Cat: DOLLY 14. Rel: 15 May 13
Techno
  1. Dexter - "Jawada"
  2. Third Side - "Under Arrest"
  3. John Barera & Will Martin - "Reality"
  4. Steffi - "DB011"
Review: Speaking at length for Resident Advisor's Exchange series of podcasts recently, Panorama Bar resident and Dolly label head Steffi was in typically straight talking mood and her apparent lack of interest in engaging in the promotional game for releases on Dolly speaks volumes as to how she approaches the label; it's an outlet for her to release the music from artists she likes with the minimum of fanfare. Of course it helps to sell records when Dolly releases are of a consistently high standard, as this Various Artists 12" resolutely is with 3 cuts from her Panorama Bar mix CD present and correct! Despite the illustrious presence of Klakson co-founder Dexter, Third Side and Steffi, it's the playful classicist US deep house of "Reality" from John Barera and Will Martin that truly stands out!

Techno
  1. ROD - "Duchi Kaal" (4:49)
  2. Steffi - "IE-4" (5:45)
  3. Mark Broom - "Drum Jamz 2" (5:35)
  4. Strain - "Theory" (6:09)
Review: Following up from an impressive first edition, DVS1's imprint Mistress is devoted to secret weapons of the house and techno variety - plus all sounds in between. Much like the previous edition, it has its sights set on surefire techno tools for the main room. Rotterdam's Benny Rodrigues impresses as always, but with something different than what we're used to on the stripped back dub techno aesthetic of "Duchi Kaal". Fellow Berghain/Panorama Bar resident Steffi hands in a stellar effort on the loopy, trance inducing sorcery of "IE-4" and the legendary Mark Broom (of Pure Plastic and Rue East fame) has got the right credentials to do old-school - and he sure ticks all the right boxes on the classic Chi-town jack of "Drum Jamz 2".

  2. JBW25 (Further Reductions version) (6:26)
  3. JBW25 (Answer Code Request vision) (7:13)
  4. JBW25 (Answer Code Request revision) (5:08)
Review: Last year's Steffi album, Power of Anonymity, the subject of attention on this latest Ostgut Ton 12" as the Berlin label seek out two distinct acts to rework one of the long player's highlights. Named after a street Steffi Doms used to live on, "JBW25" is included here in original form for anyone that missed the aforementioned album and also offers first hand comparison to the remixes from Further Reductions and Answer Code Request. It's nice to see Brooklyn-based duo Katie Rose and Shawn O'Sullivan turn in their debut remix with a creeping, stripped down take on the track that bristles with the same sense of foreboding as their Cititrax LP of last year. Answer Code Request offers two versions which will appeal to the straighter techno heads out there.

  9. Bounces Of Nature (6:15)
  10. Cease To Exist (6:13)
Review: Berlin's lady of ladies, Steffi, returns to familiar settings with this latest album, a deep and calculating blend of technoid sonics for the mighty Ostgut Ton imprint. The DJ-producer has been known to deliver absurdly twisted sets at the Berlin institution over the years, but the majority of her work has been made up of short collaborations and comparatively more dance-centric material. World Of The Waking State feels like a change of gear, where the focus on dance has been replaced by something much more imperceptible and inward looking. From "Different Entities" to "All Living Things, the opening three tunes point to a noticeable struggle behind the production desk, a deep sense of melancholia which enables these spectacular electronic gems from having cross-cultural appeal. The flip of the first disc further experiments with the deeper end of the sound palette, which is something that can be said about this entire LP. While this might get the Ostgut hype at first, the passage of time will undoubtedly get people to see it as a classic. What an album - very hotly recommended.

Review: Ostgut Ton has been trailing Steffi Doms' third album, World of the Waking State, as a departure for both artist and label. Certainly, it's an altogether more considered, complex and musically expansive set than its' predecessors. It's rich in evocative electronic soundscapes, whose scuttling rhythms look to IDM and vintage "intelligent techno" for inspiration. The assembled musical elements - think bubbly and occasionally wonky electronics, sweeping synthesized strings, deep space chords and Motor City melodies - often tend towards the heart-aching and melodious, lending the set a genuinely poignant feel. When Doms decides to change tack and head towards the dancefloor - see the ghostly, industrial electro assault of "Mental Events", sparkling positivity of "Cease To Exist" and bustling, intergalactic title track - the results are equally as inspired.

  15. Privacy - "Broke"
Review: Given that there have been 93 previous editions of Fabric's long-running mix series, you'd think DJs would struggle to find a new angle. Steffi, though, has had no such problems. The Berlin-based Dutchwoman has flipped the script by commissioning all 16 tracks especially for the mix. It's a neat trick and works well, with the result being a typically impressively put-together stroll through a myriad of techno, house, IDM and electro-related sounds. There are two exclusive Steffi collaborations (one with Martyn as Doms and Deykers, the other with Shed), alongside seriously good cuts from pals Dexter (solo and alongside Virginia), Late Night Approach, Answer Code Request, Privacy and UAS.
