Just A Little
Just A Little (yellow vinyl 12")
Cat: MEK 001. Rel: 16 Nov 23

Drum & Bass / Jungle
Just A Little (Mellow mix) (4:59)
Just A Little (Stink mix) (5:32)
Review: M-Beat's Marlon Hart contributed massively to the development of breakbeat hardcore in those breakthrough early 90s years, and it's no wonder his seminal tunes are getting reissued now. There's a lot to choose from, and the Mekatune label is here to do some sifting and bring the best joints back in reach away from the second hand scalpers. 'Just A Little' came out in 1993, and it's absolutely deadly whether you reach for the Mellow Mix or the Stink Mix. The rugged breaks chops and weighty subs are utterly addictive, while the snatches of techy synth flair, Jamaican toasting and helium divas are an instant gateway to the best the era had to offer. Seminal stuff sounding the best it ever has with a fresh remaster.

Projection Palace (Night Terrors mix)
Review: Following her awesome Sneaker Social EP earlier this year, Amsterdam rave queen Yorobi returns with another wonderfully wide-armed collection on her own label On My Own Terms. Entitled 'Projection Palace', the title track undergoes two renditions; the Blue Lines-era Massive Attack inspired Reflections mix and the much heavier junglised Night Terrors mix. In between we have two other beguiling bumpers - 'Mico Aggressions' is a brain rattling electroid buzz fest while 'OIC' takes us on an abrasive trip up and down the hardcore continuum. All four grooves are exceptional.

Review: Building on more than 20 years in the game, recent times have seen London-based junglist Opius exploring album formats and deeper strains within d&b and jungle on labels like Silent Force, Time Tunnel and his own Ballpark. Now he arrives on AGN7 Audio with a blistering exercise in experimental d&b that takes a broader look at what a breakbeat can be. The emphasis here is on jazz, as blasts of post bop drumming get sliced and diced into head-rushing constructions that feel as fresh as the first time you heard someone getting busy with an amen.

Qeta - "Redawn" (4:27)
Inkipak - "Plex" (6:06)
Inkipak - "Schedule" (6:44)
Inkipak - "Wetlands" (3:23)
Review: Coming to Sound Synthesis' very own imprint, Wave Function, producers Qeta and Inkipak go head-to-head on this incredible new six-tracker, in a rare contemporary example of a "versus" record. Qeta's approach to production makes more sense when we bear his prior explorations in jungle under the name The Jaffa Kid, in mind; helming up the first three tracks that make up the A-side's corpus, the likes of 'Idream' and 'Corpus' reveal a preference for precision, taken to increasingly bloopy, novel and spacious logical conclusions. Inkipak's rebuttal is to resort to cascading breaks blissouts, preferring a more euphoric arsenal made up of ethereal vocals and trilling arps, of which 'Schedule' is the highlight.

Stop (4:29)
Review: Sully's Uncertain Hour label teased us with a couple of drops in 2019, and following hot on the heels of a link up with Tim Reaper he's back to it in 2023 with a fourth transmission which affirms his place at the forefront of jungle innovation. 'Extant' is a frenzied masterpiece with epic narrative pauses to shut the dance down and explosive resolutions that serve as a stern reminder no one can mess with the jungle formula like this guy. It's classic and groundbreaking in the same breath - he'll even drop an 808 cowbell in a way you've never heard before. 'Stop' on the flip is just as mind-flaying, bringing a frankly staggering level of drum programming to the table.

Review: Vromm is back on the Over/Shadow label with a new EP of spaced out and cosmic electronic energy. 'Molecular' is a restless mix of breaks and jungle effects, lots of squelchy sonic details and off-grid hits. 'Prism' is a moody and stripped back one with a minimal rhythm but plenty of gliding synth tension in the air then Kid Drama steps up to flip the opening cut into a rolling stomper with big horns. 'Zoom' closes out with more shiny metal surfaces, distant buzz saws and glistening melodies over a loose, jumbled rhythm.

Toby Tobias - "On My Mind" (Freak mix) (5:27)
Shy One - "Uncle G" (4:33)
Kieran Jandu - "From My Soul" (6:15)
Review: London wax institution Phonica continue to celebrate their 20th anniversary as a label in deep-digging, highly eclectic style. This fourth sampler continues to hint at a much larger VA album with a wide range of sounds across the techno/jungle axis. Tim Reaper & Comfort Zone get us in the groove with the savage drum funk of 'Subterranean' while Toby Tobias eases down the tempo and takes us to some mystical places on the Balearic-on-Mars funk of 'On My Mind'. Meanwhile on the flip Shy One goes full-on Co-Op / Bugz vibes with its sparse broken beat jazziness while Orphic's Kieran Jandu closes the EP on a bumping early 90s-inspired techno roll-out. Happy anniversary Phonica.

Scope Of Understanding (5:44)
Self Reflection (5:38)
Review: Offering another foursome of new tracks for Spatial Recordings comes Eusebeia with 'Age Of Awareness', charting a new topology of human understanding via the archetypal throughline that is drum & bass. Perhaps Eusebeia is aware that Apollo's son was the god of healing and remedies: A-sider 'Healing Properties' shoots for jungle of the least abrasive kind, lowpassing the breaks to allow a thick cloud of pads and synths, which dance about the mix. Also helping to cement Eusebeia's renaissance in sound is 'Scope Of Understanding', which clarifies the Overton window for a new sonic age; keeping to sampled-breaks orthodoxy but nonetheless pushing for a full reformation in breaks and ambience, blowing any and all potential competition out the park when it comes to sound design and sense of cosmic space.

F**K Off With Your Horoscopes (6:21)
Black Sky (5:54)
Review: Eddy Kennedy's output as Kessler is on a relentless rise as he leaps from knockout releases on Club Glow, Shall Not Fade and Holding Hands to this masterpiece on Elicit. 'Lunar' is true to the space-tipped title as Kessler takes breakbeat science into glitchy, epic territory guided by broad synth strokes to wind up more aligned to Squarepusher at his most reflective. 'Hiyah' is a ruffer concern with snarling bass and a more linear focus towards warehouse-quaking rave pressure. 'FK Off With Your Horoscopes' might well take aim at spirituality, but there's something meditative and reflective about the melodic content and subtly sculpted beats coursing their way through this modern slice of uptempo electronica.

Review: This classic set from the one and only The Rootsman takes us back to 1999 but has been newly edited and reimagined for this release on Partial. It was originally released on the Third Eye Music Label in 1999 and still hits hard today. There are jungle overtones to the opener 'We Come Rough' which brings the energy to kick off before things sink into a much more heady and psyched-out dub on 'Exodus'. 'To The Foundation' has a jazzy broken beat energy to it and 'Murder On The Orient Express' brings prance percussion and laid-back rhythms. 'Berber Bashment' is the standout on the B-side with its weird and wonderful vocal effects.

The chart topping duo knows a thing or two about crafting big bangers and massive anthems and that's what they do here as they follow up their last album What Came Before with more massive moments. Plenty of guests help them along the way here such as IRah & Flowdan & Trigga & Takura on the massive 'Baddadan' and Avo & Horrid1 on 'On The Block', a collar with Mosey which is also devastatingly large.

Review: All hail King Krust, a true totem of d&b innovation from his earliest days right up to the present moment. The Irrational Numbers series on Wonder Palace is doing a sterling job of combing back through his monumental legacy as a key protagonist in the Bristol-rooted Full Cycle crew and there's so much heat a third double-LP volume doesn't feel anything close to excessive. On this edition we're getting treated to unbelievable workouts like his Gang Related production 'Rukus' and the widescreen scope of 'The Resister', a staggeringly visionary slice of hi-tech soul from 1993. There's just so much invention and expression on here, rightly confirming Krust's place in the d&b hall of fame.

Selectors On Rotation
Graveyard Slot
Review: Fracture is doing an incredible job drawing on the legacy of pirate radio as inspiration for his productions on the 0860 project. Beyond the hotly tipped mixtape comes this latest 12", featuring different shades of breakbeat pressure tooled to perfection by a truly dedicated head. 'All Of The Massive' was a stand out from said mixtape, and it's now available in all its glory, hard-edged and bleep loaded, primed to rinse any system you care to mention. 'What A Rush' is a smoother roller featuring MC Freddie Sup on lightly sprinkled toasting duties, while 'Selectors On Rotation' pays tribute to the role of adverts on the pirates in the framework of a nasty roller splashed with dub siren licks. 'Graveyard Slot' completes the release with a deeper cut in tribute to the early AM slots when the pirates would showcase more experimental sounds.

Mima's Room (5:35)
After Hours (6:07)
Review: Overlook continues to bolster UVB-76's position as one of the front-runners in junglist innovation with this latest single. There's many sides to the Bournemouth producer's sound, as 'Mima's Room' guides us through deft breakbeat interplay, hazy jazz samples and fathoms deep atmospherics and pads which somehow sidestep the usual Good Looking reference points to head somewhere else. It's mellow and meditative, but speaking it's own truth thanks to Overlook's precise and potent production style. By way of contrast, 'After Hours' is a rasping D&B variation shrouded in nihilistic tones and powered by hard edged drums. It's a split personality of a record, and that makes it all the more exciting.

Atomic (3:38)
Review: On Tell Me, Skeptical capitalises on the freedom afforded by his own Rubi label by dialling back his established d&b sound and presenting a half-time trip into downtempo territory. That shouldn't be mistaken as a softening of his production chops, because there's still massive amounts of weight as he warps snarling bass around stark drums on 'Tapestry'. 'Atomic' goes further into a minimal, dubbed out sound with carefully executed low end growl which carries the torch from DMZ's earliest soundsystem meditations.

Review: The Paper Cuts label has been doing a fine job in putting out head-tripping club and chill-out styles for a fair stretch now and following the Ivy mixtape released earlier this year they're back with this outstanding split release from Roza Terenzi and Furious Frank. Terenzi takes the A-side with her trademark line in electro-minded machine funk rhythms powering gorgeous back room moods, keeping the mix dubby and with plenty of ambient sparkle on top of the punchy drums. There's even space for a little d&b trippiness on 'Total Recall', which also features Noff. Furious Frank gets busy on the flip with 'Splash', a blissed out beatdowns with more than a little Balearic magic in its bones, while 'Moss Rock' turns the heat up for a distinctly 90s slice of acid trance. 'Dripp' seals the deal with another low slung roller from the chill-out room of your dreams.

Barbitura - "One In The Jungle"
Review: DanJet proclaims itself to be the first Russian drum & bass label, which might be up for debate, but at the very least it would have been one of the first when it first operated in 1997. Spearheaded by DJ Dan, the label drops its fourth vinyl and chooses to, erm, pay tribute to The Prodigy on the A-side via Dan and Dima Pulsar's 'Hyperspeed'. There are more than a few elements from Experience twisted into modern d&b forms on this track, no doubt sure to please older heads and younger generations of ravers alike. Barbitura's 'One In The Jungle' on the B-side is an all-out tear-out driven by sirens, dark side bass and blistering breaks.

Vinyl Junkie - "Rudegal Dem"
Radiokillaz - "Time Again"
Review: Vinyl Junkie catapults a brand new label into the universe and his intention is loud and clear - Badass authentic jungle craftsmanship for the ages. He's rolling neck deep with kindred soldiers; Radiokillaz and Fleck get wild on the breaks on 'Lakes On Saturn', Riffz dusts off the detuned rave stabs for that aggy hardcore flavour while VJ himself whips up some delightful breakbeat switchery that melts into a dubwise breakdown for momentary respite. Radiokillaz close down the EP with a touch of soul on 'Time Again', a poignant space jazz joint laced with mournful strings and a yearning vocal. Meltdown.

Where It Begins
Review: Rejoice! Technimatic return with their fourth studio album For All Of Us and it's another stunning immersive trip into some drum & bass's most musical and soulful corners. Always keeping the perfect balance between dreamy and dancefloor, flavours range from the mischievous rave twists of 'Coming Back' to the hazy halftime swoons of 'You Call Me' by way of rich DRS-fronted soul ('Risk Everything') and rattling feel-good Creative Source style liquid ('Moment To Moment') With less featured vocalists and more focus on timeless drum & bass vibes that they first made themselves known with, this is arguably one of Technimatic's best albums to date.

Phonetics (7:04)
Changing Times (6:32)
Review: There's just no stopping Tim Reaper, the most prolific and powerful force in modern jungle. He's gracing the first release on new Samurai sub label Mindgames, which is a love letter to the emergent jungle sound which first seduced label founder Presha back in the mid 90s. It's a field Reaper is more than adept at navigating and he does so in spectacular fashion on this record, leading in with the synth-charged uplift of 'Phonetics' as sweet and savage energies collide in powerful fashion. 'Changing Times' is a deeper cut which toys with atmospheric touches and dislocated subs, making for the kind of adventurous excursion jungle has embodied from the get-go.

Hidden (Donato Dozzy remix) (6:22)
Tensor (Reeko remix) (6:14)
Review: Enigmatic fusionist Last Life returns to the mighty Samurai in remix form as the label commence the roll-out of remixes. First up is fellow Italian Denato Dozzy who flips 'Hidden' into an all-out techno stamp-out with a relentless build-up while Reeko takes this year's single 'Tensor' and pressurizes it into a rolling tech hybrid that's laced with swathes of haunted amens. Heavyweight schematics.

Review: Anyone who avidly follows Dominick Martin's output as Calibre knows the man is insanely prolific. When you get past the sheer volume of his released work, there's also the oceans of unreleased exclusives from his sets throughout a monumental career, which is where the Shelflife series comes in. As you can tell by the triple-vinyl heft of this eighth entry in the series, the man is sat on an incredible amount of heat. Running the gamut from soul-soaked uplifters to atmospheric dreamers and on to sharp-angled, techy monsters, this is Calibre quality through and through.
