Review: Neapolitan funk maestro Mystic Jungle returns with a new LP less than a year after the dreamy Words of Love with more astrally-charged electro/boogie/disco type wonderment. Dario di Pace's third full-length has been quietly brewing for years, shaped by studio shutdowns and shifts in location i and that patchwork journey adds a certain character to the gorgeously technicolour music on show. It's perhaps his most eclectic and free-flowing release yet: a bright, hazy blend of styles that feels both loose and deeply considered. On the dancefloor end, tracks like 'Secrets' and 'Some Lovin'' burst with disco grooves, searing guitars, call-and-response vocals and sultry sax lines. Elsewhere, 'Innervision' and 'Twilight' lean into lovers rock and wavy neon-dub pop, full of yearning, shimmer and otherworldly flourishes. Then there's the stoner sway of 'The Road' and 'Get Me Higher' i sun-soaked, psychedelic jams with zoned-out soul at their core. A richly immersive Amalfi joyride from start to finish, the Periodica fire just keeps on burning.

All instrumental, it marks a shift from prior album An Insatiable High (1977), which brought a relatively aerobic seven-track feel; Brazilian Skies is the trans-Indian holiday after the marathon, bringing lilting beachside hums and coconut claves to a multi-instrumental funk bonanza.

Review: Inspired by his neon-lit walks around London's docklands, crate digger Ilan Pdahtzur's 2019 compilation Night City Life marked him out as a dusty-fingered crate digger and record collector with a distinctive, synth-heavy musical vision. It made him the toast of the selector/collector community, but more than that it was a genuinely superb selection of obscure, hard-to-find cuts. This belated sequel is every bit as essential and filled, unsurprisingly, with rare and lesser-known gems. Highlights are too plentiful to mention, but our current favourites include Sharon & Tracey's 'The Sheik' (a belly-dancing inspired slab of TB-303 bass-driven house hedonism), Jennifer's 1992 Euro-house gem 'Come Into My Life', Scicilian musician Claudio D'Ignoti's boogie-era treat 'Ache Per Noir', and the fashion scene inspired leftfield synth-pop of Lena's 'Embrasse-Moi (Strumentale)'.

Review: Detroit dub techno don Luke Hess says that this is his "most eclectic and techno-driven album to date" and that it blends together his signature subterranean sounds with his indelible Motor City touch. It again works well on cultured dance floors but is also a deeply spiritual album that will have your mind wandering to some lovely places. From the opening moments of 'Dokimion' you're sunk into widescreen soundscapes that pair painterly synths with immersive low ends. Cuts like 'Stoicheo' bring serene melodies and closer 'Hiketeria' is a misty, foggy cut that oozes late-night intimacy.

Review: 70s and early 80s Jamaican producer Keith Hudson's approach to dub was never about smooth edges or easy rhythms. His productions are dense, disorienting, heavy with delay, bass and drums that sound like they're ricocheting down a well. The Soul Syndicate, his long-time studio band, provide the backbone hereideeply locked-in grooves that Hudson warps into something ghostly. 'No Commitment' staggers forward with stabbing guitar chops that seem to dissolve mid-strike, while 'Ire Ire' loops through warped vocal fragments and echo chambers that stretch into infinity. 'Bad Things' and its dub counterpart pull apart the rhythm until it feels skeletal, each hit landing in the empty space between delay trails. Hudson's use of reverb and tape manipulation isn't just about atmosphere, but about control as well. He shifts and reshapes the mix to turn steady rhythms into something unsteady, always shifting just out of reach. 'Desiree' drifts through flickering hi-hats and cavernous low-end, while 'Keeping Us Together' seems to slow down and speed up in the same breath. There's something darker, more claustrophobic in the way he structures space and silence. Even the brighter moments, like 'Mercy' with its open, rolling groove, carry an unease, as if the music itself is bracing for collapse. Hudson was an architect of mood, twisting familiar elements into something deeply immersive and strangely hypnotic.

Review: Reissued in 2025, Flight Of The Conchords' debut 2008 LP compiled and studio-ized the very best of the New Zealand comedy duo's musical numbers, which had hitherto only appeared on TV and in concert. Billed as a final foil to "all the inexpert fan-made audio transfers which have bloated hard drives the world over" in the words of Sub Pop, Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clements' parodic folk efforts here are commendable. Trademark acoustic guitars and diverse instrumentation underlie this jocose dose, while the sheerly most relevant of all contemporary foibles and current affairs - the Pet Shop Boys, censorship, Marvin Gaye, sexism, Shabba Ranks, and backhanded compliments - is handled with smooth irreverence.

Review: A pillar of 70s jazz-funk and soul, this landmark release from Los Angeles artist Roy Ayers still sounds impossibly fresh. Originally released in 1976, it marked a shift towards more mellow, groove-based songwritinga and remains one of the most influential entries in Ayers' vast discography. He centres the vibraphone across ten tracks, using it as both melodic guide and percussive spirit. 'Hey, Uh-What You Say Come On' sets out the blueprint with radiant optimism, followed by the smoky bounce of 'The Golden Rod' and 'Keep On Walking'. 'You And Me My Love' and 'The Third Eye' stretch into dreamier territory, while 'It Ain't Your Sign (It's Your Mind)' and 'People And The World' inject a sharper social commentary. 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' itself is a peak momentihazy, minimal, instantly transportive. Review: Kendrick Lamar aka. K Dot is hip-hop's all-time crown-bearer for the 2010s. Last time we checked, the same was true for the 2020s too. Bridging both decades came To Pimp A Butterfly, which saw mammoth success upon its 2015 release. Though perhaps prematurely slapped with the "classic" label all too soon (and though this wasn't wrong), one good index of an all-time great album is the prevalence of affectionate initialisms among diehard fans: in no time at all, it became known as "TPAB". The Compton rapper had had a firm social conscience ever since the release of Section 80 and Good Kid, Mad City, and TPAB would continue to restitute the many racial and consumeristic ills of American society; unforgettably, a White House mutiny is depicted on the original front cover. Songs like 'I', 'Sing For Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst', 'King Kunta' and 'Institutionalized' revolutionised rap through every motif from G-funk bounce to freeform jazz. Now, after a recent Super Bowl Halftime Show backed by vexingly ironic American flags and pyrotechnics, we hear a newly emerged butterfly: Kendrick's meliorative flows and butterfly-effect cogitations resound with the utmost clarity on this grey UMR edition.

Review: It might be Pulp's first new album since We Love Life in 2001, but Jarvis Cocker has kept busy in that time, not least with his impeccable Jarv Is... project. Keeping himself match fit musically has evidently played into Pulp's hands because they sound inspired, at the top of their game and bound to consolidate their reputation one of the UK's most loved bands. Recorded with producer James Ford at Studio Orbb in North East London, they laid down eleven tracks in three weeks for this album and the lead single, 'Spike Island', is an enrapturing synth-led indie pop cut that whets the palate nicely for the other ten. The album is also their first since the passing of bassist Steve Mackay, who died in 2023. It is dedicated to his memory.

Review: It has been a full half a century since legendary Brazilian outfit Azymuth made their debut and their new album, Marca Passo, reaffirms their place as legends of jazz-funk. It was recorded in Rio and produced by Daniel Maunick and is the group’s first album since drummer Ivan “Mamão” Conti’s passing, with bassist Alex Malheiros now the sole founding member. He's joined by Kiko Continentino and new drummer Renato Massa to continue Azymuth’s tradition of blending samba soul, funk and cosmic jazz. Review: Ludvig Cimbrelius, a multi-alias artist donning other guises Alveol, Eternell, and Rust, reserves the Purl name for his more ambient, dubby techno creations. After a goosebump-inducing debut on the British Columbia-based Silent Season label in 2010 with Deep Ground, Stillpoint marked his first release with them in five years, following a series of records on Dewtone and Post Global. Now again reissued on vinyl ten years later, Stillpoint inflects balmy dub soundscapes and dewey techno sweats, evoking tearful rain shadows and humid canopies.
