Deadman (12")

Bass
  1. Deadman
  2. Deadman (King Midas Death dub remix)
Review: Sam Shackleton's "Deadman" was the surprise hit of his recent Fabric mix - a sought-after gem that took his particular take on techno and dubstep in a thrilling new direction. Now, it's finally available on vinyl, alongside an impressive King Midas Sound remix from Kevin Martin. "Deadman" itself is the one for club plays, an intoxicating fusion of conga-led percussion - influenced, one expects, by the tropical beats of UK funky's most forward-thinking practitioners - and his usual densely layered atmospherics. The King Midas Remix, meanwhile, offers a spaced-out, heavily ambient take that delights and confuses in equal measure.

  1. Headcleaner (11:35)
  2. In Norwegen Ganz Verwegen (6:25)
Review: Yes! Our main man Shack is back on his own Woe To The Septic Heart with his undeniably singular take on electronic music. Taking string influence from the likes of Muslimgauze, Shackleton has consistently blurred the lines of UK dance music over the years, never truly heading into techno or dubstep, but also never too close to total electronic abstraction. "Headcleaner" is a rich and vibrant blend of his familiarly hypnotic percussion, eerie background sonics and that wavey whirlpool of melodies. "In Norwegen Ganz Verwegen" is broken and disjointed, loose and genre-bending, offering the groove a sort of trans-like state that never quite seems to break free. Wonderful stuff, as always.

Experimental/Electronic
  1. Endless Memento/Regression/Wading Through The Underworld (14:23)
  2. The Future Is Hurt/Dirt & Fields (15:43)
  3. Hinter Der Vitrine (14:03)
  4. Our Sharpened Blade/Rid Yourself Of The Parasites/Endless Longing (19:21)
Review: For his latest full-length, post-dubstep innovator turned dystopian soundscape specialist Shackleton has joined forces with British-German singer-songwriter Anika. Her drowsy, chilling tones provide the perfect foil for the producer's alternately paranoid and ethereal musical compositions; stretched-out pagan epics that sit somewhere between the soundtrack for The Wicker Man, the wind-swept ambience of Firecracker's Mac Talla Nan Craeg - compilation, and the experimental sound collages of the Music Concrete movement. It makes for a heady, intoxicating and at times otherworldly listening experience, even if it features numerous pastoral elements. Prepare to be thrilled and scared in equal measure.

Devotional Songs (gatefold double 12")

  1. Rinse Out All Contaminants (7:27)
  2. You Are The One (13:00)
  3. Twelve Shared Addictions (12:27)
  4. Father, You Have Left Me (10:14)
Review: What do you get when you combine the enigmatic sounds of Shackleton's enchanted polyrhythms with the vocals of eccentric Italian performance artist Ernesto Tomasini? Devotional Songs, that's what. This intriguing collaboration presents itself four long playing tracks honoured with a side of vinyl each. The music itself sways from wind chimed ambient grooves and percussive tubular bells to theatrical synth pop. The D-side's "Father, You Have Left Me" is the most shamanic/demonic production on here, while "You Are The One" is a gentle, summery and cautiously upbeat affair. Like nothing else you'll hear this year, it's one for the record collection (not the hard drive) and it's an undeniable, truly singular collaboration.
