Review: With an additional run of three club-minded MASSE remix 12"s released this week by Ostgut Ton, the hugely influential label will round up their soundtrack to the Berghain ballet with a collectors box set of six stand out scores from last year's production, six of which pressed to vinyl, with a further 16 on CD. Phillip Sollmann & Marcel Fengler's Din collaboration provide some of the more experimental highlights with the Dettmann-esque "Aetas" and the industrial ambience "Creation" and "Generation", while as you'd expect Henrik Schwarz delivers splashes of flamenco, classical music and rocky pop to the compilation that's unrivalled in production by any other producer making techno.

Review: Fuss and fluff are thrown by the wayside on 'More Water', hearing Sub Basics (Tom Wood) and Witch Trials (formerly of the label MYRYRS) join forces for a new collaboration on Temple Of Sound. Sleek, unfussy dub techno, and yet still unafraid of wetness past the knees, the likes of 'November', 'Technique' and 'Liquify' are seriously well simmered slammers, their projectile chords and wide multichannel drums lending themselves a firmer than firm sectional density, with a mean hardness rivalling that of chromium. Only the B-side dares step into ricketier territory, with '4AM' and 'Morning Meltdown' increasingly conveying that hanging-by-a-thread feeling all to familiar to the early hours floor fiends among us.

Review: Wibo Lammerts is W1BO and he sadly and suddenly passed away back in mid-August 2022. He had worked with this label on his debut album over the course of the last two years. He had always said the long player would be his legacy and that turned out to be all too true. With the support of Wibo's family, U-TRAX is doing what is right and putting out the album in his honour. When Humans Ruled The Earth is a complete and coherent electro overview across 11 visceral tracks. There are acid lacerations, jacked-up cyborg bangers and elastic drum workouts wired up with scintillating synths.

Review: Sebastian Mullaert is a real master of depth and atmosphere. He has been for many years and his WaWuWe project is some of his deepest stuff. Here he offers serene techno for late night motorway driving, underwater dub to get utterly lost in and spacious grooves that journey on the most deft and subtle of synths. This is meditative, heady music for thoughtful moments of escapism. The package is jut as special as the music here - it is a double, black, 180 gram 12" sheathed inside a custom cut and full colour printed hansaboard sleeve.

Review: Walker And Royce and Dirtybird are perfect bedfellows - they both have a penchant for bright, colourful sounds, big-hearted beats and playful energies when it comes to club music. No Big Deal, the duo's new album, doesn't disappoint on that front. It is an album that goes big on collars and features the likes of comedian and musician Reggie Watts, Grammy-nominated and multi-platinum-selling artist James Patterson peak-time producer VNSSA, another Grammy-nominee in the shape of vocalist Barney Bones and more besides. Plenty of weird and wacky beats are run through with some great lyrics to make this as functional as it is fun.

Review: After initially reserving much of his music for his own Tartan label, Wallace has been on plenty of fine sojourns to other top labels of late including CWPT's from Palms Trax, Studio Barnhus and Rhythm Section. Now he makes his biggest statement yet with a double album on Mule Musiq that draws on everything in his arsenal. His deft melodic touch and innocent synth work defines the first couple of clean and airy cuts while his knack for an unusual rhythm defines the loopy and hypnotic 'Midnight On The Mountain,' 'By The River' is a gorgeous deep house cut with eastern melodies and 'Bubbles' is pure dreaming material for zoned out sessions. A fine work from the talented Wallace.

Piss Fell Out Like Sunlight
Cat: OPAL 020. Rel: 18 Apr 13
Her Stomach In Terror
Pans Out In The Afterline
Review: The second vinyl issue from Opal Tapes presents the label's most singularly sounding release in its twenty plus discography, Piss Fell Out Like Sunlight from caps lock abusing Twitter user WANDA GROUP. This is the current alias of Brighton-based Louis Johnstone, a producer whose output for Astro:Dynamics, NNA Tapes, Vlek and Further has established him as one of the most intriguing voices in contemporary electronic music. Piss Fell Out Like Sunlight consists of two long form productions of gauzy weightless electronics that like some of Actress' work disregard any notion of forward momentum, instead focusing on short bursts of cryptic sonics that catch creative fire for 30 seconds before descending into the mists of time as Johnstone moves onto the next. Think of this as a swift mixtape through crunched, mulchy detritus.

Victory Over The Sun (Svreca remix) (6:36)
Eternal Dusk (Ettkeiz Kroff remix) (4:54)
Review: Wanderwelle & Bandhagens Musikforening's masterful Victory Over The Sun album gets skilfully reinterpreted by some of techno's most forward thinking protagonists. Amsterdam pair Wanderwelle themselves go first with a misty ambient take of 'An Unusual Sunrise' that sets a perfectly dramatic scene. Label boss Sverca serves up one of the highlights with his deep, pulsing hypnotic version of the title track and Anthony Linell sinks us way down below the ocean surface on his meditative dub roller. There is more energy to the busted beats and hidden vocal sounds of Celestial Crusade (E-Saggila remix) and plenty more greatness through the other tracks.

Review: Svreca's Semantica welcomes Wanderwelle and Bandhagens Musikforening for their first collaborative album, and it comes with some observations from Samuel Coccius written in 1566 about unusual sunsets and sunrises known as the "celestial phenomenon over Basel". They have clearly influenced the music here, with its crepuscular ambient techno with yawning pads, widescreen synths and a cinematic feel that pulls you right into the centre of it all. Rhythms come from supple and barely-there drums of "Red Skies", while "Before The Rain" does capture that feeling perfectly with heavenly chords and harmonies. Elsewhere there is darker but just as delicate techno in "Victory Over the Sun" and more besides.

Review: Yes! Nation affiliate Beau Wanzer comes through with a self released collection of archival cuts drawn from his personal vat of recordings made between 2002-08 and it's basically 12 examples of how to rule. For the most part, Wanzer draws from a similar palette to the recent Power Outage 10" for Traxx's Nation, delivering short and sharp experiments in mangled hardware and dizzying vocals that have a clear nod to early wave and primitive electronics but still retain that distinct Beau Wanzer charm. Wedged in amongst them are a few cuts the more fearless selectors out there will totally love, such as "I Don't Even Want To" and "23132", whilst the fuzzy kosmiche of closing track "Headspace" is a true palate cleanser.

Review: Active for several years in various musical forms, Beau Wanzer probably came to wider attention with that "Balls of Steel" cut on L.I.E.S. Clearly Ron Morelli was a positive influence on the Chicago artist, as 2014 saw Wanzer set up his own label to release music from his vast archive of mutant beatdowns. After one solo album and a fine collaborative long player with Corporate Park, we now have this second set of archival Wanzer recordings which dates back to 1999. It's an interesting mixture of moody, experimental electro, distant electronica, droning minimal wave movements, dystopian drum machine workouts, and pitched-down industrial techno, with the producer's own end-of-days vocals - heavily mutilated and tongue in cheek demonic - providing a constant thread.

First up is Carl Craig, who takes 'Ride Or Die' in predictably epic, soaring directions before Jon Dixon lays his ebullient, melodious touch over '(RE)volution'. Steve Rachmad whips up a tight and punchy strain of techno while re-versioning 'Second Wave', and Claude Young takes a delicate approach to 'Universal Language'. Stephen Brown creates a brooding, Detroit indebted mood on his mix of 'Immersion', John Beltran goes predictably far out with 'Second Wave' before Stephen Lopkin's own dreamy, sky-scraping take on the track. Shawn Rudiman completes this all-star cast with a supercharged, uplifting techno workout as he re-interprets 'Metamorphosis'. If you like classically-informed techno, you can't pass up this sterling package.

Review: Wave Arising is former Spiral Tribe man Sebastian Vaughan with vocalist Kynsie and they are a duo that likes to eplxore body, mind and soul "through intuitive listening of senses and inner energies by means of music , workshops and gatherings." This is their debut album and is an otherworldly mix of deep grooves and occult sonic landscapes. It has been made from various improvisations and avoids there use of sampling and as an album, this is one that feels very much alive. There are cinematic dub techno workouts, cascading synths and alien sound designs, menacing low ends and moments of majestic melodic beauty such as on 'Ronde Cinetique'. A brilliant debut.

Review: The masterful Sven Weisemann returns to the album format with Inner Motions, his second long player of a storied career as a producer of supple, genteel house music. It's released, naturally, on the Mojuba label whose sound has been defined by Weisemann and compatriot Nick Sole, and offers an extensive demonstration of the Berlin based producer's capacity to combine heart wrenching musicality with the crisp dynamism needed for club play. Arriving in some typically luxuriant packaging from Mojuba, Inner Motions is apparently "inspired by electronic music's classic and timeless albums of the early and mid 90s" and its 12 tracks form part of a greater whole. As intoxicating a listening experience it is, Weisemann has still ensured some of the music here can be equally powerful out of the collective context with "Rejection" and "Evolver" notable highlights.
