Review: In fitting fashion for Sault, we've another surprise LP on our hands from the Inflo and Cleo Sol led collective. Sault's revolving door format is heard again in full saloon swing, doubling down on their knockout combo of elusiveness (every track title is an initialism) and creative spontaneity. Coming after a prolific but unconventional run - 2022 offered five albums made freely available for only five days - 10 indicates a return to a tighter focus, not abandoning the phonic plexuses and political undertones that have defined their work so far. Best on the record is the nymphlike, god fearing gospel jam 'L.U.' and the sculpted G-P-funk of 'K.T.Y.W.S.'

Review: Mushi 45 prompt a history lesson: Hailing from Paris in the early 70s, Lafayette Afro Rock Band forged a fusion of American funk and West African rhythms, producing grooves that stuck like thumbtacks through later genera such as hip-hop and electronica. Their track 'Darkest Light' stands out for its piercing, mussitating bari sax riff, famously looped on Jay-Z's 'Show Me What You Got'. Review: In 1979, the Washington-based Janice Lakers Quintet recorded this fetching demo, beloved for its formal attending to the joy of making music together. With Lakers on vocals, Dick Cady on piano, Mike Edwards on woodwinds, Larry Turner on bass and Fred Taylor on drums, the group delivered two unique covers, each worked into their own signature style. Their take on Seawind's 'He Loves You' strips back the funk, replacing it with a light, effortless glide. Taylor's whisking drums and Turner's steady bassline lay an airy foundation, while Edwards' clarinet and Cady's piano inject bursts of energy mid-song. On the flip, 'Shaker Song' bridges Spyro Gyra's instrumental and Manhattan Transfer's later vocal version; richer in texture, it offered Lakers a chance to explore her vocal range, closing with lively scatting.

Review: Durand Jones, Aaron Frazer and Blake Rhein return with Flowers, their fourth album, revisiting the same raw, budding energy that first plotted them together in a Bloomington basement. Embracing a back-to-basics approach, and echoing the collaborative spirit of their 2016 debut, this self-produced LP took shape at Rhein's Chicago home studio, with many tunes edified from one-take demos, capturing a no-frills but beautifully petaled synergy between the trio. Flowers' 11 phases lean into a refined, yet playful blend of soul-disco, exuding a smooth, homegrown, sexologic vibe, like an aphrodisiac planter hung from the dashboard as we embark on a late night drive. "All of these songs touch on such mature topics, things that we never got to sing about before," says Jones. A right blossoming indeed.

Review: Freestyle deliver a curate collection of overlooked UK street soul and boogie from the 80s and early 90s, with standout tracks from the label's recent 12" reissue programme. The collection houses a special mid-90s gem from Manchester's Gold In The Shade, with accompanying photos by Andrew Holligan and liners from Kevin Le Gendre. The sleeve was shot in Hackney, East London, where a vibrant street culture flourished despite the strictures of the Thatcher era. British music evolved at the same time, as larger ensembles shrank in favour of smaller groups with synths, letting boogie's smooth, bass-led sound find life. This transition, alongside the rise of street soul, budded and blossomed a uniquer blend of indie and studio projects, imprinting lastingly on the culture, now repackaged and again represented in The Way U Make Me Feel.

Review: Mystery-heavy UK leftfield soul outfit Sault's 12th album feels like a deeply personal offering wrapped in some of the most radiant production of their career. With Inflo behind the boards, the album moves fluidly between soulful reflection and uplifting groove. Opener 'The Healing' speaks to emotional growth, inner peace and shared vulnerability. The message is clear: healing is a journey best taken together. Tracks like 'Power' and 'Know That You Will Survive' are driven by rich, pulsing basslines and lush instrumentation. They groove with purpose, rooted in funk and soul while sounding unmistakably present-day. Cleo's voice carries a calm authority, especially on 'Know That You Will Survive'. a song that delivers hard truths with grace and warmth. 'Look Up' springs to life with Pino Palladino's bass anchoring the song's ghostly harmonies. Tracks such as 'Higher Than the Rain' and 'Real Love' layer gently but build with quiet force. The subtlety makes them all the more gripping. But 'Sorry It's Too Late' lingers the longest. A simple piano line and Cleo's bare, aching voice create a stillness that's hard to shake. Review: Loveland, Ohio's Colemine label offer a 7" indie exclusive on this furtive freshener from house engineer and regularly featured artist Leroi Conroy, returning after his last 45 in 2017 with a sharp double-sider flaunting his rhythmatic flair and deeper verbal intuitions. 'No Return' outlays crisp boom-bap drums wrapped in fluttering flute lines from Michael Sarason (of Say She She) and shimmering harp hallelujahs, courtesy of Cincinnati handywoman Rachel Miller. There's a distinct nod to Dorothy Ashby's work here, but reimagined for a 2025 palette; the flip leads the way to the 'Path Of Man', stripping the bark back to murkier moods, pulling from the darker corners of Conroy's upcoming full-length. He's come a long way since vacationing from the cutting lathe, representing himself in a new soulful and cinematic light, one which is yet raw and unpolished where it counts.

Addressing civil rights, urban life, and Black identity with rare grace, it's little wonder that his catalogue has since proved a goldmine for reinterpretation, where 'Move On Up', 'The Makings of You' and 'People Get Ready' continue to inspire covers over generations. Here, howsoever the decision was made, do Soul Shepherds reshake a less-known Mayfield favourite in dub, 'Give Me Your Love', a dark-horse ode to good lovin', originally track 6 on the soul star's great soundtrack to the pimpin' 70s film Superfly. Together, they knit a golden thread between Rio and Los Angeles, and 70s MPB and soul, recording straight to tape at Younge's all-analogue Linear Labs. Schmutz, known in Brazil as an actress, takes the opportunity to derobe a more personal, devotional side, channeling her childhood memories of singing to her father's records. Younge, whose past work includes sessions with Marcos Valle, Joao Donato and Joyce, then shapes the arrangements into curious, lullabying lush segmentations of hypno-samba, be these 'Nossa Cor' and 'Feitico', pulling towards bossa and Afro-Brazilian rhythms, or 'More Than Love', echoing Studio 54's cinematic disco.

Review: Davon Bryant-Mason aka Dreamcastmoe finally makes his vinyl debut on Rhythm Section, years after the label first encountered him and his genre-smudging sound. Though it's the first official release between the artist and the Peckham imprint, their connection runs deep, stretching all the way back to a string of early underground pool hall sets at the now nonexistent Canavan's in South London. Review: Durand Jones & The Indications, a soulful trio hailing from Bloomington, Indiana, have quietly honed their craft over the last decade. What began in the basement of Indiana University in 2012 has evolved into a global phenomenon, with Durand Jones (vocals), Aaron Frazer (drums/vocals) and Blake Rhein (guitar) leading the charge. Review: Bronx MC Rob-O returns with his first official solo release, more than two decades after his work with 90s underground crew INI. 'Rocket Science' is a tight, mid-tempo track produced by Paris-based Lex (de Kalhex), who also handled their 2012 collaboration. The beat is minimal but deliberate i a dusty loop with light keys and clean drums that hold space without distraction. Rob-O's vocal version plays it straight: a dense verse structure, clipped delivery and clear nods to Rakim-era cadences. The instrumental on the flip mirrors the vocal arrangement exactly, offering DJs and heads a clean alternate take. Nothing here feels overplayed. The mix by Parental is crisp, with the mastering by K-Def preserving warmth without softening the edges. This is a concise reintroduction to a voice with deep roots in New York's underground lineage.
