Review: 100% Pure Poison were formed in 1974 by nine American soldiers based in West Germany. During a period of leave, they popped down to Cannes in France to perform, were spotted by EMI Records, and were flown to London to record what turned out to be their only album, Coming Right At You. The record flopped at the time, but has since become sought-after amongst Northern Soul collectors. The two tracks here are taken from that set, and appear on 7" for the first time since the '70s. A-side "You Keep Coming Back" is a near perfect, heartfelt soul anthem- think eyes-closed vocals, sustained horns and Motown harmonies - while "My Little Someone" is a slower, more impassioned cut destined to soundtrack tender moments.

Review: The great thing about Emotional Rescue's deep dive into reggae and lovers rock is that the tracks they decide to press up are the ear-snagging curveballs that present something just a little bit to the left of purist, trad reggae. That's the case once again with 101 Band's 'Crazy Kind Of Feeling' - a curio from Haile Maskel released via his own, LA-based label Opulence (Sound). It's a hybrid kind of sound, sitting somewhere between boogie, island funk and roots, and it goes down very smoothly indeed. On this reissue, you get treated to the original 7" mix plus an alternative 'Dub Take 2' version which stretches out over an extended run time on the B-side.

The collective's self-titled debut album, which dropped earlier this year, is a genuine must-listen and offers a near perfect distillation of disco, soul and funk flavours of the 1970s. Review: The brilliantly entitled 1619 Bad Ass Band covered myriad different styles from mellow sound to furious funk on their superlative and self-titled debut long player back in 1976. Two of it's standout tunes now get pulled and pressed on this red hot 7" from P-Vine, complete with a flip-back sleeve. Review: Two producers "supplying listeners with a steady dose of flips on a regular basis", 20 Dolla Julio & Bombeardo distribute just that at street level, spicing up our 7" crates with four ratchet, crunk instrumental hip hop releases. 'Here We Go' melds overloaded trap with swung "go" samples and distorted edges, while 'Plaid - Champ' gets at organ-twanging swing and alien spaceship zaps, upping the wonk to higher proportions. Closing cuts 'Get The Fork Up' and 'Roc The Place' switch into dancehall and 90s gangsta boom bap. "If everybody's here then do it to it, cos there ain't nothing to it!" correctly goes the vocal sample. Smouldering stuff from the Californian duo.

Review: Fryers presents 'I Need You Girl' from The 3 Pieces. In the early 1970s, Detroit-born jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd moved away from his previous hard-bop jazz base and began to experiment with jazz fusion, jazz-funk, soul-jazz, and rhythm and blues. Teaming up with the Mizell Brothers, they produced 'Black Byrd', which was enormously successful and became Blue Note Records' highest-ever selling album. The Mizell Brothers followed up their success with more albums for Byrd: 'Places and Spaces', 'Steppin' Into Tomorrow' and 'Street Lady' were also big sellers, and have subsequently provided a rich source of samples for acid jazz artists such as Us3. Another Donald Byrd production was for The 3 Pieces, a vocal trio signed to Fantasy Records. Until now the their music has been confined to their 1975 album 'Vibes of Truth', so it's about time that someone took the two strongest tracks from their masterpiece and cut them onto a 45. Not only that but Fryers got hold of the master tapes and did a special transfer just for the 45. So now you have two of the most sublime '70s soul dancers on 7", sounding better than ever: rich soulful strings, crispy sharp drums and deep ranging bass. 1975 never sounded so good.

Review: The 3rd Generation Band hail from Ghana, recording only six tracks in their time together, all for the Essiebons label and now Mr Bongo reissue these two super rare tracks. The life affirming Afro Rhythm & Blues of "Because Of Money" was also featured on Soundway's Ghana Soundz compilation previously. It was compiled by Andrew Edwards. The band was formed in the late 70's by leader Rockson, a soldier at the time. The original record is extremely rare and this reissue is a replica 7", including the original picture paper sleeve that was carefully restored by Andrew Edwards. B side track "Obi Ye Saa Wui" is African style soul-funk, very influenced by James Brown.

Review: 45Trio is a Japanese jazz outfit comprised of Junichi Sunayama, Masahiko Kubo and Shingo Hirakawa that has been turning out fresh jams since 2013 including an album and several 45rpms. 'Saudade Vem Correndo' is a new funk and soul-infused jazz sound that arrives especially for Record Store Day 2023 on limited edition 7". The A-side original is a nice louche and late-night lounge groove with magical melodies and catchy samba rhythms. On the flip is a DJ Koco edit that brings a hip-hop vibe that reminds of the late great J Dilla.

New York City-based collective 79.5 is made up of seven musicians and singers and their gorgeous 'Terrorize My Heart' 45rpm reached some heart aching disco highs. Now it comes with in two new forms - the disco dub with its seductive drums and bass and airy, soulful vocal, and a remix from hip hop royalty Tall Black Guy. He deconstructs the tune and rebuilds it as a smoky, jazz tinged slow motion hip hop beat. The chords are warm and cuddly, the vocal is more meandering but still acts as the perfect icing on a delicious cake.

Review: Dynamite Cuts is one of the most apply named labels of them all. Once again here it brings the serious funk heat on a tidy 7" from The 9th Creation. Both of these super sexy killers are taken from the mega rare Bubble Gum album and it's not hard to see why it has become such a highly sought after record. The title tune is only just over two minute long but has steamy spoken word vocals with Moog funk bass. 'Rule Of Mind' is longer at over five minutes, and the way the keys shimmy into your affections and the lead sax brings the lustre is second to none. What an EP.

Review: It's been a weird summer for sure in 2020, but you can improve yours by a guaranteed 100% with the addition of this hard to fine and often expensive 1980 great. High Frequency was a disco offshoot of Aleem, a boogie-funk, r&b and dance music trio formed in New York City. "Summertime" is the sort of bristling and infectious disco cut even the stony hearted can enjoy. The funky bassline, the feel good vocals, the lush chords - it's a real pearl of a track. The instrumental is just as feel good and uplifting. What a 7" this is.

They pioneered a breakbeat, cut-up and paste sounds 20 years ago that was high on energy and with plenty of character. Review: We're big fans of these educational 7"s that often crop up, with a legendary hip hop jam on one side and the source of some its samples appearing on the flip. This time out we get A Tribe Called Quest's deep cut 'Sucka N***a' - which is taken from their legendary Midnight Marauders album - with its buttery rhymes and funky bass buried deep within. Jack Wilkins's 'Red Clay' on the flip isn't that much of a deviation. Though it's slower and free from the rhymes, it is a brilliantly effective and emotive cut. More like this please.

Deliberately retro, but with one foot in the cosmic, Star Creature are a Chicago-based label whose take on space disco is extra janky and electronic. AVOP's new track 'Purple' is rattlesnaking and sultry, delving into a pitch-perfect rumination of a disco sound that 70's producers could only dream of achieving. Behind this project with the strange name (German for "eel-catch with horse-head") is one Mirko Uhlig from Germany, who had few CDR-releases so far, most of them standing out through their weird surrealistic coloration. In the meantime he's also built his own label Ex Ovo. "Fragment 36" relates to a quote from Heraclites showing that "everything deliquesces" at any moment and can never be the same as one moment before. According to that, Aalfang Mit Pferdekopf's first and last ever 7" creates two drone-minimal pieces with very high dynamics, using watersounds and Glockenspiel, drenched into overtune-feedback-resonances & dark deep drones.

Review: While many electronic artists operating in the underground would kick their catalogues off with some EPs here and there, Andy Brown, codename AB2088, preferred to drop two debut LPs before landing on Central Processing Unit with this mighty 10". Right from the start of "All The Eyes", you can hear that this dude likes to create music rather than effective tracks, with all sorts of deep and complex musical harmonies encircling the air above the tune's more straight-laced beat groove. Review: Italian label Dig This Way serves up a third sizzling offering, this time featuring Nigerian singer Peter Abdul. He does his heart aching work over a solid rhythm from Abeng's Musical Box and the results are steeped in romance and yearning. A flip side dub from Russ Disciple is also well worth checking for its smart effects and fathom deep bass. Abdul is a relative unknown but for his 1984 album Get Down With Me, which head in a more boogie and funk direction. Regardless, this is a tasty dub, make no mistake.

Review: There is very little info out there about the Milkcrate Mondays label but we do know that their only other release last year was well hyped and quickly sold out. This second one is likely to follow suit. It comes from Able and is a dusty house cut with an old school feel thanks to the gentle breaks that power it along as a signature smoky soul vocal from Amy Winehouse brings plenty of emotion to a-side cut 'Winehouse Magic'. The former kicks off by, says the label, "taking an Ocean classic for a trip to Miami." His take on 'Lost' is a funk-laced jam that blends r&b vocals with bubbling beats and jazzy keys into something brilliantly seductive. Review: Abelardo Carbono must be one of Colombia's most legendary artists, particularly for championing the sound of "champeta", a guitar-led style that has come to represent the South American country and its music. The Names You Can Trust imprint comes through with a glorious one-tracker by Carbono himself, alongside his 'Grupo' and, unsurprisingly, the masterful modern production of Quantic.
