Notes: Tune is a multi-scale pitch quantizer. It features 11 scales ranging from chromatic to octatonic with everything in between. In addition, the bias control allows the user to transpose the melody to a different octave or starting note.

This functionality opens up every musical mode for each of its 11 scales and provides a performable control for transforming melodies on the fly.

Notes: The Listen IO is a simple module which gets signals in and out of a Eurorack system by converting to and from normal modular levels. The top section converts any external signal to modular levels by providing up to 30x gain (+30dB), allowing you to use table-top synthesizers, keyboards, phones/tablets, computers, toys, microphones, etc. in your patches. The bottom section does the opposite: modular signals are converted to normal line level signals. The bottom two jacks can be used as line outs or as headphone jacks, so you and a friend can listen in stereo at the same time.

Each section has two inputs and outputs for use with a stereo signal or two mono signals. An LED bar graph for each output shows the signal level and clipping.

Notes: The hands-on control of hardware meets the versatility of software. Bridging the gap between Eurorack and VCV Rack, the MetaModule includes over 160 built-in modules plus access to over 200 third-party options.

The MetaModule comes with over 160 built-in modules from 4ms Company, Befaco, HetrickCV, NonlinearCircuits, and Scanner Darkly, plus clones of popular classics such as the Mutable Instruments eurorack modules, fun physical modeling algorithms, and lots of handy utilities.

All of the included modules are also available on the computer using the free program VCV Rack. Whether you make patches on VCV Rack and transfer them to the MetaModule, or if you just create patches directly on the MetaModule, there are plenty of creative modules to inspire new ways to make music.

MetaModule Plugins

If the 160+ built-in module aren't enough, you can load more modules as plugins. Already there are over 200 modules in third-party plugins from Bogaudio, Valley, ChowDSP, NANO Modular, and the list is growing. 4ms have an SDK available to make it easy for VCV Rack plugin developers to convert their plugin to a MetaModule plugin. 4ms' licensing terms are non-restrictive: developers are welcome to distribute their plugin in any way they wish, commercially or not.

Mapping Knobs and Jacks

The MetaModule has 12 knobs that can be mapped to virtual knobs. Each knob can be mapped to up eight virtual knobs, and each mapping can have a different range and offset. You also can save a group of mappings as a Knob Set and switch between Knob Sets with the encoder. You also can map the 8 inputs and 8 outputs to virtual module jacks. Also, the MetaModule is a USB MIDI host, so you also can map MIDI CC, note, gate, and other parameters to knobs and jacks.

Expanders

There are lots of ways to customize your MetaModule. A Wifi expander allows you to wirelessly transfer patches from your computer. Add eight more knobs with the Knob expander, or buttons with the Button expander. A CV/Audio expander adds more high-resolution inputs and outputs, and the Gate In/Out expander adds not only gate jacks but also TRS MIDI and I2C.

Under the Hood

There are six CV/Audio inputs, two gate inputs, and six CV/Audio outputs. The CV/Audio jacks are all 24-bit, 48kHz DC-coupled, -10V to +10V. A USB-C jack accepts MIDI devices and thumb drives. Patches and plugins can be loaded via a USB drive or microSD Card, and internal flash memory lets you save patches you always want to come back to.

The processor is more advanced than anything 4ms has used in the past, and is among the most powerful processors found in Eurorack. Startup time and latency are blazingly fast.

Notes: The WAV Recorder from 4ms Company is a high fidelity, two-channel stereo audio recorder with basic playback features. Accepting a wide range of input signals, from line-level to modular-level, the WAV Recorder stores audio onto a microSD card in lossless .wav format up to 96kHz/24-bit. The trigger jack can be used for capturing rhythmic loops or synchronizing multiple WAV Recorder modules for multi-track recording. In Playback mode, the trigger jack or button plays the most recent recording. A simple file/folder navigation system can be used to browse the folders on the card for playing back .wav files. Notes: ADDAC200RM allows a simple and straight forward way to monitor the voltage of your system. A 0.1% precision analogue voltage meter shows the status of both +12V and -12V rail.

Eurorack +/-12V power rails

Although we all refer to Eurorack PSU voltages as +12V and -12V this is hardly ever the case, although most systems operate at close proximity to this ideal reference, there are situations where the drop from the ideal voltage is large enough to influence the performance of your system.

PSU current ratings

Running a PSU too close to its limits will always cause more stress to the PSU, a good practice it to use only about 75% of your PSU maximum ratings, this will greatly extend the PSU life.

PSUs will show a small voltage drop as current increases which will drastically increase when pushed closed to it's limits. Heat will also influence this drop, heat is related to the current drawn, as more current is being drawn more heat will build up on the PSU, heat conditions will reduce the maxi- mum amount of current that can be delivered by the PSU. While the current consumption drop is somewhat stable and immediate (as you turn the frame on the current consumption will stabilize in a few seconds) the heat drop will take some time to occur, heat will build up over time until it stabilizes and only if it has "headroom" to stabilize. If heat dissipation is not effective than the drop will continue until it reaches a balance point which can be several volts below the 12V reference. At this point your PSU will be under great stress and the heat generated is prone to leave some permanent scars.

Heat will start to have an impact at about an ambient temperature of 50 degrees celsius, at 70 degrees the maxi- mum current rating will drop by 50%. If your PSU is rated at 2A maximum and it's running at 70 degrees then it will only be able to deliver 1A maximum.
For the PSU this is a complex balancing act as current influences heat and heat influences the maximum amount of current available which all together influences the voltage drop.

This is why it's so important to keep the PSU load at a sensible level.

PSU protections

Some PSUs feature over voltage, over current and overheating protection and will turn off when the operating conditions trigger any of the protection threshold levels.

At this point it's typical that the PSU will enter a Hiccup mode, where it turns on checks the current conditions and quickly turns off if they haven't changed, leaving it in an intermittent limbo where it powers on and off at some regular frequency.

If the conditions change enough to drop below the protection threshold levels then the PSU will automatically recover and stay on.

PSU stress

Different situations can be responsible for causing stress that can damage the PSU, it's possible to reverse a ribbon power cable enough times or leaving it connected long enough to partly damage the PSU.

Another situation is having a module that due to some partial previous damage may be drawing more current than specified which will not be accounted for when calculating your system current consumption.

Stress can cause permanent damage to the PSU, however some damages can be only partial leaving you with a PSU that no longer features the specs described by the manufacturer but with no apparent misbehaviour. The LED monitors on bus boards will be on, but in reality it will be underperforming at an unknown percentage of the original specs. These situations can be quite hard to debug without the proper tools to evaluate the cause of the problem.

PSU impact on modules

Some modules are more susceptible to PSU changes than others, modules that feature internal regulators will be less susceptible to PSU voltage, modules that use internal +5v, +/-9v, +/-10v regulators will have more tolerance than modules that use the PSU voltages directly like it is for most cases. Also modules that use voltage reverse protection will already have a 0.3v to 0.8v drop inherent to the protection circuit.

While many digital modules can withstand lower voltages some others will be more dependent on the reference voltage and may show strange behaviours.

This module can help preventing all these situations, it won't fix any problem but can help on the day-to-day monitoring of your system and in keeping your PSU in healthy conditions.

Notes: This is a revision 02 of ADDAC's Power Starvation module.

It provides an "ideal" way to power starve other modules, starving modules means the modules will receive less voltage than the standard +/-12V supply.

Power starvation is the first hack that any "DIY'er" learns. It's also one of the hacks that can generate some of the most interesting sonic effects in circuit bending.

Plug any module below +/-200mA through it and independently tune it's supply power. This will have most interesting effects in analog modules: filters, delays, mixers... They can either go silent or start screaming at your ears, going berserk with the lack of current to behaving normally, making them cough, choke... Something like a safely induced heart attack...

While revision 01 was a simple circuit with pot working as a voltage divider, this upgraded version uses a DC to DC converter that receives its input from the +12V power rail and outputs a bipolar 15V supply. This DC-DC converter also offers short circuit and overcurrent protection. The +/-15V lines are then sent through variable analog voltage regulators that can output a range of 2.5V to 13.5V.

In other words, the module features a +/-200mA PSU with variable voltage outputs.

This is a passive module, the power needed for operation is taken from the pedal power instead of the modular frame, this allows for perfect matching of the pedal's operating voltage which can range from 3.3v to 9v.

Passive module

Notes: ADDAC711 is a dual channel Isolated DI box and is all about keeping the sound coming into your Modular free from any undesired noisy interferences, making sure that what you're getting from your inputs is what your external hardware is actually producing. It provides galvanic electrical isolation between the Modular system and external sources preventing impedance mismatch and ground loop induced hum. ADDAC's 711 circuit is designed around a unity 1:1 type Low-cost Audio Transformer operating in the 20 Hz to 20 KHz range, this impedance matching transformer provides two fully balanced outputs (via XLR connectors).

There are two independent channels on the module with:

LIFT/FLOAT/GND toggle switch
Gain control
XLR Input

The LIFT/FLOAT/GND 3-way switch lets you choose between lift, ground or floating ground. In the LIFT position (left) the module circuit will be "lifted" to ground through a 100R resistor and a 10nF capacitor. In the FLOAT position (middle) Ground will not be shared leaving ins and outs grounds completely apart from each other fully isolating both signals.
In the GND position Ground will be shared between inputs and outputs, here no isolation is used. Any of these three positions may be the best form of avoiding ground loops or any other undesired interference occurring between your modular and the external hardware. Try out which one of these options will work best in any given situation.

The importance of using Audio Transformers

Applying a transformer balanced input isolation has lots of advantages over other less expensive ways for dealing with ground loop issues. This method provides the chance to set a very simple and cleancircuit in which the signal transfer process develops smoothly and humming free. The transformer is a device that performs both signal balancing and high-to-low (or vice-versa) impedance conversion, while rejecting straggled DC voltage and Radio Frequency Interference from signal passing through a magnetic bridge. In a transformer, two (or more) coils (called windings) of insulated wire wound around a magnetic metal core allow for its input(s) and output(s) not to be physically connected together. When an AC signal passes through the input winding (the primary), a perfectly related AC signal appears on the output winding (the secondary). This way, by the fact that signal flows via inductive coupling between the two windings of the transformer, this module presents a most accurate electrical isolation between its input and output. A same number of windings on each coil guarantees that there's no gain loss when audio signal passes from the primary to the secondary windings. Furthermore, since these two windings are insulated from each other, the transformer will electrically isolate ADDAC711 from any other device, preventing hum problems coming from an outsider ground. Being a low-cost transformer the frequency response curve is not completely linear, still the -0.2dB
attenuation at 50Hz feels negligible.

Notes: ADDAC809 is a dynamic CV operated I/O router that allows one source (Audio or CV) to be routed through 2 different chains (of one or more modules) before being sent to an output.
Six routing patterns are allowed:

1. IN > OUT
2. IN > CHAIN A > OUT
3. IN > CHAIN B > OUT
4. IN > CHAIN A > CHAIN B > OUT
5. IN > CHAIN B > CHAIN A > OUT
6. IN > > OUT
A practical example is to have an audio source, a delay and a looper.
And the question: should the delay be placed before or after the looper? Sometimes you may need the delay to be before the looper as you may want to sample the audio with the delay or sample the pure audio source and apply the delay afterwards.
This small utility module solves this issue on the fly without having to repatch anything.

ROUTING PATTERNS

There are 2 ways to address the six routing patterns:

Buttons: using the frontpanel push buttons and/or dedicated trigger inputs to latch between 2 states.
BYPASS: Chooses between Pattern 1 and any other pattern
PARALLEL: Chooses between Pattern 6 and any other pattern
ORDER: Chooses the order A before B or B before A
DUAL/SINGLE: Chooses to use a Dual (A>B or B>A) or Single chain (A or B)
CV: The dedicated CV input expects a 0 to +5v input and allows to jump to the precise routing pattern using a specific voltage interval in increments of approx. 0.83V:

Notes: 8 channels of audio or modulation over ethernet. There are two modules and a 3' CAT7e cable to connect them together. There are 8 total channels that are unbuffered and bi-directional. The primary usage is to connect two cases or just send a bundle of signals from one part of your larger case to another. You also get the option of buffering up to four channels on each side. This gives you a local copy of the signal and sends buffered copy to the other module, saving you from having to use a MULT to keep a local copy.

Some notes:

When one side of the Light Rail is in buffered mode, you cannot send signals from the opposite side on those 4 buffered channels (the other 4 channels can still be used in bi-directional mode)

If you are after a different longer/shorter cable, you will get the best performance with CAT7e as it offers the shielding, which is used for the ground.

While the cross channel bleed is minimal, you will notice some very minor cross talk between the channels.

Notes: The 'S.B.G' is a compact utility module intended for the interfacing of guitar effect pedals with your eurorack modular system.

Notes: Voltage-controlled lag processor and slope detector

Transforms stepped notes into smooth acid slides with independent speeds for both upper and lower notes.

The onboard slope detector generates gates while the output is rising or falling, allowing events to be activated when moving to upper or lower voltages.

Notes: 221.x2 is a clean and precise utility module that is equally at home mixing Control Voltage as it is audio. At its simplest, it is two independent 2-to-1 mixers that offer per-channel attenuation and inversion, as well as +6dB of gain available at the summed outputs. With a tap of the "All Mix" button, these separate mixes can be combined into a 4-to-1 mix at the "All Mix" output - meanwhile, the first 1+2 mix is still available at its respective summed output. A rear expansion input and output allows for combining multiple modules into larger systems.

In addition, each channel also offers a Direct Output that can be taken pre or post attenuation/inversion.

A 6-volt offset is normalled into the input jacks of channels 2 and 4. This voltage is available at the channel's Direct Output, as well as added to the mixed outputs. Useful as an offset for mixing with another CV signal, or simply as a voltage source.

Notes: Delta-V is a fully analogue dual-channel function generator, featuring a dedicated VCA and LFO cycle switch for each channel. It packs a great deal of functionality in only 10HP, and will surely find use in almost every patch.

Generate envelopes, slew gates and signals, or run LFOs with precise control over attack and decay times. Using the SHAPE knob, Delta-v can create a wide range of envelopes, from very snappy exponential curves for percussion to logarithmic thumps for bass lines.

If VCA's input is unpatched, the module outputs a regular voltage envelope. When an audio signal is patched into the VCA input, the output signal becomes the audio signal amplified by the envelope.

Sending other envelopes or an LFO to VCA input lets you modulate those modulators, quickly creating complex control voltages that go beyond the usual attack-decay envelope.

Combine this with the SUM output, which sums the two channels, and the attenuverters, which can quickly attenuate or invert the signal, and you have a whole array of signal processing capabilities.

The TRIGGER input fires a Attack-Decay envelope, while the SLEW input will affect the rate of change of the signal.

The trigger for channel 1 and 2 can be linked together, so you can fire two envelopes with one patch cable.

Each channel has an End of Cycle output, (EOC) this outputs a short trigger at the end of each envelope cycle.

The output voltage ranges from -10 to +10 volts, set with handy output attenuverters.

The CYCLE switch starts looping the envelope, creating LFO's that go up to audio rate, and that can also be used as an interesting sound source.

Notes: Welcome to the DROID X7 expander. The X7 gives you USB and MIDI connectivity for your master and also four gate outputs with modular levels.

Notes: Module A-134-2 contains two identical voltage controlled crossfader units.

Each unit has two voltage controlled amplifiers (VCAs) with opposite control behaviour available. The outputs of the two VCAs are mixed together to obtain a common output. The behaviour of the control voltage inputs can be chosen with an internal jumper:

Symmetrical mode: If the corresponding jumper is not set both VCAs of the crossfader have the same 50% amplification with zero CV. If the applied CV becomes positive the amplification of VCA1 decreases and those of VCA2 increases in the same way. A negative CV has the opposite result. The CV voltage range to obtain the maximum/minimum positions of the crossfader is about -2.5....+2.5V. This mode is useful for bidirectional (i.e. positive and negative) control voltages, for example LFO or joy stick (adjusted to 0V CV in centre position).

Asymmetrical mode: If the corresponding jumper is set VCA2 is fully closed and VCA1 has full 100% amplification with zero CV. If the applied CV becomes positive the amplification of VCA1 decreases and those of VCA2 increases in the same way. The CV voltage range to obtain the maximum/minimum positions of the crossfader is about 0...+5V. A negative CV has no function in this mode. This mode is useful for unidirectional (i.e. only positive) control voltages, for example ADSR, ribbon controller or Theremin control voltage.

The CV input of the upper unit (CV1) is normalled to the CV input of the lower unit (CV2). I.e. if no plug is inserted to CV2 the CV input of the upper unit (CV1) also controls the lower unit.

The second signal input of the upper unit (In1B) is normalled to the first signal input of the lower unit (In2A). I.e. if no plug is inserted into In2A the signal In1B is used as the first signal input of the second unit.

As the inputs and outputs are DC coupled the module can be used for both audio and control voltage signal processing.

Notes: The A-138d primarily is used for crossfading between two modular signals. On the other hand you can used it for inserting stompboxes or other effects into your modular system. Both the inputs and the mix output are available twice, like a mini-multiples e.g. for using the input signal also for other applications, kind of like a Thru.

Crossfader: With the crossfading control CF you blend manually between the inputs In 1 and In 2. The Mute switch allows for muting one of the two signals, independent on the crossfader position.

Effect insert: The signal at input In1 is emitted at the FX Send output and can be attenuated with the Atten. control because the modular system works with much higher levels.

The effect unit's output is inserted to the FX Return input socket and its level can be boosted with the Amp. control. The processed signal is available at the bottom in 2 socket.

Use the CF control to blend between the original signal and the effect signal and to mute switch for quick muting e.g. of the effect return signal.

Notes: 2HP narrow version of the A-180 multiples module. It is a passive signal splitter suitable for audio or CVs. Two sets of four jacks are interconnected, by placing a solder bridge you can connect all eight jacks.

It boosts external signal to modular synth signal level.

With the Pico Input, line signals from, for example, a synthesizer, drum-computer, audio interface or smartphone can be raised to modular level. The module delivers up to 40 dB of gain. Thanks to its two channels, users can comfortably process mono as well as stereo material.

The Pico Input comes equipped with two signal paths. Each signal path features an audio input, a volume potentiometer and an output. Up to 40 dB of amplification are available. Using jumpers on the circuit board, it is possible to dampen the maximum gain to 20 dB. The module's first input is a stereo jack, meaning the user can connect a smartphone or tablet without any adapter cables. In this case, incoming signals are distributed internally to both channels.

Notes: Those, who own Moog Mother 32 know, that it requires -5V - +5V on 1V/oct input to operate in full range, while the eurorack standard is 0V - +10V. So, to control Moog Mother 32 from a eurorack sequencer you need to bias a sequencer output for 5 volts down. And vice versa, Moog Mother 32 sequencer outputs -5V - +5V on 1V/oct output, and, if you wish to control some eurorack VCO from Moog Mother 32, you need to bias it 5 volts up. This is exactly what MSCALE does: it has two sections, upper one adds 5V to the input voltage, other subtracts 5V form the input voltage.

Notes: The "uMM" combines a MIDI merger and two independent THRU distributors in a module that is only 4 HP wide. All sockets on the module are in MIDI TRS-B format.

At the heart of the two-input MIDI merger is a small, powerful ARM processor with plenty of buffer memory. Two MIDI streams are mixed to one output and can also be tapped via an additional second output. Notes: The 333 is a summing and distribution module for Eurorack modular systems.

It is composed of three identical sections, the red, yellow and green, each of those featuring three inputs summing amplifier with three independently buffered outputs.

Derived directly from the CGM creative mixer series, the sum section is DC coupled, allowing the sum of control voltages as well as audio signals.

With an extremely low tolerance in both sum and output sections, it is suitable also for summing quantized voltages like the ones coming out from the quantized outputs of the SAPEL.

In case CVs or audio signals are particularly hot, the 6dB attenuator might be helpful to reduce exactly by 50% the incoming signals.

Red and yellow output are also normalled to the 1st jack socket of the yellow and green input: in this way this module can also work as a 1 to 9 buffered multiple.

Notes: Chris Huggett, chief designer at EDP came up with a novel little circuit for the filter envelope of the Wasp, based around half a CD4013, half a CD4066 and half a LM3900. It was an A/R generator with looping option which would proceed through its whole cycle from only a trigger input. He further developed the circuit for the filter envelope in the Gnat to use just one knob to provide a range of attack envelopes when anti-clockwise (from 12 o'clock), and a range of release envelopes when clockwise (from 12 o'clock). 12 o'clock gives a very short symmetrical blip. As you can build two of these with a CD4013, CD4066 and LM3900, Frequency Central have provided both a two knob version and a one knob version, each has its own place.

Each input features a micro-attenuator which can be set with a small screwdriver. This space saving feature allows you to reduce the volume of an incoming signal without having to resort to external attenuators. If you add many inputs to one output you will of course cause clipping (which may or may not be desirable!), the micro-attenuators are your on-board way around this. I find it useful to leave the micro-attenuators set to 50% (which is how they come pre-set at delivery). Of course, their size is a little bit of a compromise, but they are a useful feature nonetheless. Notes: In recent years, stereo signal paths have increasingly found their way into the wonderful world of Eurorack synthesis - so naturally, utilities should follow suit. Introducing the Herzlich PSA, a simple solution to a problem you might not even realize you had. Far from just useful as an attenuator for audio sources in mixdowns, the PSA can also be used to bring audio down to more managable levels (such as line level), attenuate multiple signals simultaneously (like increasing the modulation depth of two LFO's at the same time! It's like having two hands, but with one hand!) and even function as a multiple: Attenuator 1 is normalled to Attenuator 2, so multing your stereo signal (or two mono signals) while attenuating the two signals individually is easy as pie.

There's not much else to say, except that it's passive, and draws no power - and it looks great!
