Track 1 (15:01)

Track 3 (4:59)

Track 5 (7:26)
Review: Lo-fi industrial experimentation from Michigan outfit Wolf Eyes, who by this point had already become renowned for their strange avant-garde approach to a genre that hasn't exactly played things by the books for the most part. Those looking for tunes to unwind to need not apply, while those in search of something that pushes the boundaries of sound, not to mention song craft, will likely feel right at home. Originally recorded in 2000 in Ann Arbor, something of musical hotbed in the Motor City state, this challenging five track collection was laid down on a two-track reel-to-reel and feels almost handmade. Packed full of distortion, subtle discordance, interference substituting melody, and a constant love for the abrasive, it's a benchmark-setting example of what makes these guys so vital, incomparable and insane.

Review: Shackleton makes music like no other - tightly intertwined experiential rhythms that often have dark, gothic, underworld and ancient ritualistic overtones. He's made records alone and in collab with the likes of Ricardo Villalobos and, earlier this year, Scotch Rolex. Now he's back on his own Woe To The Septic Heart label with The Scandal Of Time, a first long player since 2021's Departing Like Rivers. Anna Gerth features on some of the cuts and Shackleton says this will be his last for a while. It's dubby, lo-fi, drone-y and full of shadows. See 'Faraway Flowers' for intense industrial ambient, or 'Abend Wird Es Wieder' for more hallucinatory and suspensory sounds.

Review: Ryuichi Sakamoto's 1984 classic, Ongaku Zuka, finally gets a long overdue re-release. Heralded at the time as yet another example of Japan's sorely-missed musical genius in full flow, the tracks feature contributions from Yellow Magic Orchestra's Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, alongside Yasuaki Shimizu, Tatsuro Yamashita and Toshinori Kondo. Originally released in two versions, one with a bonus 7" two-track EP and another with a limited edition 12" three-tracker, both are now being reissued for the modern age. Part of an ongoing celebration of Sakamoto's life following his death in March 2023, when Ongaku Zukan (Musical Encyclopedia) hit it marked the celebrated musician and composer's first top five hit in his homeland, building on the success of both his soundtrack to Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence and the Yellow Magic Orchestra, on which time had only recently been called. Syth pop perfection, with unique, mesmerising instrumental compositions, it's an essential for any fan.

Review: Huerco S' West Mineral welcomes back Flaty & OL's Serwed for what is their fourth full eighth album. It is one that finds them move away somewhat from the more typical bass abstractions you might expect from them and into a world of shiny experimental sounds that harken back to cult video game soundtracks like Resident Evil. FM pads, workstation bells from the 90s and sci-fi drums and textures all make this one a beguiling listen full of hyper real emotions and eerie rhythms. IA great new direction that makes for superb and immersive listening.

Review: Joey Kendrick is perhaps better known for the braindance gear he's put out under his own name for Rephlex and the like, but he's also played around with plenty of aliases over the years too. His work as +10 actually predates his breakthrough years on Rephlex, having been released on the classy Canadian label Napalm Enema. Grace came out in 2007 and it sounds a little rowdier than later Kendrick works, but that's also part of its charm. Hence stalwart Belgian braindance believers WeMe have opted to reissue the CDr-only album as a double vinyl for your twitch, glitchy, acidic pleasure. It's a feast for the cerebellum, no doubt about it.

Review: Without a doubt, one of the most anticipated reissue compilations of the year is this collection of Future Sound of London side projects. In 2007 this was a CD-only compilation of early 90s tracks as well as unreleased ones from the same age. As the lore of FSOL continues to grow over the past 30+ years, their side projects have gotten more and more attention from the people who love those early rave sounds. Now for the first time, a vinyl version of it with no less than a 3x12 to harness all this early 90s techno goodness. All the tracks are by Dougans and Cobain and the aliases are the same. This 2007 album however has a wealth of new material from the same time period as Earthbeat. It is amazing that one release like this by two producers can be such a prime example of the UK sound that changed dance music forever. If you want the 90s UK rave reissue of the year, here it is!

Review: One of the most leftfield cinematic successes of 2023 has easily been the bizarre, loosely based on a true story Cocaine Bear, known for being the final on screen performance from the late, great Ray Liotta. As succinct and direct as a title can be, the film tells the tale of a bear who managed to lay his snout in an abundance of mis-located cocaine, before leading to a frenzied rampage. Scored by Devo mastermind Mark Mothersbaugh, the soundtrack serves up a pulsing blend of coldwave synth lines and industrial bombast, with moments of Tangerine Dream indebted electro-ambience sprinkled throughout.

Review: Bibio's new album explores pain, loss and suffering but has some hopeful and optimistic melodies bring the light. It's inspired by the "vivid yet vague, impressionistic, powerful yet difficult to recall" power of dreams and as such the tracks all shift and smeared, smudge and melt into one another like intertwining musical collages with more structured pieces in between. As always with Bibio there is a rose-tinted nostalgia to this music and shades of Boards of Canada. Standouts include the likes of 'The Clothesline & The Silver Birch' and 'Flesh Rots, Pip Sown.'

Review: Art-rock auteur Yves Tumor occupies a headspace like no other, putting experimental noise, r&b and glam rock together in a bold, ever-escalating fusion, showing off a flair for simply making powerful Frankensteins out of their favourite styles. Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds) adds yet once more this pot: it's a glistening, richly detailed, arguably ultimate expression of their vision, mixing such far-flung influences as My Bloody Valentine, Prince and The Smashing Pumpkins into a deep affector for the Gen Z-eitgeist.

Everything from goth-pop to experimental noise rock (usual styles for Yves Tumor) crop up here, hammering home ther increasingly crazed world after a directional shift following the EP 'Heaven To A Tortured Mind'.

Review: Among the many hot takes about the recent London romance film Rye Lane is that it is the UK's Amelie, contributing further to the continued coolification of South London's Peckham, in which the film is set. Whatever your take on the film is, it's certainly far less controversial to consider its stellar soundtrack work by Kwesi Sey aka Kwes, a longtime fixture of London's musical spirit. A curveball compared to his wholly original releases with Warp, Kwes took a detour here, in part taking on the image of his collaborator Mica Levi by debuting his first ever soundtrack. Quirky, pink and full of the ideal spirit of the film, Kwes' chosen sound is unfiltered, opting for ear-to-the-ground neo-soul motifs and clear-eyed ballads written with his friends Tirzah and Sampha.

Review: The Black Dog were one of the core early Warp acts, and their Spanners album - the third full length of their career at the time - is one of their best. Despite its roots in the early IDM scene, the album managed to climb to number 30 in the UK charts back when it arrived in January 1995. It's a great mix of unexpected experimental oddness and dancefloor rhythms that makes for a superb trip through what was then the modern world. Pitchfork have rated it one of the 50 best IDM albums ever and this reissue reminds us why.

Review: While his AR antics and massive stage shows might be a far cry from the subversive rave culture he came up in, Aphex Twin remains one of the most fascinating and gifted electronic dance music producers of his generation. Get past the fanfare and bluster, and it's still an incredibly exciting prospect to be opening up a new box of his charms, and he's as generous as he's ever been on this new four-track EP. As a key architect of the braindance sound (whether he likes the tag or not), Richard D. James demonstrates his gift for uncanny emotionality and dexterous drum programming on the lead single 'Blackbox Life Recorder 21f', hitting a spot not too far from the realm of his last album Syro and The Tuss material. With a lush fold-out sleeve to house it all in, it's another fine addition to the canon of a true cult phenomenon.

Review: Given his recent stint producing The Weeknd, you might have been expecting a drastic turn towards the mainstream on this LP, but Again is as complex and challenging a listen as ever, spanning everything from Mingus-in-space double bass reflection to walls of blazing, My Bloody Valentine-style guitar textures. It's the kind of album that'll take a few listens to really get your head around, but it's more than worth it, a proper trip.

Review: Warp continues to comb back through the landmark Artificial Intelligence series with this landmark record from Jochem Paap, aka Speedy J. Alongside a tandem reissue of Richie Hawtin's F.U.S.E. album Dimension Intrusion, this remastered edition of Ginger takes us back into the heart of early 90s techno innovation, when new ideas were developing globally at a rate of knots. Paap had already established himself in the harder end of the techno pool, but Ginger flipped the script with an immersive, meditative exploration of minimalism and melodic structure. Amongst the eternal classics are some dazzling miniatures deemed 'Fills' which make for some of the most compelling listening on this seminal slice of early 90s techno.

Review: Not too many artists can create a buzz quite like when word spreads of a new album more than Squarepusher. Dostrotime is the first album for Tom Jenkinson in nearly four years, one of his longest breaks between albums. Proceeding the album release, the video for the hardcore acid banger Wendorlan has been making the rounds on the internet. If this is any indication of the rest of the album, then expect some serious heat. Audio samples have been tightly secured to protect leaks online until the release date. This album will be spread over a 2x12 and nicely packaged in gatefold form and no doubt contain some great gallops through the genre spectrum like only Squarepusher can do.

Review: 'Vida' is the latest and most comprehensive collection of Susana Baron Supervielle's electroacoustic works, all of which were recorded between 1974 and 1980. Never heard before, the eight pieces making up this retrospective compilation from Wah Wah are salvaged wellsprings of field-recorded echoes and tape-magnetic delight, providing ample insight into the inner goings-on of the largely Brazil-based musician and electroacoustic composer. Packed with samples from film, and intertexts via Pierre Schaeffer, as well as the cultural intercourse between Paris, Argentina, and Buenos Aires, the overall palette is one of surreal enjoyment and trembly oddness.

Review: Grens is a Dutch duo who turned the heads of the Vrystaete label head with a self-released tape Geen Mens Die Op Mij Let. As such he has signed them up for this new album De Verborgen Kamer which he says is "a bit darker" than usual, but we love it. It is both organic yet dark electronic and sounds as much like a recording of a live performance as it does a meticulously crafted studio work. The six pieces are all heady ambient works that pair wispy pads and warm, glowing harmonies over occasional broken beats and suggestive rhythms. It's lo-fi, gritty and imperfect but with a very human sense of emotion.

Review: The late great Muslimgauze has one of the most unique sounds in electronic music, even now, many year son. His fusion of the electronic and the ethnic, the experimental and the noisy is in a class of one. Return To The City Of Djinn came first back in 1999 and is the seance of two collabs between John Bolloten aka The Rootsman and Bryn Jones aka Muslimgauze. It is a mash up of The Rootsman's Into The Light and 52 Days to Timbuktu albums with added Arab cultural references from Jones. There are cut up loops, glassy effects, dub drums and well rod vocal fragments that make for an atmospheric sound track to a stroll through a busy Eastern city.

Review: French outfit Chateau Flight have spent two years in the studio making music, playing around and experimenting and now the fruits of that work are presented on this new album La Folie Studio. It is full of the sound of analogue machines conversing and the artists themselves speaking through their darkened basslines or eerie pads. Occult worlds are crafted, ambient soundscapes are cooked up and leftfield cosmic explorations occur throughout a journeying album full of a wide range of emotions. This lovely record features guests on the odd track such as Johnny Nash on guitar, Cosmic Neman mumbling on 'Mange', John Cravache playing 'his special organ" and Bony Bikaye singing on 'Esika Molimo Ezali'. It's an occult world of left of centre sound that will keep you coming back for more.

Review: Plenty of electronic artists can claim to focus on repetitive layers, loops and timbre. Few can say they've explored these ideas to the extent Carl Stone has. Released to mark his 70th birthday, this collection looks not to offer a complete retrospective on the seminal producer, but instead a supporting document to the archival re-releases that have been doing the rounds in recent times. Trying to put a label on what's here is less relevant than the how or even why. Working at CalArts, Stone, a then-aspiring music maker, was tasked with preserving vinyl recordings by dubbing them to tape. This repetitive process was used to store 10,000 albums, from Renaissance to electronica, and involved re-recording multiple discs at the same time. After that experience, it's understandable that he'd find himself using cut and paste style fractions of sound, samples, vocals, and melodies to make old parts new again, removing the source material from time and place so it exists only in the now.
