Footwork (11:59)
Tympanic Warfare (9:39)
Review: Theo Parrish lays down a marker for a long overdue fifth album, apparently due out later this year, with the sublime Footwork 12". Named in reference to the dance as opposed to the breakneck offshoot of Ghetto House, "Footwork" is a sublime slab of Theo with many of his trademark production touches. Think lightly brushed percussion, meandering bassline that juts out with an odd funk, and subtle yet sumptuous musical touches, all topped off by a gruff "let me see your footwork baby" croon. Those Theo fans out there that like the man to get a bit rugged will be all over "Tympanic Warfare" too, where off the grid polyrhythms cannon around the channels, augmented by an ugly bassline and dexterous keys.

Andrew Ashong & Theo Parrish - "Flowers"
Andrew Ashong - "Take It Slow"
Andrew Ashong - "The Way She Moves" (short version)
Review: At first glance, the pairing of Forest Hill resident Andrew Ashong and Sound Signature boss Theo Parrish would seem strange. But the duo have worked together previously with the Ghanaian born vocalist (and supposed owner of a vinyl collection that would make most record shops look like a car boot sale) lending his soulful tones to Parrish's excellent nine minute plus translation of the Hot Chip and Spiritualised affiliated About Group. Whereas that collaboration was more about Ashong's voice being just one element of a production that was undoubtedly Parrish, the three tracks present on the Flowers EP look to showcase what a talent the Londoner is. Those trademark dust filled stacatto rhythms are present in the opening title track, but they never swamp Ashong's killer vocal delivery, while "Take It Slow" is bonafide D funk of the highest order. After the brutal, divisive nature of Theo's kung fu experimentalism on the Any Other Styles EP, these three tracks show him in a wholly new light and hopefully Parrish and Ashong will be making much more music together.

This Is For You (with Maurissa Rose) (10:32)
This Is For You (instrumental) (11:45)
Review: There's always a sense of reverent elation around a new drop from Theo Parrish, and he's not disappointing on this latest joint. Reports suggest this is the precursor to a new album, and there's a classic feel to this track that hints at very exciting times ahead. Parrish's sparks shine oh-so bright when he's sparring with the right vocalist, and Maurissa Rose seems to be giving him the right inspiration on "This Is For You". He's created the kind of understated soul statement that inhabits some of his most treasured albums, using a raw and simple drum machine backing to achingly beautiful key refrains that melt around Rose's voice on the vocal A side, and give rise to a sublime instrumental version on the flip.

Review: Given that this is the first album from the great Theo Parrish since 2007, it's unsurprising interest in American Intelligence has rocketed over the course of the year as Sound Signature left a trail of hints. Happily, American Intelligence is a fine album; deep and woozy in parts, undeniably soulful, shot through with jazz influences and full to bursting with killer cuts. By now, everyone should know the brilliant "Footwork" single (arguably one of the records of 2014); soon, clubs will swing to the off-kilter dancefloor jazz of "Make No War", the 21st century broken house of the epic "Fallen Funk" and the decidedly odd - but brilliant - "Helmut Lampshade".

Selector's Theme
Review: The second Sound Signature repress of the week offers a chance to re-assess the moment that the wider world was introduced to the talents of one of Detroit's most loved selectors. Released back in 1999, the Essential Selections Vol. 1 EP saw Theo collaborate with a certain Marcellus Pittman across three cuts that still sound as vibrant today. A Side lead "Night Of The Sagitarius" has the loose drum arrangements and gritty low end that will appeal to contemporary ears, but it's also augmented by an almost chilling sense of melody. Face down "Selector's Theme" is the pair in introspective mood whilst "African Roots" belongs in the canon of all time Theo greats.

What You Wanna Ask For (Dego mix) (10:11)
Review: Sound Signature's latest release is an all-star crew affair, with an impressive cast list of vocalists, musicians and producers joining main man Theo Parrish in the studio. He's at the controls on the sublime A-side mix, a jazzy affair where layered twinkling electric piano motifs, spacey chords, jazz-funk riffs and sumptuous deep house grooves combine on a fearlessly loose and organic dancefloor workout. On the flipside friend of the family Dego offers his interpretation, adding even more warmth and some tasty additional hand percussion parts whilst wisely utilizing most of the original version's intricate musical elements.

Untitled One
Review: Apart from the obvious love for his musical talents, both as a producer and as a DJ, one of the reasons why we love Theo Parrish so damn much is his repressing policy. Unlike some of his peers, the man has no problem in repressing in-demand Sound Signatures from the past, and this time it's number 32 that receives a much-welcomed resurrection. The EP features singer Dummine Depores, first on the utterly hummable and soulful "Chemistry" track, and then on "Untitled One", a classically off-kilter Parrish number filled to the brim with sampling goodness and even a distant set of guitar riffs! Killers.

Sawala Sayale (9:40)
Review: Theo Parrish's 2001 re-imagining of Recloose and Dwele's "Can't Take It" - renamed "I Can Take It" - remains one of the highlights of his illustrious career to date. A near 17-minute exploration of dusty, jazz-flecked deep house in his inimitable style, accompanied by Dwele's impeccably soulful vocals and some killer Rhodes action, it's arguably the one Theo record you need in your life. Happily, he's decided to repress the original 12", making it available to those unprepared to pay silly princes online. The often-forgotten B-side, "Sawala Sayale", is almost as good, delivering 10 minutes of relentless African drums, tribal chants and restless drum machine handclaps.

Dance Of The Drunken Drums
Review: Don't let this one go over yo head son! The final repress from Sound Signature HQ is an essential slab of late 90s Motor City deepness from Theo, presented once again for contemporary reassessment and sounding every bit as jaw dropping 14 years on. Dropping back in 1999, title cut "Overyohead" came to be regarded as a quintessential Theo Parrish track; strings incandescent with soul and lovingly off centre Rhodes riding those heavy drum arrangements towards a sweet piano infused crescendo. Face down, "Dance Of The Drunken Drums" is a prime example of Theo's own distinct brand of cavernous beatdown.

Review: This year we were granted the much awaited repress of this classic Parrish, Sound Signature masterpiece! It's hard to describe something so seminal but the title track is a shuffling drum machine workout backed with Theo's individualistic bass line style - its not really acid but it's got enough in it to be seen as techno. "Going Through Changes" takes thing down a notch, delivering a masterfully arranged Detroit house bomb complete with seductive vocals, gorgeous synth keys and the essential madness that is Parrish's percussion. Pretty damn essential...

Review: The inimitable Theo Parrish is in a class of one. His brand of music is impossible to categorise as it draws on so many unique sounds in so many unique ways. This new album is another spellbinding affair that takes scuffed up house rhythms and intertwines them with freeform percussive patterns and off-grid synths that get pulled apart then rebuilt before your very ears. It is experimental music with an improvised jazz mindset that can range from complex and dense tapestries like 'Radar Detector' to the more upbeat and playful 'Hennyweed Buckdance' via fucked up drum sketches like 'All Your Boys Are Biters.'

Review: Detroit's Theo Parrish continues to serve up expressive and utterly unique new music, but his vast back catalogue will always remain of almost just as much interest to house heads. As such his Sound Signature label has repressed some quality gems from his discography. 'Roots Revisited' first came back towards the tail end of 1998 and finds the sonic shaman in heavy percussive mode while off-grid rhythms and his unique take on soul shining through. 'Dan Ryan' is deeply meditative, while the 'Walking Thru The Sky' (feat Ron Smith - Liberation mix) is a dusty and scuffed-up deep house exploration with Theo's trademark keys.

Feel Free To Be Who You Need To Be
360@1:29ON696 (feat Dumminie Deporres - full version)
Review: Sound Signature present two of the classier moments from Mr Parrish's Sketches album in their rightful form - either side of a nice loud twelve inch. Lead track "Feel Free To Be Who You Need To Be" is Theo's most eminently danceable excursion for quite some time; arising from a 23rd century Funkadelic intro into a subaqueous Detroit electro meets funk swing that builds expertly. It's weirdly reminiscent of a retooled version of "Booty (La La)" from Bugz In The Attic with the afro excesses twisted inside out to lean heavily on the robot vocoder flex. On the flip long time collaborator Dumminie Deporres features on the don't even bother pronouncing "360@1:29ON696" which stretches a twelve minute jazz techno odyssey elegantly across the vinyl - vintage stuff from the Sound Signature boss.

Wild Out
Review: It's rare that a Theo Parrish release arrives on a label based outside the US, but when that happens it always tends to be a bit special, see the Peacefrog released LP First Floor or that humongous Carl Craig remix of Falling Up on Third Ear for evidence. Running Back seems like a perfect European outlet for Theo to grace; indeed the Sound Signature boss has already contributed two stunning revisions for Gerd Janson's label and this oh so aptly titled Hand Made EP is pretty special. Firstly it features a special extended take on "Black Mist", a track that originally formed part of Parrish's highly prized Sketches triple vinyl set from 2010 which is listed with some ambitious prices on Discogs. Cut loud at gut punching 45rpm by Dubplates and Mastering, this prime slab of Theo fonk is worth the admission alone, but you get spoilt with two new cuts from Mr Parrish in "Pop Off" and "Wild Out" that are as wilded out as his recent "Any Other Styles" cut. Running Back quite superbly describe the latter track as "a Theo Parrish demo for Dance Mania after he came back from listening to Lil Louis at the Bismark Pavilion".

Review: Rounding out this iteration of the Moods & Grooves classic series are two of its best selling releases from one of Detroit's most prolific producer's, Theo Parrish, and label head Mike Grant. The Mr. G remix of My Soul, My Spirit nets a pretty penny at the online marketplace so if the steep prices have deterred you, now is the time. Chunky was produced during the time Theo was a leader of Detroit's raw & dirty house sound. In celebration of the Moods & Grooves' 50th release it's being offered on limited colored vinyl.

Leon Carson - "China Trax" (8:32)
Theo Parrish - "Insane Asylum" (9:57)
Review: Oh yes, we love it when Theo represses some of his most sought after tracks and this one is particularly well-timed. Leron Carson is still an unknown figure, a kid who used to make viciously raw and futuristic techno tracks in the late 1980's! "China Trax", alongside the rest of his tracks on a different Sound Signature double 12", is totally ahead of its time and if it was truly made in 1987 then it is nothing short of amazing. Of course, it's not just the year it was made in that's interesting but also the fact that it's music without an age, able to be appreciated by any generation of techno freaks. Theo's own "Insane Asylum" on the flipside is also pretty monumental; rigged beats, off-kilter grooves and that familiar spontaneity so heavily associated to the label.

BT Express - "Peace Pipe" (Theo Parrish Edit)
Jackie Beavers - "Mr Bumpman (Give Me A Hand)" (Theo Parrish Edit)
Review: We're in the midst of the Theo fever at Juno HQ with the Detroit don already provided the office with some staunch listening material in the shape of his Stop Bajon edit and Amerie meets Lil Louis blend. The real gold is delivered unto us in the form of the long overdue eleventh edition of Parrish's highly prized Ugly Edits series some six years after the last volume. Anyone who's worried their bank manager by indulging in previous Ugly Edits releases will know the score here, bottom heavy druggy refixes of some of Parrish's favourite soul and disco tracks that focus on embellishing your senses with lustful energy. The A Side sees Theo mess with "Peace Pipe" by BT Express, chopping the vocals up before dousing the groove in a swathe of echoey reverb and then ascending into the track proper. Real sweaty warehouse vibes on this one! The flipside sees Parrish a long sought after standard from his DJ sets in the shape of "Mr Bumpman" by Johnny Beavers. A less frenetic counterpart to the percussive beast that is the A Side, Parrish's "Mr Bumpman" is all about keeping that killer disco funk groove locked in, which is achieved with effortless aplomb.

Leave The Funk To Us (9:43)
Review: In his usual no-nonsense fashion, Theo Parrish has not said much about the surprise release of Gentrified Love Part 2, despite it being his first fresh material since 2014. The EP features contributions from two of the Detroit's legends oldest friends: Rotating Assembly member Duminie DePorres, and original Slum Village member Waajeed. A-side "Warrior Code" is a quietly foreboding proposition, with spiraling electronics, jammed keys and cosmic chords riding a chunky, West London style broken beat groove. Flip for the altogether brighter and breezier "Leave The Funk To Us", a jaunty and jazz-wise 4/4 excursion blessed with some superb, Herbie Hancock style jazz-funk keys.

Bumping and undulating, sparkling with that classic Parrish locked-in signature, there's uplift coded deeply into the drive. "Gullah Geechee" takes the B in an original and extended form. Review: That man Theo Parrish pops up with another buy-on-sight release, this time a remake of Tullio De Piscopo's "Stop Bajon" on Italian label Archive. It's a shuffling, undulating jaunt and in true Parrish style, the track is sprawled unhurriedly over 16 minutes worth of wax. Flip over for Isoul8 & Mark De Clive-Lowe's version of the same track, which comes in on a more intergalactic discoid tip. A worthy investment for any Parrish completist, and one we suspect won't remain on the shelves for long.

Don't Play (feat Ava) (10:07)
Review: Theo Parrish is one of those characters who manages to unite lovers of both house and techno, indeed producing offerings that seem to make the distinction utterly redundant. How does he doe it? Well, if this pair of new tracks are anything to go on, it's the simple trick of making tracks that combine the soufulness and rootsy earthiness of house with a trippy sense of the futuristic and psychedelic that elevates them out of the ordinary.
Take, for instance 'In Motion's simple piano stabs and the subsequent off kilter groove that builds up around them. Or, equally, the cheeky bass keyboard manoeuvres that form the backbone of 'Don't Play' featuring Ava, funky enough to be Stevie Wonder but then matched with caustic, scything hi-hats that have more than a hint of the surreal and robotic about them. Best of all, it doesn't feel like a compromise, it feels like a full on creation that acknowledges both traditions but refuses to follow either slavishly.

Review: Theo Parrish is a world-renowned name in the global Detroit house and techno game, and he's thrown a fascinating curveball as the latest entrant for the acclaimed DJ-Kicks series. Mr. Parrish has gone above and beyond the duties of most invitees - rather than just licensing tracks from his favourite artists and big-name-friends, he's asked his own community from Detroit to each produce their own mixable tracks, exclusively for the comp. What's more, these are hardly established names - they're organic connections to Parrish, not occupying the top layer of attention and recognition. Bits from H-Fusion, Jon Dixon, Donald Lee Roland II, Ian Fink and Raybone Jones all dominate this anarchic new deconstruction of the otherwise exclusivist mix series.

Like the original 1998 release, the album is spread over two separately sold double-packs. This first volume contains some of Parrish's strongest work, including the evocative, stretched-out shuffle of "First Floor Metaphor" (all undulating synth bass, dusty deep house beats and sublime string samples), the Luther Vandross-sampling brilliance of "Only The Beginning", the fuzzy hip-hop/beatdown fusion of "Sweet Sticky", and the deep jazz-house brilliance of "Love Is War For Miles". In other words, it's all killer, no filler, but you probably knew that already.

The Twin Cities 12" originally appeared on Rick Wade's Harmonie Park label back in 2004, and original pressing currently command a pretty price in the land of Discogs. Anyone who's caught a Phil Weeks DJ set will know the man is a bonafide Theo freak and must be proud through and through to have licensed these two tracks from Harmonie Park for a much needed re-evaluation. The title track is Theo's ode to those two US cities that made him the man he is, Chicago and Detroit, born and raised in the former and now living in the latter, and it translates musically with the Chi town trackiness mixing perfectly with the murky Motor City melodies. "Dance, Sing" belongs in the holy grail of Parrish purchases, as buccaneering percussion, whispering vocals and delicate piano keys all attempt to deal with that immense booming bassline

Lights Down Low (full mix) (9:22)
Lights Down Low (This One mix) (9:32)
Review: While the other recent Theo Parrish reissue, "I Can Take It", is largely considered a Detroit deep house classic, "Lights Down Low" - released around the same time - is nowhere near as celebrated. This has always been a little puzzling, since the 2001 cut remains one of his most intoxicating and enveloping moments. Peppered with barely audience spoken word samples, twinkling pianos and tough-but-shuffling drums, the "Full Mix" is the aural equivalent of a slow, soapy rub down from a cherished lover. The more electronic, flipside "This One Mix", built around dancing synth bass and throbbing tribal drums, is, if anything, even better, dragging beatdown towards the dancefloor for a sweaty shake-down.

Feel Loved
Review: Theo Parrish and Tony Allen together on a record? What a combo! Fusing the souls of Detroit and Laos, the unlikely but neatly fitting duo has created two absolutely beautiful soul workouts here. "Day Like This" is a staccato soul roller with emphatic swooping drums, sultry washed-out vocals and big warm organs. "Feel Loved" is a jazzier, more upbeat affair. Again the drums sit at the very forefront of the mix while the rest of the rich, warm instrumentation fits in around them in a soft, dreamy state. The debut release on Theo's new Wildheart label, expect more goodies like this very very soon.

Review: On his latest expansive double-pack, Theo Parrish has decided to dip into his epic back catalogue. The four featured tracks are taken from two sought-after, hard to find EPs released in 1997 and 2001 respectively. Opener 'Smile' is arguably one of the Detroiter's most magnificent musical moments of all time: an epic slab of drowsy Motor City deep house built around idiosyncratic drum programming, ultra-deep chords, toasty bass and an effects-laden vocal snippet. 'Lost Keys' is a breezier and looser affair marked out by Latin style piano motifs, jazzy house beats and tactile bass, while 'Dreamer's Blues' is a languid, percussion-and-electric piano rich number that tends towards the hazy and jazzy. Finally, 'Lost Angel' is an ultra-deep affair whose spacey chords seem to stretch out eternity.

A Race Of Angels - "Just Begin"
Akwasi Mensah, Dego, Theo Parrish - "It's Just Begun"
Review: All has been quiet at Wildheart Recordings since label founders Theo Parrish and Tony Allen inaugurated proceedings with the soulful double drop of Day Like This, which is understandable given their respective touring schedules. Out of nowhere a second release arrives and finds Wildheart looking back but still being forward thinking with a timely reappraisal of a West Coast gem from A Race Of Angels. The recording alias of Yeofi Andoh, A Race of Angels will be familiar to Gifted & Blessed fans for their Steoples work together and his fragile vocal talents is on full display with "Just Begin". Initially released as part of the ArtDontSleep Presents... From L.A. With Love compilation back in 2007, "Just Begin" is a classy slice of minimal songwriting and gets further blessed by a B Side rework featuring the collective talents of Theo, Dego and Akwasi Mensah.

Review: This second studio hook-up between Detroit veterans Theo Parrish and Marcellus Pittman first appeared way back in 2002, some three years after they made their collaborative debut on Sound Signature. Listening again all these years on, we can confirm that the three-tracker hasn't aged a bit. Check, for example, epic A-side "Evidence Of The 5th Green Foot", a near 12-minute, ultra-deep workout built around rich bass, lo-fi electric piano motifs and swinging, jazz-fired house beats. Elsewhere, "Equality Of Patience" is a deliciously druggy and heavily percussive peak-time throb-job, while "Questions Comments" is the kind of spaced-out, drum machine driven deep house box jam that both producers do so well.

Review: Theo Parrish's long out-of-print debut album, First Floor, has become something of a must-have for collectors. Originally released in two parts way back in 1998 by legendary UK label Peacefrog, it contains some of the Detroit-based producer's finest work. This second installment is packed with highlights, including the loose, loopy deep house funk of "Electric Alleycat", the ultra-deep, Nina Simone sampling haziness of "Sky Walking", and the superb, Moodymann-does-Chicago Acid shuffle of "Heal Yourself & More". It also contains the thrilling "JB's Edit", a dusty, loopy cut-up of an old James Brown tune with tried-and-tested party-starting credentials.

Just1lovebug
Review: With Theodopolus Parrish Month in full swing just as the Christmas chaos begins it's a neat little coincidence that this heavily prized one sided twelve inch for Dope Jams should arrive on clear red vinyl. "Just1LoveBug" is an exercise in simplicity from the Sound Signature don, slipping the accapella from Amerie's "One Thing" over the demented Chicago house flex of Lil Louis' "Nyce & Slo (The Love Bug)" from all the way back in 1990. Just the right side of outright formaggio and destined to be dropped by many a DJ on NYE.

Review: During its lifespan, sadly departed London club Plastic People had it all: an intimate space to dance, an astonishingly good audiophile sound system, and a crew of resident DJs that included the mighty Theo Parrish. The Detroiter's sets there, which ran for a minimum of six hours, have naturally become the stuff of legend. Three years after the club closed, Parrish has decided to release the recording of his final set there - a thrillingly free-wheeling, three-disc voyage that dizzily and gleefully joins the dots between jazz, soul, disco, funk, deep house, acid, techno and much more besides. The three discs capture Parrish at his most lively and esoteric, providing a musical journey that will delight dancers and armchair listeners alike.
