet Vanilla (5:42)
Review: An air of mystique BFDM's 11th release both musically and conceptually as the shadowy Lastrack steps up with four staggering slices of innovative broken techno music. "Clairette To Die" is ghost of dub past coming back to make us pay for brostep - sinister, menacing and rich in textures, this blows minds on every occasion. "Zdry Connexion" tips a wry, subversive nod to raves gone past with its hypey stuttering edits while "Kyle Aux Rennes" takes everything you thought you knew about techno and turns it inside out in the grainiest, most unpredictable way. "Sweet Vanilla" plays the role of dessert - a sweet palette cleanser from the chewy gulliness of the previous three courses, it's an airy, loosely-hewn roller drenched in deep layers of atmospheres. Breath-taking.

Little is known about him besides that he's from Manchester and he's sculpting some seriously singular beats. "Down The Well" calls on us with a familiar vocal, subverted to smithereens over a spaced-out two-step, "Lillies" sweeps us away with strange rubber ball bass jitters and an alien drum arrangement that hypnotises at first click, finally "Many Faces" adds a little glam-swamp to the mix with its swaggering tripletty rhythm and eerie textures. Some Lores are made to be broken.

Review: Machinedrum heralds his next album on new home Ninja Tune with the Eyesdontlie single, introducing the Vapor City concept the producer said was inspired by a recurring dream . Fans of his stellar 2011 album Room(s) will be glad to hear his signature sound incorporating footwork and more experimental elements is still intact, though the lead track here seems steeped in dreamier textures. The B-side track "Body Touch" however is a different beast, harking back to his earlier hip hop-inspired productions. An excellent single that bodes well for the album...

Review: M&P continue to deliver sterling bass dynamite - both on their own label Materials and Redlight's Lobster Boy imprint. This is no exception; with sinewy beats and soulful vocals, it comes on strong like a Deetron cut while its bulbous, ominous subs give it a late '90s Layo & Bushwacka veneer. "Blue Suede" is more tech-minded in its make-up thanks to rolling hi-hats, snares and clipped vocal shots. One for the hands up crew, one for the heads down crew - M&P have delivered something for every occasion right here.
