Marcel Dettmann - "Encode II" (7:00)
Efdemin - "Unten Links" (5:24)
Kobosil - "Saldae" (6:10)
Review: The second volume of Berlin institution Ostgut Ton's ten year anniversary release; and as said before; yes there'll indeed be ten of them... So get excited! This particular volume features Berghain resident and label mainstay Marcel Dettmann offering us "Encode II". Once again this is A grade techno by one of the modern greats; what more can we say! Regular guest at the club and Dial artist Efdemin serves up "Unten Links" a driving and adrenalised groove based around a nice arpeggio, rapid fire woodblocks and evil samples. New addition to the family Kobosil gives us "Saldae" a restrained yet furious stomper with doomy strings and sonar blips.

Marcel Fengler - "Fallin'" (feat Elif Bicer) (6:55)
Etapp Kyle - "Nolah" (6:18)
Steffi - "Ioweborschtel" (5:51)
Review: All good things come to an end. Part ten of ten in Ostgut Ton's tenth various artists' compilation and they've recruited some of their superstar residents to give their very best. Marcel Fengler's restrained fury on "Fallin' (feat. Elif Bicer)" almost sounds like something off the soundtrack of a sci-fi film where dramatic elements face off with Bicer's angelic voice. Etapp Kyle's "Nolah" is another example of his well executed hypnotic techno with a nod to the master himself Robert Hood. Finally Steffi's "Loweborschtel" is the kind of surefire sub-aquatic electro funk and the standard in quality you'd always expect from the Dolly boss.

Planetary Assault Systems - "Hama Static" (5:21)
Review: The Zehn 12" sampler series from cam Ostgut Ton reaches edition Sieben and features Martyn, Atom TM, Tobias and Planetary Assault Systems on the cut. It's the DC-based Dutchman that takes the A-side honours with "Jah Bedouin", a trademark hybrid cruncher from Martyn that pairs a UK rhythmic bent with tunnelling dub techno vibes and the occasional, yet wholly enthusiastic vocal sample that inspired the title. Face down Tobias and Atom TM experiment with a darker strain of sinewy techno on "Physik E7532" whilst Luke Slater is in banger mode for closing PSA cut "Hama Static".

Anthony Parasole - "Heartbeat" (5:19)
Review: The Ostgut Ton Zehn 12" series continues apace and lands on edition Sechs, which packs a triple trouble punch from Messrs Barker & Baumecker, Atom TM and Anthony MF Parasole! Responsible for one of our favourite Ostgut artist albums, Sam Barker and Andy Baumecker kick things off with their first original production in some time and the brittle, unpredictable hardcore manifestation "Love Is A Battlefield" has us hoping the pair will return with something more substantial soon. Ten minutes of ethereal techno at it's finest! On the flip, Atom TM takes it down a stripped back and dubby route with "Stromlinien" whilst The Corner don Parasole lays waste to the dancefloor with the reverberant elasticity of "Heartbeat".

Len Faki - "Rainbow Data" (ambient mix) (4:53)
Review:  Part nine of ten in Ostgut Ton's tenth various artists compilation and they're pulling out the big guns now to celebrate proceedings with a big bang. Star resident Ben Klock has taken quite a long hiatus from production but he's still got it, as shown on the tunnelling and cyclical cut "Sirens". Fellow resident and Detroit ex-pat Ryan Elliott serves up the soulful and emotive "Smith Lake" which is brilliant and reminds us of Exos or "Dead Eye" era Baby Ford. Finally resident party animal Len Faki surprises many with the ambient mix of his undisputed anthem "Rainbow Delta" and it is absolutely sublime; you can just drift away to this one, you'll see!

DVS1 - "(Ecks)" (6:10)
Answer Code Request - "Zeitspielraum" (5:36)
Doms & Deykers - "Whirling" (7:46)
Review: Ostgut Ton reach the midway, or Funf, point of their programme of 12" issues from last year's mammoth Zehn boxset which draws for the contributions from DVS1, Answer Code Request and the Dutch connection Doms & Deykers. DVS1 is up first with "Ecks", a blinding little DJ tool rife with skittering drums and trademark touches of psychedelia, whilst Answer Code Request's "Zeitspielraum" has a touch of the Underworld classic "Rez" to it. Plenty of broken drums too, naturally! Martyn and Steffi have the keys to the B-side and they use the space to lay down their own breakbeat house epic "Whirling" which bodes well for the mooted Doms & Deykers album that is supposed to be out this year.

S/D - "The Launderette" (4:55)
Norman Nodge - "Beastmode" (5:42)
Boris - "Lock" (10:03)
Review: The first volume of Berlin institution Ostgut Ton's ten year anniversary release; and yes there'll indeed be ten of them! First up on the A side is S/D aka Luke Slater and Marcel Dettmann, what a combo this is. "The Launderette" is definitely the most peculiar track we've heard by either but of course it's still impressive. A tripped out, quite tunnelling and reductionist track with mysterious male vocals beneath a collage of sinister samples and textures. Berghain resident Norman Nodge gives us "Beastmode" which is exactly the kind of menacing yet restrained, industrial edged track you'd hear him play during his infamous warm up sets. Finally one more of their residents, Boris Dolinksi, steps up to deliver a rare recording in the form of "Lock". A dusty minimal techno tool with some of the most haunting pads you'll hear this year, carrying the track. Something you'd probably hear him play near the end of one of his 8+ hour marathon closing sets.

Substance - "Keine Angst" (5:53)
Review: Last year Berlin institution Ostgut Ton marked their ten-year anniversary with an extensive 30 track compilation housed across the width of ten 12"s and packed neatly in a rather fancy looking box set. Long since sold out, Ostgut have done the right thing by commencing a series of individual 12" reissues featuring all of the music for the label fans who missed out first time around. After Eins and Zwei, we arrive at Zehn / Drei which features a triplet of modern techno productions from four of the label's closest associates. Up top Len Faki remixes the LB Dub Corp and Function collaboration "Roller", adding a subtle few notches of intensity to the original, whilst Dave Sumner goes alone on the lead B-side track "DX3_Analog_Bass_Seq". Lastly Substance aka DJ Pete offers up "Keine Angst," a fleet-footed tribal stomper and jacking vocal samples.

Tobias - "Like A Drug" (8:32)
Review: Acht! Ostgut's Zehn 12" sampler draws ever closer to the end of its campaign and its been a pleasure to see some of these records arrive at Juno HQ replete with distinctive sleeve art. The German speakers among you will know this is the eighth edition and brandishes productions from Din, Fiedel and Tobias. For the uninitiated, DIN is in fact Marcel Fengler and Efdemin with "Mono" a fine introduction to this fledgling creative partnership - hopefully more is coming on the mighty Ostgut Ton! "Probe-806" is a great slab of Fiedelness, pulling for elements of funk, electro, acid and even boogie in the German's inimitable muscular style whilst Tobias heads off in a more minimalist direction on "Like A Drug".

Review: Berlin's lady of ladies, Steffi, returns to familiar settings with this latest album, a deep and calculating blend of technoid sonics for the mighty Ostgut Ton imprint. The DJ-producer has been known to deliver absurdly twisted sets at the Berlin institution over the years, but the majority of her work has been made up of short collaborations and comparatively more dance-centric material. World Of The Waking State feels like a change of gear, where the focus on dance has been replaced by something much more imperceptible and inward looking. From "Different Entities" to "All Living Things, the opening three tunes point to a noticeable struggle behind the production desk, a deep sense of melancholia which enables these spectacular electronic gems from having cross-cultural appeal. The flip of the first disc further experiments with the deeper end of the sound palette, which is something that can be said about this entire LP. While this might get the Ostgut hype at first, the passage of time will undoubtedly get people to see it as a classic. What an album - very hotly recommended.

Cease To Exist
Review: Ostgut Ton has been trailing Steffi Doms' third album, World of the Waking State, as a departure for both artist and label. Certainly, it's an altogether more considered, complex and musically expansive set than its' predecessors. It's rich in evocative electronic soundscapes, whose scuttling rhythms look to IDM and vintage "intelligent techno" for inspiration. The assembled musical elements - think bubbly and occasionally wonky electronics, sweeping synthesized strings, deep space chords and Motor City melodies - often tend towards the heart-aching and melodious, lending the set a genuinely poignant feel. When Doms decides to change tack and head towards the dancefloor - see the ghostly, industrial electro assault of "Mental Events", sparkling positivity of "Cease To Exist" and bustling, intergalactic title track - the results are equally as inspired.

Review: While Steffi and Virginia have been working together on and off for the best part of a decade, "Work A Change" is undoubtedly their most significant collaborative work to date (both in terms of its expansive nature and the quality of music on show). With Virginia handling singing duties throughout, "Work A Change" rides on waves of tasty electro grooves and hazy synth-pop motifs and futuristic electronics. It's a blueprint that guarantees goodness throughout, from the quietly euphoric shuffle of opener "Be True To Me" and the pulsating dancefloor fizz of "Help Me Understand" (one of two cuts showcased in both vocal and instrumental forms), to the high-tempo thrust of "Until You're Begging", the bass-heavy, future dancehall wonkiness of "Internal Bleeding" and triumphantly intergalactic title track.

Review: Well, it wouldn't be a complete season without something from Berlin's Nick Hoppner, and luckily it's come through his city's limitless Ostgut Ton imprint. However, this is a total refresh from the producer, a summer look, if you will! Unlike the tech-minded house we've come to associate him to, the Work LP is a much more investigative piece of music, reaching far beyond the confines of the dance space. Moreover, it's feels like a single piece of music rather than a collection of tunes passed off as an album. There are, of course, plenty of usable tools in here, but the tracks sound complete and accomplished on their own, making this a winner throughout. House and electronica get mashed up good and proper, all while retaining Hoppner's trademark Berlin style. BIG.

Review: While Nick Hoppner's 2015 debut album, Folk, was rather impressive, it would be fair to say that this follow-up is even better. While that set was largely rooted in hazy and evocative deep house and melodic techno, Work sees the Panoramabar resident drawing from a far deeper pool of influences. So, he begins with a superb chunk of melodious IDM ("All By Themselves (My Belle)") and the throbbing, warehouse-friendly jauntiness of "Clean Living" before dropping the album's first tech-tinged house roller ("In My Mind"). The pattern continues throughout, as he variously turns his hand to future garage (the jazzy "Hole Head"), watery dub techno ("The Dark Segment"), sumptuous late '80s dream house ("Fly Your Colours") and superb electronic/acoustic fusion (clarinet-sporting closer, "Three is a Charm").

Review: Berghain young gun Max Kobosil gives us his debut album. We Grow They Decline is surprisingly more restrained than you'd expect from Kobosil given his reputation as a DJ and of course those pretty fierce EPs he released previously on MDR and Unterton. Most tracks on here are slower, deeper and reflective takes on the techno sound and show a sense of maturity in this emerging talent's studio prowess. Highlights include the sombre and vertigo inducing slow-groove of "Reflection", the avant garde tribalism of "The Exploring Mountain" and the throbbing EBM crossover of "The Living Ritual".

Review: Over the last three years, fresh-faced Berghain resident Kobosil has steadily built his reputation via releases on Marcel Dettmann Records, his own RK imprint, and most latterly Ostgut Ton. Here, he finally gets a chance to fully detail his widescreen approach to techno on a much-anticipated debut album. While rooted in the kind of clandestine, early morning fare that always goes down a storm in Berlin, the eleven tracks that make up We Grow, You Decline are peppered with a veritable smorgasbord of intriguing influences, from the dark, panicky ambience of "Eihwaz" and grandiose drone textures of "While The Stars Be Not Darkened", to the industrial/EBM pulse of "The Living Ritual", and the soundtrack jazz-goes-techno atmospherics of "To See Land".

Review: Martyn's last physical album came out all the way back in 2014, when the term 'post' had still yet to gain notoriety and a meaningful relevance to the music industry. It is now 2018, and it's clear that Martyn, the Dutch bass legend, has a new story to tell, and it's thanks to Ostgut Ton that he's able to tell it. Voids is a magnificently deep and treacherous LP, often relying on abstract shapes to give the techno its edge, much like on "Voids One" and the following "Manchester". Aside from the beatless thrills, though, Martyn drops an impressive amount of hybrid burners, such as "Mind Rain" or "Why" - both representative of the blending of sounds that has taken electronic music by the scruff of the neck. It's a more pensive, more exploratory Martyn, and we love it.

Review: Ostgut Ton ain't just house, techno and concrete, they're ambient, experimental, electro and musique concrete. This is the biggest compilation the label has released since they let Emika run wild in a closed Berghain and Panorama Bar to capture sounds of the humming club for 2010's Funf compilation. Barker & Baumecker and Fiedel saw releases on that compilation and now they contribute a track each to Ostgut Ton's abstract Various LP. B&B offer up some dubby frenetics in "Meiose" while Fiedel supplies some melodica and two step rhythms in "Grunewald2". Tobias' "Dark & Troubling Things" share a similar beatless murk to music from Canadian ambient artist Loscil, while Rolando's track "Neglected" is a stand out. DIN adds some minimally-charged Chicago house to the LP, while Virginia and new name Crushed Soul opt for something more electro. Dave Sumner then seals Various with a primitive "Golden Dawn" featuring Stefanie Parnow for something totally different to what Function fans are accustomed to.

Here he returns to the much-loved German imprint with his most significant solo release to date: a debut album of drowsy, sun-baked electronic positivity that expertly melds elements of hazy ambient, dub techno, off-kilter electronica and the classic kosmiche synthesizer soundscapes associated with Tangerine Dream. It's a lot less dancefloor-focused than much of his previous material, but that's not a criticism: indeed, the fact that it's warm, opaque and prioritizes fuzzy, slowly shifting musical movements is the album's greatest strength.

Review: Berghain regulars Sam Barker and Andy Baumecker impressed with their 2012 debut album, Transsektoral, but have been noticeably quiet since then. While that album gleefully fused stripped-back Teutonic techno with elements of UK bass music, Turns is an altogether more cerebral affair. It begins with a pair of becalmed, mood enhancing ambient cuts, before stepping towards the dancefloor via the undulating, analogue techno pulse of "Club Entropicana". It's a pattern that continues throughout the album, with spaced-out, experimental interludes making way for more percussive, modular-driven club fare. Highlights include the dub techno warmth of "Nocturnal", and creepy closer "Statik".

Review: Since 2010, Germany's Barker & Baumecker have been a solid, reassuring presence in the Ostgut Ton roster; the two producers invariably deliver the goods, whether it's militant techno or more mischievous strains of broken bass music. Their last LP, 2012's Transsektoral, was an ice-cold techno excursion, but this time they seem to be in a more expansive state of mind with this new album, Turns, a voyage across desolate ambient plains and symphonic dance floor experiments. The two openers, "Senden" and "Encipher" are the perfect entrance to an eerie world of molecular sonics, a sound which evolves further into the more beat-laden "Decipher", and the mechanical beats of "Club Entropicana". "Technogate" is a beatless blend of field recordings and echoing harmonies, while "Turnhalle" bounces away at a more uplifting tempo, "Nocturnal" chucks some breaks into the techno mix, and "Statik" ties things off with a sleek, polished 4/4 finish that is testament to the variety of styles that these two are capable of delivering.

Nearly Africa Dub
I Have A Dream (feat Benjamin Zephaniah)
Review: Luke Slater's ever-vital LB Dub Corp alias makes a welcome return to Ostgut-Ton with its blend of catchier house dynamics and flamboyant motifs ahead of a soon to drop LP. In the case of "Turner's House" it's the catchiness of the lead synth that grabs you straight away, hopping as it does around a peppy scale as the drums playfully jack between different patterns. "Nearly Africa Dub" is a more subtle affair, reducing the rhythmic sparks down to a linear thrum and feeding the bass line in and out like a particularly teasing bait for the track. Finishing with the most daring track of the lot, "I Have A Dream" gives a vast cushion of organ swells and dubbed out broken techno to Benjamin Zephaniah to pontificate on modern culture in a wry and dry tone.

Treasure Seeking (Diep version)
Review: Away from her more austere techno output, Steffi can known to be a big lover of unabashed party-time electro, and it doesn't get more exuberant and catchy than this collaboration with Dexter and Virginia in a departure from most of the output you'll find on Ostgut-Ton. "Treasure Seeking" is a craftily penned crossover cut with as much pop nous as underground clout, with Dexter's squelchy sound-design looming over the mix. The 130 BPM version gets a little more of that Detroit electro style looming over proceedings, while Diep delivers a straight-talking Motor City techno version loaded with plush string synths and stacks of energy.

Review: Having previously made a splash with their "Candyflip" and "A Murder of Crows" singles, vest-wearing techno separatists Sam Barker and Andy Baumecker step forth with their debut full-length. It's a typically Teutonic kind of set, mixing crackly moments of murky dancefloor techno ("Silo", "Buttcracker") with downbeat electronica ("Tranq"), garage-techno fusion (see the excellent "No Body"), dub techno ("Databass 133 1/3") and occasional forays into subdued but anthemic upbeat territory. It's these that really hit the spot, with the Detroitian hypnotism of "Trans It" and breathlessly beautiful "Spur" standing out.

Review: The debut album from Barker & Baumecker has been a long time in the making, but its timing couldn't be better. With techno at a point of divergence, as producers like Untold and Blawan make the move from the UK end of the bass spectrum into straighter 4/4 fare, Transsektoral seems to offer a Berlin perspective on the same theme. Although the stark, often dramatic atmosphere is that of an Ostgut Ton record through and through, the whole thing is peppered with broken rhythms and lurching bass (see "Crows"), and even some inventive R&B sampling reminiscent of the Tri Angle family. Of course it also makes its concessions to the Berghain purists with the spluttering, acid toothed techno of "Trafo" and "Silo", or the relentless "Buttcracker" but all things considered, this is one of the most vital albums Ostgut Ton have released since The Traveller - which is high praise indeed.

Review: French techno legend Terence Fixmer returns with another killer EP for Ostgut Ton since 2017's Force EP. The Planete Rouge head honcho follows up releases on aufnahme + wiedergabe, Novamute and Jealous God - so you know what to expect from the man here: bold, industrial techno loaded stright off the factory floor. From the grinding and textural hypnotism of "Shout In A Black Hole", the Millsian sci-fi aesthetics of "Fury" or the classic industrial noir of "Accelerate" to the slow burning EBM sleaze of "Expedition" - Fixmer displays yet again that he's competently consistent at whatever style he chooses throughout this riveting extended EP.

Review: One of Ostgut Ton's most interesting characters, Shed returns with his second album The Traveller. Our impression is that Shed had lots of fun making this album - his love for everything from UK hardcore and jungle to techno and dubstep seeps through the tracks and resonates with the listener. "M R Class" for example is proper Berghain tackle - a seriously thumping dub techno bomb. Elsewhere "Final Experiment" sounds like Shed has been listening to Werk Discs chief Actress, all bleeps and sonic squiggles submerged deep beneath layers of compression, while "Hello Bleep" has a cheeky "Spastik"-esque drum roll. Much like his debut opus Shedding The Past, this album successfully flows as a continuous body of music, despite (or perhaps because of) the sketch like quality of many of the songs. Undoubtedly one of the most important albums of 2010.

Breakdown
Review: The Happenstance sees Ostgut Ton finally allowing Norman Nodge centre stage and the Berghain resident does not disappoint, dropping three expert explorations into the lower reaches of acid coated machine funk that match the brilliance of his recent MDR twelve. The title track hogs the A Side with spacious aplomb, expansive acid gurgles dominating the rasping spinal 808 rhythms and rattling textures, whilst haunting screams of tension soundtrack the background. "Body To Body" finds Berghain's solicitor in more rumbling insistent form, with menacing acid rises attempting to suffocate the dusted jack, with a relentless "ptt-chh" adding some rhythmic oddness. Nodge closes with "Breakdown" - an all too brief exercise in stretching out rubbery acid lines to near snapping point.

Review: On his first solo album in five long years, Berlin techno heavyweight Marcel Dettmann is in scintillating form. The six tracks that make up "Test File" are in some ways typical of his output, in other ways surprisingly atypical. Compare and contrast, for example, the title track's buzzing, mind-altering, percussively dense Berghain techno intensity, and the deliciously low-slung, atmospheric and dubby "Torch", where Dettmann dips the tempo and looks towards post-dubstep rhythms, post-punk and gnarled electronica for inspiration. Or, for that matter, the smooth and atmospheric dub techno hypnotism of "Error (1st Take)", the head-nodding dark-room house haziness of "Autumn 77" and the blistering peak-time techno assault of "Ascending". All hit the mark impressively and bear the hallmarks of Dettmann's signature style, even of their aims are impressively varied.

Review: It never used to be so, but these days solo releases from Ben Klock are few and far between. We've seen periodic collaborations from the Berghain resident - most notably with old pal Marcel Dettmann - but little else, making this first solo single in nine years a genuine "event" release. He's in fine form on A-side "Subzero", a hushed, deep and intoxicating techno workout that delivers nine minutes of locked-in drums, hazy aural textures, simmering chords and icy, undulating lead lines. Flipside "Coney Island", an evocative and atmospheric affair that moves from dusty field recordings (presumably of the famous New York resort mentioned in the title) to forthright, funfair-aping techno headiness via a drawn-out ambient intro, synthesized horror strings and bubbly acid bass.
