Dim Sum EP (12")
Cat: AUS 1578. Rel: 11 May 15
Minimal/Tech House
  1. Dim Sum (7:27)
  2. Anna Love (7:48)
  3. Purple (5:55)
Review: Breach first came to our attention back three or four years ago during the great 'post-dubstep' and 'future bass' boom, an explosion of ideas and musical freedom which has seen many of its artists go on to achieve great things across different corners of the electronic music sphere. Breach has kept true to his roots, the only major difference now being that his grooves are considerably more locked in a house tempo and not as loose or rattling. However, "Dim Sum" is still a track with a great personality, where a rigid percussion bundle makes up for the lack of a kick drum in its arrangement. On the flipside, "Anna Love" is the housier of the lot, a gorgeously full groove full of tribalism and soul, while "Purple" boasts the sort of UK street house that you wouldn't find elsewhere. In the game. Pure gold.

Review: Former Panorama Bar resident and local Berlin fixture Cassy Britton presents her first full length release since giving up her residency and leaving Europe's clubbing capital for the sunny shores of Los Angeles. The Donna LP features some dusty classic house sounds of the deeper spectrum, as heard previously on her eponymous imprint, Uzuri or Perlon sporadically over the last 10 years and her great vocals which veer from spoken word, haunting/monotone to high pitched diva moves are a constant throughout. Highlights for us were the uplifting deep disco of "All I Do", the soulful deep funk on her cover of Prince's "Strange Relationship" or the emotive yet tough techno of "Move".

  3. I'm Missin You (6:29)
Review: Next up on Will Saul's tech house powerhouse is the return of NYC by way of New Haven maestro Drew Lustman aka FaltyDL with some energised modern hi-NRG vibes on "Wondering Mind". With its diva vocals, euphoric arpeggios and energised rhythms all working together for perfect dancefloor drama. Next up, the cleverly titled "Paradox Garage" goes for more reverse looking aesthetics on this evocative acid house tribute, awash in grainy lo-fi aesthetics, bumpy bass and jacked vocals on something reminiscent of classic 808 State. Finally on the flip, we have "I'm Missin You" which is also presented in a brazenly retro aesthetic with its grainy and saturated tape quality. Complete with Jamie Principle style vocals, disco guitar licks and all round neon-lit aesthetic which takes you back to the legendary Windy City days of Trax Records and WBMX Hot Mix radio late night sessions.

Review: On his previous two full-lengths, London-based Glaswegian Andy Graham promoted a hazy, evocative take on house and minimal techno. On this third studio set - his first for some six years - Graham is much more concerned with the atmospheric potential of electronic compositions that variously doff a cap to classic ambient, IDM, James Blake, the screwed R&B-tronica of Hudson Mohawke, and the loved-up synth-pop of Junior Boys. As a result, Space In Your Mind is a tactile, dreamy affair, with even the occasional forays into deep house territory - see "Kalstars" and "Ancestors" - recalling the loved-up feel of classic Visionquest material.

Review: Will Saul's Aus Music label is a decade old in 2016 and this celebratory compilation doubles up as a landmark 100th release. Due out across quadruple vinyl, triple CD and digital formats, the cunningly-titled Aus 100 features a weighty 24 tracks from a suitably high profile cast. Along with music from Saul himself, you'll find cuts here from label staples Bicep, Midland, Huxley, Deetron, Nick Hoppner, Pearson Sound, Youandewan, Marquis Hawkes, Gerd, Sei A (who presented the label's last full length release the Space In Your Mind LP), Bwana, Fold, Shenoda, Appleblim & Komon. Here's to another 100 eh Will?

Review: 2016 marks ten years since Berlin-based Brit Will Saul established the Aus Music label. To celebrate, he's put together this triple-disc package, featuring brand new and previously unheard cuts from the imprint's growing roster of artists. Saul himself provides a tasty DJ mix on disc one, with the second and third discs containing unmixed versions of the same exclusive material. It's as varied as you'd expect - think numerous shades of house and techno, plus hazy downtempo gear and cutting-edge electronica - and boasts killer cuts from some of electronic music's most notable talents. These include Cottam, Bicep, Marquis Hawkes, DJ T, Deetron, Nick Hoppner and DJ October, whose spacey, bongo-laden "Drama Queen" is a particular highlight.

Review: Having spent the last seven years delivering impressive singles on a variety of labels - most notably Aus Music, Secretsundaze and Hype_Ltd - Ewan Smith has decided the time is right to unleash his debut album under the Youandewan alias. There Is No Right Time is a gently expansive affair, with the Scottish producer utilizing both electronic and acoustic instrumentation on tracks that perfectly showcase his diverse range of influences. Contrast, for example, the spacey jazz-house of "Be Good To Me, Poly", the dusty, pitched-down deep house warmth of "Time To Leave (Can't Mix)", and the sparkling, B12 style IDM/electro fusion of "Something Keeps Me Real Quiet"; all are immaculately produced and impressively melodious, but hugely different stylistically. He also joins forces with Huerta on album highlight "Left On Lucy", a glistening fusion of bubbly, synth-heavy deep house, Motor City futurism and sun-bright new age melodies.

  3. Fool Be Cool
  4. Fool Be Cool (Marquis Hawkes remix)
Review: Having first popped up on Will Saul's Aus Music imprint last summer with the superb Youandewan EP, Ewan Smith returns to the Berlin-based label with a spring in his step. There's something particularly magical about opener "Stak Poly Looms", which wraps synthesized marimba melodies and spine-tingling chords around a steppy, off-kilter, techno-tempo groove. The deeper "Isabel" - a fusion of dub house grooves and gentle tunefulness - offers some respite, before the acid-flecked (and sumptuously soulful) "Fool Be Cool" pushes things up a notch while retain Smith's trademark depth. Dixon Avenue Basement Jams man Marquis Hawkes remixes the latter, delivering a thumping, warehouse-friendly revision.
