  1. From Heatuyu
  2. Islands Of Dust
  3. Islands Of Dust (Afrikan Sciences remix)
Review: A new signing to Deepblak finds Aybee's label ever-broadening its repertoire of forward thinking broken beat underpinned by sci-fi attitude and hand-played soul. "From Heat2yu" pivots on a cyclical spread of percussion and a honey-coated voice coos out a message of getting "so far away", while dreamy daubs of synth ping around the broken rhythms. "Islands Of Dust" gets into a more introspective headspace with melancholic tones rubbing up against a skippy 2 step beat. Label regular Afrikan Sciences steps up for a remix of "Islands Of Dust" that sports his trademark tricky time signatures and a positively 'out-there' palette of sound.

  1. Truant
  2. Rough Sleeper
Review: *Burial Repress* The double header of Truant/Rough Sleeper is the second EP from Burial in 2012, and arrives with as little fanfare as the superb Kindred EP did early this year. Unlike that more dancefloor focused record however, this EP harks back to the producer's earlier sound. Of course, being two longform compositions clocking in at 12 and 14 minutes respectively, they're hardly conventional works; each utilises the same liberal use of spectral atmospheres, emotive vocal samples, hollow 2-step beats and nods to jungle as we've come to expect from the producer, but with complex structures that come across more like two sides of an old mixtape recorded from a pair of decrepit turntables. Of course being a mixtape from Burial, this is special stuff indeed - consider it an early Christmas present to yourself.

Subtemple (10")
Cat: HDB 108. Rel: 23 May 17
  1. Subtemple (7:18)
  2. Beachfires (9:51)
Review: Naturally, there's been plenty of hype surrounding this new Hyperdub 10", which features Burial indulging his often-discussed ambient influences. It's a typically creepy and ghostly affair, with the lack of beats - if not rhythmic elements - only serving to amplify the shadowy producer's impeccable sound design and brilliant use of manipulated field recordings. A-side "Subtemple" is particularly paranoid in tone, featuring as it does chilling melody loops, curious vocal samples, looped vinyl crackle and all manner of layered background noise. Flipside "Beachfires" is, if anything, even more dystopian, with Burial basing the action around the kind of pulsing chords that gust back and forth like an autumnal breeze.

Young Death (limited heavyweight vinyl 12")

  1. Young Death (5:52)
  2. Nightmarket (7:28)
Review: Burial's first multiple-track release since "Rival Dealer" three years ago: "Young Death" takes the lead with weave of deep, scratchy and evocative human textures while soulful vocal shards yearn and flutter over soft faraway beats. "Nightmarket" takes an even more introspective meander through the shadowy unknown with fractured arpeggios, distant whispers and thick graininess that envelops almost overwhelmingly. As forward, unusual and unique as ever, Burial remains in a league of his own. Limited.

Decadubs 5 EP (double 12")

  1. Burial - "Lambeth"
  2. Kode9 - "Oh"
  3. Cooly G - "Love Again"
  4. DVA - "Monophonic Nightmare"
  5. Martyn - "Mega Drive Generation" (Dorian Concept remix)
  6. Cooly G - "Him Da Biz"
  7. Funkystepz - "Vice Versa"
Review: Of all the Decadubs double packs issued as part of Hyperdub's exhaustive 10th Anniversary celebrations it's probably this fifth and final edition most label fans have been waiting for. Why's that? Because it offers you the chance to grip the hallowed Burial production "Lambeth" in your hands, one of a clutch of unreleased tracks from the reclusive producer that have been racking up plays on Youtube for some five years in one form or another. However there's plenty more to sink the teeth of your stylus needle into here, with the label's stated focus on a "celebration of house, garage and techno" resulting in some fine dancefloor moves from Kode9, DVA, Cooly G and a blinding Dorian Concept refix of Martyn.

  1. Spread The Butter (4:48)
  2. Dark Butter (3:37)
  3. Liquid Butter (4:49)
  4. Butter Break (3:43)
Review: The mysterious Butterfred Productions have surfaced with some nice angles on the underground deep dubstep sound, as demonstrated on A side cuts "Spread The Butter" with its jagged/off kilter beats, rolling bass and haunting dub chords all working marvellously together. "Dark Butter" (naturally) dives a bit deeper on this paranoid late night cut that employs a more steady four to the floor rhythm. On the flip, the sinister delusions of a stoned mind continue with the slow motion groove of "Liquid Butter" while "Butter Break" cleverly employs some reversed deep house samples over an industrial junkyard rhythm and booming lo-end dynamics. An impressive debut!

Review: Smooth and crunchy each and every... The mysterious Butterfred whizzes up the ingredients and serves up breakfast once again. Slow, spacious, steeped in industrial strength textures, there's some truly unique flavours cooking here. Sludgy Shadowisms on "Toast", Theo Parrish mutations on "Slick Toast", cavernous drum work on "Rubbish Heap" and solemn blues on "Additional Toast", this is a meal like you've never tasted before. Review: Aussie beat bruiser Cassius Select strikes on Accidental Jnr once again. Taking off where "90 / Herd" left us it's another full-strength stew of club fusions. "Essence" boils us right down to a bouncy UK funky-style bashmenty beat as we're bombarded with rubber ball bass licks, "Hype Hour" twists in vocal in the most demonic ways over a set of vibrant chimes and bubbling beats while "Shaolin Soccer" closes the show with skipped-out two-step and iced out atmospheres that wouldn't go amiss on a label like Samurai. Review: The giant energy of an early 90s rave meet classic hip hop beats straight from the dusty SP-1200 on Cazion's debut record:

"Rap music runs very deep in my veins; by the time I was fourteen I was making mixtapes and obsessing over the huge, funky, bombastic sounds of late eighties hip hop," says Cazion's Photocall. "I still aspire to capture the snap and the bigness of the kind of sound you'd hear on a Paul C record, a Public Enemy record, and I still use the the same machines those guys used to do it," he adds, gesturing at the wealth of vintage gear cluttering his retro spaceship of a studio, The Escape Pod. "When you hear the first bar of this song, you might expect some dude with a cameo flattop to start rhyming about the Benzi Box in his Suzuki Samurai at any moment."

"We wanted to take it all the way," adds Maheras, from the depths of a glowing neon couch. "Some people shy away from using certain sounds because they're afraid to sound cheesy - but they forget to have fun. I'd rather have so much fun making a song that I forget to worry."

"Like the dancers we sampled," Photocall agrees. "The vocal snippets are from a British video that was shot on New Years Day, 1993, the morning after a giant rave. It's the middle of some field, people are pushing their cars out of the mud, and this one couple is still dancing their asses off. They don't care that there's no music playing; they're totally in the zone. My man DJ Duane happened to send us the link as we were programming the drums for this record, and something just clicked. We knew we were making this record for those two crazy kids, wherever they are. Possibly still in that field."

Review: Cape Town's CTS dive straight into a new year with the show-stopping "If You Want To". Rolling on an unhurried break with rich emotional textures, it pulls you into their world with a molten persistence that never sits still. Remix-wise Gacha Bakradze adds a little Balearic charm with maintaining the spirit of the original's liquid, perpetual groove development while Edmondson brings us back to the bruk with a broken beat, slightly UKG vibe. There's no ifs about it, you will want to.

  3. Dotted (Dro Carey remix) (5:44)
  4. 8th (4:32)
Review: It's an all-Australian takeover on Tempa for their 107th release, coming through in the shape of Cliques, Sydney's Hamish Dixon and George Nicholas. "Dotted", the title track, is a fistful of rolling kick drums and scattered percussion, all coated in a fine layer of minimalistic bleeping - a new and min-melting strain of UK-flavoured techno with a definite stutter; mastermind Dro Carey (TTT) remixes the track into a stompier, more cinematic bruiser with a vividly odd kind f flex in classic Carey style. "Untitled" goes for a steppers rhythm beneath solitary pads and aqueous melodies, while "8Th" ups the ante and delivers a nasty, menacing groove to get your head bouncing in pigeon-mode. Recommended!

Review: Charlie "Kasket" Baldwin returns to Pinch's formidable Cold Recordings stable, an imprint focused on "new movements in the ever-evolving UK hardcore continuum". For his second salvo for the label, Baldwin serves up four floor-friendly cuts, beginning with the off0kilter drum rhythms, savagely chopped hip-hop vocal samples and trippy stabs of "Lemons". Those searching for heavy sub-bass action should start with the pulverizing low end and polyrhythmic punch of "Bangers", before flipping the disc and dropping the needle on "Quite", a hot-stepping affair that draws influence from both dubstep and UK garage without particularly sounding like either. Further mind-altering insanity can be found on closer "Flat Football", a wild and entertaining mixture of scattergun drum hits and wayward electronics.

Review: For the fourth release on their promising Wisdom Teeth imprint, founders Facta and K-Lone have turned to the combined talents of old pal Alex Coulton, Italian produer Chevel, and fast-rising studio boffin Simo Cell. Coulton kicks things off, delivering a deliciously heavy and floor-friendly concoction that sits somewhere between broken techno, contemporary bass music, and the kind of comforting deepness more associated with hazy house productions. Chevel does an excellent job of calming things down, layering up bleeping electronics and ambient textures to create something reminiscent of mid '90s IDM, before Simo Cell attempts to "Escape The Fate" on a creepy cut that combines fizzing hi-hats and wonky ambient melodies, with drum programming and musical touches borrowed from EBM and industrial

Review: Fresh from a fine outing on Bahnsteig23 under the alternative Cassiard DJ alias, Thomas Cassiard dons the C.R.K alias for an expansive outing on Comic Sans. There's a surprisingly symphonic feel to opener "Sad React Only Plz", which flits from a deep space ambient number to a shuffling IDM wriggler midway through, but there's more forthright fare to be found elsewhere across the EP. Check, for example, the off-kilter drums and sparkling melodies of "100g De Balls" and the intergalactic jungle-techno revivalism of "Plus Loin Que La Police". Arguably the EP's greatest moment, though, is closer "Les Etoiles Sont Plus Hautes Que La Ciel", where elongated chords, bubbly beats and tumbling melodies combine to create a poignant and melancholic mood.

Harnessing the magic of Skatalite's Jonny Moore on both sides, "Mirage" takes us deep into his own cloudy atmospheric universe upon a rolling jazz-minded drum arrangement while "Island Dub" strips everything right back to the crucial constituent parts to allow each rhythmic and dubbed element to sing. Singular.

  6. Pinch & Mumdance - "Big Slug" (feat Riko Dan - Walton remix) (4:35)
Review: To mark a century of releases, admirable Bristol imprint Tectonic has served up something rather special: an EP of future bass business that sees long-serving grime MC Riko Dan adding his flow to fresh beats from some of the label's heaviest hitters. Check, for example, the woozy "purple" synths, ragged sub-bass and stepping beats of the Joker-produced "Hard Food", the indsustrial-strength grime assault of the Pinch-produced "Vibration" and the sparse, clandestine rumble of "Hungry", where Riko Dan's gruff patois flow rises above a skeletal groove. Elsewhere, the Ziro-helmed "Alright Then" sounds like a club anthem in waiting, and Walton's remix of "Big Slug" - a previous club cut from Pinch and Mumdance - is an ethereal, string-laden treat.

  1. Heyvalva Heyvalva Hey
  2. Bottomless Pit
Review: Blank Mind return with their first release since last year's all conquering Goron Sound platter from the Alan Johnson duo, and it's the turn of label founder Sam Purcell to show off his production skills once more as Dance. Lead track "Heyvalva, Heyvalva, Hey" is distinctively named and you are unlikely to forget the track once you hear it either, which plays out like a bizarro version of Demdike Stare's "Hashashin Chant". Whereas as that track was darkness personified, Dance's production is all about the lightness that surrounds the heavily chopped vocal that acts as a focal point as drums snap in and out of action. "Bottomless Pit" is however a much darker production, with loose half step 909 rhythms cascading in an erratic fashion almost in reaction to the sheer terror of the squalling synth tones and jagged junglist basslines. The sense of dystopian dread is only magnified by the foreboding titular vocal sample that repeats itself with a sense of desperation.

Review: London's Dark Sky trio have come a long way over the last three years, first appearing on the mighty 50 Weapons, then jumping on to Mister Saturday Night's catalogue, and now landing most vertically on Germany's Monkeytown - quite impressive if you ask us! The NTS Radio residents serve up "Voyages", a wonky techno side-stepper complete with tribal percussion and a distinct UK feel. Remix duties are taken care of by Francis Inferno Orchestra, who deliver a hypnotic and floor-ready version of the original, and techno God Reshape with his slithering, ultra-stripped back version. Another class act from Monkeytown camp.

Entrenched in the original hardcore foundations, "Here" whittles the same stick that Special Request has whittled so sharply over the last few years. Timeless badness, it's an instant unifier. As always with the Lisbon underground kingpin, fusion and ardent experimentalism characterise the project as we're shifted and beguiled in equal measure at the rising paranoid acid tendrils on "Sinistro", the thumping obese kicks on "Poder Do Vento", the jarring techno necksnap of "Maria Costa", the lucid dreaminess of "KRK", the obscenely tripped-out voodoo instrumentation on "Waaba-Jah" and accordion squeezing technoid sketch "Karma". Review: Dolenz has found his spiritual home at Exit. A breeding ground for boundary-free beat creativity, his far-out fusions are in good company in dBridge's house. This label debut is no exception as we're treated to his broadest palette; the trapped bumps and cuts of "Evesdrop", the eastern string glaze and dense harmonies and chimes of "Geminus" and the sub-soaked swagger and planet-gazing dubbed out halftime of "Some Drum" all comprise and compound to make a serious statement of intent. We have no doubt the London artist will be back on Exit very soon.

Review: "Parallel Universe" is The Dude Of Stratosphear's debut single, featuring the Thai rapper MC Sinnamon. Real name Jerome Doudet, he is a Swiss/French artist and bass player based in Bangkok, Thailand. A DJ, vinyl collector, musician, graphic designer and East Asian music connoisseur, The Dude Of Stratosphear was groomed in the vibrant alternative scene of Geneva, Switzerland. He presents here an cosmic trip between the heat of Chennai's bazaars and Bangkok's chaotic streets. Said to be based on a rare Indian library sample, "Wat That Tong" features samples of Thailand molam queen Yenjit Porntavi, plus a modern dub beat and Indian percussion.

  1. Ballys On (4:12)
  2. Time (5:36)
  3. Oil Gang (4:39)
  4. Floating (5:07)
Review: Fresh from his cavalcade of beats on WPF, Dullah makes his Oil Gang debut and it's every bit as shiny and slick as you'd expect as toxic dollops of drama hang of every cinematic dynamic. Instant hench appeal is created with the strings on "Ballys On", sci-fi synths seduce the cosmic mover in the most chiselled of Gs on "Time" while Oil Gang get their own theme tune by way of floaty synth chimes and a classic b-boy bass funk. Throw in the self-fulfilling "Floating" and you've got yourself a winning document. Never a Dullah moment at Oil Gang eh?
