Review: Quite how this 12" on FXHE from the unheralded Tom Bugs came about isn't clear, though we'd like to think Omar S got chatting to the Bristol based producer and builder of Modular synths over a pint of Guinness in a Stokes Croft pub before a gig. Whilst few people would fancy the unenviable task of following up the huge recent LP from Omar S, Bugs shows enough ingenuity on this Living Leaving 12" to make him a perfect fit for FXHE. Nestling in at the dubby end of the FXHE spectrum, like a sleepy eyed Luke Hess, both parts of "Living Leaving" demonstrate that Bugs mastery of obvious modular synths is also blessed with an innate understanding of lo-fi melodics. Indeed there's a freeform sense to how they unfurl which hints that Bugs committed these straight to tape. Another fine FXHE transmission!

Review: Six releases in and Michigander label head Brian Kage teams up with the legendary French Techno producer, Taho, aka David Jacopin. The electronic music world knows to put respect on the Motor City, but the "Detroit EP" represents a fusion, emphasizing l'accent aigu - not a typo or spec on your screen that needs cleaning. Between Kage and Taho, their production pedigree includes releases for labels like FXHE, Planet-E, Delsin, F.Comm, and more, so it's no surprise the pairing makes for a masterfully produced EP covering the spectrum of Detroit house and techno sounds, with an added deft touch from its French connection.

Review: Five years have now passed since Russia-based Stef Mendisis first set out his stall as a maker of dark, intense, lo-fi and mind-altering club techno. In that time he's released just as handful of 12" singles, though all have been spot on. There's plenty to enjoy on the Greek producer's first outing on Mancunian label CLERGY, from the warehouse-friendly, stab-happy stomp of opener "Critical Ratio", to the similarly slamming surge of closing cut "Chroma", where hands-aloft riffs and short, looped female vocal snippets ride a booming, lo-fi techno groove. Sandwiched in between you'll find more rave-ready business, with the clap happy, organ-sporting peak-time sweatiness of "Memorex" standing out.

Review: Nina Kraviz's wonderful Trip label squeezes out one more bonkers techno trailblazer in 2019 and it comes from core label artist Vladimir Dubyshkin. Right from the get go this one has you in a spin thanks to the manic bird tweets, layered up vocal sounds and hyper speed drums of "Rural Woman." "Grasshopper's Opinion" is another one built on relentless drums with weird samples - this time a grasshopper - and "Customs & Traditions" piles up the kick drums, freaky vocal loops and machine gun synths into a wall of mesmeric techno noise. "Elvis Has Left The Building" brings the trance in fine fashion to end what is one hell of a ride.

Review: V2A is a brand new alias from one of electronic music's most storied studio sorts, '90s progressive house producer turned in-demand mastering engineer Gordon Pohl. The "Rodarte EP" is typical of his 21st century releases, sitting as it does somewhere between lo-fi slowed-down techno, off-kilter IDM and hazy ambient techno bliss. While some of the tracks could entrance the right dancefloors - see the sparse, hypnotic minimalism of spaced-out opener "Eins" and the slow acid pulse of "Drei", which includes a rhythmic element so distant you'll think one of your neighbours is doing DIY - it seems designed primarily for maximum immersive impact in a home listening setting. That's particularly true of closing cut "Vier", where rhythmical pulses underpin long, drawn out chords.

Review: Ewan Smith's first 12" of 2018 sees him return to the welcoming embrace of Aus Music, a label he last graced almost three years ago. This time round, there are three tracks to choose from. A-side "Ideal-Passage", a bouncy, techno tempo workout blessed with a restless, undulating bassline, dreamy chords and the kind of clipped guitar samples that were once the preserve of French Touch producers, undoubtedly steals the show, offering the perfect balance between funk-fuelled dancefloor antics and head-in-the-clouds beauty. This vibe continues on the arguably deeper and even more melodious "Thewizzwasfordillysmissus", while closer "Sicko" wraps a chunky, UK garage-influenced rhythm track in tech house style electronics glitches and yearning synth stabs.

Review: Fresh from the runaway success of his all-star collaboration with Adam Beyer and Green Velvet, "Space Date", Layton Giordani returns to Drumcode with his first fresh solo material since 2017. All four tracks are formidably floor-friendly in the "big room techno" style that has turned the Drumcode crew into global stars in recent years. Giordani begins with the tribal drums, atmospheric chords, acid stabs and bleeping synth melodies of "New York City To Amsterdam", before doffing a cap to Italo-disco on the electro-techno chug of "Enter The Stratosphere". Over on side B, "Body Language" is an angular, acid-fired peak-time thumper, while closing cut "Black Mirror" sees him fix gated, trance style riffs to a typically throbbing, bass-heavy techno groove.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Trelik returns with a repackaged edition of one of the catalogue's most treasured releases. "Overcome" and "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)" need little introduction, and now come sporting the new TR11:11 matrix number. Written and produced by Thomas Melchior and Baby Ford aka Soul Capsule, these tracks came from one of the many sessions recorded at the West London Ifach Studio in 1999. On the A Side "Overcome" is stripped back and energetic, driven by rolling and shuffling garage style beats, tight bubbling bass and atmospheric synth pads. The intermittent vocal samples and the release's signature organ set you up for the flip, "Lady Science (NYC Sunrise)". Possibly one of house music's most emotive pieces, the track builds slowly with the introduction of each part building a story of soulful optimism based around a sparse palette of deep synths, uplifting keys and warm analogue bass. The understated beauty of the main vocal riff never seems to grow old or tired with the track lending itself perfectly to either main room, peak-time play or after-hours sessions alike. Review: Osaka's Koshiro "YPY" Hino built his reputation on a series of fearlessly experimental cassette releases, before breaking cover to deliver a 12" of frazzled techno on Nous last year. Zurhyrethm marks his long-form vinyl debut, and contains eight suitably experimental tracks stretched across two slabs of wax. While there are clear tropical influences, a humid feel and nods towards the visceral pleasures of ambient, Hino's greatest strength is his eccentric drum programming. Zurhyrethm's dense - but often subtly mixed - percussive backing dominates throughout, with nods to African and South American rhythms, Sweet Exorcist's C.C.CD-era "clonk techno" (look it up), and the metallic clanking of classic industrial music.

Review: Ever the champion of brains and brawn in equal measure, Maceo Plex makes his debut appearance on Drumcode with this punchy beast of a single. "Conjure Dreams" features plenty of Plex signifiers, from the rounded and rowdy bassline pump to the haunting tone of the synth lines, neatly packaged in a chunky framework of big room drums. "Conjure Floyd" meanwhile burrows into more minimal territory where the tones are amelodic and the percussion takes the lead, calling to mind the restraint and tension of classic M_nus productions where so much could be said with so little.

Review: This record is named after Vedanta, an ancient philosophy based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India. The music, originally composed and produced by Joseph S Joyce and later remixed by Sebastian Mullaert of Minilogue, was greatly inspired, after reading commentaries from Swami Rama Tirtha's biography "The Scientist & Mahatma" - Chapter 1 - Vedanta and The Secret of Success. Now, some nine years later, it gets served up as a remix EP. There's a dark El Choop Reconstruct, a gorgeous ambient version from Sebastian Mullaert, a minimal headscape from Van Bonn, Federson SF goes warm and dubby and then a crisp, tech-edged vibe from Paul 90 ends the EP in style.

Review: Monstrously glassy, yet heavy hard techno cuttage from the French RAW crew, who welcome four stunning audio fragments from various artists in their orbit. It's the seventh release in the Gemstones series, which is in turn inspired by different types of precious stones. Opener 'Neo Tokyo Vision' is an exciting and cutting tittilator, with massive rave stabs and a nigh-perfect balance of weight and highs, evoking the feeling of freely trawling the city at night with reckless abandon. Things grow grungier from thereon, with the likes of 'Black Mesa' and 'Burned Out' hearing the EP grow increasingly soily, subterranean.

Review: As the founder of his own Pushmaster Discs platform, Mattia Trani has been able to steer his own course into the field of hard-edged techno over the past 10 years or so. Now he's offered up his 2021 album Scenery to a heavyweight cast of remixers, spread over two releases to give greater prominence to the powerful results contained within. On this first version, the one and only minimal master Robert Hood leads the charge with a clangorous, industrial version of 'One More Step' before Ken Ishii brings a tightly-wound pressure to 'Scenery'. Then Luke Slater dons his Planetary Assault Systems cap to take 'One More Step' skywards before Marcel Dettmann offers a surprisingly deep, trippy yet measured version for the warm up hours. Review: Upstairs Asylum Recordings is one of the many seminal Detroit labels run by local legend Norm Talley. It's right in the middle of a busy run right now with no fewer superb run with three new EPs all dropping in quick succession. This one is a split EP with US duo Solid Gold Playaz taking care of the a-side. As always with this pair, their sounds are deep and dusty house with exquisite melodies tugging at the heart. On the flip, Gari Romalis steps up with the slick percussive skip of 'Detroit After Dark' then 'Panties' from Brian Neal brings jacked up analogue groves that lean into techno with a big fat bassline.

Review: Back in 2021 Italian hard techno producer Mattia Trani released his standout Scenery LP on his own label, Pushmaster Discs. Two years on, he's amassed a frankly staggering cast of remixers to cast their spells over his original tracks, compiled on two separate volumes. After the likes of Hood, Ishii, Slater and Dettmann performed their rites on part one, now it's the turn of some breakthrough names you'll be wanting to take note of. Indira Paganotto brings an eerie, trance-flecked atmosphere to 'No Future', Paul Ritch opts for a cavernous kind of dub techno pressure and Luigi Madonna tweaks out some acid styles on 'Inner Hardships'. Meanwhile the B-side opens up with Alignment's jackhammer workout on 'End Of Days', and Lee Ann Roberts closes the circle with her rave-ready, 303-toting version of 'Biologic Horror'.

Review: Steve O'Sullivan's Mosaic label is back with a second volume of its dubs series, this time on nice yellow vinyl with Sub Basics and Fletcher given one side each to shine. Sub Basics goes first with 'Mediterranean', a lovely liquid dub with bottomless depths and perfectly smooth, frictionless drums. Lovely soft melodies drift in and out as the echoing hits and icy hi-hats help oil this most heady of grooves. On the flip, Fletcher offers up 'Sludge' which is a little more tense and menacing, with darker bass and more texture as well as distant groaning pads that keep you guessing and on edge.

Review: A rather unique new EP in the straddled modes of trance of breakbeat, 'Celebrate The Days' is the latest V/A from German stalwarts Day By Day, and succeeds in motivating us to do, well, just that. Perfect material for igniting tearful beachside bum-wiggles in far-off global corners, it's evident that these tracks are cut from only the finest production cloth. It's in the name: 'Tear At Rave' by Sasha Nevolin sounds like it's just emerged from some kind of cybernetic waterfall, while B-side intrigues, like Nvsession's 'Endure Love', get at the more flow-static and hypnotic elements of ecstatic dance moments.

Review: James Pennington remains one of the cult veterans of Detroit's techno legacy, right there at the beginning and wholly revered by those across his work. Even if he still exists a little on the fringes compared to some of his peers, releases like this remind you how respected he is, and for good reason. 'Winds Of Fear' just hits that balance between the true, deep-rooted, classic kind of techno and the otherness which makes the best of the genre memorable instead of forgettable. The trombone-like synth line forming the melodic bedrock of the track is just not something you hear often in techno, but it sounds powerful especially on top of the rough, urgent slap of the Suburban Knight drums. As if the original wasn't enough, we get Robert Hood going in on the track with a tight but funky as hell edit and a dusty beatdown version from Eddie Fowlkes. Legends, assemble!

Review: Fresh from releasing one of his best singles to date - the deep, melodic, peak-time ready techno brilliance of 'Granada' - Stojche returns to his own imprint, Tangible Assets, with another must-check EP. The Berlin-based Macedonian begins by wrapping spacey, dub techno style motifs around a galloping techno beat on 'Frontline', before opting for sweaty, jacking drums, throbbing bass and breathless ride cymbals aplenty on 'Body Language'. Over on side B, 'Farewell' sees him once again fuse dub techno and melodic techno tropes on the genuinely excellent 'Farewell', before pivoting back towards peak-time, shirts-off dancefloors on the sci-fi synth-sporting brilliance of undulating closing cut 'Nihilism'.

Review: Mineral Cuts is back with more otherworldly tech house offerings, this time in the form of a split 12". KG Beat is up for with a well constructed and prog-tinged track that is always on the move; always giving you the feeling that it is going somewhere big. It's the synth sequences that convey that feeling and mean you remain locked in throughout. Cosmic Soup Sound System then styes sup to twist melons a little more with 'Eddie De Boing De Boing,' another track that gives you a dancefloor rush with waves of warm synth over old school tech house drums that are perfectly clean and punchy.

Review: A couple of years back, the revitalised Hooj Choons label released an album of orchestra-sporting covers of classic dance cuts of the 1990s under the HEO: Hooj Ensemble Orchestra tag, then got rave revivalists Borai and Denham Audio to remix their new version of trance classic 'Cafe Del Mar'. Here those mixes - a frankly filthy, bass-propelled 'Rave Booty' mix and a more acid-flecked, grandiose breakdown-sporting 'Pluck Dub' - finally make it onto wax, alongside the Club Glow duo's similarly previously digital-only reworks of Transformer 2's early 90s 'Hooj' classic 'Fruit of Love'. More tactile and loved up, with tactile bass, pleasing pianos and glassy-eyed vocal snippets, the pair's 'Redux' mix is simply sublime, while Borai's solo dub is a deliciously dreamy, rush-inducing affair that sounds like a future rave classic.

Review: There's a high-concept story attached to the TerraFirm label that is intriguingly well formed and thorough. It goes like this: "TerraFirm provides the desiccated, toxified, irradiated or otherwise uninhabitable planets of this sector with a suite of services to rectify any environmental challenge." Taking the reins for the seventh outing is Spandrel who serves up bendy, rubbery, body-popping house-cum-techno. 'Floaterz' is a deep cruiser, and so is 'Night Winds Eternal' but with trippy melodies. On the flipside, 'Ornithological Studies' gets more bristly in its cosmic excursions and last of all is the superbly hooky and loopy dub tech roller 'Colonizer Appreciation Day.'

Review: Better-known in the Motor City as DJ Gusto, August Williams makes his bow on Detroit's original techno imprint, Juan Atkins' much-loved Metroplex. He first offers up 'The Hook Up', a relaxed electro workout marked out by hip-hop tempo beats, sparkling synthesiser arpeggio lines and gorgeous electronic melodies, before opting for a more hypnotic, dark, clandestine and minimalistic techno sound on superb machine jam 'Dark T'. Williams successfully blurs the boundaries between late-night deep house and sci-fi techno on 'Pushback', while 'Submission' pairs a vintage Motor City techno style groove with discordant, mind-mangling motifs.

Review: The legendary techno pioneer that is Josh Wink is still managing to turn out sleek and fresh cuts decades after he changed the game with his seminal 'Higher State of Consciousness' tune. The Philly-born and bred artist lands on Swedish behemoth Drumcode here with some mighty fine weapons - 'Mind's Eye' is first up and is a bulky and muscular roller with prickly acid and gritty cosmic melodies. Review: Notzing makes his debut on the Spanish label Warm UP here having impressed with several solid EPs before now. This one has already been road-tested around the world by label head Oscar Mulero so it is pretty much guaranteed to make an impact. It is brutally raw and industrial-tinged techno with hard yet intricate, mental and physical details. 'Protae' is the first to make a mark with its rusted loops and unrelenting drums, then 'Fagus' pulls back to more minimal and atmospheric loops full of menace. 'Ekaterin' is a hazy mix of fuzzy frequencies and whacked-out drums and two further cuts layer up intense bass tones and deft synth manipulations. Artful tackle, for sure.

The bassline is a filthy and old-school gem with organ chord stabs and spoken word snippets adding the irresistible sense of naughty house funk. DMA then bangs the box with cosmic synths and hints of 90s post-rave, Pilot System cruise on a chunky bit of bass-driven house and Frozilla & TJ go deep on far-sighted chords and bubbly bass. Review: Techno team-ups don't come bigger than this, as Drumcode's overlord of all things mega-tech Adam Beyer links up with Chicago's agent provocateur Green Velvet to give you your next stadium shaking anthem. This isn't the first time Beyer and Velvet have worked together - you could find them on the 2018 track 'Space Date' for one thing - but there's a sense 'Simulator' will become their calling card as a formidable double act. It's simply huge, catchy as hell and full of all the fireworks you could wish for from a super-sized techno workout, all guided by Velvet's unmistakable voice ducking and diving around the expertly engineered mix.
