Activated by an easy-to-use analogue sequencer, DFAM's emotive sound begins with a white noise generator and two wide-range analogue oscillators - effortlessly transitioning between rhythmic pulsations, resounding bass and resonant bells in an instant. Notes: Module A-198 is a Trautonium Manual resp. Ribbon Controller. The controlling element of the A-198 is a linear position sensor (length about 50 cm) that has available a pressure sensor too.

Touching the sensor with a finger generates a control voltage CV1 that is proportional to the position of the finger. The scale (i.e. the relation between position difference and voltage difference) is adjustable with a potentiometer at the front panel. A hold switch is used to determine if the CV voltage is held after removing the finger (hold = on) or if the CV voltage jumps to 0V (hold = off). In the last case (hold = off) a gate signal is derived from the CV voltage whenever a finger touches the sensor (e.g. for triggering an envelope generator).

A sensitive pressure sensor located below the position sensor generates a second control voltage CV2 that increases with higher pressure of the finger. Even for CV2 the scale is adjustable. A second gate signal is triggered as soon as the pressure exceeds a certain value. The gate threshold is adjustable at the front panel.

The sensors are located in a separate metal frame (length about 600 mm, width about 30 mm, height about 18 mm, weight: about 900 g, colour: silver-grey). The connection between the module and the sensor frame is made by a 4 pin cable (same as used for USB connections).

Typical applications:

- Trautonium manual, the string is replaced by the position sensor that is much easier to use and cheaper than the string. In combination with the Subharmonic Oscillator A-113, the Trautonium Filter A-104 and some auxiliary modules a complete Trautonium replica may be realized. In combination with the Quantizer A-156 exact semitone intervals are possible.

- Ribbon Controller for any A-100 parameter

Notes: A Low Pass Gate (LPG) can be a low pass filter, a VCA or a combination of both. This means both the harmonic content and volume can be controlled simultaneously which resembles the behaviour of many instruments: the louder, the more harmonics.

The A-101-2's mode of operation is set with a switch: left position is low pass, right is VCA and the combo mode is in the centre. Alternatively, you can activate the modes with gate signals which is the reason for two gate inputs; this is very interesting in combination with clock dividers or trigger sequencers.

The A-101-2 has an aggressive sound, compared to other LPGs and its resonance goes up to self-oscillation which not many LPGs offer. The oscillation is rather dirty and far from being a sine wave.

Pulsar-23 is a multi-functional analog synthesizer and generator of complex rhythmic patterns.

The Pulsar consists of 23 different modules, including four flexible sound generators with completely different structures, four envelope generators, four looper-recorders, a clock generator with dividers, a controlled chaos generator, an LFO, a two-channel CV-controlled effects processor, distortion, two controlled amplifiers, an inverter, a controlled inverter and two controlled analog switches. In addition to these 23 main units, the Pulsar also contains 13 auxiliary units, such as a four-channel MIDI to CV converter, a noise generator, four attenuators, two dynamic CV generators with sensory control, two impulse converters and single passive electronic components for live circuit bending.

Pulsar-23 can be used for the synthesis of percussion instruments and rhythms, bass and melodic lines, effects and sound landscapes, as well as a source of control voltage. The Pulsar functions in three different modes: stand-alone, MIDI control and CV control. Moreover, all the above features and control modes can work simultaneously in any proportion or combination. Additionally, Pulsar offers live circuit bending capabilities and the use of the artist's body conductivity to create patches and cross modulations.

Pulsar continues the line of organismic synthesizers begun by LYRA-8, but now in the area of percussion instruments.

Notes: Module A-121s is a dual multimode filter which can be used for stereo applications as well as for parallel or serial organized dual mono filters. The core is a 12dB multimode filter identical to the modules A-121-2 and A-121-3. The selection of the filter type is continuously from lowpass via notch and highpass to bandpass. We attached great importance to the usability of the manual controls and CV inputs for both stereo and dual mono applications. If the filters do not behave as expected please pay attention to these peculiarities:

For the controls SFM1, SFM2, CFM, Delta F and Delta FM the centre position is the neutral position as these are polarizers. If the filter behaves unexpected these controls should be set to centre positions for the time being.

For the controls F, Q, Level 1, Level 2, QM/TM1 und QM/TM2 the fully CCW position is the neutral position as these are standard attenuators. If the filter behaves unexpected at least the controls QM/TM1 and QM/TM2 should be set to fully CCW. Via the normalling of the sockets QM/TM1 and QM/TM2 and the associated controls the filter parameters adjusted by the major controls (e.g. Type 1, Type 2 or Q) may be overwritten.

By means of small circles at the bottom right side of the front panel the user can mark the function of the QM/TM inputs. These assignments are possible:
QM/TM1 controls QM1, QM/TM2 controls QM2, the filter types are not controlled by external CVs
QM/TM1 controls TM1, QM/TM2 controls TM2, the resonances are not controlled by external CVs

Review: You can always count on Depeche Mode to do things differently. Never content to play it safe despite their position as a global superstars, as the 80s turned into the 90s they collaborated with celebrated filmmaker Anton Corbijn on the music videos from their albums Music For The Masses and Violator. The first set were gathered together at Strange in 1988, with the follow-up released as Strange Too in 1990. In between the music videos for megahits like ‘Personal Jesus’ and ‘Enjoy The Silence’ were additional vignettes and incidentals, all filmed by Corbijn on his trusty Super 8, and the end results have become synonymous with the Mode’s visual aesthetic. Now both films have been gathered together in one handy Blu Ray package, digitally remastered without losing that all-important grainy finish.

Notes: The Tiptop Audio Buchla Model 296t is a 16 band spectral resonator & vocoder based on the original Buchla 296.

The 296 was first introduced in 1978 and very few were ever made. Making a module of such complexity at a time when electronic schematics were drawn with pencils, with 48 filters that were most likely hand-calculated is just incredible.

The 70's were a great era of exploration and proof of audio electronics scientific theories, but for Don Buchla it seems like it was always something beyond theory.

The 296 might at first look like an equalizer, but Don Buchla had totally different ideas for it. He managed to pack into it a 16-band analogue modular spectral processor, a cross-band vocoder, plus a massive amount of patch points to work with his synthesizer system.

Notes: Tiptop Audio's Z-DSP is a cartridge-based open source digital sound processing and effects generating platform for your modular synthesizer. Lush audio processing, greater stereo depth and a unique set of digital synthesis is what the Z-DSP is all about.

The Z-DSP has a stereo digital sound processor with 24-bit sampling, 15kHz of bandwidth, voltage-controlled parameters of stereo feedback, program switching, DSP parameters, equal power crossfading dry/wet mixing, as well as sequential program control switching and a clear display - all in Eurorack format. A dedicated clocking input for the DSP chip does wonders to passing sound by bending the algorithms in an unexpected way, a hardware technique computer plugins can't do and is unique to the Z-DSP.

In a recent update, the Z-DSP (NS) got an all new design of its analogue circuitry, contributing to a lower noise signal path, clearer sound of the entire frequency range, lower distortion and better immunity to noise emitted by other modules sharing the same power supply. A new analogue dry/wet circuit has been implemented to remove the 3db gain drop when the mix knob passes through the centre of the dial making the use of this function more practical in a live application. A reverse polarity protection has been added as well. The new front-panel matches Tiptop's colourful design, and a single printed circuit board and surface mount technology improve reliability during production and use. The powerful Z-DSP engine remains the same as the original Z-DSP module and all cards are compatible across both versions.

TERRA is a highly conceptual device. The core idea is unity of nature and technology, and a perfect balance between simplicity and versatility. Behind the extremely simple interface hides a complex polyphonic, microtonal synthesizer with a broad and flexible sound palette that ranges from classical beautiful tones to complex atonal noise, and offers smooth and fast transitions between these extremes.

The innovative keyboard design invites new playing techniques and covers the full range of a grand piano with the possibility to tune each note with an accuracy of 125 steps per semitone. To achieve this range with such a simple keyboard we designed a unique system of pitch shifting using four additional sensors. Pressing different combinations of them will result in 16 variations of keyboard transposing, including up to 3 octaves up and down, fifth, fourth, third, tone etc.

Not only do you get the full range of a grand piano in a very compact design, TERRA also offers an entirely new and different approach to playing melodies and chords.

The keyboard consists of 12-note sensors with velocity and pressure sensitivity allowing for the manual creation of slow attack and vibrato, 4 dynamic sensors for timbre modification and control, 4 pitch-shifting sensors and 2 hold sensors for holding the state of the timbre and note sensors.

Inside TERRA there is a three-axis motion sensor for creating a variety of different modulations by simple intuitive movements of your hands and body.

TERRA is digital and contains 32 complex synthesis algorithms. Each algorithm has been carefully designed to be a complete and flexible musical instrument on its own, ready for learning and playing in its own unique way. The goal is to free the musician from long exhausting programming, setting hundreds of parameters for creating one timbre, and instead putting the focus directly on music and performance and following your imagination and inspiration.

TERRA offers the best of both worlds: the direct intuitive tactile connection from acoustic instruments and the flexibility and versatility of synthesizers. TERRA inherits design principles from LYRA-8 and also contains application of the new principles that were announced for ReFLEX, exploring the future of synthesis.

TERRA has an extremely simple interface that gives you instant access to all its functions in several touches, including saving and loading the 96 presets that are stored directly on the playing sensors. TERRA has no display. Instead it shows and lets you dial all necessary data on the 6 LED-sensor triangle in the centre.

TERRA has a built-in FX processor so the stereo output is ready to use, making it a perfect stand-alone performance instrument. Notes: The Grand Terminal is a digital multipurpose module. Its two function generators can be used as envelopes, LFOs or VCOs. The 2 filter channels individually offer 8 modes of operation, and combined with its mixing and routing capabilities and a multi effects unit, it is not only a complete back end of a synth voice, but can also be used as a synthesizer voice, stereo filter bank or general purpose sound effects processor.

The Grand Terminal is based on an ARM M4 DSP, audio resolution 48 kHz/16Bit. Its two filter channels can be used in parallel or serial, and there is a link mode for stereo operation. The Audio inputs have individual trimmable gain stages to integrate the Grand Terminal into different production environments. There's a soft clipping feature in order to prevent unwanted distortion. Gate A is normalized to Gate B for easy parallel processing.

Each of the filters can be set to any of 8 filter types, which are: Transistor Ladder Filter (Low Pass), Diode Ladder Filter (Low Pass), Vactrol Low-Pass Gate, Resonant Vactrol Low-Pass Gate, State Variable Low-Pass Filter, State Variable High-Pass Filter, State Variable Band-Pass Filter, Comb Filter. The filter can be controlled in 2 parameters manually as well as via CV. The outputs of this section can also be controlled in Volume and Pan position. At this stage, the unit is designed to distort in the upper third of the gain control setting.

The built-in multi effects processor features eight algorithms which can be altered in 2 crucial parameters and a possibility to crossfade between the dry and the effected signal. Its algorithms are: Hall Reverb, Shimmer Reverb, Room Reverb, Spring Reverb, Ping-Pong Delay, Tape Delay and Chorus. At the end of the audio path, there's a Master Volume Control as well as one Mono and one Stereo output.

The two function generators can operate as AD or AR envelopes. All time parameters can be set between 1 ms and 10 seconds, manually as well as via CV. The envelopes can be individually set to loop and then act as LFOs or VCOs (following V/Oct for about 6,5 octaves). They also feature End-of-Stage Outputs.

When used in connection to the Gateway, all controls which are normally set by jumpers on the back of the module are accessible from the Gateway's front panel.

Offset Magic
Along with reproducing the SDE-3000's famous mono sound, the SDE-3 includes a powerful Offset feature to create interesting tones with two simultaneous delays. With one simple control, you can instantly add a second delay to the primary delay for a wealth of mono and stereo colours.

Doubled Delays-Turning the Offset knob up to its centre position introduces a second delay that's 1-100ms longer than the primary delay. For example, if the primary delay is 400ms and the Offset is 10ms, the second delay's time is 410ms. Coupled with the SDE-3's time, feedback, and highly adjustable modulation controls, you can craft deep delay tones unavailable with typical delay pedals.

Timed Dual Delays-In the second half of its range, the Offset knob produces a shorter second delay that's based on the primary delay time. Use the pedal's tap tempo function to determine the quarter-note value for the primary delay. Next, turn the knob to sweep the second delay's time between eighth-note and dotted-eighth subdivisions. This lets you introduce a variety of rhythmic effects that sync with your music.

Multiple Output Modes
The versatile SDE-3 provides output configurations for any stage or studio scenario. Run it in mono for basic setups. Play in true stereo with discrete left/right delays or a panning mode for ultra-wide sounds that move across the stereo field. Send dry and direct feeds to two amps for wet/dry setups. Or mute the direct sound entirely for studio mixing and parallel effect rigs.

Modern Workflow
The SDE-3 offers numerous control options to enhance your performances. Press and hold the pedal switch to enable the tap tempo function. Or use the TRS MIDI input to receive clock sync signals from DAWs, pedals, and drum machines. Notes: The Control Voltage Processor from Verbos Electronics GmbH is a suite of control voltage processing possibilities divided into 3 sections in a slim 18HP package. The lower 2 sections are DC coupled mixers that allow mixing, inverting, offsetting, scaling, multiplying, dividing, crossfading or a combination of these functions. The top section is a voltage controlled slewing processor with independent control of Positive and Negative slew rate, with some unique tricks. The Positive and Negative slew, or Rise and Fall rates if you like, have reversing attenuators. The slopes can be blended from linear to RC curves (starting all slides fast and ending slow, like a proper "East Coast" Portamento) without a change in speed. It can be triggered like an AD envelope and has a Gate out that goes high when the CV out is below 100mV. Of course it can loop by patching the Gate out to the Trigger in. The Bounce control adds a unique flare of overshoot to CV changes, a bit like the effect of stopping a tape reel from turning and then letting it go. The combination of multiple voltage processors offers the user the functions of analogue computer.

Notes: The Stereo Mixer 1U provides a convenient way to combine your mono and stereo sources into a single stereo mix. There is level control over the first two channels and, using a rear connector, you can chain multiple Stereo Mixer 1U's together into a hidden 3rd stereo channel without using up channels on the front panel. The chain i/o connectors are fully compatible with the Mixup connectors so you are able to mix 1U and 3U mix chains together as needed.

The Stereo Mixer 1U is a versatile, expandable audio mixer for the Intellijel 1U format. It has two pairs of front panel inputs, each with its own level control, and a mixed output pair. For each input pair, the left channel is normalled to the right channel, for mono operation.

Using 3-pin Link connectors on the back panel, you can chain multiple Stereo Mix 1U's together in series, giving you the ability to mix together even more inputs, or to create sub-mixes for routing audio around larger systems. The two different kit choices will supply you with parts for10 single touch points or 5 touchable shorting bars plus 5 touch points. Similar to AllFlesh, these touch points will attenuate voltages through the skin. Each person's skin will have a different amount of attenuation over voltage. Using one hand to touch two points is less attenuation than using two hands to bridge connection. Different modules and systems will also respond differently to touch patching. Results are guaranteed to vary between person to person and system to system.

Soldering along the edges of where the plug meets the plate can be helpful for increased continuity. The tips of the plugs have a collar that can spin around it (egg beater like shape pictured above), if you would like to decrease the touch plate's ability to move from side to side add a small amount of solder to the tip bridging the gap between the spinning collar and tip.
