Re:align EP
  1. Alternate Current - "Borrowed Language" (6:22)
  2. Dreadmaul & Tobe:n - "Homunculus" (6:08)
  3. LCP - "Off Limits" (5:22)
  4. Books - "Cosine" (4:57)
Review: Fresh off the back of Cryptographic's intense 'Echo' release comes this fitting V/A from the ever-intriguing Swiss experimental 170 label Re:st. Music to realign our Covid-ravaged chakras to 'Re:align' introduces three new names to the label; Alternate Current steams out of the gates with a dub techno juggernaut 'Borrowed Language' while Dreadmaul & Tobe:n whip a rhythmic stampede that's screaming to be unleashed on a big system with 'Homunculus'. Flip for two slightly more cosmic tales as label founder LCP gently pats us down with the trickling lolloping loops of 'Off Limits' before Books signs us out with the sparse and skippy 'Cosine'. Refine your alignments.

Cat: LCR 003. Rel: 07 Oct 20
  1. Amor Satyr - "Hohohoi" (3:12)
  2. Soreab - "Cave Walk" (3:51)
  3. Mala Femmina aka DJ Tess - "Ruff" (5:29)
  4. Soreab - "Cave Walk" (Cando remix) (4:45)
Review: Le Chatroom's latest multi-artist offering successfully showcases a string of up-and-coming artists whose music joins the dots between UK funky and a wide variety of global rhythms. Check first Soreab's richly percussive, sub-heavy and smoky 'Cave Walk', a dark, drum-driven excursion which Cando later turns into a more carnival-ready, sweat-soaked workout that sounds tailor-made for peak-time dancefloors. Amor Satyr also impresses with the hard-to-pigeonhole post-dubstep drum science of 'Hohohoi', which sounds like Digital Mystikz jamming with a bunch of Indonesian musicians, while UK funky starlet DJ Tess dons he Mala Femmina alias for the skittish, sub-heavy weightiness of 'Ruff'. Impressive stuff.

Slam Jams Vol 2
Cat: HHANDS 013. Rel: 05 Aug 20
  1. Breaka - "Loose Subs" (5:41)
  2. Guava - "Outerbody Innerspace" (4:56)
  3. Lrds - "Quanda" (5:49)
  4. Dawn Razor - "Be As One 1" (5:37)
Review: Holding Hands are back with another crucial summer VA EP and it's another hearty selection. Breaka's "Loose Subs" takes the lead on a bubbling 160 flex with a vibe that's not dissimilar to Zinc back in his golden days. Guava drops the tempo for an acidic two-step piece while Lrds' "Quanda" is an ice cold electro joint with more shuffle than a poker house. Last but not least Dawn Razor shuts down the EP on a deliciously stripped back breaky tip that blossoms with a new element on every 32. Slam Jam thank you ma'am.

Cong Burn 03
Cong Burn 03 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: CB 03. Rel: 16 Jul 18
  1. Chekov - "Spring" (5:34)
  2. Duckett - "Lost In Israel" (5:06)
  3. Lack - "Track 3" (8:21)
  4. Haddon - "Anabiosis" (3:00)
Review: Cong Burn continues to exercise one of the most promising instincts for future-minded music on this, their third release. It's surprising they haven't done more previously, considering the maturity of their curation, but either way the quality remains at an all time high here, leading in with some light and liquefied 4/4 sonics from Chekov before pirouetting into one of Duckett's illustrious abstractions around the techno blueprint. Label regular Lack is back on side B with the stern and punchy "Track 3," and then Haddon finishes the record off with "Anabiosis," a densely textured, slow creeping trip of a track.

  2. Only The Strong (5:23)
  3. Only The Strong (X-Coast Da Vibe mix) (6:11)
  4. Only The Strong (Big Miz remix) (4:48)
Review: With a title like "Scary Eire", you'd expect the artist behind it to be Irish. We can confirm that DART is indeed from the Emerald Isle. He resides in Dublin, though the bass-heavy, rave-ready cuts he delivers on this Homage label debut are truly international in sound and style. The EP boasts two original tracks: opener "Raided", where emotive, Orbital style lead lines and screams rise above a thickset acid bassline and sweaty drums, and the saucer-eyed, old school stomp of "Only The Strong". The track's early '90s credentials are emphasized further on X-Coast's rushing, stab-sporting flipside remix, while Big Miz's revision re-imagines the track as a wiggling trip through psychedelic acid house territory.

  1. Lemuria (5:57)
  2. Hiperborea (4:49)
  3. Atlantida (5:32)
  4. Mu (2:52)
Review: DNGDNGDNG is a new alias for Dengue Dengue Dengue! and Continentes Perdidos is the first work under this name. The album comes hot on the heels of last year's Zenit & Nadir LP, the 2018 album Son De Los Diablos and Siete Raices from 2016, so keep sup a high quality and high rate of release. With plenty of sound system influences, shadowy vocal sounds and cavernous bass, it is also run through with the jungle sounds and Peruvian rhythms that have defined this duo to date. The results are intriguing and compelling in equal measure.

Of Matter & Spirit Remixes
Cat: HTH 056. Rel: 17 Mar 16
  1. Anatomy Of Light (Lakker remix) (4:40)
  2. Kim & The Wheel Of Life (Throwing Shade remix) (3:42)
  3. Mazda (Mind Body Fitness remix) (4:31)
  4. Mazda (Killing Sound version - feat Rider Shafique & Bogues) (3:03)
Review: Aisha Devi's brilliant Of Matter And Spirit release from last year gets the remix treatment by a stellar cast here, merging her esoteric electronica weirdness into new hybrids. Irish duo Lakker turn "Anatomy of Light" into a freeform techno excursion with ferocious broken beats and Devi's vocals chopped and morphed into new forms. No Pain In Pop/New Ninja Tune signing Throwing Shade turn in a rendition of "Kim & The Wheel Of Life" that's ethereal as much as it is jagged and unusual. Knives associates Mind:Body:Fitness give "Mazda" a turnover that mutates it into some alien urban flavour much like their associates on Kuedo's label. Finally there's another version of the track by Bristol's Killing Sound featuring MC Rider Safique and Bogues exploring the dark side of bass music and truly exorcising the demons.

Diamonds EP

  1. Diamonds (6:20)
  2. Knock It Down (6:22)
  3. Lyrical (5:45)
  4. No Worries (5:04)
Review: Time Is Now is one of the leading proponents of the current garage revival. The reason for that is the freshness they are bringing to the scene and here they welcome a new name to the ranks with DJ Crisps. He operates at the darker end of the spectrum on 'Diamonds', with its low end swagger and yelping vocal stabs. 'Lyrical' taps into a rich vein of UK music with its heavy bass oscillations and 'No Worries' is a popping tune to kick start any party. 'Knock It Down' is our favourite though with its broad bass sweeps and wooden hits, twisted synth patterns and sense of late night menace.

  2. Ray Mound (4:08)
  3. Mad Move (feat TSVI) (4:58)
  4. Bar Bell (5:05)
  5. Original Taste (4:01)
Review: Lithuanian new breed fusionist DJ JM makes his debut on TSVI & Wallwork's Nervous Horizon with his largest, and arguably broadest, EP to date. Smelting down the essence and energy of techno, electro and bass, each of the five tracks hit some pretty far-out spots; "No Days Off" is the big slammer of the pack with its nagging percussive riff and sci-fi tribal vibe, "Ray Mound" flips into a tom-thumping breakbeat swing while "Mad Move" is utter drum drama, all insistent, stripped back and pounding. Finally we have "Bar Bell", where chimes fold and melt into each other as a driving techno rhythm device pings up and down the spectrum, and "Original Taste". The wonkiest cut of the bunch, it's JM's homage to both the local clubs in which he cut his teeth and the faraway worlds he's currently taking us to. No rest for the wicked.

  6. Crush & Burn (4:37)
Review: Melbourne beat fusionist DJ Plead taps deep into his Lebanese roots for this truly body blowing middle eastern infused bass EP. Six tracks of fractured, freeform fun, you're spoilt for choice here. The spasmodic breakbeat freakery of "Salt And Pepper", the rolling momentum and molten hypnotic percussive layers of "Liquify", the rattling drums and staccato flare of "Shoulder Pop" and the strange blend of turbo focus but offbeat funk of "Baharat" are just some of the instantly hip-switching highlights. Essential.

  3. Struction - "Strukture" (4:56)
Review: With this release, the Zenker Brothers' Ilian Tape label has delivered something of a curveball. It sees experimental D&B producer and all round bass head Djrum join the party, sharing space with unknown quantity Struction. Djrum begins with broken techno gem "Untitled 9", cutting up sweaty broken beats, heavy basslines and deep techno electronics. On the flip, we are treated to the sounds of Struction, combining punchy breakbeats with ambient-influenced electronics on the rolling "Don't Blame", before moving further towards beat-less, end-of-night territory with the acid-flecked trip that is "Struktur".

  5. DJ Chalice - "Artois Anthem" (4:26)
  6. DJ Chalice - "Raise Ya Chalice" (3:40)
Review: Chow Down serves up its second release with the adventurous grime exploits of Fallow and DJ Chalice, twisting out all kinds of audacious bass shapes that would set the dance alight at parties such as Boxed. Fallow takes the A side with confidence, fresh from a release on Blood Frenzy, and "Blitz" shows the emergent producer is taking no prisoners with a hail of bullets and haunting Indian classical samples. "Northern Don" is a more wobbly synth-rich beat, while "Operation Dark Fruit VIP" amps up the grime strings. DJ Chalice has a lighter touch, bringing in some sunnier melodics and embracing the RnB influences on "Artois Anthem".

Review: Take a look at the artists to grace the A-side of Decadubs 4 and you'll find a collection of names that have released some of this year's most talked about albums: Lee Gamble, Inga Copeland, The Bug and Fatima Al Qadiri. The B-side, however, hosts Hyperdub regulars like Ikonika and DVA, and the boss Kode9 of course, to more intriguing names like footworker DJ Earl and Jeremy Greenspoon & Borys who have previously released music on Dan Snaith's Jiaolong label. Dean Blunt also appears with a jazzy ambient cut, while Cooly G does the same with the sombre, vocal-driven "Mind".

  3. Jessy Lanza, DJ Spinn & DJ Rashad - "You Never Show Your Love" (Teklife mix) (4:04)
  4. Jessy Lanza - "Fuck Diamond" (Bambounou remix) (7:05)
Review: Last seen lining the Freestyle antics of Morgan Geist's latest project The Galleria on the excellent Calling Card 12" on Environ, Jessy Lanza returns to Hyperdub for a record that pairs her up with the Teklife crew. A superb vocalist, Lanza excels when matched with the rolling snares, crisp kicks and thick bass provided by DJ Spinn and Taso resulting in "You Never Show Your Love" sounding every bit like a modern R&B classic. It's accompanied by a Teklife remix which retains the mood whilst adding some Footwork flex into the mixer (the late DJ Rashad was involved in the production of this too). To close out the record, Hyperdub have slipped in Bambounou's excellent drum heavy remix of Lanza's "F*ck Diamond" which originally featured on one of the label's anniversary compilations last year.

Nine tracks spanning the electronic diaspora, we're treated to everything from warm jacking house ("Brothers & Sisters") to industrial strength techno ("Lethwei") to schizoid bashment ("T.M.K.F") to divine dubbed-up haunted house ("The Chant") and all manners of club flavours in between. Unbounded business.

Review: This debut release from footwork crew Teklife's label sees them pay tribute to DJ Rashad, the late, great innovator who passed away in the spring of 2014. Afterlife gathers together a collection of DJ Rashad tracks co-produced by Rashad's close friends and associates, including DJ Spinn, Traxman, DJ Manny and more. As the label themselves state, this 14 track album really conveys the wealth of musical influences and knowledge Rashad possessed with soul, hip-hop, house, techno and many more all brought together at 160 BPM. "Afterlife is our tribute to our friend and our inspiration. Rest In Peace DJ Rashad," Teklife write. Enough said. A must for all fans of Rashad.

Highlights across this deep, tightly woven bass adventure include the Portishead-style trippy dubtronica of "Comos Los Cerdos", the somnambulant drones and breathy washes of "Lies", the nagging techno loopery of "Dam" and the trembling graveyard soul of "Arcana".
