Take U There
Take U There (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: MYOR 25. Rel: 05 Oct 23
UK Garage
Take U There (5:28)
Our Eyes Betray (4:13)
Review: MYOR hits a quarter of a century here with a delicious slice of deep house and garage from Chavinski. A-side jam 'Take U There' has an old school feel with the dark, humid bass drill gin down deep, but the r&b vocal is utterly fresh and contemporary, as are the pixelated synths which add texture and more heat to this heart-felt late-night roller. On the flip is another shady garage jam rooted in the OG sound with its dusty breakbeats and muffled but cavernous bass. Again the vocal is sweet as sugar, a lush r&b and new soul viber that brings real emotion.

Review: Our love for Coco Bryce is well-documented on these pages. To get news of a new album from the legendary Dutch drum & bass producer, then, is, well, music to our ears. Computer Love is a double pack on his own label MYOR that explores downtempo sonic landscapes, deep drum & bass and occasional forays into UKG and breakbeat. It's a kaleidoscopic listen with meticulous craft in each tune and overflowing with fresh melodic ideas as well as his famous smart samples. Previously released singles 'Night Safari' and 'Trust Issues' are standouts amongst a slew of other more left-of-centre sounds.

Review: There's just no stopping Coco Bryce, who casually drops his third LP of the year on MYOR like it's no big deal. As low-slung opener 'High Commander' demonstrates, this isn't a one-trick jungle dump, but an album proper with nooks and crannies to get lost in. There are of course plenty of dazzling breakbeat excursions to savour - this is Coco Bryce after all - but even then his style has a refreshing, dynamic quality which makes for listening music as much as shockout juice. The low tempo beatdowns are just as incredible, full of vibe and bursting with inspiration, proving, as we already said, there is NO stopping our bredda in Breda.

City Pop
Cat: MYOR 27. Rel: 14 Jun 24
Drum & Bass / Jungle
Slow Motion
Light Works
Running Away Towards Me
Idle Minds
I M 4 U
You're Mine
Blow Me Over
Review: A shrewd business move from Coco Bryce? The underground drum & bass lodestar has named his latest full-length record after the Japanese pop genre, between which there appears to be no relation. We're left to wonder whether it's purely a coincidence, save for the fact that the latter's popularity makes it seem like less of one. Whatever the case, the mood of Coco's latest record errs less on bangers and more mash, completely sidestepping the apparent need for most producers working mainly in realm of singles and EPs to suddenly play up to a concept when it comes to making an LP. No; from 'Slow Motion' to 'Blow Me Over', City Pop is muted, revelling in the joy of pure breaks science and soft chordal experimentation. The extra tasteful sample-work of 'Idle Minds' and blooping minimalisms of 'Your Mine' go on to testify that this is a subtle listen, perhaps one that only an artist at the height of their career can indulge, after all the points have been proven and statements made.

Angels (white vinyl 12")
Cat: MYGOD 02. Rel: 20 Jul 23
Drum & Bass / Jungle
Angels (6:29)
Birdfeed (6:27)
Review: Coco Bryce's Myor does the damage once again with new artist Pepe. Not a lot of information on Pepe is out there yet but these timeless beats give you more than enough to go on for now: 'Angels' writhes and weaves in a stark percussive ocean of ice before building up into a huge emotional wave in a similar way to Sully when he's jangling his foxiest materials. 'Birdfeed' is a little more sprightly and sun-kissed. Dreamier pads, lighter percussion but still bites hard when it needs to. Le phew!
