Review: Bang on trend grooves from the Vivid camp, exploring the current fascination for all things that intersect both the garage and breaks genres. Lead track 'Wicked & Wild' is the one that leans furthest into UKG territory, its bumpy bassline and MC-style vocal giving it heaps of energy and attitude. Flip side instrumentals 'Push Past It' and 'Ronin' meanwhile, evoke the early 2000s spirit of breaksteppers such as Horsepower Productions, the latter especially maintaining the bassline pressure and adding it to the more hardcore vibe of rawer, sampled percussion. Review: Whether or not Lennie D'Ice's 'We Are I.E' was the tune that inspired the birth of jungle has long been a matter of debate. Regardless, it was certainly highly influential - a booming, sub-heavy breakbeat hardcore anthem that undoubtedly shifted the musical dial on its initial release in 1991. Here the freshly remastered original - sounding weightier and sharper than ever - is joined by a trio of 21st century interpretations. Solo and Blade kick things off with a crisply chopped and pleasingly rolling re-edit before Horsepower Productions brilliantly re-imagine it as a punchy and powerful breakstep smasher. Arguably best of all though is the take from Bristol's Borai, who brilliantly joins the dots between bassline, 4/4 UKG and saucer-eyed turn-of-the-90s house. Let me hear you scream!

Review: Self-proclaimed "queer Antifa" operative Neu Verboten has a hard-to-pigeonhole style all of his own, where filthy techno bass and raw rave stabs rub shoulders with intense EBM electronics, clanking industrial sounds and heavy, pitch-black techno beats. It's a hugely enjoyable sound all told and one he successfully showcases on the 18th volume in Libertine Records' Traditions series. Our picks of a very strong bunch include the heart-racing intensity of electro-EBM fusion number 'It Doesn't Have To Be This Way', the sub-heavy electro-bleep shuffle of 'If They Arrive (Part 1)' and the brain-melting, body-popping madness of 'Global Warming'.

Review: Trackmaster Dre might seem like a new name to some but if you've been following the boomptier / hard-jacking side of Chicago house then you'll already know him from his Tripmastaz project. This project allows the Russian artist to do what the hell he likes, however, as he digs deep across his influences and draws for some excellent samples and textures. The range is felt here instantly from the Derrick Carter-style bashes of 'DoDo' to the Kruder & Dorfmeister flavoured 'Dowsie'. Elsewhere we're treated to lo-fi D&B ('Imperfections'), grizzled but uplifiting techno ('Outerstellar') and butt-shifting ghetto business ('Run Red IV'). Track these down!

Review: Dawl's music is nostalgic by design, with the producer frequently serving up singles, EPs and mini-albums that mine his love of turn-of-the-90s bleep & bass, body-popping electro, acid and breakbeat hardcore. On his latest Tone Dropout four tracker, he continues in this vein, with predictably entertaining results. He first peppers a TR-808 driven electro groove with gnarled synth syabs and intergalactic electronics on 'Total Annihilation', before opting for a more breathless, action packed and squelch-sporting electro flex on 'Infiltrator'. Over on side B, 'Kaotic' is a punchy acid-electro number with bonus bleeps, while 'Interception' pairs shuffling B-boy beats with all manner of mind-mangling motifs and hallucinatory acid tweaks.

This EP from Twostep2 captures the magic of that special time across three hefty and bass-driven new cuts that stay firmly entrenched in the underground sound. An undeniable collector's piece, the slice of 90s UK acid is a time capsule of a lost scene with aspects of techno, house and breakcore especially on 'TD Time', a personal highlight. The EP has whimsical cuts like 'Start With You' and its Dial Tone beat but doesn't forsake the hallmarks of what made acid so great and counter-culture at the time. Review: Following on from his remixes of Robert James' LP Battle Of The Planets, Berlin-based Klix goes in for the kill with four examples of club-friendly grooves that are big on dancefloor dynamics but also boast a delicate sensitivity to melody that's often left behind when it comes to the minimal/tech genre. Check, for instance, the distinctly understated acid undertow to 'Just Tell Me', balanced beautifully with lush, New Order-esque pads, or the almost imperceptible trails of flute left across the landscape of 'Satisfaction'. Best of all is probably 'Squanchy Thoughts' featuring Shibafu No Baga, the vocoders and synth lines rendering it like a post-rave Kraftwerk.

Review: Who is DJ Skift? This is the question on the lips of every player in every shady alley, every cigar-stained working men's club and every illicit poker game across the land. No one is truly sure, but we know the music is grimier and sleazier than all three of those environments. Rough, gutter-chomping and prone to walloping switches, each DJ tool tickles a different itch; 'Skift Break 1' is a squat party in a bottle, all rowdy and lofi, 'Skift Break 2' is a nihilistic 21st century take on hardcore while 'Skift Break 3' flips UKG over and makes us tickle its mangey underbelly. Review: The Jalepeno label is a famously fiery funk outlet that serves up more of that dance floor heat here. It comes from Skeewiff's One Sample Short Of A Lawsuit EP back in 2000 and gets pressed to its own tidy 7" here. As the title of that EP suggests, this is music that mashes up the past with a serious of sizzling samples over driving rhythms. 'Shake What Your Mama Gave Ya' is real horn led b-boy stuff with crashing breaks, and on the flip is 'Man Of Constant Sorrow' with its nagging and iconic vocals over a more country-fried funk beat.

Review: Trident is dropping a couple of top EPs this month. One is from Derrek Carr, and one is this double white 12" that finds Deltamaxx and O En One join forces. They take us on a storytelling trip through cosmic techno that varies in mood and tempo. 'Conexxion' rides a nice rubbery, bumpy groove with incidental and wispy synth sounds, then 'Delta Pavonis' seems to soundtrack a beach party up amongst the stars. There are darker, more heady cuts like 'Donnager' and icy electro cinematics on 'Isonoe' to make for a worthy collection of sounds that work on the dancefloor and beyond.

Review: In an age when the techno shoved in your face is often the reductive bastard offspring of hard style and throwaway trance, releases like Maroki's latest for the relentlessly great Lobster Theramin are exactly what we need to keep faith. Caution, though - use what's here sparingly, as these be monsters. More than living up to the EP's name, Pots & Pans packs four tracks that emphasise playful and at times erratic percussion, used in similar ways across the lot but to different ends. The title number is a low-slung growler made for horizontal fist-punching, 'Boiler' drops dubstep-influenced breaks into the mix while stretching our minds through a wormhole - arguably the subtle winner here - while 'San Andras' opts for bouncing high energy acid worbles, and 'Hasnoot' goes for a main stage lengthy build followed by driving rhythms. Nothing you've not heard before, but all incredibly effective and perfectly executed.

Review: Deejay Skamrok kicks off this own new self titled label with a a live session. 'Piece fo the Rock 1 & 2' is a breaks mix sampler featuring a selection of beats from the full length mixes. The a-side is all mad scratching and raw breaks with yelp gin vocal stabs and some tight as you like funk drumming. It's a red hot joint designed to blow up the floor. Flip it over and there is a more jazzed up sound. Here the tinny steel drums dart about the mix with more essential cop that starts off the label on a fine footing.
